Things To Do in November

The 1st IssuuLove for adventure is something we never lose entirely. However, at some point in our lives we are convinced that it's time to 'grow up' and become 'responsible'. Everyone has to make a living, care for their work and family responsibilities, but all too often we forget the sense of wonder and love for adventure we felt as children. Every stream became a roaring river daring us to cross it, every rock became a mountain we needed to conquer, colours were brighter and food tasted more delicious. Everything was meaningful and exciting. We'd like to help you remember those days, we'd like to get you off your sofa, out of the office and out to experience the wonders that South Africa has to offer.

In this, our first issuu of Love4Adventure we share some of our recent adventures and hopefully inspire you to have some of your own.

ust 35km drive from Cape Town along the N7 will transport you to a windswept land of pastures and Jlush tall grassland. The Mother

City disappears in the rearview mirror, the mountain sinks and you can almost imagine Rohirrim riding through seas of grass, golden sun glinting off helm and hauberk and bright hair flowing… that is until that one fool starts driving like a complete muppet behind you and destroys your Lord of the Rings fantasy. Yeh there is always that one guy (you know who you are) who tries to ruin your holiday by behaving like a total tool on the road. Once I’d blasted him away with the missiles behind my headlights I could relax again and immerse myself in the splendor of the Swartland.

Approaching the Piekenierskloof pass you can’t help but be overcome by a sense of awe as the great wall of the Olifantsrivierberg rises in front of you. The pass gently climbs the berg, affording you magnificent views of the Swartland. At the top of the pass you are greeted by a few farm stalls and guest lodges – including Hebron, our

new favorite in the Swartland / Olifantsrivierberg area, but we’ll get back to that later.

Roughly 16km from the top of the pass finds us at the entrance to the Citrusdal Warm Bath Resort. I had last been to the baths 10 years prior... and to be honest I can’t understand why it took me so long to go back. I don’t think I would stay in the resort proper – my wife and I stayed in a great chalet / ‘huisie‘ right next door to the owners private guest house. The chalets are basic, but that was exactly what we wanted. A little time out from the mod-cons. No TV, poor cell phone reception (I turned mine off), a nice outside braai area and the private outdoor bath.

When we first arrived I was forced to complain, apparently the ‘tool factor’ had been present here too. There is something that really bugs me, and that’s smoke, smoking and cigarette butts. The previous guests at the chalet quite clearly had zero respect for nature or for anyone else and left the detritus of their filthy habit laying all

about the braai and bath area. The owner, Alan Hall, cleaned it up himself and expressed sincere apologies. Thanks Alan!

With the cigarette butts cleared we got down to the serious business of relaxing! The outside baths are serviced by the main spring via pipe – it works just like an ordinary bath, so no surprises there. The water is soft and warm and very soon we forgot all about work and city life.

After a good long soak I hopped out and, much to my wife’s chagrin, went about getting the fire going wearing nothing but a foolish grin.

All you hear are birds chirping and the calming sounds of trees and water.

That evening we were in bed quite early, I don’t think I’ve fallen asleep before 10pm in a long, long time. The moment my head touched the pillow I was unconscious. The next morning we had every intention of getting up early and walking up the mountain but the duvet somehow overcame us and we got stuck in bed until a little after 10am. After a shower we strolled up to the main resort restaurant and devoured a hearty brunch, a burger with bacon and egg on top, while chatting to some of the campers. Our bodies fueled we walked up to the rock pools and sat under the trees enjoying the tranquil sounds of nature.

And that is the GREAT thing about the outside chalets... total privacy. It’s like being in your own personal garden of Eden.

The walk back to the chalet awoke in me a childhood memory. It was the trampoline that triggered it. Without a second thought I lost shoes and socks and began bouncing and somersaulting like a... like a... well, like a gummy bear I guess. Once we had all the ‘bounce’ out of our systems it was back to the chalet for a soak and a braai.

