MANILA -- Govern-ment workers used a back-hoe and an incineratorFriday to crush and burnmore than ve tons osmuggled elephant tusksworth an estimated $10million (P430 million)in the biggest known de-struction o tracked ivo-

ry outside Arica.Te government saidthe destruction o thestockpile, gathered romseizures since 2009, dem-onstrates its commitmentto ghting the illegal ivorytrade.

It also eliminates anyopportunity or corruptocials to resell the ivory,as was the case in 2006when the largest singleshipment o 3.7 tones van-ished rom the inventory, according to an interna-

tional network that tracksthe illegal trade.

Ivory is known to havedisappeared rom a numbero government-held stock-piles worldwide, so it is vi-tal that proper protocols areestablished, said ColmanO Criodain rom the WorldWide Fund or Nature.

It willalso help to dismantle crim-inal syndicates responsibleor poaching in Arica.

Tis not only sends amessage to wildlie track-

ers that the Philippine gov-ernment is taking rm ac-tion against the illegal ivorytrade, but also takes a standagainst corruption by burn-ing their ivory stockpile soit cannot be stolen then soldinto the black market, saidSteven Galster, director oBangkok-based Freeland

    Foundation.Te Southeast Asian na-

tion has been used as a transitroute between Arica and therest o Asia. Ivory can etch upto $2,000 per kilogram ($910per pound) on the black mar-ket and more than $50,000or an entire tusk.

Te Elephant rade In-ormation System, whichtracks the illegal trade onbehal o the 1989 Conven-tion on International radein Endangered Species, saidthe Philippines is among

nine countries and terri-tories identied as being

most heavily implicated inthe illegal trade. Te othersare Kenya, anzania, SouthArica, Malaysia, Vietnam,Hong Kong, China andTailand.

Te Philippines is a tran-sit point but also is knownor its carving industry pro-ducing religious sculptures

    NBA Champion again. A

    Game 6 comeback when it

appeared to be over and a

    strong Game 7 victory over

an equally strong team ce-mented a place for Miami

    among NBAs great teams

in the company of LA Lak-

    ers, Boston Celtics and the

    San Antonio Spurs.

    The Heat ran off with

    its 2nd straight NBA cham-

    pionship series. It became

    the NBAs first repeat

    champion since the Lakers

    The Miami Heat

    in 2009-2010 and the first

team to beat the Spurs in the

    NBA finals.

    The San Antonio Spurs

    will always remember its a

title they let slip away. The Heat finally re-

    pelled the tenacious San

    Antonio Spurs, 95-88 and

    clinched their 2nd straight

    NBA championship.

    Miami made it difficult

for San Antonio to hit the

    outside shots. They chal-

    lenged almost every shot

    forcing Danny Green and

Leonard to put the ball on

the floor and face their Mi-

    ami defenders.

    After their remarkable

come back in Game 6, Mi-

    amis confidence was so

    high. They knew that the

    overtime loss of the Spurs

    would drain them. This

    was where homecourt ad-

    vantage made all the dif-

    ference. But the victory of

    Miami redound to excellent

    teamwork of all the players

    especially Lebron James,

    Dwayne Wade, Chrish

    Bosh, Ray Allen and ShaneBattier.

    Congratulations also

    to the Miami Coach, Eric

    Spoelstra, the Fil-Am pride

    of the Filipinos for bringing

    honor to the Filipino people

    through his infinite pursuit

    of excellence for winning

    his 2nd NBA championship

Solemnity of the Birth of John the Baptist

    Is 49:1-6; Ps 139; Acts 13:22-26; Lk 1:57-66,80

    BIRTH OF JOHN

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave

birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had

shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When

they came on the eight day to circumcise the child, they were going

to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply

No. He will be called John. But they answered her, There is no

one among your relatives who has this name. So they made signs,

asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tab-

let and wrote, John is his name, and all were amazed. Immediately

his mouth was opened, and his tongue freed, and he spoke blessingGod. Then fear came upon all their neighbors, all these matters were

discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard these

things took them to heart saying What, then, will this child be? For

surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became

strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifesta-

    tion to Israel.

    BIRTH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST

The greatness of John can be seen in the announcement of his birth

and the event itself, similar to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus.

