MADF est 2012 MINEHEAD AND DUNSTER WARGAMES CLUB 9-11 NOVEMBER 2012. By Paul Davies Sounds like the ideal combination, a weekend of wargaming, and in a pub too! Christmas had clearly come early for the small but dedicated group of wargamers who started to turn up at the venue from midday on the Friday, keen to make the most of the opportunity for an entire weekend’s wargaming and socialising without any distractions. As well as a good selection of games, and two pretty taxing quizzes on the Saturday evening, there was a bit of retro-gaming when the lid was lifted on the classic boardgame, Escape from Colditz. A great game and one that many wargamers of a certain age probably remember from their childhood. I certainly did! But now, a brief overview and photographs of some of the games that were played over the weekend. Wargames’ events appear in all ‘shapes and sizes’; from extremely large events like Salute, to much smaller ‘get-togethers’ between small groups of enthusiastic wargamers. One such event was MADFest 2012 which was organised by the Minehead and Dunster Wargames Club over the long weekend of the 9-11 November, and held at ‘The Old Ship Aground’ in Minehead.

Sounds like the ideal combination, a weekend of wargaming, and in a pub too! Christmas had clearly come early for the small but dedicated group of wargamers who started to turn up at the venue from midday on the Friday, keen to make the most of the opportunity for an entire weekend’s wargaming and socialising without any distractions.

OVerVieW:

I have to say that it was good to see so many games in the smaller scales. I’m a great fan of games at strategic level that allow for grand outflanking manoeuvres ‘on the table’, as well as ones that can feature the physical representation of supply lines; all gaming aspects that lend themselves particularly well to smaller scale figures, and with the quality of their design and manufacture today, I think that one really can get ‘the best of both worlds’ without sacrificing too much of the aesthetic satisfaction of the larger scales.

Apart from organising a weekend’s wargaming in a pleasant venue, the other important aim of MADFest was to raise funds for the local regiment, 40 Commando, which is currently serving in Afghanistan.

Thanks to the outstanding generosity of the companies and traders in supporting the event by donating some splendid prizes, for the various competitions and raffle, the event raised over £200. So grateful thanks to: Warlord Games, Wargames Illustrated, Pendraken Miniatures, Angel Barracks,

Specialist Military Publishing, 1 to 600 Miniatures, Minibits, S & S Models and Warrfarr Military Books.

And a very special thanks should be offered to Mel, landlady of ‘The Old Ship Aground’ who generously allowed use of the room over the weekend, free of charge, which meant that there were no additional costs for holding the event so all the money raised could go straight to 40 Commando.

The measure of the success of any event can most easily be measured by the responses of those who attended. Given that many of them were asking what would be the dates for ‘MADFest 2013’, I think we can say that it was a success, and plans are already afoot for next year’s event with some very interesting games planned.
