Canadian Friends of Finland Celebration of Jean SibeliusSunday, February 8 2015

IF YOU LOVE CLASSICAL MUSIC, you will definitely get to hear our beloved composer Jean

Sibelius around the world this year... it is the 150th anniversary of his birth. Canadian Friends of Finland’s host Dianne Kilback welcomed a large audience to a a full hall in the Scandinavian Centre to listen to beautiful music in the afternoon. The Runeberg Chorus opened with O Canada and Maamme sung with the audience.

The program started with Master of Ceremonies Bob Poutt. He spoke about Sibelius’ long life and versatile career: how he grow up with music, met his influen-tial people, including artists, musicians, writers, and his marriage with Aino. Two young gentleman made a presentation about Sibelius: Sebastian Poutt, playing a reporter, interviewed a young ‘Janne’ Gabriel Poutt.

After the intermission came two solo performances accompanyed with piano Janet Mowatt. First, Yasushi Ishimura, a tenor, sang ‘Diamond on the March Snow’, music by Sibelius, poem by J.J. Wecksell. Next, sop-rano Kaoru Henry sang ‘Luonnotar’, ‘ The Spirit of Nature’, lyrics by Sibelius based on the first poem of the Kalevala by Elias Lonnrot from 1849. Luonnotar, Op. 70, is a tone-poem for soprano and orchestra by Sibelius from 1913. Kaoru Henry sang it so beautifully, and along with the gorgeous film behind, the entire audience was transfixed by the birth of our Earth.

Runeberg Chorus sang songs by Jean Sibelius; ‘Kel-losävel Kallion kirkossa - The Bells of Kallio’ words by Heikki Klemetti, ‘Soi kiitokseksi Luojan’ words by A.V. Koskimies, ‘Drömmarna’ words by Jonatan Reuter, ‘Sydämeni laulu – Vale of Tuoni’ words by Aleksis Kivi, ‘Till Minnet av Albert Edelfelt’ words by J.L Runeberg.

In the end they sang ‘Finlandia Hymn’ words in Finnish by V.A. Koskenniemi and in Swedish by Joel Rundt. The Chorus Director was Janet Mowatt and Accompanist Marian Rinta.

AS THE PRESIDENT of Finnish House Society I want to thank all the volunteers for their inva-

luable work during the past year. At the risk of lea-ving someone out, I will not name the volunteers. You know, and we all know, who you are.

But before starting I would like to tell a little story of a volunteer couple that were engaged to be married but who got killed in a car accident. When they got the Pearly Gates, the bride asked Saint Peter if they could get married in Heaven. Saint Peter replied that would not be a problem because there were many pastors, ministers, and priests in Heaven. He also men-tioned that once you get married in the Heaven you cannot get divorced. The groom asked why not? Saint Peter replied because we have no lawyers in Heaven.

Taustaa 1970-luvulta

TÖRMÄSIN TOIVO KÄRJEN musiikkiin ensimmäisen ker-

ran toukokuussa 1974, kun olin parikymppisenä kitaristina omalla triollani soittamassa Rantasipiho-telli Ruuponsaaressa Viitasaarella. Siihen aikaan ravintolamuusikko soitti 26 iltaa kuukaudessa, majoi-tus ja ruoka kuului sopimukseen.

Vapaapäivä oli aina maanantaisin, jolloin pääsi käy-mään kotona "vaihtamaan paidan".

Eräänä sunnuntaina iltapäivällä hovimestari tuli ker-tomaan että ilaulaja Henry Theel on hotellissa ja halu-aa laulaa yhden kappaleen ystävälleen säestykselläm-me. Tunsimme kyllä taitelijan nimen, olihan "Henkka" silloin vielä hyvässä laulukunnossa. Hän tuli ja löi nuotin pianistille ja sanoi että olemmeko valmiita ja kappale oli Harmaat silmät-valssi. Siitä se minulla lähti ja ohjelmistoon tuli vuosien kuluessa tämän valssin lisäksi muitakin Kärjen kappaleita.

Olen kiertänyt laulamassa yli 40 vuotta ja keikkoja on kertynyt jotakin päälle parituhatta, päätyöni tein kuitenkin Puolustusvoimissa opistoupseerina, josta hommasta jäin yliluutnanttina reserviin 2006 27 palve-lusvuoden jälkeen.

Kärjen sota-ajan tuotantoa nostettiin esille levyllä ja kiertueella 2010Varsinaisesti minulle alkoi Kärjen mittava yli 100 kappaleen rintamaoloissa sävelletty tuotanto avautua vasta myöhemmin. Kärki toimi sotiemme aikana kent-tätykistössä reserviupseerina ja sävelsi vuosina 1942-

Tenoriluutnantti Raimo Salo on erikoistunut Toivo Kärjen harvinaiseen musiikkiin1944 toistasataa kappaletta vaikeissa ja puutteellisissa oloissa ilman instrumenttia. Se lienee oamassa lajissaan maailmanennätys. Kesällä 2005 tapasin hänen poikansa Kalervo Kärjen Hämeenlinnassa, jossa olin Panssari-soittokunnan solistina Kärki-konsertissa. Kalervo kysyi olisinko kiinnostunut kuulemaan lisää Toivo-isän rin-tamalla säveltämästä musiikista. Olin silloin vielä töissä Ilmavoimissa ja vasta päästyäni eläkkeelle otin 2008 Kalervoon yhteyttä ja pyysin häneltä näytteet muuta-masta kappaleesta.