Thursday morning came far too soon. Two nights is not long enough at The Baths, I would recommend at least three nights, if not longer. We packed our bags and waved the baths goodbye. Having decided to do some reconn on the way into Citrusdal the Town, we visited Tree Tops and Elephants Leisure Resort. With all respect I was not very impressed with Elephants Leisure Resort, despite their level of luxury. While I can’t really fault the place, I just did not feel as welcome as I had at The Baths. Then it was on to town to find a good spot for breakfast and gather some further intel on the area. Margot du Toit at the Citrusdal tourism information office proved invaluable in that regard. She explained that Hebron, at the top of the pass, was the best spot for breakfast, but that we were probably too late. As it turned out, Steve, the owner and my namesake, is a top bloke and kept the kitchen open. He even let me into his kitchen, made us a custom breakfast (I love his homemade Kudu wors) and generally acted like the true ‘old friend’ host that he is. Breakfast was delicious, if a little pricey, which we forgave in a heartbeat. Hebron offers an assortment of

54

homemade goodies like marmalade, hot sauce, preserved figs etc. The only problem is that it’s all so good you have to be selective or you will leave with a car full of goodies. You can’t really complain about the prices, especially when most of the profit goes into a trust to build homes for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. I did say that Steve is a top bloke!

e really needed that! It was just 2 nights away but it was a Wperfect way to recharge and

relax. Aaah! The warm spring water, being Adam & Eve in our own secret Eden (we stayed at an Outside Chalet at The Baths, Citrusdal) really helped me to reconnect with my Love, once back in sync I can even read his thoughts again (useful when men forget to use words!).

We managed to go to The Baths midweek, before the school holidays, so things were quiet. The fresh valley air, hundreds of chirpy birds, spring colours and friendly locals make Citrusdal a great destination - and at only 175km out of Cape Town, with great scenery all the way, there is little reason not to go.

I didn't do anything I thought I would! I didn't start mulling over my friend's business plan, didn't write in my diary and I didn't think about anything or anyone... other than the 2 of us - in the moment - and ideas and dreams for our future.

There is an old broken down mill near the entrance to The Baths which intrigued us. The Halls are starting a fund to repair and restore it. Despite its state of disrepair, when the sun hits it

We spent plenty of time soaking in the private bath and strolling around the resort.

just right you have to admit there is something special about it.

At brunch on Thursday we met a friendly couple from Durbanville (on the deck, under the trees at the restaurant at The Baths). I forgot your names (sorry), but wanted to tell you that the birds we saw are Cape Turtle Doves.

We loved their car - a Toyota Fortuna, modified for offroad and originally used by some serious overland adventurers. We loved the weather and the beautiful spring flowers. It was only as we were leaving that we were told that autumn (Mar-May) is the preferred time to go, or winter for extremists. The PERFECT excuse to go back in Autumn... and Winter - ahem! Just to check, you know...

The village of Roossenekal (where? it's about 35km from Dullstroom and

111km from Pilgrims Rest in Mpumalanga. Yeh exactly why we

started Love4Adventure) is the natural habitat of the much sought

after Yellow Arum Lily or Zantedeschia Pentlandii. The festival,

Platteklip Record Attempt 2010

Are you SCUBA enough to take on the knee-busting gorge? We’re sending our very own Scuba Steve (Adventurer & Editor) to attempt the run up Table Mountain.

Scuba Steve will make the 700m TMdash in his Inov-8 F-Lite 320 PK's!

“Go Scuba Steve, Go!”

Are you crazy enough to even attempt to beat Andrew Hagan’s incredibly insane 2009 record of 27 minutes & 52 seconds. Scuba Steve's personal best (10 years ago) is 38 minutes 23 seconds, but he admits that he is well out of shape. He is hoping to place within the top 10 though! "Go Scuba Steve, Go!"

Magic of Bubbles

Whether you're a 'woo girl' or not I'm sure you're smiling and jumping excitedly in anticipation of a weekend with French flair, bubbly, culture and self-indulgence. (I immediately find myself thinking in a French Accent, it takes just one sip to get me going)

The centrepiece of the Methode Cap Classique festival is the grand marquee stretched over the sprawling lawns surrounding Franschhoek’s famous Huguenot Monument.

There will be plenty of restaurant and food stalls, mingled between the Cap Classique and Champagne stalls, offering delicious delicacies to match. The theme for this year’s festival is black and white, with a prize being awarded to the best dressed couple.

