Isaiah 7:10-17; Matthew 1:18-25 The Story (735 B.C.): Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 Text Message: o It is the year 735 B.C. The nation of Assyria is a threat to the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. o In response, Israel and Aram (Syria) form an alliance and try to force Judah into their alliance. o If Judah joins their alliance, it will be strengthened. If Judah refuses, the Israel/Syrian alliance will occupy Judah. o In other words, Judah is in a no-win situation. o The Lord then sends the prophet Isaiah to King Ahaz of Judah to let him know that God will take care of his problem. o The sign the Lord gives to Ahaz is that: 1) An unnamed Hebrew virgin would give birth and call her son Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14). 2) While the child is still very young, the threat of the Israel/Syrian alliance will pass. o The fulfillment of this sign for Ahaz took place three years later, as Assyria would conquer Syria in 732 B.C. o Fast-forward over seven centuries to the rest of the story. 1) He is worthy of our highest allegiance. 2) He is worthy of our surrendered self.3) He is our first resort, not our last resort. 4) He is our forgiveness in our failures and sins.5) He is our escape in temptation.6) What we are experiencing now is just, to use the words of the hymn Blessed Assurance, “a foretaste of glory divine!”