John attracted countless people to the banks of the Jordan and some

people thought he was the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Je-

sus, even to the point of sending away some of his followers to become

the first disciples of Jesus. John the Baptist spoke for those who were

suffering. He pointed out the faults, especially of those in power, those

who were in a position to improve and alter things. So genuine was the

man that people went to him in crowds. When they listened they were

cut to the heart. They went down into the Jordan to be cleansed of theirsins and to renew their lives in this world. The Lord himself joined

them and was baptized. John called the people to justice as the basic

foundation for good and peaceful world. The voices of many modern

day followers of John the Baptist call out today. News reporters and

aid workers continue the work of the Baptist, calling us to turn our

hearts in compassion towards each other. (His Word is Life by Vima

Dasan, S.J., published by Paulines. Visit us at www.paulines.ph or at

Paulines Media Center, Real St., Tacloban City, Tel. #321-31-95)

Sowers Thought: Just as after holy Communion Jesus is really

present in our souls in body, blood, soul, and divinity, so in his Truth

he is really with him who carries his Holy Gospel. (Blessed James

Alberione, SSP, STD, Founder of the Pauline Family)

    AsidePAUL JAMES ANCAO

I keep meeting a lot of

    acquaintances that are ei-

    ther, unemployed or under-

    employed.

    Once I met a childhood

    friend who graduated in

    college and is now working

for a famous clothing line.Ive learned from our con-

    versation that his co-work-

    ers are undergrads. Instead

    of lamenting, he went for

    the easy-go-lucky remark:

    Cge la nabubuhi man gihap.

I further learned that he re-

    signed from a previous job,

    which had a better compen-

    sation package, because he

    did not like his uniform.

    What a lousy excuse.

Ive known a lot of high

    school batch mates who

    spent fat matriculations

in college. Some of themlavishly spent for more

    than what was required (as

    flaunted in social network-

    ing sites). I come across

    them only to learn how

    much they are enduring the

    volunteer and contractual

life of a laborer. The beer-

    and-skittles of their life,

    perhaps, came in first and

    had been exhausted in col-

    lege, compromising prac-

    ticality and wisdom over

    trend and social receipt.

    People across the coun-

try keep on complainingon how little employment

there is for a bulky group of

    graduates. Year after year

    universities and schools let

    their students out theoreti-

    cally groomed up and ready

for what the real world of-

    fers. To stiffen the compe-

    tition, previous graduates

    who have failed to find

    employment, squeeze in

    with the freshies. The gov-

    ernment is addressing the

    problem by broadening the

    list of jobs through overseas

involvement. Pointless tosay, its obviously not ad-

    equate.

    However, I feel we are

    biased. We actually have

    jobs. We actually have

    places to generate revenue.

    We have been unidirection-

al all this time and we have

    been casting our stones to

    We deserve our stones

    our authorities only. For a

    fact, we also deserve our

    stones.

    We need to acquire per-

    severance and satisfaction

and we need a nudge in

the rear when we make our

    choices. The opportunity

is in plain sight but we re-

fuse to grab it because we

    choose to go for something

    which can fuel our wants.

    More often than not, some

    choose to dwell with the

    sex, drugs and rock and

    roll lifestyle rather than

    to put all potentials into

good use. Some do not go

    for their dreams; they go

    for what their wallets can

    materialize and what oth-

    ers dream and accept about

    them. The administration

has lapses; and yes the edu-

    cational system can address

    to page 7

    There must be a clean-

up of our party- list sys-

tem and it should be done

    sooner. Such move would

    eliminate groups that are

    unnecessary and are only

    there to take advantage of

    the loopholes of the po-

    litical-electoral system in

    the country. Paramount

consideration is to preventfamilies and clans from

    entering into the system

    where other members are

    already entrench as district

    representatives. So much

    for redundant positions and

    waste of funds.

    It will be noted that

    before the 2013 election,

there was clamor by no less

    than COMELEC Chairman

    Sixto Brillantes to consider

    removing certain groups

    that do not represent mar-

    ginalized sectors. It was

noted that numerous par-ty- list groups do not actu-

    ally represent basic sectors,

    those that remain voiceless

in our society. One of these

    party -lists that became

    controversial recently due

    to what happened to its

    first nominee, Jude Acidre,

    SC must reconsider its ruling

    on party-list system

is the An Waray party -list.

    Congressman Bem Noel

    finished his three terms,

    only to be succeeded by

his sister if the results of

    the elections would war-

    rant. There are other party-

    lists that are represented

    by families and political

    parties whose members are

already district representa-tives. It is one ploy of po-

    litical families to perpetuate

    themselves in power. Ugly

as it may seem, it is as if

    these families have found

    means to expand their op-

    portunities to be in power.

    Clearly, political families

find ways to run and get

    elected in various positions

all at the same time which a

    UP social scientist terms as

    horizontal dynasties.

