BREUER HOUSE I ON ELGIN STREETa h o u s e d e s i g n p r o j e c t a f t e r h o u s e a n a l y s i s

SPRING SEMESTER, YEAR 1 PETER HASDELL'S STUDIO

to learn about the architectural concepts of a house and apply them into the design of a house

in central

House to study: Breuer House I by Marcel Breuer

Massachusetts, USA, 1939Site: Elgin Street / Peel Street, Central

The short stone walls running outdoors define the site limit and link the exterior with the interior.

The big curtain window disolves the limit of the house, while the windows of different rooms are oriented differently to define the space.

Stone, wooden boards and natural fibre screens are used to create contrast and rhythmic pattern.

The stone walls wrap the patio and the veranda both horizontally and vertically, which helps link the whole house together.

The whole house is connected by a main staircase, which is also a piece of furniture that has bookshelves, like that in Breuer House I.

Windows are delibrately oriented, with the big picture window kept.

NATURAL SWIMMING POOL IN MOUNT DAVIS

NATURAL SWIMMING POOL IN MOUNT DAVISa sportsground design project with urban strategy

FALL SEMESTER, YEAR 2 MARISA YIU'S STUDIO

to design a sportsground in Kennedy Town, and work together with 2 other groupmates to illustrate an urban

strategy for Kennedy Town behind the 3 sportsgrounds

Site: Mount Davis originally a 'swimming scaffold' ( 泳棚 )

Self-defined use: natural swimming pool

Decades ago the site was occupied by cottage area thus terrace structure remains. The site is the only example of 'swimming scaffold', an old-fashioned swimming facility on Hong Kong Island. Nowadays only elderly swimmers pay regular visits. It consists of a series of narrow staircases, two temporary shelters which are used as changing rooms and office. It is quite dangerous for old people to walk through these narrow steps and swim near the barren rocks.

NATURAL SWIMMING POOL IN MOUNT DAVIS

CONCEPTS

A NATURAL SWIMMING POOL is designed which make use of micro organisms and water plants to purify water in the pool.

A Nursery is also designed, to accommodate the children from expatriates' families living nearby.

The facilities operates in different hours. The early pool and the tai chi ground opens in early morning

for the elderly.Other swimmers can reach the 25m pool by walking down

the long ramps and the changing room corridor.

Ramps are used for connecting the terraces. Thus barrier free access is promoted in the site.

Kennedy Town has been devleoped since Hong Kong had been the colony of Britain. Many activities which were popular in Hong Kong in the old days has become old-fashioned to Hong Kong people but their traces can still be found in Kennedy Town. Therefore we try to revitalize and transform the town in relationship to Kennedy Town people by using the waterfront.(Groupmates: Kenneth Chak, Sze Ivy)

FALL SEMESTER, YEAR 3 KOON WEE'S STUDIO (SHANGHAI)

to develop a series of modules which can have different performances under an environmental factor, and use this module

to build a pavilion with self defined programme

Site: People's Park, ShanghaiMaterial: BambooFactor: Acoustics

Programme: Meditation

MODULE DEVELOPMENTa small semi-enclosed chamber, where the inner part is for meditation while the outer part can help absorbing undesirable noise from outside.

knotting technique is used.

holes are cut on bamboo stems such that sound is produced by the wind blowing.

SOUND INSULATION : PARTICLE TESTincident sound wave is blocked by layers of modules effectively.

DEVELOPMENT ON FORM OF PAVILIONMandala is a concentric diagram with a center point, meaning attention focusing.Walking deeper and deeper towards the central sanctuary, the mind is getting refreshed and finds serenity. After the relievement one has to go back to the reality.Turns are to slow down the pace of visitors.Programmes criteria. From the section we can see different inclination angle of the modules. The exhibition hall is the most important place so it is centred.Interstitial spaces are created along the walkways for exhibition use.

The shape is generated by the sightline from the surroundings.

The massing is developed with different faces tilted at different angles, so to facilitate

viewing by the surrounding highrises.

The three building blocks has glass and concrete as their enclosure. Their location is determined by the function and the shadow mapping done by using Ecotect. For example, the surroundings will be covered by concrete if there is a screening room, or there are some projections on the facade of that part of the building. Locations suffering from heavy sunlight shining would also be covered with concrete so as to minimize the heat gain from the sun.

At the top floors the glass / concrete walls are made of louvres, and fans are preferred to encourage hot / cool air exchange.

Moreover, glazing has a layer of aluminum mesh at the middle, to reflect a portion of incoming sun rays out.

Solar panels will be installed on the concrete coverage at the top of the building.
