Commodore’s Comments: The Commodore’s Laua was abso- lutely wonderful. Sandy and I, along with our family enjoyed it immensely. We appreciated every detail of the evening and all the members who joined us for this celebration. Thank you to the committee who put many hours of hard work into planning this memorable evening. The committee members included Al and Linda Hae- ger, Glen and Beth Kreinbrink, Paul and Cathy Riedl, John and Susan Brown, Chuck and Maryellen Heckman, Jay and Karin Hiller, and Rob and Penny Clayton. This club is steeped in tradition by families who have been members for years and years and many genera- tions. Serving as your Commodore has allowed me to better understand the culture of this great organization. It has also allowed me to meet and get to know many of you whom I would never have gotten to know were it not for my time on the Board. It has been a good experience and I would encour- age anyone who has not served on the Board to give it serious consideration. I am looking forward to seeing you at the annual meeting and appetizer party on Saturday, August 28, 2010. Your club is in good condition finan- cially and Board of Directors will be reporting along with Sidestays, Mem- bership, Sailing School and several special reports. Finally, as the sailing season winds down, you may want to get out on the lake and watch some of the final races of the year. The top spots are still up for grabs and the competition during the last few races will be exciting. You can check all the standings on the website and get out and cheer for your sailors at the finish line. Here’s to smooth, fun, and safe sailing. FROM THE SAILING COMMODORE I get to remind you one last time to engrave and polish your trophies. Please turn them into the yacht club ASAP. I am sure you enjoyed winning your trophy last summer, so please think of your fellow sailor and make it shine like new! It has been a privilege being the Sailing Commodore this summer. I only wish the wind would have cooperated more. Our Commodore's Cup racing went well but was plagued by our continuing light wind. In the afternoon Champion's Race, we got a little more breeze and had a real competitive race with MC representative Doug Dorn pulling out a victory in the last 75 yards to the finish! C and X sailors are already planning their strategy for next year. My thanks to Rear Commodore, Julie Haeger for all her help this past year and to all the judges and signal boat teams who volunteer to make our racing possible. Thanks to John Becker and Frank Rappold for main-taining the signal boat and Carrie Franzene for scoring all our fleets this summer. Lake Beulah is a great place with great people, we are all lucky to be a part of it! Remember we still have C and MC sailing over Labor Day weekend!

It is quite clear from the tremendous success of the C ILYA invite on Beulah that sailors love everything about Lake Beulah and the LBYC. They love the free hous-ing, the great prices, the great hospitality from the Beu-lah volunteers, and the great breeze that Beulah always has. With that said we are asking for help with the upcoming Challenge. We are looking for volunteers for lunches and dinners and any sort of other assistance you can provide. We would also be interested in donations for a raffle and if you are willing to offer fellow sailors a place to stay at your house.

If you are able to help, please contact Brian Brickler at 847-812-2052 or [email protected]. Beulah C boat sailors if you can’t sail your boat make sure you find someone who can as we hope to have all the Beulah C boats registered and racing. Also recruit your friends from other lakes to make sure they attend the Beulah Challenge. This regatta is a great way to finish up the sailing season on Beulah and always a fun time for all who participate. This regatta and its volun-teers remind everyone that attends why Beulah is the best club in the ILYA. Help maintain that reputation by offering to help in any way you can.

All adults and children are welcome. ALSO – look for a 10/10/10 party. It is a Sun-day night. Details will follow after considering the football schedule. Of course, the Packers will be winning so we will schedule for a festive time with that Sunday’s game. BUT. . . if the Bears are winning, we may need to adjust. Watch your emails for an announcement. The new social Chair will appoint the Christmas Party. If you want to serve, please contact the new social chair. Date is December 11th. This counts as the 2011 assignment.

