enemies. I commit myself to this sacred task throughout my life. So let it be. Amen.

#ToKnow, #ToServe – Catholic Faith Appeal: What is it? What is it for?
St. John is incredibly blessed with such a vast spectrum of individuals and families that we call our Parish Family. Some have been parishioners for 25+ years, having helped established this church when it was meeting next door at Naples Park Elementary. Others just joined last week. Some have watched the buildings and events mature over decades. Still others have only just begun to explore the vast array of programs and opportunities to engage their faith. One term that those who have been part of our Parish Family for many years will recall is the Catholic Faith Appeal (CFA). There are many, however, who may not know about the CFA, or what it is for. This week I would like to explain this very important and worthy cause. The CFA is a Diocesan contribution in which all the members of the churches in Southwest Florida work together to support the central services we all rely on as Catholics and active community members. There are several essential efforts that rely on the CFA:• Catholic Charities: As a leading provider of social services,
Catholic Charities supports over 40,000 people with programs like direct assistance to pay their utility bills, emergency intake programs for those that have become homeless, ending human trafficking in our backyard, citizenship assistance, and veteran housing.
• Catholic Schools: It costs a tremendous amount to provide a high-quality education, and the CFA supports the Catholic Schools in the area to ensure members of our community can have access to this faith-based education system through high school.
• Vocations: From the Seminarian programs that instruct our future priests and deacons to providing support for the 35 different women’s religious orders and 26 different communities of brothers and priests within the Diocese, the CFA ensures we provide for the education
and well-being of those who have dedicated their lives in service to us and our faith.
Every year, the Diocese of Venice places a goal for each parish to provide a certain amount towards an overall need the Diocese has. For 2019, we have been asked to contribute $575,000. While we were able to overcome a significant shortfall at the end of last year, we would rather fulfill our obligation early and ensure our support for these essential programs for the Southwest Florida community. We ask if you have any additional resources you wish to support Catholic organizations with, that you make a donation to the Catholic Faith Appeal. We will be having a special CFA Weekend on February 16 & 17 to assist us with our goal. Your support, which is fully tax deductible, will provide assistance to thousands in our area. You can make a donation via Saint John by calling the office, giving to the Diocese directly, or on the website: http://saintjohntheevangelist.com/ways-to-give

Faith Formation Students Help Each Other Prepare for First Reconciliation
During this exciting time of sacrament preparation for 80 of our children, older students preparing for the sacraments took time to help several of the younger children prepare. With their humor and light-hearted sprits, the older kids put the younger ones at ease and helped to roleplay How to Go to Confession. What a blessing to have such collaboration! Our children will celebrate the Sacrament of First Reconciliation on Tuesday, February 12th, at 5:30 p.m. Please keep them in your prayers.

Safe Environment Classes for ChildrenDuring a portion of our Faith Formation classes on Sunday, February 24th/March 3rd and Wednesday, February 27th/ March 6th, we will have age-appropriate lessons for your children related to helping them stay safe, as required by our Diocese. The children will view a short video followed by lessons intended to reinforce the concepts learned in the video. Children will be grouped K-2nd, 3rd-6th grade, and 7th-8th grade. To help you become more familiar with the goals and objectives of the lessons, we will be sending home pamphlets with the children with helpful information. Please read through these brochures, and feel free to discuss with your children. If you have any questions about the objectives of the program or would like to preview the materials, please stop by my office. Adults can prepare in four Sunday evening sessions on March 17, 24, April 7, and 14 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. These days and times were chosen to make it as convenient as possible to prepare for this sacrament, but if that schedule doesn’t work for you, alternative arrangements can be made.
Whether you are ready to register now or would like more information, please send an e-mail to Jack Kindsvater, Adult Faith Formation and RCIA Coordinator, at [email protected], or leave a voice mail message at (239) 228 3918, including your name, email address, and preferred phone contact number. You will receive detailed information and answers to any questions in return.
Attend a Pivotal Players or Catholicism Session THIS WEEK.
Meet St. Francis of Assisi, This Week’s Pivotal Player
“Rebuild my Church!” That’s the mission Christ gave to St. Francis, and it’s the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is the reform and renewal of the Church to be accomplished? The life of St. Francis demonstrates that Christ intends the foundations of true and lasting reform to be built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints.
St. Francis lived radically and literally as Jesus commanded. They say he preached to the flowers, and removed tiny worms from paths lest they be crushed; could it be that the saints have a special instinct for the ties that bind us through God to every other creature?
Visit the central Italian countryside where St. Francis united a group of friars and revived the Church. Unlock the story behind how this mystic of the late Middle Ages shaped the life of the Church and changed the course of civilization.
Join other parishioners Monday at 7:00.
CATHOLICISM Lesson 4, Mary, the Mother of GodThis week, Bishop Barron masterfully correlates the Catholic Faith’s testimony to the revelation of God in Christ with the vivid practices of reverence offered to his Mother. Mary is explained as “an on-going presence, an actor in the life of the Church.”
By journeying from the humble remains of Mary’s house in Nazareth, to the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus, and to the great Marian shrine of Lourdes and Guadalupe, you will better understand the Church’s teachings about
Mary as the Mother of God, the Immaculate Conception, and the dogma of the Assumption.
IT IS NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU TO JOIN THIS JOURNEY.
Remember you are invited to come to one of the sessions this Thursday; the lunchtime at 11:30 a.m. (enjoy the 5 Saints Café sandwich special for only $5, or bring your own) or the evening session at 7:00 p.m.

