Introducing the Program

Program Viewing SuggestionsThe student master “Video Review” (p. 19) is provided for distribution to students. You may choose to have your students complete this master while viewing the program or do so upon its conclusion.

The program is approximately 20 minutes in length and includes a ten-question video assessment. Answers are not provided to the Video Assessment in the video, but are included in this manual on page 13. You may choose to grade student assessments as an assessment tool or to review the answers in class.

The video is content-rich with numerous vocabulary words. For this reason you may want to periodically stop the video to review and discuss new terminology and concepts.

Before showing the video program to students, ask them what they think are some characteristics of a person that leads an unhealthy lifestyle. Ask them what an unhealthy person eats, drinks, and does for exercise. Write their descriptions on the board. Next, what other damaging things do unhealthy people do to their bodies such as smoke, drink alcohol, or take drugs? Discuss other risky behaviors that people take that may lead to injuries or even death. Also write these on the board.

Next, ask students what they think are some of the characteristics of a healthy person their age. Have them write down what a healthy person eats, drinks, and does for exercise. Write the ideas of students on the board. Also ask them what a healthy person does to avoid accidents, and what kind of mental state they have. Write these ideas on the board. Next, discuss the types of harmful substances a healthy person avoids.

Tell students to pay close attention to the video program to learn more about how to maintain a healthy body. Following the program ask students how their ideas about living a healthy lifestyle changed.

Video Script: Maintaining a Healthy Body1. At some point in your life you’ve had an injury,…2. or have been sick.3. Maybe you’ve had specific medical treatment for something as minor as getting eyeglasses,

or…4. … having a cavity filled.5. Or, perhaps you’ve had a more serious injury such as a broken bone.6. These are just a few examples of problems the body can encounter. Fortunately, young people

have many fewer problems with their bodies than older people.7. But, how you take care of your body as a young person can have serious implications for you

later in life.8. What are some of the health problems the body can encounter?9. What can you do to prevent health problems?

10. And, what things should you regularly do to help your body remain healthy?11. During the next few minutes we’re going to answer these questions and others as we explore

ways to maintain a healthy body.12. Graphic Transition – A Healthy Attitude 13. You probably know young people that eat poor diets, don’t exercise, and engage in various

types of risky behavior.14. While they may seem relatively healthy now, chances are they will develop health problems as

they get older.15. What motivates some people to live healthier lifestyles than others? It starts with a healthy

attitude.16. But, one of the most important things a person can do to lead a healthy lifestyle is to make

healthy choices.17. This begins with the notion of taking responsibility for your own health.18. When you were young, your family took responsibility for your health.19. But as a young adult your health becomes your responsibility.20. Graphic Transition – A Healthy Diet21. Have you ever heard the expression – “You are what you eat”?22. While it’s literally not true, it is true that your diet has a big effect on your health and your

general feeling of well-being.23. Eating a well balanced diet is one of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy

body.24. But, let’s be honest, eating well is easier said than done.25. We live in a society where it has become increasingly difficult to eat a healthy, well-balanced

diet.26. Childhood and teen obesity are at an all time high. 27. You Decide! What physical problems can obesity cause?28. Being overweight or obese can lead to problems such as high blood pressure, Type II diabetes,

and heart problems.29. So, what is a healthy, well-balanced diet?

Video Script: Maintaining a Healthy Body30. Eating well means getting all the nutrients the body needs in the correct amounts. Breaking

food down into food groups can help us think about and eat foods that contain a balance of nutrients.

31. A tool that helps illustrate the major food groups is the food pyramid.32. Each color on the food pyramid represents a different food group.33. Using the new food pyramid from the US Department of Agriculture, and other resources it’s

possible for you to find your daily nutrient requirements based on your age, your gender, and the amount of physical activity you do in a day.

