    Dave Marcelo, the F inals

MVP, also showed his worth ashe hammered the opposition inthe shaded lane.

This (title) is for the play-ers. This is the prize for theirhard work. This is for the SanBeda community for support-ing us all the way, Lim told Tu-pas.

RIOTS, SUPALPAL, MACHISMO AND OTHER NCAA MOMENTS

Where the games were playedBy Jose Ma.Bonifacio Escoda1924 -25The first games were played in UP PadreFaura Grounds1926 Nozaleda Park (named in honor of BishopNozaleda ) now Agrifina Circle and later became a

part of Luneta Park.1931 At the 2-thousand capacity (only one side

was for the spectators) 31st Infantry Gym(Intramuros, now Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng

Maynila, a covered cemented court like a big

    Quonset Hut)1936 Rizal Memorial Coliseum

First Bloody RiotLOSSES at times resulted to violent incidents. The first riot occurred in the early 1930s insidethe 31st Infantry Gym known as Armory. Theexchange of jeers between two schools resultedto violent fights. During one game, a quarrelconcerning a chair, a Batangueo from UST,

with the surname of Montalvo, with his bali-song (popular fan knife carried byBatangueos) stabbed to death a certain young

man with the surname of Posas. (Related tothe author by Col. Julian Malonso and Ambas-sador Carlos Valdes)

These unpleasant incidents heightened thestudents deep sense of loyalty to their respec-tive schools. It popularized the sport but Chris-tian maturity took a beating.

Foreign American and Spanish Catholic edu-cators taught their students how to accept de-feat with grace but the Filipino, whether Span-ish half breeds or Spaniards born in the Philip-pines, perceived defeat as a threat to his man-hood or ego. His small physical stature and

having a darker skin compared to the Euro-pean or American standard made height andwhite skin synonymous with honor and power.

Basketball being a contact game becameshowcase not only of skills but of machismo. The Filipino sportsman concept of honor, anoffshoot being victim of Spanish and Americancolonization made him different from others. Itmade them difficult to accept defeat even insports. Blocking a shot called supalpal in Fili-pino became synonymous to degradation.

grabbed 16 rebounds. He deserves it (MVP award),

especially in game one he playedvery well, said Lim.

Marcelo said he was very de-

termined to help the Lions. Hetold his teammates to make atough defensive stand in the dy-ing seconds to prevent a do-or-die I want to leave with achampionship and this will nothappen without the help of myteammates, said Marcelo, who

will play for NLEX in the D-League. He also thanked thecoaching staff and the San Bedacommunity for their whole-heart-ed support.

Its safe to say, though, that the

Red Army is thankful for Big Dave.Dennis U. Eroa

DAVE Marcelo reserved the best for last. Playing inhis last year for the roaring San Beda Red Lions, the 6-foot-5 Marcelo showed his true worth as he

sizzled in the NCAA mens basketball finals against the frus-trated San Sebastian Stags.

The Big Dome became Marcelosplayground in Games One and Twoto the delight of the Red Army andthe disappointment of the Stagscrowd.

A native of Puerto Galera,Marcelo plugged the hole createdby the absence of former MVP Su-dan Daniel, who got sidelined byinjury during the pre-season.

No wonder, triumphant mentorFrankie Lim sang high praises forhis muscled slotman.

We had major adjustmentswithout Su around. Its good a

thing my bigs responded to thechallenge, like Dave here. They de-livered the goods for us, said Lim.

Unafraid to bang bodies withSan Sebastian big men bannered byIan Sangalang, Marcelo normedeight points and 13.5 rebounds inthe series.

He was murderous in Game Onewith 14 points and 11 rebounds asthe Lions dominated the Stags, 75-63. San Beda made sure there

would be no Game Three as itclipped the Stags, 57-55, in GameTwo last Wednesday where Marcelo