Gospel Reflectionswith Father Tom
When Jesus went back to His home place, Nazareth, they invited Him to preach in the synagogue. Their first reaction to Him was extremely favorable. They were astonished at the gracious words He spoke. However, their admiration soon turned into doubt, then into hostility. What went wrong?
They still saw Him as just the son of Joseph. And they felt that if He had anything to offer, then they, the people of His own home town, should be the first to benefit from it. Without showing any real faith in Him, they demanded that He do in Nazareth some of the wonderful things He had done elsewhere – after all, charity begins at home. They felt they had a divine right to be the first to benefit from His gifts.
But He said that what matters is not who you are, but whether or not you have faith. There is no room in the Kingdom of God for privilege. God’s charity begins wherever there is human need, and the faith to receive it. He gave two examples – the cure of the widow of Zarephath and the cure of Naarnan, both of whom were Gentiles.
On hearing that the benefits they had rejected (through lack of faith in Jesus) would be offered to the Gentiles, the people were outraged. As Jews, they were the people of God. Those others were outsiders and sinners. How dare He suggest that the Gentiles would be preferred to them. They took Him from the synagogue, and tried to do away with Him. Why did they turn on Him so angrily? Because of what He said. That was the first reason. But there was a deeper reason. It was because He showed the ugly things that lay hidden in them. If you stir up a stagnant pond, a lot of mud will rise to the surface.
Regrettably, religion sometimes brings out the worst in people. It makes them narrower, more bigoted, and more apt to hate and kill. We see an ugly example of this in the citizens of Nazareth. But this kind of thing still happens. Religion can get distorted and turn into something repulsive, such as fanaticism and bigotry. Religion becomes
synonymous with narrow-mindedness, small-heartedness, and intolerance.
But religion can also bring out the best in people. It makes them more tolerant and more loving. True religion liberates the heart and the mind, and fosters harmonious relationships with others. Religion is beautiful when it is like this. The question each of us must ask is: What does religion bring out in me?
There is an essential link between faith and love. St Paul says, “There are three things that last: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love.” What’s the use in having faith and hope if we are lacking in love?

The Spirit lives to set us free, walk, walk in the light; He binds us all in unity, walk, walk in the light.
Walk in the light, Walk in the light,Walk in the light, Walk in the light of the Lord.
Jesus promised life to all, walk, walk in the light; We all are wakened by His call, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light....
By Jesus’ love our wounds are healed, walk, walk in the light; the Father’s kindness is revealed, walk, walk in the light. Walk in the light...
The Spirit lives in you and me, walk, walk in the light; His light will shine for all to see, walk, walk in the light.
Verse 1) Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief! Cause me to see you as you are: The King of glory, the Lord of love. The Shepherd of my heart!Bridge) Lamb of God (Lamb of God), Holy God (Holy God). I come to receive you now. Come into my heart, Fill my life, with your very Presence, Lord!
Verse 2) Too great for me, this wisdom of the Lord: to hold the Savior in my hand. And greater still, the gift of God: That I should be one with Him!
Coda) Lamb of God (Lamb of God), Holy God (Holy God), Lamb of God (Lamb of God), Holy God (Holy God)—Lamb of God!
Verse 1) Let the King of my heart be the mountain where I run. The fountain I drink from. Oh He is my song. Let the King of my heart be the shadow where I hide. The ransom for my life. Oh He is my song.
Verse 2) Let the King of my heart be the wind inside my sails. The anchor in the waves. Oh He is my song. Let the King of my heart be the fire inside my veins. The echo of my days. Oh He is my song.
Chorus) You are good good oh. You are good good oh. You are good good oh. You are good good oh
Bridge) You’re never gonna let, Never gonna let me down. You’re never gonna let, Never gonna let me down. You’re never gonna let, Never gonna let me down. You’re never gonna let, Never gonna let me down.
Ending) When the night is holding on to me, God is holding on. When the night is holding on to me, God is holding on.
Verse 1) When he rolls up his sleeves, he ain’t just ‘puttin’ on the ritz.’ Our God is an awesome God! There is thunder in his footsteps and lightning in his fists. Our God is an awesome God! And the Lord wasn’t joking when he kicked ‘em out of Eden, It wasn’t for no reason that he shed his blood. His return is very close and so you’d better be believin’ that our God is an awesome God! (to chorus)
Verse 2) When the sky was starless in the void of the night. Our God is an awesome God! He spoke into the darkness and created the light. Our God is an awesome God! Judgment and wrath he poured out on Sodom; Mercy and grace he gave us at the Cross. I hope that we have not too quickly forgotten that our God is an awesome God!

