TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKTAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 68

The hit song ‘Lendu Bharatha veerularaa…’ in “Grihalakshmi’was inspired by the famous hit song by the popular Blind Singerof Bengal and noted film music composer K. C. Dey, ‘Mankiankhen khol babaaa…!’)

The success of ‘Grihalakshmi’ separated the two Reddis, HMand BN for many reasons. Then BN, in association with thebrilliant twins of South Indian Cinema, K. Ramnoth and A. K.Sekhar, promoted the historic Vauhini Pictures. Nagaiah wasby now an intimate pal of BN and involved himself in the newcompany heart, soul, mind and body.

BN cast Nagaiah as hero in his first directorial venture‘Vande Matharam’ (1939). Scripted by Ramnoth based on anunpublished novel by BN, ‘Vande Matharam’ dealt with ruralpoverty, unemployment among the educated and such sociallyrelevant issues. BN sincerely believed that every film shouldcarry a message of social significance and his first film wasmoulded accordingly.

Ironically, the title of the film had nothing to do with the story. The expression synonymous with the Indian Freedom Move-ment is used only once in the movie when Nagaiah buys a DerbyLottery (which he wins!) from a Madras city street vendor. When asked by him in whose name the ticket is to be issued,Nagaiah replies, ‘Vande Matharam’! Interestingly the BritishIndian Film Censors objected to the title and, as a compromise,BN added a word ‘Mangalasutram’ under the main title, makingit clear that the film was only an emotional family drama andnot a political patriotic tract opposed to the British rule.

‘Vande Matharam’ was a big success and Nagaiah came infor high praise both by the crowds and the critics, and he washailed as the new hero on the Telugu film horizon!

The Vauhini unit worked as a family with everyone contrib-uting to the production. Even though Nagaiah was the hero ofthe film, he did not hesitate to push the camera trolley. Whenthe film was released, he went along with the print as theproducer’s representative. Such was his spirit and involve-ment, quite common in those happy days gone by. Today onecannot even dream of such things happening in the dog-eat-its-own-tail film world.

When BN made in his next film ‘Sumangali’ (1940), much tothe surprise of many, he cast Nagaiah not as the hero but asan elderly silver-haired social reformer fighting for the uplift ofwomen, especially widows. The character was broadly inspiredby the well-known social reformer of his day, KandukuriVeeresalingam Panthulu, who had sacrificed his life for thebetterment of women and fought a hard battle for the remar-riage of widows. Nagaiah accepted the role without a murmur, for such was his passion and devotion to work. BN imported asilk wig all the way from Paris and, to fit it properly, Nagaiahhad to shave some of his hair in front, which he did, againwithout a murmur!

His fine performance in this minor role attracted greatattention in spite of the failure of the film. It was while reviewingthe film that Baburao Patel remarked that Nagaiah was the‘Indian Paul Muni.’

(Paul Muni was one of the greatest actors of Hollywood duringits Golden Age and he created many immortal roles playing reallife characters like Louis Pasteur, Juarez, Emile Zola andmany others. ‘Good Earth’, in which he played the role of aChinese farmer, is considered as one of his finest performances, and the movie itself is a Hollywood classic. It was based on thefamous novel by the Nobel Prize winning author Pearl S. Buck.He was so popular and enjoyed so much respect and regard thathe was the only Hollywood actor whose name appeared in thecredit titles as ‘Mr. Paul Muni’. This recognition has not beengiven to any other actor in the history of American Cinema tothis day.)

Sir – We, the residents of Nana Street lo-cated near Panagal Park are suffering fromrainwater stagnation in our street, apart fromdumping of garbage and silt removed fromstormwater drains in other areas by ChennaiCorporation workers. Following rains, the wholearea has turned slushy and stinks. - Resi-dents

Nana Street stinks

Sir, Thank you for publishing our association’sletter last week inviting other residents’ asso-ciations to join hands in consolidating and orga-nizing Aadhar camps within the colonies asproposed by Directorate of Census.

We received an overwhelming response froma number of residents and associations in the

Women Helpline 1091

Residents left out in NPR surveystruggle for Aadhar enrolment

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

neighbourhood. However on consolidation, we found that many of theresidents were missed out during the population census carried out in2010 and many were even unaware of such an exercise.

Since enrollment / registration of biometric data cannot be donewithout the census slip, we have told those residents to get in touch withtheir respective zonal offices of the Chennai Corporation, where theyhave go through the procedure to get themselves included in theNational Population Register.

In the case of those who have the Aadhaar card issued by the UniqueIdentification Authority, it has to be re-linked to the NPR scheme.

The interaction with the residents confirmed that the Census De-partment has not carried out the exercise of enumeration in the year2010 in a systematic way.

If it had done it properly, it is not possible that so many residentswould not have been left out of the survey when many of them havebeen living in the same residence for a number of years.

As a result of the blunders committed by the officials, residents arenow forced to run from pillar to post to get them enrolled.

We have allayed the fears of the residentswho are yet to get enrolled under the NPRscheme that they will not be denied of the LPGsubsidy, as the Census Department is yet tocover a vast ground in Tamilnadu.

We must mention that since the officialsthemselves are unaware of the nitty-gritty ofthe scheme, they were of no help to the resi-dents. Confusion, therefore reigned supremewherever the camps were held. – V. S.Jayaraman, Secretary, Motilal StreetResidents’ Welfare Association, Old No.31, New No. 57, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

HUMAN BEASTSThe Delhi Sessions Judge, while convict-

ing the four human beasts who murderedthe defenceless girl after brutalising her likedogs in heat, could not (unless the IndianPenal Code of Macaulay had been amendedmaking rape and murder a mere flee biteoffence that entails a fine of ten rupees) butimpose a fitting tribute to the quartet byordering the manila ropes which put themon the same pedestal as friend Afzal andKasab for a hoist to the nether world. Theconscientious judge, who is reportedly anacquitter, must have been revolted by thedepravity of the fellows and visualised therope-halo around their young necks.

Anamika, the murderee, did not enrichmedical lore in India but the SingaporeHospital will treasure the case study theydid on her entrails devastated by the ironrod wielding juvenile rapist-killer, report-edly the researcher of the gang on what theinsides of a girl look like.

Narendra Mody as PM will, I hope, pickthe brains of good old Subramanian Swamyor me to rubbish or replace the JuvenileJustice Act. As I am against death sen-tence which is not a punishment, since allof us, the good, the bad, the ugly and thebeautiful die, the guilty should be made toLIVE and SUFFER.