Thanks to all of you for serving this season. It appears as we age, we need to shift assign-ments a bit. Thanks to the members who served on the fleet parties, regattas, youth nights and auction (and signal boat assign-ments). Many of you were on 4-5 committees this year. Thank you. The board will review the Wednesday night cookouts to insure larger committees next year or will consider increas-ing the price to allow more purchasing of en-trees or prepared foods. So many of you have worked so hard for the club and have ideas to help us improve. If you have a desire for next year, want to volunteer your group of friends for a special event, please give your views to the new social chair. A signup sheet will be posted

at the Annual Meeting and Trophy Dinner for you to register your next year’s desire. The social schedule will be posted by December 1st to give you all time to ask for a change. You are welcome to change at ANYTIME throughout the summer but the more we have right in the year-book, the smoother the summer.

ILYA Youth Champs - Lake Calhoun, Minnesota

The Lake Calhoun Yacht Club hosted the 15th annual ILYA Youth Championship Regatta on August 20-22. The regatta consisted of 29 420's and a few Lasers. Kate Klement & Teresa Westin represented Lake Beulah while sailing a 420 using a spinnaker and tra-peze. A large contingent of young sailors up to age 26, hailing from at least ten lakes, sailed the event. The regatta consisted of three light wind races on Saturday and four races on Sunday. A Lake Calhoun sailor, Connor Corgard, won the event while Klement/Westin placed 15th overall. Other area sailors who attended included Connor, Parker & Trevor Trepton, Nick Clemence and Dan Groskopf. PRO Tom Hodgson officiated the event on the small Lake Calhoun where motorboat traffic is strictly regulated. This metropolitan lake offers a walkway around the lake for exceptional viewing. Regatta organizers promised a great event with chartered 420s which contributed to the exceptional participation level. This is the first time the event has been run in August. The event had been held in June in recent years in Madison, utilizing the Hoofers boats.

It’s Luffable Here’s a great quote about the Sunday, August 15th X crew race - where it ALWAYS blows!

"The crew race is kind of like drunk driving; you just never know what's going to happen next." Beth Kutschen-

reuter.

Ashley Mueller enjoyed her 7th birthday at last Wednesday’s Cook Out. She said there was no other place she

wanted to be! Her parents, Jeff and Shari Mueller are prospective members and opened their house to our Float Boat Tour.

Beulah C Boats Brilliant

At Geneva ILYA By Joe Skotarzak

Thirteen, count em' THIRTEEN Beulah C-

scows took to the waters of Lake Geneva

for the hundred-and-something-ish ILYA C

Scow Championships last week. In addi-

tion, we had the Keck brothers and Maya

and Bill Murphy's son, John, in the crowd

of 67 yachts. Quite the showing! Things

got off to a pretty slow start Thursday

morning as the breezes were very light.

We started a race and sailed it to the time

limit to no avail. We went back out mid-

afternoon and ended up getting two good

races in. Race 1 had George and Pappy

Kutsch leading most of the way, before

succumbing to the pressure of two-time

ILYA champ Tim Krech. B16 still finished

second to lead a total of four top 10 Beu-

lah-ites. Race two followed immediately

and the BTeam was led by Katie and

Pappy Porter in 4th, the first of three Beu-

lah top ten’ers. The end of the day

showed some mixed up results with the

Keck brothers leading the event. Friday

we started early in hopes of getting three

races with some breeze.. Will Haeger and

Brad Roble put on Annie Haeger girl

power and started their charge, taking

2nd. We went again right away and B1

again led the charge, more girl power and

another deuce, this time just ahead of

Frank Davenport and Ron Jarecki who

were third. There was an on-water break

for some rest and hydration and lunch

and then we started the third race of the

day. The breeze was definitely up - not

quite tops-off-waves-small-dog-

warnings-Beulah-crew-race

nukin' but it was close. The sail-

ors from the little pond showed

the way on this one, as the Keck

boys and Joe Kutsch/Randy

Schmidt/Steph Roble engaged in

an epic battle up and down the

lake. To and fro they went, with

the 12, 303 and 217 in the group

trailing closely behind. Toward

the finish it got very interesting as the two

leaders got to sparring off on the right

side of the course, while the 12 and 303

worked the left. Figuring that the short-

est distance between two points was a

straight line right up the middle, and be-

ing really tired, 217 pointed right up the

middle at the port end. Chugging along

with Christine and Tina girl power hiking

their tushies off up front with arms ex-

tended overhead, we aimed for the port

end, figuring to be either third or first.