Wine Reviewo what do you do if you really enjoy wine... a lot? You buy a wine shop Sof course! Maybe that is not the

right answer for everyone but it's how we came to be involved in Wine Concepts. It was a case of the pieces of a 3D puzzle all coming together at the right time. Neil and I have owned Wine Concepts on Kloof for six years, but the brand has been around for 12 years. Murray Giggins and Mike Bampfield-Duggan, the founder/owners of Wine Concepts, have grown the brand to include 7 shareholders, all extremely committed and passionate about wine. Our passion for wine and customer service are the two most important qualities we have at Wine Concepts, it's what defines us. Nothing beats the instant gratification of sharing the story behind a wine with a customer and then seeing them buy it. Sounds corny I know, but it still hits the sweat spot.My first "ah ha" moment in wine happened 17 years ago while sitting in a converted cement fermenter enjoying a "wine evening" with a group of friends. Hugging my cider, Neil presented me with a glass of Nederberg Edelkeur 197... he whispered something unprintable in my ear and to this day I can still taste the hazel nuts and creamy, silky mouthfeel. In fact I still benchmark Noble Late Harvests against that moment, which is not really fair as it was nearly 20 years old when I tasted it.That being said a Wooded Chardonnay is my favourite wine. Chardonnay is best served with food as the wood can be rich and powerful and needs something to balance it. I also love an aged Cabernet, oh and Shiraz (new world style), older Red Blends, White Blends, interesting Sauvignon Blancs, wooded Chenin Blancs, LOVE Pinot Noir and of course Method Cap Classique. Ok I love them all even the obscure varieties and blends. My top three Chardonnays in no par t icular order are: Uva Mira Chardonnay 08, Rustenberg Five Soldiers Chardonnay 06 and Vriesenhof Chardonnay 09.

Noble Hill Shiraz Mourvèdre 200690% Shiraz, 10% Mourvèdre spent 14

months in barrel.Dark Ruby in colour with hints of spice on the nose. Although this is a Shiraz

dominated blend, the Mourvèdre definitely shows through with a meaty full mouthfeel. The Shiraz part brings

the leather and Cedar Tree aromas with dark berry fruit tones.

The Noble Hill Shiraz Mourvèdre is best enjoyed with red meat dishes. Venison would compliment the wine very well.

Noble Hill kindly matured the bottles for us so this wine is ready to drink now.

Vriesenhof Chardonnay 2009This wine has spent 11 months in the barrel giving it a rich golden colour with a beautiful nose of toast and vanilla. The 2009 has good citrus acidity that keeps the wine balanced. It has a rich silky mouthfeel & perfect elegance. The wine is topped off with a long velvety finish. While Vriesenhof Chardonnay is best enjoyed with seafood it stands up well to meat dishes with somewhat heavier spiced flavours. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for two years or more.

Silverthorn The Green Man 2008100% Chardonnay (Blanc de Blanc)

that has spent just over two years on the lees with some of the base wine

barrel fermented. This wine shows a beautiful straw hue

with fine beads, a hint of apples and freshly baked biscuits on the nose.

On the palate the Granny Smith apples are clearly evident giving the bubbly a

fresh mouthfeel and a fine mousse. This wine has a lingering finish with a zesty, racy freshness that makes you

long for another sip.The Green Man is best served with

sushi, or any seafood dish, it servesas a great palate cleanser too.

No need to drink this Method Cap Classique right away, cellar it for a

couple of years and experience the difference, but remember only 7000

bottles were crafted.

Wrapped in warm jackets and gumboots we jetted off to KZN early one wintery Cape Town morning in August. I'm not sure who was more excited to fly, me or the kids! The 'big plan' was to give the kids the chance to experience real snow – not the kind you play in at the Ice Station at GrandWest.

Landing at King Shaka International Airport was a world apart from the bustl ing act iv i ty at Cape Town International. The atmosphere was more 'off the beaten track' than thriving cosmopolitan, which allowed me to immediately switch my brain from 'frazzled working mom' to 'chilled world traveler'. Well as close as I'm likely to get for now anyway. The warm jackets and gumboots were discarded in favour of strappy tops and barefeet. But... there was not a blade of green grass to be seen on my beloved rolling 'green' hills, let alone a flake of snow!

