Welcome to the

Fair

The Saanich Fair is Western Canada’s oldest continuous agricultural Fair and is marking its 147th year in

2014. This year’s theme is “Saanich Fair and 4-H,

Learning Together” and there will be plenty of 4-H youth, their projects and animals to visit and learn

about at the Fair. The Fair provides a wonderful outing for all ages. Come on

out and experience the country farm atmosphere. There are multicultural food booths on offer. There are many farm

animals to see and rides available for the young and faint of heart.Of course, there is a great deal of entertainment to amuse you and get

your toes tapping. The Fair also has markets, exhibits and more! This year, there is once again a full lineup of entertainers on stage. Some

performers are coming back to the Fair and there are plenty of newcomers to experience over the three days of the event.

Check out the KidZone, Farm Games and three days of continuous horse shows. There will be cows, llamas, emus, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, pheasants, rabbits, alpacas, donkeys and cavies for all to see.

The Midway rides, food booths and vendor stalls are also big attractions all weekend. Having trouble finding your car in the parking lot at the end of your stay? There will be farm signs posted to show you what area you are parked in.

May you have a wonderful stay at our event and plan to come back again.

At the 147th Saanich Fair, the theme is 4-H, Learning Together.

The Fair

is a show-case of young people’s work with ani-mals, large and small, and their arts and crafts from a year of hard work.

While the Fair will see this work judged, the barns have been welcoming 4-H youth for years.

Visitors to the Saanich Fair will enjoy

seeing what 4-H can do.This year, 4-H in B.C. is celebrating its

100th anniversary. Learn more about it at the Fair.

For 2014, organizers of the Saanich Fair have created two special evenings of music — one country and the other rock and roll.

Saturday night, August 30, is Country Night, featuring Bour-bon County, Bucko & Toad and The Tumblin’ Dice.

Sunday night, August 31, is Rock & Roll Night, featuring

Phoenix, Rukus and classic Canadian band Chilliwack.Check out page 8 of this program for the days and times of

each performance on the Thrifty Foods Community Stage.Starting here are bios and pictures of each musician, band

and performance troupe at this year’s Saanich Fair.— PNR

Chilliwack

With an irresistible desire to swing and an affinity for the blues, this dynamic vocalist performs an exciting repertoire that covers a wide range of music. Swing, Texas-swing, country blues, rockin’ blues and jazz are all performed with her signature style and vibrant stage presence. Backed by a group of outstanding musicians whose talents are showcased throughout the performance, this is a show you won’t want to miss!

Headlining rock & roll night at the Saanich Fair this year is iconic Canadian band, Chilliwack! One of this country’s top recording acts of the 1970s and ‘80s, Chilliwack is known for its songs like Lonesome Mary, My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) and Whatcha Gonna Do. Thier music has garnered them critical and international acclaim.Led by lead guitarist and vocalist Bill Henderson throughout the many iterations of the band’s lineup, Chilliwack has been making the local music scene on the Saanich Peninsula in recent weeks - with performances in Sidney and Central Saanich.Don’t miss this great Canadian band at the Saanich Fair on Sunday night, August 31.

Boogaloo En Orbit

The Tumblin’ Dice

Boogaloo En Orbit is an original Latin Jazz, Twist, Boogaloo six-piece band that’s just made for dancing.Based in Victoria, Boogaloo En Orbit keeps ‘em dancing and keeps ‘em laughing with original conga line music with a Chicano Aztlanian edge from urban Southern California. Their songs are new, entertaining, funny, at times profound and always danceable.

The Tumblin’ Dice are a ‘New Country’ band out of Victoria.Even though their live shows feature both covers and originals, the band suffers no identity crisis as their own original tunes provide the same feel-good party experience as the songs they cover.Since their formation in 2011, The Tumblin’ Dice are widely known as the official house band for the infamous “Gone Country

Live” events held at Upstairs Cabaret in Victoria each month. It has been these performances that have enabled the band to gel musically and perfect their signature vocal harmonies. Repeatedly drawing huge crowds to see their effusive live performances earned them a spot as the house band for Sunfest Country Music Festival 2013, the largest Country Music festival on Vancouver Island.