Oli maagista nähdä mestarin tuntema-ton, vuonna 1942 sävelletty Hillevi-foxi tulostumassa printteristä. Toimitin näytteet Ilmavoimien Soittokunnan johtajalle musiikkimajuri Tomi Väisäselle, joka ihas-tui tähän materiaalin heti. Päätimme aloittaa suurprojektin, joka sisälsi tupla-albumin Jatkosodassa rintamalla sävellettyä musiikkia

ja suuren konserttikiertueen Suomessa. Kärjen laajasta sota-ajan tuotannosta ja musiikkityöstä yleensäkään ei Suomessa tiedetty mitään ennen tätä On elon retki näin-suurprojektia.

Minun lisäkseni solisteina oli Toivo Kärki-laulukil-pailujen voittajia ja tangokuninkaallisia. Levy ja kier-tue onnistuivat loistavasti, salit olivat täynnä ja levy teki kauppansa.

Uutta tuntematonta musiikkia Raimo uudelle Muistojen maa-levylle Kärjen arkistoista tuntuu aina vaan löytyvän harvinai-suuksia eikä ihme, koska Toivo Kärjen ammattiura kes-ti 59 vuotta, ja sävellyksiä levytettiin hänen elinaika-naan noin 1400. Lisäksi häneltä jäi suuri määrä julkai-semattomia valmiita kappaleita, sillä hän osallistui mm. kaikkiin mahdollisiin sävellyskilpailuihin. Aineistosta on hyvä ammentaa, ja juhlalevylle nimeltä Muistojen maa tuleekin kaksi ennen julkaisematonta iskelmää; Tango Unohtumaton ilta vuodelta 1944, sanat Olavi Karu ja savottaralli Kympin suma vuodelta 1951, sanat Reino Helismaa. Lisäksi levylle tulee ensi kertaa täy-delliset versiot kappaleista Muistojen maa ja Imatran Inkeri, joten koko levy koostuu kantaesityksistä.

Tapahtumia 2015 Kärjen 100v juhlavuotenaSalo tekee 2015 aikana lehtimä-keläisen harmonikkataiteilija Heikki Jokiahon kanssa Muis-tojen maa-konsertteja Kärjen juhlavuoden kunniaksi. Kesällä 2015 he matkaavat Kanadaan esiintymään Toronton suur-juhlille ja sieltä matka jatkuu Lake Superiorin ympäri aina Thunder Bayhin saakka. Salolla on mukana myös hänen itsensä tuottama lottadoku-mentti Viimeinen testamentti, jota esitetään Toronton suurjuhlilla ja Kanadan kiertueella.

Kannattiko lähteä Kanadaan?

Elämän kiinnekohtia lännelläKYLLÄ TÄMÄ LÄNNEN kaunis helmi, Vancouver, on muuttunut siitä, miltä se

näytti 70-luvun alussa. Ensivaikutelma silloin oli, että täällä on paljon vanhoja puutaloja lähekkäin pikkutonteille sullottuina. Kaupungin liikenteen bussit olivat vihreänvalkoisia ja vanhanaikaisen pyöreitä, etuikkunat melkein samanlaiset kuin takaikkunat, puhuttiinkin ’41-ikkunaisista sedaneista’. Mutta heti alussa huomattiin, että onpa täällä tosi mahtava luonto. Mount Seymor ja muut vuoret, Iso valtameri, Stanley park, lohikalastus, isot puut, mustikoita pensaissa jne. Oli siinä ihmettele-mistä, ja kummastutti sellainenkin pikkuasia, että kodin ovi voi aueta sisäänpäin.

Suomen jälkeen väki kaduilla tuntui tosi kirjavalta, oli italialaisia, kiinalaisia ja ihan oikeita intiaanejakin. Ja sitä kielten sekasotkua. Englantia puhuttiin ihan liian no-peasti, ei siitä tahtonut saada mitään selvää. Heti alussa nähtiin paraati Hastingsilla, oli säkkipillin soittajia, ikinä ei oltu sellaista nähty, kiinalaisia värikkäissä puvuissa, paksujalkaisia hevosia ja kaikenlaista muuta ihmeellistä.

Lännelle sopeutuminen otti alussa aika koville, täytyy myöntää. Ruotsiin pesiytyi helpommin, täällä oli kaikki niin kovin erilaista. Ikäväkin riipaisi, varsinkin perheen äitiä se kouraisi eniten, silloin kuunneltiin kasettikoneelta vanhan maan lauluja. Pojat eivät niinkään kärsineet uusista oloista. Heistä oli hauskaa ajella kahdestaan bussilla ympäri kaupunkia. Ei siinä ollut mitään pelottavaa siihen aikaan.

Seurakunnalla suuri merkitysAikaisemmin tulleet kaksi velimiestä perheineen olivat ottamassa vastaan meitä

uusia maahanmuuttajia. Oli asunto ja työpaikka valmiina. Sillä oli ratkaiseva merki-tys. Mutta oli jotain muutakin, mikä helpotti kovasti. Oli suomalainen Bethel-seura-kunta, joka siihen aikaan kokoontui Balsam Streetillä kaupungin länsipuolella. Siellä on vieläkin se erikoisen muotoinen Kodukirik, eestiläisten rakentama kirkko.

