Krishnammachari said thatthe 10,000 sq.ft training cen-ter, completed in 3 1/2 months,consists of a big hall, well-equipped classrooms, storeroom, toilets and bathroomswhich will be convenient forteachers and visitors.
He said that Single TeacherSchools, started about 9 yearsback by Swami VivekanandaRural Development Society,runs 510 schools in remote vil-lages of Tiruvallur andKancheepuram Districts.Nearly 20,000 children aregetting the benefit of educa-tion at their doorstep.
He said that the concept of‘Single Teacher School’ in-volves simple steps like identi-fying the most educated youthin the village, motivating him/
her to become a teacher, im-parting basic training and brief-ing him/her on the syllabus pre-pared by reputed education-ists. The next step is to find aconvenient location in the vil-lage for placing the blackboardwhich may be a temple, com-munity hall, space under a hugetree or unused space under alamp. The teacher then enrolsnot less than 30 children.
Classes from 1 to 5 are con-ducted six days a week. Thesyllabus includes Tamil, En-glish, Arithmetic and Basic Sci-ences.