    The party- list system

    has to undergo a transpar-

ent and honest cleaningoperation. Only legitimate

    groups that really represent

the basic sectors must be al-

    lowed to register as party

    list. Even the membership

    of the organizations espe-

cially those that are listed as

    nominees (who would later

    represent the group as Party

    list Representative) must un-

    dergo scrutiny. Hiding in the

    structure are family members

who are not the right person-

    alities to represent the sector.

Most of them are related byblood or affinity. If found to

    be relatives of sitting repre-

    sentatives, these clan mem-

bers who are under the guise

    of party list nominees must

be prohibited or the party list

    group they represent must

    be disqualified. Clearly, as

    members of political clans or

    political parties they are not

    marginalized and cannot rep-

    resent a marginalized group.

    The worst scenario is

    the possibility that the par-

    ty- list system evolved as

need or scapegoat of po-litical wannabes that are

too weak to run right away

    as district representatives.

    Or, they could be deriva-

    tives of political parties.

    They could have been orga-

    nized to become machinery

    groups of those running in

    the presidential elections in

    2016 and beyond. They use

    these groups for financing

    and campaigns.

    The Supreme Court

    decision prior to the May

    13 elections that ruled that

    non-marginalized groupsand political parties can

    take part in party-list elec-

    tions must be reconsid-

    ered. It is complicating

    the political system in the

    country. It is being used

    as vehicle for circumvent-

    ing the law.

of the said TCT No. T-52133

    is hereto attached as ANNEX

    D;

    7. That Florentina Basia-

no acquired the lot from her

    father, the late Luis Basiano,

    through donation as evi-

denced by a Deed of Donation

    dated Oct. 26, 1998, a copy of

    which is hereto attached as

    ANNEX E;

    8. That shortly after Flo-

    rentina Basiano was able to

obtain a title over the property, defendant Angelina Esperas

    Garcia caused the registration

    of an AFFIDAVIT OF AD-

    VERSE CLAIM dated Oct. 2,

    2000 over TCT No. T-52133

    and said defendant claims that

    she has hereditary rights over

the property covered by it, a

copy of said Affidavit of Ad-

    verse Claim is hereto atatched

    as ANNEX F;

    9. That the said adverse

claim was then carried over to

    defendants title, under Entry

    No. 2011000614 dated Feb.

25, 2011 and it now operates

    to harass him and prevents

    him from using the property

in loaning purposes as well as

in putting up a viable business

    project thereon, to his detri-

ment and prejudice;10. That the claim of said

    defendant is baseless and un-

    founded, the fact being that

she is not in anyway related to

    the late spouses Mariano Ba-

    siano and Rogelia Pretencio,

    predecessors-in-interest of the

late Luis Basiano, in regard to

    my above-described property;

as in fact, the latter, per his

    documents properly registered

    before the defendant Registry

of Deeds of Tacloban City was

the true and legal direct heir of

    said spouses;

    11. That additionally, said

    Adverse Claim is infirm and

    should not have deserved reg-

istration with the office of de-

fendant Register of Deeds asdefendant did not allege any

    muniments of title and neither

did she present proof of her

    being an heir;

    12. That clear proof of

    said adverse claim being one

    designed to harass plaintiff

    or whosoever may own the

property is the fact that de-

    fendant Garcia has not filed

    any complaint before a court

of law to enforce her alleged

    hereditary rights even up to

    this time;

    13. That a continued an-

    notation of said adverse claim

of defendant Garcia on the ti-

tle of plaintiff albeit the same

    is baseless and unfounded cer-

tainly works to the great detri-

ment and prejudice of plain-tiff; hence, the same must be

    cancelled and rendered of no

    further legal force and effect.

    14. That because of the

    baseless and whimsical act

    of filing said adverse claim

    by defendant Garcia, plaintiff

    was compelled to hire services

of counsel for which he spent

    P20,000.00 as Acceptance Fee

and shall spend the sum of

    P1,500.00 as per Court Ap-

    pearance Fee.

    WHEREFORE, premises

    considered, it is most respect-

    fully prayed of this Honorable

Court that an Order be issued

    directing defendant Register

of Deeds of Tacloban City to

    CANCEL and RENDER of no

    further legal force and effect

    the Adverse Claim annotated

    under Entry No. 2011000614

at the back of Transfer Cer-

    tificate of Title No. 122-

    2011000326 registered in the

    name of plaintiff.

    Further, it is prayed that

    defendant Angelina Esperas

Garcia joined by her spouse be

    ordered to re-imburse plaintiff

of the sum of P20,000.00 by

way of Attorneys Fees as well

    as all expenses plaintiff shall

    have paid as Appearance Fees

as may be shown in evidence.

    Plaintiff further prays for

    such other relief and remedy

    available in the premises.