Varsinainen suomalainen yhteisö aukeni eteen, kun astui kirkon ovesta sisään. Mikä lämmin vastaanotto! Heti tuli sata uutta ystävää, joista monet pyysivät ko-teihinsa, antoivat autokyytiä ja kaikenlaista apua. Kuinka saa puhelimen, missä voi maksaa laskut, mitkä tavarat kaupan hyllyissä ovat suomalaisen makuun jne. Erikoi-sesti jäi mieleen Veikko Kyllönen, joka antoi isällisiä neuvoja. Hän pureksi silmäla-siensa sankoja ja lausahti - Tämä on hyvä maa. Katkaiskaa vaan kaikki napanuorat vanhaan maahan.

Siihen aikaan Bethel-seurakunta oli 25 vuotias. Vuonna 2016 vietetään jo 70-vuo-tisjuhlia. Paljon on tällä välillä tapahtunut, uusi Kotikirkkokin Argyle Drivella on palvellut jo 32 vuotta. Pastorit ovat vaihtuneet, lapsia on syntynyt ja kasvanut ai-kuisiksi ja vanhempaa väkeä on poistunut tästä ajasta. Mutta Kotikirkon vaikutus on antanut kaikille paljon arvokkaita eväitä elämään. Uusi siirtolaisuus Suomesta on

tyrehtynyt. Se on osaltaan vaikuttanut, että seurakuntaväki alkaa olla ikääntynyttä. Samaan aikaan englannin kielinen toiminta on noussut palvelemaan kielistynyttä nuorempaa polvea. Seurakunnassa kuoro ja muusikot ovat yhä paikoillaan ja erilaiset toiminnat nuorille, lapsille ja yhteisesti kaikille. Siinä on jotain suurta ja arvokasta.

Kotikirkon tiloissa ilmestyvä suomalainen Todistaja-lehtikin on yhä voimissaan. Elämän kiinnekohtia ja työntekoa miettiessä omat kokemukset lehden toimittami-sessa on selvästi ollut se varsinainen elämäntehtävä. Muuten, nyt vuoden lopulla tämä nykyisin Outi Alopaeuksen toimittama lehti täyttää 90 vuotta. Todistaja on kertonut Jumalan armosta ja hyvistä töistä uskollisesti, ja jakanut hengen ruokaa tällä mantereella ja kautta maailman. Mikä suurenmoinen asia sekin. Raamatun mukaanhan ”Ihminen ei elä pelkästä leivästä, vaan jokaisesta sanasta, joka Jumalan suusta lähtee.”

Hyvän matkaa yli neljänkymmenen vuoden jälkeen voi todeta, että kyllä kannat-ti lähteä Kanadaan. Kokemukset lännellä, kaukana synnyinmaasta, ovat olleet sekä koettelevia että upean antoisia, ja niistä kaikista on muodostunut rikas elämä.

“Well, you’re just special. You’re American,” remarked my colleague, smirking from across the coffee table. My other Finnish cowork-ers, from the school in Helsinki where I teach, nodded in agreement. They had just finished critiquing one of my habits, and they could see that I was on the defensive.

I threw my hands up and snapped, “You’re accusing me of being too friendly? Is that really such a bad thing?” “Well, when I greet a colleague, I keep track,” she retorted, “so I don’t greet them again during the day!” Another chimed in, “That’s the same for me, too!”. Unbelievable, I thought. According to them, I’m too generous with my hellos.

When I told them I would do my best to greet them just once every day, they told me not to change my ways. They said they understood me. But the thing is, now that I’ve viewed myself from their perspective, I’m not sure I want to remain the same. Change isn’t a bad thing. And since mov-ing to Finland two years ago, I’ve kicked a few bad American habits.

1. I don’t fear awkward silencesI have yet to meet an American who doesn’t dread the awkward silence. A lull in any conversation is to be avoided at all costs—even if it means talking about the latest viral cat video or celebrity breakup.

The Finns I’ve met, on the other hand, embrace the awkward silence. They understand that it’s a part of the natural rhythm of human interaction. Sure, Finns know how to have conversations, but they’re not driven by a compulsion to fill time and space with needless chatter.

On a recent school day, as I dug into a lunch of fish sticks and steamed potatoes at the teachers’ table in the cafeteria, I was joined by a Finnish colleague. We exchanged hellos (since, you know, we hadn’t yet greeted each other that day), and then ate our meals in complete silence. We had been teaching all morning, and those fleeting moments of quiet were like a rest for our souls. After 10 minutes, I glanced up at the clock and, seeing that my next lesson was about to begin, broke the calm by saying goodbye. Even though we had just given each other “the silent treatment,” no harm was done. Quite the opposite, actually. I pushed in my chair feeling refreshed.

On the morning commute to my toddler’s daycare, the subway is often so packed that we can’t find a spot to sit. And yet it’s remarkably quiet. On the rare occasions when someone speaks—whether to bid fare-well to a friend or make a quick phone call—my son Misaiel asks me, “Why they talkin’, Dada?” He is just two years old, but he already understands the culture of comfortable silence here.

2. I don’t say things I don’t meanBefore we moved to Finland, my Finnish wife Johan-na and I would visit Helsinki for two to three weeks at a time. I enjoyed these trips, but they were always jam-packed with get-togethers with friends and fami-ly. As a result, we could only realistically see a given friend or relative once while visiting Finland.