NET MissionariesNET Missionaries Spotlight
Editor’s Note: Since mid-September, eight young adults, NET Missionaries from Minnesota, have been a part of our Parish Family sharing their infectious enthusiasm as young Catholics. This is our third year hosting the NET Missionaries. We are very excited to welcome them as part of our Parish Family. Over the next few weeks, in an on-going series, we will introduce you to these young adults. Say hello when you see them.
Clare Delmore David Talty
Clare is 18 years old, from Orono, Minnesota. She loves to sing, play guitar, and ride horses! She is excited to attend Boston College in the fall of 2019 and cannot wait to study biology.
David is 18 years old, from Chaska, Minnesota. He has one older sister, one younger brother, and one younger sister. He loves sports, especially tennis and baseball. His future plans include getting a theology degree and working as a youth minister.
Host Families Needed. We are in need of parishioners willing to host two (or four, if you have space) of the NET Team for a two-week increment. You don’t need to worry about transportation – just provide a place for them to sleep, shower, and meals for the day. Please don’t pass up the opportunity to be a blessing to these wonderful young adults who are giving so generously of themselves to our parish! For more information, please contact:Kyle VanDuser, CYO Social and Spiritual Coordinator, at 239-207-0537 or [email protected], or Patsy Valentine, NET Team Host Home Coordinator, at 239-398-8332 or [email protected].
Host Experience“We provided their food, yet they nourished us.”
In our time hosting three NET girls, our family grew in number, but even more importantly, it grew in faith and love. They flawlessly blended into our family – in fact, they felt more like three more daughters (minus the complaining!) rather than guests. These young people are a gifted group – they are musicians and incredibly bright students.
I must admit, though, when we agreed to hosting the Net girls,
“They have been such an incredible example to my shy, seven-year-old granddaughter.”
I cannot fully express how wonderful these young people are, or how positive your experience will be when you host the NET Team. Mike and I have had all four girls stay with us and are now hosting the boys. We will also have the girls again before they leave for the summer.
They have been such an incredible example to my shy, seven-year-old granddaughter. She is bashful about prayer. I can’t explain why, but for her to see all of these teenagers bow their heads in prayer at meals and before bed somehow eased her mind that she is not “different”. They played with her, were incredible patient with her, made crafts with her. As far as she is concerned she has made lifelong friendships. They have inspired Mike and I with their love
of Christ and devotion to their faith. They love to laugh and sit down and chat when they have a bit of free time.
The NET Team put in long hours, so you get to spend time with them at breakfast and usually after 8:00pm. They are a hard-working group that puts in long hours without a single complaint. Some like to get into the kitchen with you on the nights they are actually home for dinner, and they volunteer to do the dishes!!! Who doesn’t love that?
I ask everyone who has a little bit of space to please open your home and your heart to these kids. They need a place to lay their heads down at night. They want to feel connected to the community they are here to serve. You will not regret it. It is an experience that I will cherish forever. Mike and I will do it over and over again.
- God bless, Kim Woodyard
I was a little concerned, not really knowing what to expect. Was our family religious enough? Would they like the food I prepared? Would they be comfortable sleeping in bunk beds? Would they be horrified by our chaos? All of these fears turned out to be baseless. This is not a judgmental group, but rather a loving one. They are not picky eaters, and they do not expect gourmet meals!
Please consider hosting members of the NET Team. I assure you this opportunity is a gift and not a burden.
- Patty and Michael Gahan