We were unable to see Kecks and Joe K,

and were just about to shoot the line just

feet from victory when the gun sounded,

victory to the OO-88! We crossed, then a

Minnetonka boat, and then Joe K. and

then Kent and Mike, all in all a fine show-

ing! We called it a day and many of us sat

on the LGYC patio and watched the storm

roll through before the dinner started,

reveling in the fact that Frank and Ron

were leading the ILYA going into the last

day!!! If it all ended, Frank and Ron

would be champs! By virtue of the throw-

out factor, Will/Brad/Annie were virtu-

ally tied for first as soon as the sixth race

started, so things were gonna get inter-

esting if we sailed! Well, we did, and they

did. Pretty fluky winds Saturday am but

we raced all the same. Frank and Ron

were quickly pushed into the soup and

thus relegated to spectator status.

The brothers Keck were up there, as were

Will and Brad. Then the wind died, so we

drifted. Then it came up and we put-

tered. Then it died and we drifted. A few

minutes before the time limit expired,

Will was out right while Keck was out left.

The breeze came in from the right and it

looked for a spell as though Will would

win the Inland and we were all going to

get to see B-rad's cool new tattoo!! Alas,

the righty died and it came left and Augie

Barkow from Pewaukee ended up winning

the event. Kecks were second, B1, 4th

and Frank and Ron dropped to 6th

, while

Zach and Vicki Clayton sailed Dadeo's B8

to a 10th overall! Kent/Mike, Joe K/

Randy/Steph and Brian/Kevin all finished

between 10 and 20, while 17 and 333

and 217 all landed in the 20's. Beyond

that we had moments of brilliance a lot of

fun and smiles from the 6, 16, 22 and 19

programs. All in all a great time had by

all, and a good showing by the B-team!

Haeger/Haeger win LBYC Mixed Doubles It was another 7:30 am start for the competitors in the mixed doubles tennis tournament on August 14th. Matt Haeger

couldn’t miss a shot and Julie Haeger found her old college form. They couldn’t be beat but Chris Kubicek and partner steady

Peggy Krueger scored an impressive second place. Pat Hudec played with Mary but had a gimpy knee. Don and Carol Stein

had no excuses. These photos were taken afterwards when everyone was dripping. Roy Gerloff presented the trophy.

2010 X-Boat Blue Chip by Charlie Kutschenreuter

The Blue chip was held in its usual loca-

tion at Cedar Lake Yacht Club. Team

Beulah had five sailors representing,

these sailors were: B1 Maryclaire Kier-

nan and Sarah Kubicek, B6 Cullen Barr

and John Berg, B11 Andrea Sullivan and

Brooke Komas, B16 Charlie Kutschen-

reuter and Alex Keck, and also B111

Kate Klement and Teresa Westin. The

first day led to no sailing, this was due to

lack of wind and storms. The second day

brought much better wind and three

races. Beulah’s best boat was B16 Char-

lie Kutschenreuter and Alex Keck finish-

ing in fourth.

Its the Beulah Blue Chip Girls: Mary Claire Kiernan, Andrea Sullivan, Sarah Kubi-

cek, Teresa Westin, Brooke Komas, and Kate Klement Photo was taken at Cedar Lake, the

night of the Blue Chip party/dance.

Check your photos, take some more! Be sure to send in your photos for the 2011 LBYC Yearbook.

Your photos make it great!

The Galvanized Cup is Up For Grabs September 11-12th

by Hardy Will l

Our annual bitterly contested contest for the Galvanized Cup with Lauderdale Lakes will take place here at Lake Beulah on the weekend of September 11-12. This is a team handicap event for MC's. Last year Beulah won the cup which we had lost the year before. Beulah expects to field a strong team to retain the cup. The highlight of the event is the final race on Sunday from our Yacht Club up to Stringer's Bridge and back. PRO Milt Haeger will calculate the handicaps, set the tricky courses and run the event in his usual profes-sional manner.