Even though I understood our time crunch, I couldn’t keep myself from saying “I would love to meet up again” at the end of each visit.

The Americans I know are in the habit of saying things like “Come on over anytime!” or “Keep in touch!” when we know it will be difficult to follow through on such sentiments. But to refrain from using these warm words would almost seem impolite. So, on one visit to Finland, I wielded this strategy—and it backfired, leading to the following exchange with my wife:

“Tim, I just spoke with my mom. Her friend is still waiting to hear back from us. Did you really say that you wanted to meet up again? You know we don’t have the time.”

“I never said I wanted to meet up,” I explained. “I just said ‘I’d love to meet up again.’ It’s like an ex-pression.” Johanna was not satisfied with that. “Tim,” she said, “you can’t speak like that here. In Finland, people take you at your word.” Since that day, I’ve endeavored to say only what I mean.

3. I don’t leave food on my plateAfter returning to school from Christmas break this year, I found an official announcement on the white-

board of my teachers’ lounge. Its message was straightforward: “No bio waste.”

In January, my school launched an initia-tive to combat leftover food, dubbed the “Eat What You Take” campaign. The methodology: remove the school’s compost bin. Now, when a student (or teacher) clears his tray and has food on his plate, there’s nowhere to ditch it. In the cafeteria, the only available receptacle for the 450 people in my school is a small con-

tainer the size of a beach bucket, but it’s not for food. It’s only for dirty napkins.

Under this new policy, students who have food remaining on their plates have two options: take a seat and polish off the leftovers, or take a bold step into the kitchen and issue an apology to one of the lunch ladies.

I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this in the United States. But I have heard of American kids wasting a lot of school food. To take one example: In a study of Colorado elementary- and middle-school students conducted in 2010, those observed in elemen-tary school, in the authors’ words, “wasted more than a third of grain, fruit and vegetable menu items.”

As for me, I learned my lesson last year when my sixth-graders caught me throwing away nearly half a plate of food. I had severely miscalculated, taking too much food without having enough time to stomach it all. Walking back to our classroom, I knew I’d need to make a slight change to my lesson plan. I’d start with a public apology.

4. I don’t take coffee to goAmericans have a reputation for doing things on the

go: breakfast in the car, lunch at a desk while catching up on email and, of course, coffee on the run. “Amer-ica runs on Dunkin’,” right?

In Finland, my experience is that people are more likely to slow down when they drink coffee. They sit. They sip leisurely. I often catch them staring into space. It’s no surprise then that Finns consume nearly twice as much coffee as Americans.

And now I’ve become one of those coffee-drinking space cadets. But recently, I had an American relapse. I needed to rush out of the apartment, and I didn’t have time to sit down for a cup of coffee.

Frantically, I rummaged through the shelf that held our cups. Eventually, I found one silver to-go mug, but the cover was warped. And when I poured the coffee in, the bottom of the mug started to hiss and form tiny bubbles.

I shouted gruffly to my wife, “Why don’t we have one decent thermos in this house?”

Johanna snapped back, “Because we live in Europe. And Europeans don’t take coffee to go!”

5. I don’t feel uncomfortable in my own skin

In the land of 3.3 million saunas, it is inevitable that you will eventually find yourself naked with people you don’t know—and not care in the slightest.

I didn’t realize that I had reached this level of Fin-nishness until this fall. A close friend from New York was visiting, and I insisted that on his last night in Finland he join me for a trip to one of the city’s pub-lic saunas. I was convinced that he would fall in love with this Finnish pastime, but I was wrong. Very wrong.

I explained that Finns go naked into saunas, but there are separate ones for men and women. The activity of taking a sauna is not, in any way, sexual. When we were in the changing room, I smiled and remarked to my friend, “This is where we leave the towels, man.” He was not amused. Clutching his towel around his waist, he growled, “No way.”

Unfazed, I hung up my own towel and strolled into the sauna Finnish-style. I found a spot on the top plat-form along with another naked man. A few moments later, my American buddy timidly opened the door and located a spot on the lowest bench, still gripping his towel as if his life (or manhood) depended on it.

He lasted about three minutes before declaring “enough” to me and the other naked strangers in the dimly lit room. I couldn’t help but laugh. I stayed seated—in silence, of course.

FINNFUN SCHOOL’S 2014-2015 school year started on September 9th, 2014 and it will end on May

30th, 2015.Board members elected at the AGM in September

are: Selja Nyberg (Chair), Karoliina Kotanen (Secretary), Tonya Raworth (Treasurer), Edna Alle, Anne Bruinn, Johanna Mantsinen, Mia Atkins and Tuomo Neuvonen.

Our teachers in children’s classes are Anne Tuppu-rainen, Mirka Nyppeli, Annina Kovanen (until Febru-ary 21) and Katrina Sutela (starting February 21) and assistant teachers Heidi and Rachel Tauriainen and Ella Helin. Adult class teachers are Tuomo Neuvonen and Riitta Kutvonen.

We are also lucky to have Taimi Ahonen as a vol-unteer helping out with classes as well as high school students Jonatan Yli-Hietanen and Bea Lumme volun-teering with us.

Children’s ClassesThis school year FinnFun has 22 students. Classes are held Tuesday evenings 6-8pm and Saturday mornings 10am-12pm approximately twice a week. Tuesday’s classes are for children who are native speakers or do understand and speak Finnish. Saturday’s classes are for those children who learn Finnish from beginning or have some knowledge of Finnish.