Bourbon County

Bucko & ToadIt’s the simplicity of the songs that make Bucko & Toad what they are — a good little alt country band, writing great songs out of Victoria. Consisting of a husband and wife duo, what started out as a bedroom recording session turned out to become a ‘real’ band says Kelly (Toad) of the group.“Kenn (Bucko) was writing country songs and he wanted to get a publishing deal in Nashville. So he would record in our spare bedroom and he would have me come in and sing and give feedback. It just grew from there.” Kenn recalls getting quite excited upon hearing how well Kelly could sing. “She would always listen to me practice without ever letting on she could sing, and I found that to be so endearing. So when I initially had the idea to ask her, I wasn’t sure what to expect. As soon as I heard her I thought she was perfect.”

Bourbon County is a Victoria-based trio offering the best sound and set list for pub entertainment, weddings and private parties on Vancouver Island. The talented members have years of experience on stage and are at the top of their craft. Each performance brings vibrant and engaging experience for their audience, with the trio playing songs to satisfy everyone’s preferences. With a constantly evolving set list, the group is able to customize their sound for each event. With a focus on country and pop, with some top 40, classic rock and dance hits thrown in, Bourbon County offers a unique repertoire among the Island’s live music performers.

Town of S idney Mayor and Council of the Town of Sidney congratulate the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society on another year’s Saanich Fall Fair. This fun, family event is one of the highlights of the year on the Peninsula. Best wishes for a successful event!

“Since I came to live on the Peninsula, one of the annual events which I have most enjoyed is the three day Saanich Fair. My children looked forward to it every year, loving the animal events and the exhibits. I think it is the emphasis on agriculture

and community involvement that makes it so special. The variety of activities, the competitions and the way the event represents the end of summer calls visitors from all over the region. Many North Saanich residents participate in the baking, preserving, food and fl ower growing competitions. Our children ride horses and show livestock. I very much look forward to seeing the crowds again this year, enjoying the local harvest and greeting one another during these wonderful days.” Alice Finall

Doctor Bones is a Victoria blues/gospel blues band with a mission to bring uplifting music to people who live and love the blues. The band’s repertoire includes blues funk, jazzy blues and blues rock for greater appeal. They have played B.C. fairs and festivals and local bars but mostly give back to the community by playing at various

fundraisers, downtown service agencies and prisons. Returning to the Fair, the band features Dale Manason (guitar, vocals), Jack Funk (drums), Anthony Reynolds (bass, vocals), John Bones (harp, vocals), David Nicol (keyboard) and Gail Bones (vocals, percussion). Fairs, exhibitions, schools, sporting events, grand openings, private parties, corporate events and festivals, Dan the One Man Band’s career has spanned more than two decades and five continents.Dan Duguay credits his success with the fact that he is passionate about music and he loves to see people laugh and have fun.Dan caught the performance bug in his early teen years when he discovered his singing voice. For the next few years he could often be found singing and playing for anyone who would listen. Once he decided to get other parts of his body in on the orchestration his destiny was sealed.Even though he has been fortunate enough to play music for a liv-ing and has performed literally thousands of shows and travelled to every habitable continent, he still gets the biggest thrill from the spontaneity and interaction with the audience. The ability to roll with the punches and leave the audience with music in their hearts may explain why Dan the One Man Band is invited back time and again to festivals and events.

Phoenix

Dave CormierNot many people take the chance to go down “The road not taken”, the one they thought they left behind. But you may find that road has been weaving it’s way through your path the whole time and that’s what Dave Cormier discovered in making his self titled debut album Cor-Me-Eh. Dave grew up in Nova Scotia, an area steeped in music tradition. Dave’s passion for music wasn’t in the classical music of his dad or the traditional music the area is known for but in the raw energy of rock and roll. Dave packed his bags and headed West where he joined a punk band as a bass player and began his musical journey. When that didn’t pan out he decided to form his own alternative rock band and moved to Winnipeg. Later, Dave decided to leave the band and move back to Nova Scotia.Although Dave took a sabbatical from his music and moved to British Columbia a couple of years later, it was never far from his thoughts as he continued to write the occasional song and indulge his passion for guitars. It was during a conversation with a friend in 2011 that Dave decided to write songs again in earnest. Everything came together in the studio resulting in a fantastic rock/blues record that retains a timeless quality, but still has a modern feel. The beautiful and edgy lead guitar playing of  Zak Cohen and the chunky and innovative rhythm guitar of Dave Cormier coupled with the powerhouse rhythm section of Pat Stewart and Doug Elliott really sets the stage.

