The bulb…and the beautifulWE THINK we’ve figured out why daffodils and their jonquil buddies boast little trumpets… it’s to herald the start of spring… surely! Dah-da-da-Daaah! Daffodils stand to attention and play their bold springtime fanfare loud and proud from their wee plot of earth. And boy do we love it when they pop up out of the ground year after year. Helloooo spring! It’s so nice to have you back.Kyneton digs the spring-heralding-daffodil more than most. They love the happy bulb so much they dedicate an annual festival in its honour. The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival will be held Thursday, September 4, ‘til Sunday, September 14. The entire town celebrates the coming of spring with a jam-packed festival program of arts, craft, gardens, flower shows, food and wine events, music, theatre, and a heavy saturation of yellow with daffodils popping up all over town. This year’s theme is The Bulb and the Beautiful. See arranged blooms in shop windows and at the Springtime Daffodil Display; Saturday, September 6, ‘til Sunday, September 14, 9am-4pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Church (53 Ebden Street). Daffodil loving locals have arranged and curated the display. The Kyneton Spring Flower Show at Watts Pavilion (showgrounds) is an annual highlight for lovers of all things floral, with an amazing variety of daffodils (we see a theme here) as well as cut flowers, floral art and a creative children’s section.Saturday, September 6, buskers will take to the streets for the busking competition. Visit High, Mollison and Piper Streets to hear buskers play it out for cash prizes. Saturday, September 13, is the Daffodil Old Time Ball at Kyneton Town Hall. Dance to great live music and enjoy a feast of cream sponges and treats for supper from Country Cob Bakery. The arts program includes one act plays, exhibitions and art awards, and it all ends with the much loved Grand Parade and Fair on Sunday, September 14 from 12:30pm. Definitely worth tooting your horn for! For the full program go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au or call 5422 2282.

Hepburn Shire’s got talentPERFORMANCE Night at the Old Hepburn Hotel is a local institution. Traditionally held on the first Friday of the month (this month: Friday, September 5,) Performance Night is sort of like ‘Hepburn Shire’s Got Talent’ minus a Minogue or two. This month is the FINAL Friday night Performance Night as it is moving to the first Sunday of the month from October. Being the final Friday night it’ll be a big one with extra acts and extra fun. The New Performance Night from October will introduce afternoon sessions from 2pm, with a focus on youth. Kids from local schools (primary aged up) will be encouraged to get up and have a go. The regular five-minute open mic and 20-30 minute pre-booked spots will run afterwards. For more info and to book your spot call Nel Staite 0437 628 911. The Old Hep is at 236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs. Check them out at oldhepburnhotel.com.au or call 5348 2207.

PEOPLE go a little nutty about old stuff. To some of us ‘antiques’ and ‘collectables’ are just two fancy words for old crap. For the rest of us the very mention of ‘vintage’ sends us into a swoony nostalgia inducing spiral of lurve. For those in love with all things antique and collectable, you’re in luck… the annual Kyneton Antique Fair is on again this month! Hoorah! This year’s fair at the Kyneton Town Hall (Mollison St) welcomes vintage traders to the mix of antiques and there are sure to be many treasures to be found. Opening night is Friday, September 5, 5pm-9pm. Pop in to get first look at the good stuff. The fair will be open all weekend (Saturday, September 6, 10am-5pm, and Sunday, September 7, 10am-4pm). Browse jewellery, china, glassware, coins, militaria, small furniture items and more. Entry $7 (kids free). For more info call Haane Juul on 0428 878 048.

Springtime, butterflies, and a wholelotta wombatsWOMBAT State Forest is a magical place. Take a step or two out of your backdoor from both Daylesford and Trentham and you’ll find yourself hugging trees, hanging out with wallabies and roos, and tripping over wombats. The Wombat Forest is lucky enough to have a crew of dedicated locals who love our special patch of forest and all the flora and fauna that reside under the majestic canopy of gums. Wombat Forestcare are the guardians of our forest and regularly present interesting talks about life in the forest at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (cnr Market and High Sts). Saturday, September 6, Julie Whitfield will discuss the role of butterflies in and around Wombat Forest. With forest flowers about to bloom once again the butterflies are back. Come and learn more about them and their role in the forest from 1:30-3:30pm. Gold coin donation. For more info call 5424 1354 or like facebook.com/wombat.online.