There are two classes on Tuesdays with 15 students enrolled and one class on Saturdays with 7 students.

Adults’ classesIn the fall there were two courses: Beginner and Non-beginner. Both courses met 10 times, two hours at a time. Beginner class had 15 and Non-beginner 10 stu-dents. In the spring there are again the same courses, and they are same length. All courses are taught by Tuomo Neuvonen.

Adult conversation classes are continuing as well and feedback has been good. There were 6 classes held during the fall and 7-8 classes are planned for the spring semester. Each class is 2 hours long.

The conversation class is meant for (a) fairly ad-vanced non-native speakers of Finnish who want to maintain their speaking skills and (b) speakers of Finnish who want to bring their speaking skills up-to-date. Focus is on every-day practical speaking skills. Teacher is Riitta Kutvonen.

School events• Scandinavian Craft Fair, November 23, 2014.

FinnFun School sold joulutorttus and tonttulakkis. The raffle with 10 gift baskets was a huge success again.

• Christmas Party, December 7, 2014 at the Finnish Manor. Children performed, Joulupukki visited and there was pot luck at the end.

• Lumileikkipäivä/Snow Fun Day, March 14, 2015. VFC Sports Club is organizing this event with FinnFun. Plans are on hold, due to lack of snow. Alternatives are being considered.

• There will be no Family Camp this year. Resour-ces are being used towards a children’s concert to celebrate FinnFun’s 30th Anniversary. Satu Sopanen and Tuttiorkesteri from Finland will be coming to entertain. Concert will be held at the Manor on November 14, 2015. Concert is free and open to the entire Finnish Community.

• At the Midsummer Festival in June FinnFun is planning to host the craft table at the Finland tent.

FinnFun School does get funding from the Finnish Ministry of Education and in addition from Vancouver Finlandia Club. FinnFun would like to thank VFC for their continuing support.

The vintage corner drew a lot of attention with special items. SCANDIAVIAN CULTURAL SOCIETY järjesti mukavan musikaallisen iltapäivän Scandinavian Centre:llä. Juh-lasali täyttyi yleisöstä johon varmaan vaikutti aurinkoinen ja keväinen päivä tulla kuuntelemaan musiikkia ja

katsomaan ’Poulsbo’ Norjalaista nuorten kansantanhua vierailula Washington osavaltiosta. Carolyn Thauberger toivotti yleisön ja esiintyjät tervetulleeksi.

Kyosti Sutela aloitti rakkauslauluilla ”Kotkan poikii ilman siipii, Iltatuulen viesti ja Kullan murunen”, Hannu Lambertin säestäessä. Hannu soitti taiturimaisesti Merikannon 1917 säveltämän “Kesäillan valssin” ja antoi todella kipakan alun tanhuajille soittaessaan ”Säkkijärven polkan”. Niinpä kun tanhuajien vetäjä esitteli heidät, hän ker-toi, että ryhmässä on 25 henkeä, mukaan pääsi tulemaan noin puolet heistä ja mikä on heillä erikoista poikia on enemmän kuin tyttöjä. Huilun ja viulun tahdissa tulivat mm. Viiving tanssi, Swedish action tanssi, tyttöjen

Tikkutanssi, Nuuskapolkka, poikien Hattutanssi jne. Oli todella mahtavan vauhdikasta vauhtia ja rytmiä. Kannattaa mennä katsomaan ja kuulemaan heidän esiintymisiä.

ideoimassa oli myös paikallinen muusikko-toimittaja Perttu Hemminki, joka sittemmin kirjoittikin teoksen sanat tutkittuaan aihetta ensin reilun vuoden ajan niin Suomessa kuin matkustellen ympäri Yhdysvaltojakin siirtolaisten tarinoita keräämässä. Teoksen toisena sanoittajana on toiminut Dr. Helander.

Kaksikko lähti ilomielin mukaan ja teos saikin kantaesityksensä Rytmiraidefestivaaleilla elokuussa 2012 –kielen ollessa tuolloin vielä fingelskaa ja englantia.

Terveellinen äidinmaito!

ÄIDINMAIDOSTA on löydetty erittäin tärkeä aine, joka heikentää superbakteerien vastustuskykyä

antibiooteille. Kysymys on Hamlet-nimisestä proteiinista, jonka on jo havaittu myös tuhoavan erilasia syöpäsoluja. Asiasta kertoo Ruotsin Local-julkaisu.

Äidinmaidon Hamlet-proteiini (Hamlet tulee sanosista "Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made Lethal to Tumor Cells") näyttäisi purevan muuten hyvin vastustuskykyisiin bakteereihin, joihin antibiootit eivät tepsi. Hamlet muuttaa bakteereita siten, että niistä tulee herkkiä antibiooteille, kertoo Lundin yliopiston tutkimus.

Osa bakteereista on muuttunut immuuneiksi antibiooteille eikä niitä pystytä nujertamaan nykyisillä antibiooteilla. Tällaisia ovat muun muassa vastustuskykyisimmät sairaalabakteerit.

Uudesta aineesta toivotaan ratkaisua uusien antibioottien kehittämiseen, professori Anders Håkansson Lundin yliopistosta kertoo Localissa.