34. Let’s take a look at the dietary requirements for a sixteen-year-old girl who exercises 30 to 60 minutes per day.

35. A girl of normal body weight should consume about 2000 calories a day.36. About six ounces a day should come from the grains food group.37. This might consist of one English muffin, 2 small pancakes, 1/2 cup brown rice, 1/2 cup pasta,

and 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal.38. She should eat about 2 1/2 cups of vegetables.39. This might translate to one large stalk of celery, one cup of green peas, one cup of leafy greens,

and one ear of corn.40. To be healthy it’s recommended that she eat two cups of fruit a day which could consist of 16

seedless grapes, one large peach, and one medium wedge of cantaloupe.41. From the milk, yogurt, and cheese group three cups per day is recommended for a sixteen-year-

old girl. 42. This could consist of one 8-ounce cup of milk, two 4-ounce containers of yogurt, and one cup

of frozen yogurt.43. She should also eat 5.5 ounces from the meat and beans group.44. This could consist of a small piece of meat, fish, or poultry, one egg, 1/4 cup of cooked dried

beans, and 12 almonds.45. The allowance for oils is six teaspoons a day. Oils include vegetable oils, mayonnaise, Italian

dressing, Thousand Island dressing, and peanut butter, to name a few.46. In selecting foods it’s recommended that you choose foods low in fat and low in salt.47. Nutritionists also recommend eating a wide variety of foods.48. Eating a balanced diet isn’t easy. It takes knowledge and some effort to eat well.49. Graphic Transition – Physical Activity and Rest50. Have you ever noticed that you feel more energetic and refreshed when you exercise regularly?51. This is because the body benefits from exercise. It’s recommended that healthy people

vigorously exercise at least four to five times a week for 60 minutes.52. Vigorous exercise involves getting your heart rate higher and breathing hard.53. Exercises you enjoy doing such as soccer, football, basketball, field hockey, swimming,

lacrosse, skiing, and running are great ways to give your body a workout.54. There are numerous benefits of exercise including weight control,…55. … the maintenance of strong bones, muscles, and joints,…56. … and, the prevention of many diseases,

revitalizing itself.60. Generally speaking, teenagers need a lot more sleep than older people.61. Graphic Transition – Mental Health62. Humans are very emotional organisms.63. Just think about the wide range of emotions you’ve already experienced today.64. We’re all familiar with positive emotions such as joy, happiness, empathy, love, and self-

satisfaction.65. While these emotions are common, it’s also normal to experience less positive emotions such as

sadness, jealousy, stress, anger, frustration, and fear. 66. Recognizing, understanding, and managing emotions is one key to developing a positive self-

image. It’s also a key component of good mental health.67. A bad self-image and poor mental health can lead to serious problems such as chronic

depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, self-destructive behaviors, and bad social relationships.68. It you struggle with these emotional patterns, or have doubts about your mental health, it’s very

important that you seek help.69. Graphic Transition – Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs70. So far we’ve discussed several things that you can do to maintain a healthy body. 71. Now, we’ll talk about things you should not do if you want your body to remain healthy.72. You wouldn’t want to give your pet chewing tobacco,…73. … and you wouldn’t water one of your favorite houseplants with alcohol – it would make them

sick, or could even kill them.74. Similarly, you shouldn’t put harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, or

unprescribed medicines in your body.75. Why not? Alcohol and tobacco can damage the brain, nerve tissues, and other vital organs, and

the harm these substances cause can be long-lasting.76. Furthermore, most of these substances, especially taken in excess, can alter judgment and

inhibit physical capabilities. Every year thousands of teens are killed in accidents where people were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

77. Drug or alcohol addiction is a physical dependency that takes control of all aspects of a person’s life.

78. Another reason to avoid drugs, alcohol, and tobacco is that most are illegal for teenagers to use. Being arrested as a teen adds many difficult complications to your life.

79. The best thing to do is to stay away from these harmful substances. Instead, enjoy all the other kinds of foods and activities that life has to offer.

80. Graphic Transition – Injury Prevention81. If you have ever broken a bone, cut yourself, or been bruised, you have a good idea of how

much these injuries can hurt, and how they can limit your regular, daily activities.82. One of the leading causes of injuries and accidental death are car accidents.

