    General Information

Traditionally mooring ships has alwaysbeen done by using ropes. Thispractice has remained unchangeddespite strong technical developmentswithin ports and shipping over recentdecades.

The automated mooring solutionsdeveloped by Cavotec MoorMasternow bring mooring up to speed withthe pace of the modern shippingindustry.

By using vacuum and hydraulic basedtechnology instead of ropes the wholeoperation of mooring a ship isreduced to a simple press of a button.

Average time for a ship to be securedis reduced to within 12 seconds and iscompletely automatic.

Ships can moor almost immediatelywithout the need for mooring gangs, meaning cargo operations cancommence sooner and the vessel willenjoy a faster turnaround.

MoorMaster introduces enhancedsafety for ship and shore personnel asthe hazards associated with mooringlines are no longer present.

MoorMaster has advanced real timemonitoring features ensuring the

mooring operator, ship captain andport authority are constantly wellinformed of the status of the mooring.

Once the system is activated, thevacuum pads extend and secure theship. The units are designed to allowfor the majority of hull types easilyaccommodating typical surfaceirregularities. The units connect closeto the waterline and counteract shipmovements at the berth providing asignificant improvement over mooringlines in surge affected ports.

Cavotec MoorMaster - safe, reliableand efficient.

Thanks to the innovative MoorMaster designthe mooring of a ship can be done in a frac-tion of the time and cost compared to moo-ring with ropes.

    The main advantages

    Safety

    • Risk of injury to shore and shippersonnel by mooring ropeseliminated.

    • Continuous load monitoring andsophisticated alarm functions, relayedin real time to operations personnel.

    • Multiple redundancies of vacuum padsand inherent fail safe features ensure asecure mooring even during powercuts or loss of control signals.

    • Robust mechanical design using onlytop-rated components, ensuringreliable performance.

    Economy

    • Fast attachment (typically > 12 sec)and quick release.

    • Allows larger ships to use smallerstructures without the need to addstructure for line leads and bollards

    • Avoids delays while waiting formooring teams to become available.

    • Only one operator required, basedashore or onboard, to activate andremotely monitor (if necessary) themooring system.

    • No more disruption of other duties orto mandatory rest hours of ship crews.

    • Potential reduction of crew numberson ships and pier on fixed-routeoperations.

    • A shorter port stay may means lessspeed is required at sea and can offerbetter ship and berth utilisation.

    Environment

    • Fast mooring means less operation ofthe ship’s propulsion, of tugs andlines’ boats etc, and consequentlydiminishes emissions into the portenvironment.

    • The mooring systems have low electricpower demand and use minimalconsumption once attachment hasoccurred.

    • Lower speed requirement for seavoyage translates into fuel savings.

    • Offers measurable reduction in ropecosts, less abrasion to hull paintworkand reduces mechanical wear on shorefenders

    Solutions for container terminals

Container terminals have become acrucial link in today’s global economy.Often they are the main logistics hub fora large geographical region ensuring thesmooth exchange of consumer goods, commodities and industrial products.Gains in efficiency and productivity thatcan be made regarding the ship to shoreinterface is potentially significant furtherdown the logistics chain and can have aprofound impact on the commercialsuccess of terminal operators, shippinglines and their customers.

Cavotec MoorMaster’s automatedmooring systems close the technologicalgap between container ships and today’shighly automated terminal facilities.

Container ships are becoming larger andin many ports the mooring of these hugevessels with ropes can easily exceed 30minutes. MoorMaster can secure theselarge ships in a matter of seconds, allowing shore personnel faster access tothe vessel to begin cargo operations.

In surge affected ports, MoorMaster holdsships steady providing a stable platformfor faster crane and cargo movements.

    Infrastructure• Improved pier utilisation through

    closer spacing of ships

    • Quay length can be ‘virtuallyextended’ as the ship’s bow canoverhang the end of the quay.

    • MoorMaster may reduce arequirement for an expanding port toextend breakwater protection

Safety• Reduced risk of mooring accidents

    • Real-time monitoring of actualmooring process and forces duringthe port stay

    Environment• Reduced emissions

    • Quicker connection to shore power

    Efficiency• Higher container transfer rates

Ship is held very steady alongside, which may in future allow for theautomation of shore cranes Improved turn-around time, allowingfor better berth utilisation

    • Improved continuity of work processes

    • Shorter operating times for habourtugs

    • No mooring teams neededFaster access for lashing gangsHarbour Pilots can depart a mooredvessel faster

Solutions for RoRo and Ferry Terminals

Transport of RoRo cargo by sea plays anincreasingly important role in reducingroad congestion. Good examples are thespecialised pure car carriers (PCC) whichform an integral part of the logisticschain within global car manufacturing, and passenger ferries which are mostlyemployed on short sea routes wherereliability of schedule and quick crossingtimes are of vital importance.

While many RoRo ships and ferries tradeon fixed routes, adaptability to differentports remains important to ship ownersand terminal operators. With increasingship sizes, the challenge is often tosafely moor in adverse environmentalconditions, especially where pier spacefor ropes is restricted. The CavotecMoorMaster is very effective inshortening the time in port, and allowsterminals to operate in adverseenvironmental conditions that areincompatible with traditional ropemooring. Retrofitting existing terminalswith Cavotec MoorMaster allows usageby vessel sizes beyond the originaldesign envelope, without the need forcostly pier extensions.

Infrastructure• Improved pier utilisation with to

    closer spacing of ships

    • Quay length can be minimised asship’s bow and/or stern can overhangthe end of the quay

    • Ideal for combination with simplepile-based berths

    • MoorMaster may reduce arequirement for an expanding port toextend breakwater protection

Safety• Reduced risk of mooring accidents

    • Reduced risk of linkspan damagewith automatic guidance

    • Real-time monitoring of actualmooring process

    Efficiency• Shorter, more predictable turn-around

    times, allowing for better berthutilisation

    • Improved continuity of work processes

    • Reduced risk of cargo and passengerlink disruption in adverse conditions

    • Reduced risk of schedule disruptiondue to industrial action

Environment• Reduced emissions thanks to faster

    mooring process

    • Less pier and breakwater structuresrequired

Solutions for Dry Bulk and Tanker terminals

Bulk cargoes represent the largestproportion of global trade categories byvolume and transporting these by searemains the most effective option. Thesespecialised ships are categorisedaccording to their size, and vesselswithin one class share similar hull shapesand dimensions.

The ships are not usually operated onfixed routes, but chartered for singlevoyages. Terminal operators typicallyhave to compensate the ship owner forlost time if undue delays are incurred atloading or unloading terminals.

The Cavotec MoorMaster makes theship interface more predictable andstable, thus reducing downtime due toadverse conditions in port. By significantlyreducing ship turn-around time, shipsand terminals can be utilised moreefficiently.

Infrastructure• Improved pier utilisation thanks to

    closer spacing of ships
