Het aanzuren van drinkwater start wordt best gestart vanaf drie dagen voor het spenen tot ongeveer
twee weken na het spenen. Daarna is het aangeraden om geleidelijk aan af te bouwen.
Voor het aanzuren van water tot een pH van 3,8-4,2 wordt vooral gebruik gemaakt van organische
zuren. Deze hebben als voordeel dat ze minder corrosief en gevaarlijk zijn ten opzichte van de
anorganische zuren. Ook zijn anorganische zuren minder effectief voor het doden van bacteriën en
worden de dieren nog extra belast met mineralen25
. Enkele voorbeelden van organische zuren zijn
melkzuur, azijnzuur, mierenzuur, propionzuur, fumaarzuur en citroenzuur. Deze zuren zijn makkelijker
biologisch afbreekbaar.
Het zuur wordt best zo dicht mogelijk bij het begin van het leidingsysteem toegevoegd via een
automatisch doseringssysteem. Op die manier kan het zuur ook een invloed uitoefenen op
contaminatie in de leidingen. Er moet op regelmatige tijdstippen een test uitgevoerd worden om de
zuurtegraad te controleren. Dit kan eenvoudig worden uitgevoerd met behulp van beschikbare pH-
strips25
. Het antibacteriële effect is afhankelijk van de graad van dissociatie, de pKa van het zuur, de
pH van het milieu en de buffercapaciteit.
Organische zuren zorgen voor een gunstige pH daling dat ervoor zorgt dat de slechte
Enterobacteriaceae onderdrukt worden en de goede lactobacillen begunstigd worden. In niet-
gedissocieerde vorm is er tevens een antibacteriële eigenschap aanwezig waardoor een reductie
wordt verkregen van de coliforme belasting. Dit komt omdat de pH daling zorgt voor een gestegen
pepsine activiteit en een vertraagde maaglediging. Hierdoor komen de eiwitten beter verteerd in de
darm en zijn er minder nutriënten aanwezig in de dikke darm. Dit alles kan leiden tot een betere
voederconversie, minder diarree en reductie van Salmonella, maar toch zijn de resultaten vaak
variabel197, 48
. Ter preventie van Salmonella bleek uit onderzoek48
dat voeder gesupplementeerd met
gecoat calciumbutyraat betere resultaten gaf.

BESPREKING
Doorheen de literatuurstudie is duidelijk gebleken dat het management en de voeding van gespeende
biggen niet onderschat mag worden. In de hedendaagse varkenshouderij is spenen een essentiële
stap om tot gunstige economische resultaten te komen. Gedurende enkele jaren lijdt de varkenssector
onder lage prijzen en hoge voeder- en infrastructuurkosten waardoor het problematisch wordt om
positieve resultaten te boeken. De alsmaar strengere wetgeving en extra druk om een zo optimaal
mogelijk dierenwelzijn na te streven, vergemakkelijken de zaak zeker niet. Hedendaags wordt nog
steeds onderzoek gevoerd om een zo optimaal mogelijke opfok van biggen te kunnen bekomen.
Vanwege de grote variatie tussen verschillende bedrijven, op het vlak van management, voeding en
huisvesting, maar ook op vlak van inzicht en inzet van de varkenshouder, is het echter niet eenvoudig
om resultaten uit studies te gaan extrapoleren naar de praktijk.
Door het gebruik van meer-weken-systemen wordt het werk systematisch verdeeld en wordt meestal
een zo efficiënt mogelijke bezetting van de stallen verkregen. Praktisch en economisch is dit het
voordeligst voor de varkenshouder. Het is wel van belang dat men zich strikt houdt aan de dagen
waarop bv. geïnsemineerd en gespeend wordt, om correct volgens schema te kunnen handelen.
