13 Mental Strategies to Help You Stick With Your New
Exercise Routine
Let’s face it: It’s much easier to make fitness resolutions than to keep them. We all have the best intentions on January 1, and then as the year rolls on, we lose steam, confidence, and motivation. What seemed so feasible just days or weeks ago—going to the gym five days a week/running a half marathon/enter resolution here—can somehow morph into something impossible. And while it’s easy to blame our loss of focus on life happening, perhaps the biggest threat to a realistic resolution is the narrative that plays in our heads. Well, what if this year were different? Here, exercise experts share the mental techniques they use to help clients stay on track with their fitness goals when they’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and/or otherwise unmotivated.

The University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship. Beginning in Spring 2019, one or two outstanding medical students who have successfully completed the third year of medical school at a LCME-accredited institution and who have an interest in orthopedics will be selected for this award. The award will include support for housing and travel. The Jackson-Steindler Orthopedic Clerkship continues the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation’s long commitment to excellence, service and diversity. The department was founded by Arthur Steindler who immigrated to the United States because of limited opportunities he faced in Austria. After establishing the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation in Iowa City in 1913 he sought to provide educational and career opportunities for individuals who shared his commitment to excellence, service and diversity. Ruth Jackson is one of those individuals. Ruth Jackson, after graduating from medical school, sought education in surgery, but few if any programs would accept her. When she contacted Arthur Steindler, he enthusiastically offered her a position in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Iowa. Ruth Jackson is now recognized as the first woman orthopedic surgeon in the United States and the Ruth Jackson Society, an organization devoted to advancing women in orthopedics, is named for her. The Jackson-Steindler Clerkship Awardees will participate in the clinical services at the University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, the educational programs including conferences and surgical skills education as well as have the opportunity to participate in research conferences. Opportunity Wenner Scholar Infectious Diseases Summer Program
We are pleased to announce that applications are open for the 10th year of the H.E. Wenner Scholar Program in Infectious Diseases. There is a single position each summer (8-10 weeks laboratory-based research) through the Division of Infectious Disease at Children's Mercy Hospital. The position is partially funded via an endowment from the family of the late Dr. Herbert A. Wenner, a seminal researcher in polio epidemiology and vaccine development and former Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children's Mercy Hospital. The program is overseen by Rangaraj Selvarangan BVSc., Ph.D., D(ABMM) and Dr. Christopher Harrison, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Infectious Diseases Research; with assistance from Douglas Swanson MD, Jennifer Schuster MD, and other ID faculty depending on the project for any given summer. Selected members of this mentor group oversee the summer project and assist the student in the development of a project which to be completed in the 8-10 week time frame. There are also two PhDs in the laboratory who provide day-to-day guidance and support for the student while performing the chosen lab-based project.
In addition, the student can be paired with an ID faculty clinician (a clinical mentor during the rotation) potentially shadowing this mentor on clinical rounds for several half days during the summer. The start and finish date are flexible and can be arranged with the student's schedule in mind. All students who have completed at least their first year of medical school are invited to apply. The student would work in Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory, have specific didactic assignments relative to the research project, be invited to attend presentations at monthly research rounds, and attend the weekly ID clinical case conference. Ultimately authorship on an abstract for local, regional or national presentation is a goal as a final scholarly product of the student’s experience. Further, the student will craft a report on the summer experience which is sent to the Wenner family. Dr. Harrison will work with the student on the family report. We ask that you circulate this information to your students. Interested applicants should apply online https://pm.healthcaresource.com/CS/childrensmercy/#/job/7839. The job is posted under “Research” as WENNER MEDICAL STUDENT SCHOLAR. The successful applicant will be notified by CMH Human Resources and Dr. Selvarangan.
