Teaching and Research

LPU is a globally connected University, working with the top universities across the world to provide a truly global experience to the students. Partnerships

between universities allow researchers from different institutions to access knowledge, equipment, and expertise that may not be available at their home institutions and multi-organization research groups can access a wider array of funding opportunities. Similarly, in order to provide intellectual environment to the students’ University partners with different government and non-governmental bodies. Also, University aims to bridge the gap with the society and the University organizes cross-sectorial dialogue for the enhancement of the academic rigor of the University.

The surging sustainability issues which include global warming, climate change, social responsibility, plastic waste, toxic water, outdated farming methods have hit almost every walk of life and we as an organization are aware of the urgency of coming up with the right solutions to these challenges. LPU offers a variety of research-based programs like Bachelor and Master Degrees in Renewable resources, Ph.D. program of environmental and Agri sciences, and the dedicated Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Agriculture, Biotechnology and Biosciences have devised an array of solar-powered vehicles, waste eating bacteria Aquaponics, Aerodynamic Human Powered Vehicles and mechanical gismos which not only run on but also generate clean and green energy. These innovations are the answers to the development and energy related global challenges.

LPU’s Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) is the center, which is housed with a wide range of high-end

instruments for pushing the boundaries of research in science and technology to higher level. These instruments and facilities help the faculties, research scholars and students to carry out globally competitive research in basic, applied and medical sciences. More to this, our students are working day and night in bringing some new fruitful innovations to society that is will help in preserving our nature in a number of ways. We being a responsible organization know the damage being caused by Carbon emissions and trying to reduce it using solar panel installations and bicycle initiative, Water table initiative, and Sewage Treatment initiative.

In 2019, LPU contribute and 500+ SDG based papers with 38 specifically climate change based having 10% cite score and 181 FWCI. A compulsory subject based on Environment is being taught in 25 domains to start the change from grass-root level. In 2017, LPU’s two Ph. D. Scholars developed E-Parirakshak in the year 2017. The idea behind this invention was to develop a device that could monitor agricultural lands for fertility, soil temperature, and moisture, besides controlling water pumps, blowers, and sprinklers. E-Parirakshak was listed among the Top 15 projects presented at the PRME 2020 IILM Sustainability Carnival held in Greater Noida. The device consists of several sensor nodes that are deployed in the field, a handheld tool that displays information and micro-controllers. It can detect diseases and infections in the crop, simultaneously updating the farmer. The device can be used for both modern and traditional agriculture-open field, hydroponic, besides vertical farming. There is no need for internet and it has a range of 10 km with star topology which can be increased by using mesh topology.

In addition to that the innovative Walking-Bicycle which is a bicycle with legs is a potential solution to produce clean and green energy while burning the calories. The invention combines the walking with cycling. The rear wheel of the cycle is replaced with a mechanical assemblage of links to idealize a walking object. This project is built with the aim of providing health benefits as well as generating small scale electricity for home use. With 2 hours of cycling, it can generate electricity which is able to supply energy for 24 hours of daily use in a normal house.

The number of international students on the campus from the developing countries is increasing every year. It is very encouraging in terms of students coming from these countries for higher education and research. The number of research papers related to the SDGs published by the University during the period of Jan-Dec. 2019 is 547. Out of these papers the number of international co-authorship from Low and Lower- Middle income countries are 71. Campus and Public Engagement

LPU actively builds a subculture of sustainability by means of incorporating sustainability elements into education courses for new faculty, staff, and

students. Further, myriad activities are organized at campus that involves participation of various internal and external groups.