Video Script: Maintaining a Healthy Body 83. In the United States alone over 30,000 thousand people are killed each year in car accidents. 84. Many of these tragedies could have been avoided if passengers were wearing seat belts. 85. Don’t drive or ride in a car without wearing your seat belt 86. And, never drive a car under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These substances impair your

judgment. 87. You Observe! What important piece of safety equipment is this skateboarder missing? 88. He’s missing a helmet. Thousands of accidental head injuries, some resulting in permanent

brain damage and death, could have been prevented by wearing protective helmets. 89. Protective helmets should be worn while bicycling, roller blading, skiing, snowboarding, or

playing any sport where a head injury is possible. 90. There are many other ways that injuries can occur, such as drowning, acts of violence, falls,

power tool injuries, fire, and ATV accidents. As you get older and start to work you may use potentially dangerous equipment in hazardous occupations.

91. While there are many dangers in life, you shouldn’t live life in fear. But it is it is important to develop an attitude that focuses on safety and injury prevention. In everything you do,

think about safety first. 92. And, remember that it is always easier to prevent an accident than it is to deal with its

consequences. 93. Graphic Transition – Regular Medical Visits 94. Chances are your family introduced you to good medical care as a baby, by taking you to a

pediatrician. 95. A pediatrician is a medical doctor that specializes in treating children. 96. Besides trying to identify any potential physical problems, the pediatrician immunized you

against life-threatening diseases such as polio, smallpox, measles, mumps, and other diseases. 97. As a teenager and young adult the responsibility may fall upon you to regularly seek medical

attention. So, what should you do? 98. To start with, a physician or physician’s assistant should examine you at least once a year,

even if you aren’t sick. 99. In a regular medical examination the doctor may listen to your heart and lungs, take your

pulse, measure your blood pressure, try to identify any physical problems, and talk with you about your health.

100. Taking care of your teeth is also a very important part of maintaining your healthy body. 101. Beyond brushing and flossing your teeth two to three times a day, you should have regular

dental examinations every 6 to 12 months.102. You Decide! What is an optometrist or ophthalmologist?103. These medical professionals specialize in eye treatment.104. It’s recommended that you have your eyes examined once a year by a school nurse or eye

specialist.105. So, as you’ve seen, there are several regular medical examinations you should have to help

your body stay healthy.

1. A vaccine is a product that causes the body to develop immunity to a certain disease.2. Immunity is the body’s ability to resist a disease.3. Ten different types of vaccines are recommended during childhood by the US Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.4. Answers will vary.5. You need a yellow fever vaccine when you travel to tropical countries. This is because yellow fever is present in some tropical climates, but not necessarily where you live.

Understanding Food Labels p. 24-251. Answers will vary.2. The cereal has 110 calories per serving which is less than the other alternatives.3. The cereal is the best choice because, unlike the other two foods, it contains no saturated fats or trans fats.4. The cereal is the best choice based on vitamins and minerals because overall it contains more of these nutrients based on percent daily value.5. There are 160mg of sodium in the toaster pastries, 190mg in the cereal, and 420mg in the waffles. If you were trying to eat a diet low in sodium, you should avoid the waffles.6. The cereal is the healthiest choice. It would be good also to eat fruits, skim milk, and orange juice along with it.

Bicycle accident: The severity of this accident could have been prevented by wearing a helmet. Wearing sneakers instead of flip-flops also could have helped.

Accidental poisoning: This accident could have been prevented by keeping the bleach out of the child’s reach. The mother could have put the bleach away before answering the phone, or she could have decided not to answer the phone at that time.

Dog Bite: The girl should not have continued to approach the dog after it began to display signs of aggressive behavior. Instead she should have contacted local authorities to let them know that there was a potentially aggressive dog on the loose.

Fire: You should never play ball across or around a fire, or engage in any other form of horse play which could result in someone falling in the fire.

Car accident: Driving is a great responsibility and requires your full attention. Other activities such as putting on make up, talking on the phone and text messaging should not be done while driving a vehicle.