"Synnynnäistä kroonista keuhkosairautta sairastavat lapset usein kuolevat, sillä heillä saattaa olla antibiooteille niin vastustuskykyisiä bakteerikantoja, ettei meillä ole heille lääkettä." Uusi lääke saattaisi auttaa heitä, Håkansson uskoo.

VFC:n puheenjohtajan raportti

TÄNÄ ENSIMMÄISENÄ kautenani Vancouverin Finlandia Clubin puheenjohtajana olemme jatka-

neet aiempien vuosien ajattelua kehittäessämme uusia ideoita Klubin tulevaisuudelle.

Enimmät johtokunnan jäsenet uskovat Klubin olevan päämääräisesti sosiaalinen seura, ja vaikka me aika ajoin osallistumme projekteihin (kuten Suomen rintamalta Kanadan länsirannikolle-elokuvan ja -kirjan tuotantoon) ja julkaisemme Länsirannikon Uutiset-lehteä, suurin osa Klubin parissa vietetystä ajasta liittyy viihteeseen ja seuranviet-toon. Monet seuran jäsenet uskovat, että on tärkeää säilyttää VFC:n aktiviteettien suomalaisuus. Seuran toiminnat, jotka ovat tehokkaimmin houkutelleet uusia jäseniä, ovat olleet viihde ja urheilu.

Runsaiden keskustelujen tuloksena, sekä johtokunnan kokouksissa että pienem-missä ryhmissä, Klubi on päättänyt että KISS-toimintaperiaatteen (”Keep It Simple, Suomalaiset”, tai ”Yksinkertainen on pa-rasta, suomalaiset”) seuraaminen toimii seurallemme parhaiten. Tämän periaatteen mukaan VFC:n Klubi-illat on vähennetty minimiin: Taiteiden Yö, Oktoberfest, Finland House Societyn sekä Paukku ja Koukun vuoden 2015 varainhankintailtojen tukeminen, ja suomalaisherkkujen kuten salmiakin ja suklaan myynti kioskilla.

Vuoden 2014 johtokunta päätti myös ottaa vastuul-leen Scandinavian Craft Salen ylläpidon Purpureilta, jotka ovat hyvin menestyksekkäästi järjestäneet tilai-suuden monen vuoden ajan. VFC:n Urheiluklubi on edelleen ollut positiivisen mediahuomioinnin kohteena, varsinkin Juhannusjuhlien akankantokilpailun tiimoilla.

Vuonna 2014 (ja 2013) aloitimme yhteistyötä, jonka tavoite on keskittyä nuorempaan yleisöön: 1. Splendub ja Skandinavian Juhannusjuhlat – ‘Ember

Skies’ on ollut hyvin suosittu, houkutellen SFU:n opiskelijoita ja paljon 24–34-vuotiaita osallistujia.

2. VFC ja Live Nation – kilpailuja suomalaisista metal-limusiikkikonserttilipuista, joka toistetaan jälleen toukokuun 2015 Korpiklaanin konserttiin.

3. Facebook on tuonut lisää huomiota: VFC:lla on 126 seuraajaa ja Länsirannikon Uutiset-lehdellä 195, joka osoittaa 25%:n kasvua molemmilla sivuilla.

Miten toimintamme on onnistunut? Katsotaanpa nu-meroita … seitsemässä vuodessa, 2006–2013, menetimme melkein 150 jäsentä. Suurin osa menetyksistä johtuu jäsenten poismenosta, mutta on myös monia jotka eivät uusineet jäsenyyttään. Vuonna 2014 jäsenmäärä nousi ensimmäisen kerran 22 uudella jäsenellä. Suurin osa näistä on vuosittaisia jäsenyyksiä, yksi opiskelija- ja kolme eliaikaisjäsenyyttä. Tämä on hyvä kehityssuunta, jota haluamme jatkaa.

Siirtyessämme vuoteen 2015 aiomme keskittyä jäsen-määrän nostoon. Ehdotamme tänään uutta jäsenyys-luokkaa, yritysjäsenyyttä 250 dollarilla vuodessa. Tähän liittyen aiomme käynnistää VFC:n jäsenetuohjelman suomalaisten kauppiaiden ja yritysten kanssa, johon kuuluvat edullisemmat ilmoitushinnat Länsirannikon Uutiset-lehdessä ja jäsenalennukset. Lisaksi VFC:n jä-senetuohjelma tulee tarjoamaan muita etuja, kuten 50%:n alennuksen klubi-iltoihin sekä kilpailuja ja kylki-äisiä. Uusi johtokunta tulee kehittämään tämän ohjel-man, ja olen innokas näkemään sen kehityksen.

Ensimmäisen VFC:n puheenjohtajakauteni lopussa haluan kiittää johtokunnan jäseniä vuodesta 2014. Vuosi 2015 tuonee vain lisää hauskuutta!

VFC President's Report

THIS YEAR, as my first term as Chair, we continued the thinking of previous years to

develop new ideas for the future of Vancouver Finlandia Club.

Most of us feel that the VFC is primarily a social club, and while we do get involved in projects (such as Suomen rintamalta Kanadan länsirannikolle) and publish Länsirannikon Uutiset, when we want to

spend time with the club it is mostly for entertainment and rapport. Many mem-bers feel it is still important to maintain ‘Finnishness’ in VFC’s activities, and we found that the two activity sets that are our most effective outreach vehicles for attracting new members are Entertain-ment and Sports.

