iMovie is apple consumer- level application for managing video and creating movie. iMovie designed to easily allow people like me and you to quickly create great-looking movies from our video collections and photo. This is especially useful now that the ability to shoot video everywhere from our phones to our digital camera. While entire books are written on creating movies with iMovie’11 As a faculty member, why would I use iMovie and spend the time to learn iMovie?

When you open iMovie:

1. Select “File” and click “New Project” 2. Select Project Theme

3. Name your project when prompted on right-hand side 4. Select “Create”

To import video file:

1. Click on the “File” menu, then select “Import” and then “Movies.” Note that iMovie will automatically import file types such as DV, Mpeg-2, .Mov, .AVI and Mpeg-4.

2. Select the file that you would like to import into iMovie. Enter a name for the new event or select “Add to existing event,” and select the event from the drop-down menu.

3. Press “Import” to finish. Note that all video imports will occur in “real time.”

Using your own Apple Computer: 1. You can import pictures directly from iPhoto. Select the icon on the menu

bar. 2. After clicking the icon, you should see your entire iPhoto library

and thumbnails of different photos. 3. Drag and drop a selected photo thumbnail to the desired location in the

Project pane.

Using an Emory Workstation: 1. Place all photos that will be used into the “Pictures” folder on your desk-

top.

2. From here, you can drag and drop the JPEGs into the Project pane of the iMovie screen. This can also be done on your personal computer, if your images are not stored in iPhoto.

3. Drag and drop a selected photo to the desired location in the Project pane.

4. To adjust the duration of the picture display, double

click on the blue inspector icon in the bottom left hand corner of the image, then click on Clip Adjust-

ments.

5. In the new Inspector window that appears, you can alter the duration of the picture and add video effects.

1. Click to the icon and then click to any video clip or photo to start recording a

voiceover in iMovie. After the voiceover settings, the preview

window will give you the instruction, asking you to click a

clip to start recording.

2. When you are recording, a red shadow will cover the video clip to show that

you are recording. To stop a voiceover recording,

you can click anywhere in the project. The finished

voiceover will appear in purple icon below the videos

where your voiceover is added.

3. To adjust the voiceover in iMovie, you can choose the voiceover clip hit

the gear in the front and choose Clip Trimmer, Clip Adjustments, and Audio Adjust-

ments to make modifications to the iMovie voiceover.

1. Click the button in the editing bar ( ) on the far right.

2.A “Titles” pane will open (bottom right corner) with samples of title, subtitle, and credit options. To preview the effect, simply place your cursor over the thumbnail dis-played.

2. Once you have located the effect you would like to use, there are two pos-

sible ways to add it to your movie. You can: a. Drag it directly onto a video clip. The text will

appear right over the video.

b. Drag it into a space in between existing clips and it will appear over a black screen. You will be prompted to choose a background color or pattern.

3. Double-click on the place holder text and replace it with your own.

4. In the Project pane, the text will appear above the clip in a blue bubble.

5. To set the length of time the text will appear, you can either:

a. Double-click the blue bubble and manually set the duration, or

b. Go to the end of the bubble and adjust the endpoints once a horizontal red editing line appears at the beginning or end of blue bubble.

6. To alter the text, just click on the blue bubble and you will return to the

title editing screen.

1. Adding a transition is much like adding a title. Simply click the

button

in the editing bar on the far right of your iMovie screen. To preview a particular

transition, place your cursor over the thumbnail. Drag and drop the transition to the

place in the project where you would like the transition to appear.

2. Double-click on the transition marker to edit the duration of

the transition. An “Inspector” window may pop-up that allows you to change the time

of the transition and type.

1. When you place your cursor over video footage or a picture, a crop icon

appears in the upper left hand corner of the thumbnail( ). Clicking on the

thumbnail will reveal cropping features in the vide-pane.

2. Another way to access the crop panel is by clicking on the crop function

which is an icon ( ) on the tool bar below the iMovie pane.

3. Once in the crop panel, you can rotate (arrows at the top), turn on or off

(and adjust) the zooming Ken Burns effect, and crop.

1. Adding music to an iMovie project is much like adding photos.

Upload music directly from your iTunes library by clicking on the musical

notes icon on the right middle of the screen.

2. Click on the folder you want to choose music from and

3. To preview your audio, go into the Project pane and scroll over the

audio clip.

4. By double-clicking on the inspector icon ( ) in the upper left

hand corner of the colored area, which is your audio, you can adjust the length

or portion of the song (Clip Trimmer) and the levels of the song (Audio Adjust-

ments).