Name:

Visual Learning Company21Maintaining a Healthy Body

Name:Accident AlternativesBackground: If you have ever broken a bone, cut yourself, or been bruised, you have a good idea of how much these injuries can hurt, and how they can limit your regular, daily activities. One of the leading causes of injuries and accidental death are car accidents. In the United States alone over 30,000 thousand people are killed each year in car accidents. Many of these tragedies could have been avoided if passengers were wear-ing seat belts. Don’t drive or ride in a car without wearing your seat belt. And, never drive a car under the influence of drugs or alcohol. These substances impair your judgment.

There are many other ways injuries can also occur. For example, thousands of accidental head injuries, some resulting in permanent brain damage and death, could have been prevented by wearing protective helmets. Protective helmets should be worn while bicycling, roller blading, skiing, snowboarding, or playing any sport where a head injury is possible. There are many other ways that injuries can occur, such as drowning, acts of violence, falls, power tool injuries, fire, and ATV accidents. As you get older and start to work you may use potentially dangerous equipment in hazardous occupations. While there are many dangers in life, you shouldn’t live life in fear. But, it is important to develop an attitude that focuses on safety and injury prevention. In everything you do, think about safety first. And, remember that it is always easier to prevent an accident than it is to deal with its consequences.

Directions:Listed below are several descriptions of accidents resulting in personal injury. Most of these accidents could have been avoided or minimized if alternative measures were taken. Read each situation and while working with a partner, develop some alternative courses of action that could have been taken to avoid or minimize the consequences of the accident. Write down your ideas in the spaces provided.

Materials: Pen or pencil, accident descriptions.

Bicycle accident: A young man is riding his bicycle home after work. The route home takes him down a busy street. He is not wearing a helmet, and is wearing shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops. A car swerves into the bike lane causing the young man to fall. The fall results in a large scrape on his leg, a head concussion and a broken arm. What actions could the young man have taken to have potentially lessened the severity of the accident?

Accidental poisoning: A mother is using bleach to clean the bathroom. The phone rings and she goes to answer the phone leaving the bleach out on the bathroom floor. While she is on the phone her one and a half year old crawls into the bathroom and ingests the bleach. What precautions could have been taken to prevent the one and a half year old child from accidently ingesting the bleach?

Name:Immunization

Background: You probably remember going to the doctor to receive a shot or oral medication when you were young. But do you know the purpose of the vaccinations you received? Vaccines cause the body to develop immunity to certain diseases.

Immunity is the ability of the body to resist a disease. Believe it or not, vaccines actually contain weak or dead versions of disease-causing viruses or bacteria. These viruses and bacteria aren’t strong enough to overwhelm the body and cause disease. Instead, they cause the body to produce antibodies which help fi ght off the real virus or bacteria if it enters the body. The immune system then remembers how to make those same antibodies. Sometimes it is necessary to administer a vaccine several times in order to develop immunity.

Vaccines are most commonly given by injection, or orally by swallowing the vaccine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends ten different vaccines be administered between birth and 18 years of age. By now you have probably already had most of those vaccinations. It is very important to vaccinate against several particularly dangerous diseases, including diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B., rotavirus, meningitis and polio. Often children are also vaccinated against less dangerous diseases such as varicella, also known as chicken pox. However, varicella is rarely life-threatening so it is also safe to contract the disease to develop immunity. You may also get a yearly vaccine against infl uenza. There are other vaccines that are necessary when you travel to foreign countries. This is because different diseases are more prevalent in certain countries. For example, if you travel to a tropical country, you may need vaccines against yellow fever and typhoid. Your physician should have a record of every immunization you have had. You should have a physical examination every year, where the doctor will check to be sure that all of your vaccines are up to date.

Questions:1. What is a vaccine?

2. What is immunity?

3. How many different types of vaccines are recommended?

4. Were you vaccinated against the chicken pox, or did you have the disease?

5. When do you need a yellow fever vaccine? Why?