After much discussion, both at Board meetings and in smaller groups, as a club we decided that the ‘KISS’ principle ("Keep It Simple, Suomalaiset") would work best for the Club. Therefore, we distilled VFC’s Club Nights to the basics: an arts night, Oktoberfest, and support

for Finland House Society’s and Paukku & Koukku’s fundraising evenings in 2015, as well as hosting a kiosk that sold Finnish goodies such as salmiakki and chocolate.

Also, decided upon in 2014 by the Board, VFC will continue Purpurit’s very successful Scandinavian Craft Sale this coming November. VFC Sports Club continues to receive positive media attention for its wife carrying contest at the Midsummer Festival.

In 2014 (and 2013), we also initiated collaborations with a focus on younger audiences:1. Splendub and the Scandinavian Midsummer Festi-

val – ‘Ember Skies’ has proven to be very popular, attracting students from SFU and a strong 24 to 34 age group.

2. VFC and Live Nation – for Finnish heavy metal concert ticket giveaway contests, which has been renewed again for 2015 with Korpiklaani in May.

3. Facebook has also helped with exposure, with VFC having 126 followers and 195 for West Coast News, a 25% increase for both pages.

So, has it all worked? Let’s look at the numbers… in seven years, from 2006 to 2013, we lost almost 150 members. While much of the ‘loss’ was due to our members passing away, there was still a good num-ber of people who just didn’t renew. Today, we have the first increase since this time: 22 new members in 2014. Most of these are annual memberships, with one more student and three more life members. This is a good trend, and one to continue.

As we move forward into 2015, membership is our key focus. With a new membership class being pro-posed today — a Corporate Member for $250 year — we plan to launch a VFC Member Rewards Program with Finnish-based retailers and busineses, which inlcudes a special advertising promotion in the West Coast News and discounts for members. Further, the VFC Member Rewards Program will include other percs, such as 50% off admission at VFC Club Nights and exclusive contests and giveaways. Our new Board will be the authors of this program, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

As we end my first year as chair of the VFC, I would like to thank the Board members for the year 2014 and I look forward to more fun in 2015!

VFC Sports Annual Report

IT WAS A GOOD YEAR for VFC Sports. We held our annual events at

the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival - The Paavo Nurmi Run and the The Wife Carrying Contest. With the continued support of VFC, Lindome Structures, and Nesters Market both events were quite successful.

We also held three ice skating events – one in March and two in the win-ter (Thanksgiving and Box-ing Day) that were open to everyone, as well as a couple hikes in the sum-mer.

Unfortunately, the Lu-mileikkipäivä - Snow Fun Day at Cypress Mountain/Hollyburn Ski Area which was planned for March 14 has been cancelled this year due to lack of snow on the local mountains.

In 2015, VFC Sports will be working closely with the ScanSports Committee to bring a wider variety of sports and activities to the Scandinavian Centre. So far there is a Scandinav-ian Centre SunRun team (everyone is welcome!) and Sunday morning runs at Burnaby Lake.

VFC Sports & Scansports could use more people with enthusiasm and ideas to help bring more sports and activities to the VFC and Scandinavian Centre in general. Our numbers have dropped to just a few people, and we could use some fresh minds to revital-ize the club. Please contact me if you are interested (or know someone who is interested) in helping out.

Kirjaston vuosiraportti

KIRJASTOLLA OLI JÄLLEEN hyvä vuosi. Kirjoja hankittiin pitkin vuotta melkein koko

määräahalla eli noin $2.600 dollarilla. Kuten aina ennekin, kirjaston ystävät ovat tuo-neet kirjat Suomesta, joten postikuluihin ei ole käytetty yhtään rahaa. Suomi-Seuralta saatiin jälleen 20 valitsemaamme uutta kirjaa lahjoituksena.

Kiitokset Marja Hammondille, joka on järjes-tänyt ja päällystänyt kirjoja. Päällystetyt kirjat kestävät paljon pitempään kuin päällystämättömät.

Haluan kiittää klubia tuesta kirjastolle. Kirjaston kirjoja luetaan ja lainataan paljon.

THE LIBRARY has had another good year. We kept buying books all year and spent just under budget

at $2,600. As always, friends of the library brought books in their suitcases from Finland, so no money was spent on shipping. We also got 20 new books, chosen by us, donated by The Finland Society.

I would like to thank Marja Hammond for volunteering to organize and cover the books. Books

with covers look much nicer and last much longer.I would also like to thank the club for its continued

support of the library. The library has very many very happy readers, who visit the library often, and take out several books at a time.

FIRST I’D LIKE say thank you all of our readers — you have been great with all ‘thank yous’, and of course

what we should do with WCN to get even better and more interesting.

I’d like to get right to the point with both sad and good news. For many, 2014 was the kind of year that not many of us liked. WCN did have its ups and downs: our little mailing group lost two great friends with sudden sicknesses. Mrs Aini Butler passed away in August, and Mrs Eeva Miinalainen in January... we miss their conversation and good laughs....

All of us could not believe when we heard the first news that Marita Kareinen will finish all her work at the SCCS, which included her one of a hundred jobs as Vancouver Finlandia Club’s Membership Secretary, for which she looked after our address labels. Our joint effort was great... thank you, Marita... we wish you an exciting new journey and all the best in Finland.

Our budget last year has gone up; the reasons are due to postal rates (in March) and printing costs (August).