Phoenix is a four-piece rock-and-roll cover band based in Victoria, B.C.Since 1994, they have been performing classic hits from the 50s to the 80s in and around Victoria and Vancouver Island.Since 1995, Phoenix has been the ‘house band’ at Oldfield Orchard’s Octoberfest. In 2001, Phoenix opened for The Commitments at the Fleet Club and performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, sharing the stage with such names as Brooks & Dunn and Glen Campbell.During the past several years, Phoenix has also performed at numerous Cops For Cancer benefit concerts.Phoenix continues to perform around Victoria at major venues including the Sooke & Sidney Legions (Army & Navy) and the P.O.’s Mess (DND) as well as at private functions (benefits, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, reunions.)

Jordano the Great of Tricky Magic Productions is a comedy magi-cian based in Victoria, B.C., providing professional magic for Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and other parts of B.C. Jordano has been performing magic professionally since 2003 — in theatres, schools, and for weddings, festivals, birthdays and corpo-rate events. He is Victoria’s top street magician, entertaining crowds of 250-plus during the summer in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

The Great Jordano’s show is 30 to 90 minutes of clean fun comedy magic using audience participation, stunning sleights with rings, money, silks, cards, sponge balls, ropes, linking rings and his famous cups and balls routine. Jordano also performs comedy mentalism with spellbinding predic-tions and amazing feats of the mind. He is entertaining and funny to watch, and he’s always a step ahead of the audience — a sign of an accomplished magician.

Bobby The Wizard Cole is a multi-faceted bilingual (French and English) entertainer who has performed across Canada and the USA. Bobby’s career began in his teens in Vancouver as a musician play-ing in coffee houses, including the Soft Rock Café. He then attended and completed the Jazz Course at Malaspina University. Soon after, he met and performed as a musician with the famous Quebec juggling duo Jean and Nicolette. He quickly discovered a love for juggling. He made his way to Mon-treal in the 70s where he met and became friends with the founders

and the first cast members of Cirque du Soleil. While there, Bobby added unicyling and stilt walking to his reper-toire. After his years in Quebec and touring down to New Orleans, Bobby returned to Canada and continued to build a solid act.He performed as a featured entertainer for over 30 years at distin-guished events such as the XV Olympic Winter Games, Parliament Hill New Year’s Eve, Canadian Museum of Civilization, Expo ‘86, Plaza of Nations, Cirque du Soleil and the Just for Laughs Festival. In 2006, Bobby settled in Summerland, BC, where he is co-owner of the Music and Arts School of Summerland. Born and raised in Victoria, Tristan Thompson’s family knew he was going to be a performer at the tender age of six months old when they noticed him dancing to Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West” as he held on the coffee table. At the age of two, Tristan began singing Red Hot Chili Peppers’ tunes at the top of his lungs. He would soon pull out paint cans and use them as drums or he’d play the spoons to music he was listening to and sing along. After each “performance” in front of his family, he would always bow and say “Thank you, thank you very much” – yes, Tristan was definitely destined for the entertainment industry.A major turning point for Tristan was learning so much more about Michael Jackson’s music after his death. Tristan soaked up everything he could regarding MJ on You-Tube. He also started to learn every nuance to MJ’s moves while dis-secting all of his videos. Soon after, Tristan would end up performing MJ’s moves at a school dance and he quickly earned the nickname “MJ”.In the summer of 2010, Tristan would busk in downtown Vic-toria where he would show off his “MJ” moves. On the July 1st weekend, the local police had to move his gath-ering audience along so the congested traffic could continue.Soon after, Tristan recorded a cover of the song “Don’t You Worry Child” and a video for the track was uploaded to You-Tube. Thousands of views later, the video caught the attention of songwriter/record label owner, Tylor Johnson, and a record contract between Tristan Thompson and Chatter Records was signed.