I. Nurturing Sustainability Talent

I.1) LPU Orientation Camp

Freshmen Induction is an initiative to make students acquainted with the culture and norms of the institution that introduces students to the life at the University, the academic procedures, as well as all the platforms and opportunities that will be made available to them during their time here. Opening Week consists of reporting at University and Induction. Induction activities engage and excite students to begin with the new and important stage of their education, making them aware of the prospective opportunities available in order to be successful professionals. In induction students also get familiar with UMS-University Management System. Moreover, induction is an opportunity to meet faculty and familiarize with department/school, by preparing as much as possible before teaching begins.https://happenings.lpu.in/why-fresher-should-attend-induction/

I.2) Faculty and Staff Development Programs

People working are the key to ensure that teaching is effective and carried in proper way. On regular basis, numbers of development programs are organized for both faculty and administrative staff to equip them with latest strategies. Faculty development programs promote teaching methods and strategies that increase students’ capacities for problem-solving, teamwork, and collaboration —skills required in a rapidly changing and increasingly global world. Further, development programs can provide guidance for engaging all students, particularly in the classroom, about the sensitive issues surrounding gender, religion, race, and ethnicity. Investing in such programs offers a means of ensuring that we cultivate teachers and students who value diverse ideas, beliefs, and worldviews, and promote more inclusive student learning. In these contexts, faculty development programs can help build faculty capacity both for meeting the needs of students and incorporating new disciplinary content about issues of diversity across the curriculum. New faculty induction is also organized during this new faculty learns about governance structure and administrative guidelines, new teaching and research trends, and how touse innovative teaching platforms. This orientation is designed to familiarize new faculty with the University, help them adjust to a careerin teaching and build relationships with peers, encourage them to bringsustainability concepts into the classroom and use innovative teachingmethods – thus contributing to a culture that takes sustainability into accountand values high-quality teaching.https://happenings.lpu.in/?s=Faculty+Development+Programs

II. Active and Innovative Sustainability Clubs

Clubs are possibly one of the single most important aspects of student life. These are the place of friendship, ersonal growth, career development and University inclusiveness. These clubs nurture skills and talents of students that they are not able to learn or develop through classroom teaching. In LPU there are more than 200 student organizations registered in Student organization cell that that works under 18 different genres and ranges from Tier 1(Fresher) to Tier 6(oldest) including sports, cultural, social, technical, literary and hobbies and recreational. Joining these clubs or student organizations gives a lot of opportunities regarding the people meet and the ease with which students can make new friends and integrate faster when being a freshman. https://www.lpu.in/campus_life/student-organisations.php

III. Social Engagement

The social engagement, personal development, and community involvement achieved by participating in service learning can help in making students feel more confident, in touch with peers, and a vital part of the both the University and the community at large, all factors that encourage them to stay in University. The faculty and students at LPU are bridging the gap between local communities and the world throughstudent volunteer services, continuing education, and industry-governmentacademiacollaboration. Every year number of social engagement programs are organized by University.

The post-industrial world presents the globe with unique challenges of not just creating infrastructure and stimulating technological innovation, but rather catalysing and sustaining innovation and infrastructure that is accessible, generative and resilient. Cognizant of this responsibility, Lovely Professional University seeks to work with all stakeholders to create and promote a robust ecosystem of equitable and resilient innovation. Its endeavour is to evolve an industry-University collaboration to contribute to co-creation of knowledge at local and national levels, and facilitate production of solutions by bringing together students and both the public and private sector. It is the combination of these core missions that grants the Lovely Professional University its impetus towards conforming to the ideals envisioned in SDG 9.

Various activities including projects, workshops, symposium and seminars have been undertaken to facilitate growth of innovative practices and research outlook. Prominent of them are: • Students Experiment with Hydroponics: A technology developed by Lovely Professional University

students in which the plants are grown in an artificial environment without soil. Various ensemble approaches like hydroponics, aquaponics and aeroponics are utilized. The growth rate of a hydroponic plant is 30 to 50 percent faster than a soil plant, grown under the same conditions.

• Research on Aquaponics: Lovely Professional University students have also undertaken aquaponic project to explore its sustainability and increasing awareness of this food production system. Aquaponics, a combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (soil-less plant farming), uses fish wastewater as a resource, circulating it through hydroponic grow beds where plants take up its nutrients. The filtered water is then recycled back through the fish tanks.

• Flying farmer: Conceptualized and built by Lovely Professional University students, Flying Farmer is a wireless sensor device used in farming and field survey of forests. It plays an important role in enhancing mapping and survey of yield and biomass. By using this technology, one can support and increase the precision in farming with different sensors and also estimate nutrient content.
