    Congratulations to Sir William Atkin-

son, one of Britain's most distin-guished educationalists and a long-time

supporter of the London Schools and

the Black Child initiative. He is head

of the Phoenix High School in Shep-herds Bush London which has cometop of Government league table for the

school with the most value added. And

this is a school which was once known(before Sir William took it over) as one

of the worst in the country. Offsted now describes it as remarkable. SirWilliam, who has over 30 years of teaching experience and was knighted in

2008, says :"To work with these youngsters, you have to be not only compe-

tent and with a good knowledge base but be prepared to go that extra mile

and that's not just now and then but routinely, every day." A message for usall.

    Innings

one innings per team Under 18 they play25 over's per matchOver 19 they play 50 over's per matchSo the player are not fielding for too long each

innings is split in half, so they play in quarters (9over's in Under 8s and 12 over's in Under 9s).

    Batting

Each player getsa set number of

balls. If they getout the team

loses three runs, but the batterkeeps going. So

    whack the ball

    and runitdoesnt really

matter if you get run out. That isHAVE FUN!!! Fielding

Each team has a maximum of ten players, with only

eight (including bowler and wicketkeeper) on thefield at a time. After each over the field rotates sothat each player goes to a new position and the

rested fielders come on and so on..

How to play cricketBowlingEach player bowls one six-ball over in turn. It is a

14 metre pitch in Under 8s and 16 metres in Under9s.

There are two different types of bowlers, pacers

being the quick's and spinners having the ability to

turn the ball from one side to another. A single act

of bowling the ball towards the batsman is called a

    ballor a deliv-

    ery. Bowlers

    bowl deliveries

    in sets of six,

    called an over.

    Once a bowler

    has bowled

    their over, one

    of their team

    mates will bowl

    an over from

    the other end of

    the pitch.

Once you understand the basics of how to play

cricket, its easy to build up your knowledge. The

same principles and terms apply to every form of

the game, so once youve developed a good foun-

dation, the skys the limit. This is true for young

or old, male or female. And, if theres a young

cricketer in your family, youll have a great time

supporting them too. Heres a good start to your

journey. The picture shows the heart of t he action

on a cricket field. The two sets of wickets are 22

yards apart, with the cut area of the pitch between

    them.

    Warming for cricket

    When batting and bowl-

    ing:

    Bowling is acomplex

    action thatworks al-most allyour joints.

    Make sureyou stretchthese joints

during yourwarm upWear proper shoes for stability and correctlyfitting pads to help you move freely and provide

    your body with support.

    Playing in general:

Warm up. If muscles arent prepared by a good

stretching routine this can lead to lack of flexi-

bility and injury. A warm down may also help

with those post match aches. Watch the pres-sure points. Your knees, shoulders and ankles

are the most obvious joints at risk for cricketers

due to the repetitive nature of actions such as

bowling, batting and fielding. Keep drinking

fluidsmuscles and joints work better when

    you are not dehydrated

Remember, it is better to be fit to play cricketthen playing to get fit

    When fielding:

    Try to move

around whenfielding. Stand-ing in the same

    position causestension in your

    joints and will

    increase thechances of

    injury.Keep warm,wear a jumper,

warm muscles can respond quicker to sudden

movements. You dont know when you may becalled on for that winning throw from the

boundary. Pain is a warning sign do notignore it. If you do injure yourself, use icerather than heat and if the pain persists, seek

help from your doctor or BCA chiropractor.

Health and SafetySafety management is a priority at the MCG andthe MCC is proud to be a leader in health and

safety in the events industry. The MCC has certification in the Victorian WorkCover Authoritys Safetyman system at Ad-

vanced Level for both the MCG and several other

MCC-managed grounds. The MCG was the first venue in Australia to haveits safety system accredited by a regulatory au-thority.

It is our aim to create a safe venue for all employ-ees, contractors and visitors. We achieve this bycontinually reviewing and improving our safetysystems, identifying and controlling hazards, and

by constantly talking about safety with all ourstaff and contractors. This means our people, both full-time and part-

time, have a genuine concern for the safety of thepeople they are entrusted to look after both on

    balls with twosixes and twofours.

Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi could not have

picked a better time to return to form as a half-century and two wickets from him helped his side

beat South Africa by seven runs to seal a spot in

the ICC World Twenty20 final. Afridi smashed51 in 34 balls to propel Pakistan to 149 for fourand then took two wickets, bowling his four

overs for just 16 runs as South Africa closed on142 for five as they wrote another unwanted

chapter in their history of semi-final losses.

    Brian Lara doubts

that the huge popu-larity that Twen-

    ty20 enjoys wouldeventually mark the

death of artistic andclassic cricket. Theformer Test special-

ist and world recordholder had a fewstint with his bat in

T20 arena playing for Mumbai Champs in theICL. The classic batsman was an utter failure inthe miniature cricket where only the big hitters

survived. Lara hopes that artistic batsmen couldhandle the pressure of the way too limited 20overs cricket and keep the soul of it alive. He said

that cricket has been a dying sport in the pastfew years, and the arrival of T20 has revived it.But, he fears if that would be the end of classiccricketing genius. Brian Lara has many records to

his name including the top scorer in an innings inTest history. The legendary player anticipatesthat once the players realize its not always big

hitting that works, the top talent will come out.Even though T20 favors the shorter version hasinvited many new fans for the game. Lara saidthat it would be a great benefit for cricket and thenew fan base would make the sport even better.

    I expect Flintoff,who is nicknamed

after Fred Flint-stone, to be acrucial player inthe coming

    months. He isprobably the best

all-round crick-eter in the worldat the momentand I believe he is

the only player in the England team who could geta game for Australia. It is not a good news for theEngland T20 Team. Star player and all-rounder

Andrew Flintoff was ruled out of the ICC Twen-ty20 World Cup 2009 starting 5th June 2009. TheEngland management said that Flintoff is still not

fit and has not recovered from the recent kneesurgery. Flintoff while playing the IPL 2009 T20

in South Africa for the Chennai Super Kings torethe meniscus of his right knee. The England Man-agement had named Flintoff in playing team squad

but he had very little chance of being fit by 5th

June, when England play The Netherlands in thefirst game of ICC T20 World CUp 2009 in the

    opening match.