Biggen systematisch vroeger dan 21 dagen spenen is wettelijk niet toegelaten in de EU en dit zal
hoogst waarschijnlijk niet meteen veranderen. Niet enkel op wettelijk vlak is men begrensd, maar ook
op fysiologisch vlak zullen weinig extra voordelen gevonden worden bij spenen op jongere leeftijd. Het
belang van de colostrale en lactogene immuniteit is groot en ook het immuun- en spijsverteringsstelsel
van de biggen moeten tijd krijgen om te rijpen.
Een correcte hygiëne, ventilatie en temperatuur in de stallen is van groot belang om de infectiedruk
laag te houden, maar ook om de concentraties stof en schadelijke gassen te reduceren. Een goede
reiniging en desinfectie met werkzame middelen, gevolgd door een droog periode is noodzakelijk.
Door een overbezetting te vermijden in de stallen kunnen al heel wat gezondheidsrisico’s vermeden
worden. Er moet ook op gelet worden dat er best door de stallen wordt gelopen van jong naar oud,
omdat de jonge dieren het meest vatbaar zijn voor pathogenen. Er is al heel wat onderzoek uitgevoerd
om te achterhalen wat de ideale groepsgrootte is na het spenen, maar hierop is moeilijk een eenduidig
antwoord te vinden. Hoe groter de groepen zijn, hoe goedkoper de uitrusting zal zijn. Hoe kleiner de
groepen, hoe minder stress de biggen ondergaan. Er moet dus een evenwicht gevonden worden
tussen de financiële kant van de infrastructuur en de optimale omstandigheden voor de biggen. Hoe
minder tomen gemengd worden, hoe minder stress ze zullen ondergaan na het spenen. Er zou echter
nog meer onderzoek moeten gebeuren naar het feit dat de biggen al in hun speengroepen verdeeld
worden wanneer ze nog bij de moederzeug lopen. De biggen vertoeven dan nog in hun vertrouwde
omgeving en kunnen nog zuigen, maar leren zo hun toomgenoten al op voorhand kennen waarbij al
een nieuwe hiërarchie bepaald kan worden.
Welke voedersamenstelling best gegeven wordt rond het moment van spenen is nog niet helemaal
duidelijk. Er is al veel onderzoek gevoerd naar verschillende plantenextracten en andere
voederadditieven die kunnen worden gesuppleerd bij het basisvoeder. Vele onderzoeken vinden
positieve correlaties met de groei van de biggen, vaak omwille van het antibacteriële effect van het
additief. Deze antibacteriële werking is van belang omdat men alternatieven moet vinden om het
antibioticagebruik te kunnen reduceren. Een belangrijk nadeel van sommige additieven, wat
regelmatig niet vermeld wordt bij het onderzoek, is dat deze vaak te duur zijn om ze effectief te gaan
gebruiken in de praktijk. Ook is het van belang dat de smakelijkheid van het voeder niet vermindert
omdat dit zal leiden tot een verlaagde voederopname en daardoor het oplopen van een
groeiachterstand. Hierdoor is het van belang verder onderzoek te doen naar de meest ideale

voederadditieven waarbij we de beste voederopname en groei bekomen. Er moet tijdig worden
gecontroleerd dat er genoeg voeder aanwezig én bereikbaar is in de voederbakken en dat deze niet te
veel vervuild zijn. Het bijplaatsen van extra voederbakjes, de dagen voor en na het spenen, zorgen
voor een extra goede voederbeschikbaarheid en -opname. Daarnaast moet er ook voldoende proper
drinkwater aanwezig zijn. Het is noodzakelijk om minstens jaarlijks het drinkwater te laten
onderzoeken op afwijkende waarden via een chemisch en bacteriologisch onderzoek en op basis van
het resultaat de nodige maatregelen te treffen.
Er kan dus besloten worden dat het management rond het spenen niet eenvoudig is. Verder
onderzoek is noodzakelijk om alle beïnvloedende factoren zo optimaal mogelijk te krijgen zodat ziekte,
stress en groeiachterstand minimaal zijn in deze cruciale periode.