Usually, WCN has 16 pages, except the Christmas issue at 24 pages, although part of this issue was paid from your generous Christmas greetings... we’re happy to report that we received $1,380.00 — plus donations! thank you to all of you!

VUOSI 2014 oli osastomme kannalta erittäin toimin-tarikas. Osastomme vuosikokous oli Helmikuun 12.

Päivänä. Kokouksen alussa pidettiin hiljainen hetki kai-kille jotka olivat vuoden aikana saanet kutsun ”Viimei-seen Iltahuutoon”. Yhdistykselle valittiin toimihenkilöt kaudelle 2014 – 2015, seuraavasti:

ja Esko valmistivat aamiaisen Scandinavian Centerin kevätsiivouksen vapaaehtoisille. Suomen Sotaveteraanit nauttivat arvonantoa ja kunnioitusta kaikkien pohjois-maitten taholta, jotka toimivat Scandinavian Centterillä.

Kesäkuun 4 päivä – Esko kävi asettamassa kukka-laitteen Marsalkka Mannerheimin haudalle Helsingin Hietaniemen Hautausamaalla.

Kesäkuun 10-12 päivä - Petteri ja Esko ottivat osaa Suomen Soataveteraaniliiton Liittopäville Oulussa. Siellä Edellinen Liiton puheenjohtaja, Arno Strömmer lähetti lämpimät terveiset Osastollemme ja erityisesti Korsu-kuorolle jotka kaikki ovat osastomme tukijäseniä.

Elokuun 13 päivä – Osaston Picnic ja hernekeittoa kenttäkeittiöstä. Hernekeitto onnistui odotusten mukai-sesti.

Syyskuun 21 päivä – Jatkosodan Päättymispäivän 70-vuotis Juhla. Reijo Viitala, Kanadan Piirin Puheen-johtaja oli juhlapuhujana. Reijo myös oli kovasti iloinen todetessaan osastomme ripeää veteraanitoimintaa.

Marraskuun 18 päivä – Veteraanit (Petteri, Pauli ja Esko) valmistivat aamiaisen Centterin Tiistai porukalle. Chili maistui jokaiselle läsnäolijalle.

Suomen Itsenäisyyspäivän juhlaan osastomme sai Veteraaneille 6 lippua jotka lahjoitti Finland House Society. Kiitos heille.

Joulukuun 7 päivä – Emmaus Kirkolla pidettyyn Itse-näisyyspäivän juhlaan osastomme toimitti liput, Lippu-vartion ja seppeleen Seppelevartiolle.

Joulukuun 10 päivä - Osaston Joulujuhla Centterillä. Marita Kareinen ja kumppanit olivat valmistaneet mah-tavan kalkkuna lounaan. Ohjelmassa oli myös Jouluru-noja ja Joulumusiikkia. Musiikista vastasi Korsukuoro.

Veteraanien, heidän vaimojen, leskien ja lottien kun-toutus meidän kahdella lepokodilla on jatkunut muu-tamia taukoja lukuunottamatta. Kuntoutuksesta vastaa ammattitaitoinen Fysioterapeutti Jussi Lehtoranta.

Hallitus on kiitollinen siitä luottamuksesta jota olem-me saaneet nauttia sekä tukijäseniltä että Veteraaneilta.

Purpurit Report

THROUGHOUT 2014 Purpurit members have con-tinued to practice at 7:00 on Tuesday evenings

at the Scandinavian Community Centre. Practices take place from January to December with a break during July and August. Our dance instructor this year has been Riitta Huttunen, along with help from Helena Rutkowski. The group continues to learn new dances while also practicing and performing previously learned dances.

There were 22 paid members for the year 2014, with an average of 4 – 6 couples actively participating in regular dance practices. In 2014 Purpurit performed for the Kalevala

Celebration and the Spring Festival at the Finnish Manor, along with the annual Midsum-mer Festival the Scandinavian Centre. Purpurit was honoured to perform for Erkki and Linda Saari’s 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration in November. All members of the group were involved in the St. Urho Club Night in March and the Scandinavian Craft Fair in November. This one day craft fair is the group’s primary source of fund raising, is well known in Bur-naby, and draws large crowds to the centre.

Due to multiple health issues, not all members of Purpurit are still able to participate in active dance practices and performances, however everyone participates in the groups social and fund raising events. All 22 members of Purpurit were on hand for work at the annual Scandinavian Craft Fair in November. Purpurit greatly appreciated help from Karina Ramsay and Daniel Linder who spent the Saturday before the craft fair helping us make Karel-ian piirakkaas.

The increase in health problems for many mem-bers during 2014 has necessitated the need for Pur-purit to withdraw from Club Night responsibilities and to discontinue the organization of, and active participation in, future Scandinavian Craft Fairs. We are grateful to the Vancouver Finlandia Club for agreeing to undertake the organization of future Scandinavian Craft Fairs. Although some features of the craft fair may change, this popular craft fair will continue.

All Purpurit members help to support the Scandi-navian Centre and Vancouver Finlandia Club (VFC) events, and some members are active on the VFC Board of Directors. As required as a sub-group of VFC, Purpurit held its annual general meeting on February 3, 2015. The group elected Erkki Saari as President, and Reta Staley agreed to continue as the Purpurit representative to VFC. Purpurit’s financial records for 2014 were audited in January 2015 by VFC designated auditors.

Purpurit gratefully acknowledges the continued fi-nancial support from the Vancouver Finlandia Club.