Meandering through rural KZN we arrived three-and-a-half hours later at the welcoming resort-style entrance of the Drakensberg Gardens Golf & Spa Resort, a three-star destination operated by the Gooderson Leisure Group. Arriving mid-week, out-of-season, the resort was a peaceful, sprawling place nestled in a valley of high hills with the ragged Drakensberg peaks at arms length and peacock families roaming freely between the chalets and various other accommodation options.

Our self-catering, family-sized, semi-detached apartment had all the basics PLUS free DSTV which soon had me and the kids hooked on Bear Grylls' Ultimate Survival. Our days were spent climbing the surrounding hills, losing the colour markers several times, but always making our way back down to the resort with ease and the thrill of a new adventure in our backpack.

The resort itself is geared for family holiday activities (with or without snow)

and we were assisted by the capable, friendly 'Leisure Desk Lady' as we tried to decide between horse riding, trout fishing, badminton, tennis, boat rides and more. One week is simply not enough to try it all but the kids enjoyed many unforgettable firsts! Like the time the five-year old sent the table tennis ball spinning through the games room window to infinity and beyond, or when the seven-year old photographed 'brand new baby goats' born just before we left.

Although there are a few facilities in need of a revamp/upgrade (like the mini-zoo) and a bewilderingly disappointing eatery, in the form of the Bergview, the genuine hospitality of the staff at all levels ensured an unforgettable stay. The delicious buffet served at the Vineknot (complete with surprisingly varied wine list) was excellent value for money and the range of light and easy meals at the Bistro with its homemade chocolate cake, a chessboard to entertain the five-year old for hours and dramatic 'berg views almost had us staying permanently.

Motivated by Lewis Gordon Pugh's Achieving the Impossible (perfect Drakensberg-holiday reading) I started planning our trip back. It will include the nine-hour hike up the Rhino Horn peak followed by a long, cool drink on the Drakensberg Gardens terrace. And even though the kids still haven't played in 'real snow', right now I would settle for them dancing in the rain. It has been so scarce in the region that the once strong-flowing Umzimkulu River running the length of the resort has been reduced to trickling through the Hippo Pools and barely muddying our boots in some spots

The good news is it's raining there as I sit here, 1600kms to the south, smiling at the memory of our amazing, lovely family adventure.

The 2-ft Narrow Gauge railway is at the centre of the activities because it plays quite an important role in the ongoing transportation of items on the farm.

Military vehicles, agricultural traction engines, buses, cars, ox wagons with oxen attached are all to be seen there. Take a step back in time as you take a trip to Valima Siding. An optional

walking tour is available through the private collection of train and farm equipment.

Here are a few things you may or may not know about FICKSBURG

Situated in the scenic panorama of the Eastern Free State, along the Highlands Route, Ficksburg nestles between the foot of the Imperani Mountain and the banks of the Caledon River, the natural border with Lesotho.

Ficksburg was founded on 12 June 1867 and named after General Jan Fick, Commander-General of the old Orange Free State Republic.

Today Ficksburg is known as the gateway to Lesotho and the Katse Dam and boasts a large diverse population. Ficksburg’s economy is based chiefly on cherries, asparagus, cherries, deciduous fruit and cherries. At present there is renewed attention being paid to apples and cherries, with more farmers than ever planting apple trees.

The district is renowned for the breathtaking sandstone formations of the mountains with many of the older buildings in town built of sandstone. Interestingly, the Union Buildings in Pretoria are built from sandstone quarried in the surrounding area. Gumtree (not the popular site), a small settlement just outside Ficksburg, has the tallest sandstone structure in the world - an old mill which is sadly no longer in use.

One of Ficksburg’s best kept secrets! All of South Africa’s glazed cherries are produced in Ficksburg. Most residents of Ficksburg are not even aware that South Africa’s whole production of glazed cherries comes from this town.

The Cherry Festival with which Ficksburg has become synonymous is the oldest crop festival in South Africa and is held annually during the third week in November.
