Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to -
1. Provide ideas regarding a topic
2. Note important details by listening to the recording and fill in the blanks
3. Find out information by interviewing their partner.
Teaching Aid: Fill in the blanks worksheet. Internet Addiction test sheet. Letters. Colourful whiteboard
markers.
STAGE ACTIVITIES TEACHING AID
A
SET
INDUCTION
3-5 minutes
1. Teacher greets students and cues them to put
their books away to prepare themselves for the
lesson.
2. Then the teacher breaks the class into 4 small
groups and requests each group to sit together.
4. After getting students to settle down the teacher
asks:
“With the advancement in science and technology
nowadays, what else do we use to connect with
each other besides using the telephone?”
B DEVELOPMENT
25 minutes
PRE-LISTENING
o Board Writing
1. The teacher writes the word “Internet” on the
board and allocates different sections for each
group.
2. Then, the teacher asks students to brainstorm the
same topic by first noting down their ideas on paper
in their group.
3. After that, one scribe from each group is required
to come up front and write the group’s ideas on the
board.
4. Next, the teacher requests the whole class to read
out the ideas that have been written on the board.
5. Subsequently, the teacher distributes the
worksheet to each student and lets them scan the
whole page.
WHILE LISTENING
o Listening for details
1. The teacher informs the students that they will
listen to conversation between a student who is new
to the internet, and his computer teacher.
2. Then the teacher reminds the students that they
are required to concentrate in order to be able to
retrieve the information from the question in order
to be able to fill in the blanks on the worksheet.
3. After listening, the teacher discusses and reveals
the correct answers to the class.
4. The teacher then instructs the class to keep the
worksheet to get themselves ready for the next
activity.

POST LISTENING
o Problem Solving
1. The teacher asks students to take a good look at
their life continue to ask a list of questions:
How do you know if you are abusing the Internet?
Are you spending too much time on the Internet?
Are you having conflicts with your family, friends or school because of your Internet usage? Let us find out.
2. Then, the teacher distributes the test sheet on
internet addiction to assess students’ level of
addiction.
3. The teacher sets 5 minutes for the students to
answer the Internet Addiction test questions and
calculate their internet addiction score.
4. Then, the teacher find out the students’ result by
requesting them to raise up their hands based on
their test scores.
5. The teacher asks students to check out page 228
on their textbook to find out the description to their
internet addiction test scores.
6. Based on internet addiction score, the teacher
breaks the class into pairs and distributes a set of
interview questions for each pair.
7. The teacher instructs each pair to interview each
other and write out their answers on a piece of
paper.
8. The teacher informs the class that the
information that they have received from the
interview session will be used to complete their in-
class assignment.

1. The teacher instructs students to write a letter to
encourage and advice their partner on how to deal
with internet addiction.
2. The teacher then requests student to ‘mail’ their
letters to the teacher.

1. The teacher congratulates class for their
cooperation and performance.
2. The teacher then asks what have been done
during the entire lesson to recap what the students
have learnt.
Follow-up activity: The teacher reads out the best advice/encouragement letter to the class.

Ramli: Excuse me Mr Wong, I have a few questions about the Internet to ask you.
Mr Wong: Certainly, Ramli. What would you like to know?
Ramli: What is the Internet?
Mr Wong: It is the world's largest computer network, also known as a huge public information highway or infotainment superhighway.
Ramli: Who owns it sir?
Mr Wong: The Internet is not owned by any one company. It resembles the world's telephone system. Each portion is owned by someone and the overall system hangs together because of a variety of agreements among those organizations.
Ramli: What are the things that one can do on the Internet?
Mr Wong: Well, there is virtually no limit to what one can access on the Internet. Most people use it to send e-mail, form group chatlines, grab files from electronics libraries or cruise the World Wide Web.
Ramli: What does it take to get into the Internet?
Mr Wong: You need to have an Internet account or connection. Some types of Internet connections are: mail connections, which aren’t much good, dial-in terminal connections which require you to work with the command line or text menus, permanent connections and dial-in direct connections.
Ramli: What is the difference between a service provider and online services?
Mr Wong: A service provider is a company that sells access to the Internet. You dial into its computer, which connects you to the Internet. The online services, on the other hand, have all sorts of file libraries, chat services, news services and so on within the private areas of the service themselves.
Ramli: Thank you, Mr Wong. I guess that’s enough for today. I will try to remember what you have taught me.
Mr Wong: You’re welcome. Do feel free to ask me questions any time.
