February marks our half way point of the school year. Semester
two has begun and we are looking forward to the Senior Cager
Basketball tournament (February 18th-21st) and the Grade 8
Information Night (February 17th).
Semester 1 report cards will be distributed on February 1st,
2016. These reports will not include the grade 12 diploma exam
results as those marks are received later in the month through the
department of Education, Culture and Employment.
In just four weeks we will have two school trips over the March
Break. A group of 14 students are off on a humanitarian adventure
in Kenya and another 31 students are off to see the sights of
Morocco and Spain.
The SJF Drama department has announced that The Addams Family
will be this year’s Spring Production. The auditions took place in
January and rehearsals have already begun.
As winter continues to hold on tightly, we urge students to come
to school prepared with proper winter attire.
I wish the staff and students a wonderful second semester.

Wear Lavender on World Cancer Day, Thursday, February 4th,
2016!
Every day our sport school students are benefitting from the
generous donationsand support from the following companies.
This is a day to talk about cancer, to raise awareness and
education about the disease, and to inspire action. Youth and
adults alike have an important role in the conversation about
chronic disease. Each of us can make healthy choices to reduce our
risk of cancer.
One-third of cancers are preventable through eating healthy
foods, maintaining a healthy body weight, and being physically
active. Choosing to live a healthy lifestyle is important at every
age.
On World Cancer Day, students and teachers are encouraged to
wear the colour lavender, the colour of cancer awareness. The City
of Yellowknife Fieldhouse walking track will also be open free to
the public 6:30am- 10pm. Please join us in raising cancer awareness
and taking action in healthy living.
For more information about World Cancer Day visit:

to be readers and writers, therefore applying the literacy skills
that they are learning!

• Never post your personal information, such as a cell phone
number, home number, home address, or your location on any social
networking site or through mobile apps like Snapchat or
Instagram.
• Never meet in person with anyone you first “met” on the
internet. If someone asks to meet you, tell your parents or
guardian right away. Some people may not be who they say they
are.
Nicolas's star has been rising since last summer when he was
achieving personal bests and setting NWT records in running at the
Western Canada Games. Since then, he has excelled in two major
skiing competitions in the south and secured himself a spot on the
NWT's Arctic Winter Games team which will compete in Greenland in
March.
As a Sports School student, Nicolas is a dedicated athlete who
is committed to nothing but the best for himself and his
classmates. He leads by example, is open to new learning and does
what it takes to reach his potential. Bravo Nicolas, we look
forward to following your rising star in the second semester and in
the year's to come.

L’unique but de YK1
est d’offrir un enseignement de qualité, en français, aux étudiants
de Yellowknife. Merci d’appuyer l’immersion!

The Humanities 9 class recently concluded the Healthy
Relationships Plus Program, which was taught as part of their Health
curriculum. The Healthy Relationships Plus Program focuses on
increasing youth's awareness about unhealthy and healthy
relationships, and substance abuse, as well as improving youth's
capacity not to consume drugs, and strengthening communication and

Grade 9 students will be offered booster immunizations
for Tetanus/Diphtheria/Acellular Pertussis and any missed
immunizations.
If you have any questions, please contact Rebecca White your School Public Health Nurse in the Falcon’s Health Haven or call Rebecca at
Public Health at 920‐6585 or email
[email protected]
Other languages? Autres langues? 873-7425.
Did You Know?
•Childhood immunization does NOT provide lifelong immunity against some diseases such as; tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria and Pertussis (whooping cough). Booster shots are required to maintain immunity.
•In the last 50 years immunization has saved more lives in Canada than any other health intervention. If you decide not to be immunized you increase your chances of getting sick.
•Immunizations are safe and effective. Vaccines are continuously monitored and tested around the world and in Canada before they are approved for use
Records
If you are new to Yellowknife, within the last 5 years, please ensure that the school nurse has your student’s immunization records.
Consent
A student who can understand the side effects and benefits of immunizations can give his/her own consent for immunization. Check out our recommended Canadian websites:

Biology 20 ClassIn the Biology 20/30 program, students get the
opportunity to do hands on activities where they can explore and
investigate live animal tissue. During this lab, students dissect
and identify the parts of the sheep heart. They learn blood
movement through the heart and the vessels that carry different
types of blood. The lab also includes investigating blood pressure
and heart beat with the use of medical equipment. Sir John students
taking Science courses, have these amazing opportunities to learn
'real life' experiences in the classroom.Check with your guidance
counselor or any Science teacher for information on these amazing
courses and opportunities!