Flowers, fascinatorsand ferrets

Bun fightat the cake stallHAVE you ever been lucky enough to go to a good old fashioned cake stall? You know, those little country fetes set up with table-clothed trestles, laden with glad-wrapped homemade cakes and slices for a few bucks? Pure. Joy. We have it on good authority the bakers of Kyneton are donning aprons, creaming butter and sugar, and pre-heating their ovens to 180 degrees in anticipation of a mighty fine cake stall coming up for the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. The Hospital Auxiliary Cake and Variety Stall will be held at the Lions Kiosk at the Mechanics Institute (81 Mollison Street) 9am ‘til midday, on Friday, September 5. If you’ve ever been to a proper country cake stall you know it can be a gloves-off battle for the good stuff, so our advice is to get in early, bring cash and savour your rewards with cream and a cuppa. For more info call Jean Lucas 5427 1206 or go to kynetondaffodilarts.org.au.

NEED some excitement in your life? Feel like shaking it up a bit this month and trying something new? Boy do we have the thing for you. Ferret racing. Oh yes. The annual Ferret Races will be held once again on Saturday, September 6, as part of the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival. This series of races is just what you need to get you through until the official Victorian Spring Racing Carnival commences next month. The ferret races will be held at Mechanics Reserve (Mollison Street, Kyneton). The Victorian Ferret Association (yes, this is the real deal) will be there to match it with the local ferrets (watch out) in a series of races and fun for everyone. The ferrets are racing for trophies (and the thrill and glory of victory) and will take to the track from 10:30am. For more information Eric Scoble is the bloke to call: 5422 6454. (Fascinators optional.)

Hunka hunka burger love…WHEN it comes to burgers everyone’s a connoisseur. You know what you like, you know what you don’t, you know what the essential ingredients should be… and what should ne’er be placed atop a patty. Some folks don’t like sauce (?) some shun the golden ring of pineapple, some say no to beetroot, and some like it ALLLL… piled up in a mountainous juicy hunka-hunka burger of lurrrve. Daylesford’s Galley Diner is the home of tasty burgers. Their menu reads like a burger lover’s holy grail. Ten burgers to choose from including The Heart Starter, The Big Kahuna, The (vego) Woods Burger, The Farmyard, and slow cooked pulled pork rolls, a chicken burger, and an American classic cheeseburger (Ok, we’ll just pause here to give you a moment to wipe the drool off your chin.) Right. Now where were we?The menu at Galley Diner clearly nails the burgers, and also offers a range of outtasight fried chicken, hot wings, ribs and crazy good sides. Like their big apple cider onion rings (they’re sweet, they’re salty, there’s fresh rosemary in the batter… hellooo)… The menu is made to order, everything (including the sauces) is made from scratch, is super fresh and so very tasty. Anna and Dorian moved to town and opened The Galley Diner a few months ago at 105 Vincent Street. All the food they create is made with love, and you can taste it. The diner itself is bright and fun, relaxed and welcoming, perfect for families or groups. They offer a catering service (and have recently catered a wedding… yeeeoww… how cool is that?) Galley Diner also has a take away menu, so you can order the Galley love and eat it at your place. (Hello… footy finals and burgers at yours? Yes?) The Galley Diner is open six days for lunch and dinner (Closed Tuesdays.) Pick up a take away menu at the cafe or give them a buzz for bookings or take away orders. 5348 3884.

Tell dad to get loston Father’s DayIF YOU’RE lucky, your dad will live to be a ripe old age. Which means he will have decades of Fathers’ Days to celebrate his Dadliness. That is… decades of Bunnings and JB-Hi-Fi vouchers ahead of him. This year forget the vouchers and treat him to a dad day out, have a long lunch followed by golf (of the mini variety) and then chase him around (or lose him) in a hedge maze. The Tangled Maze, at (2301 Midland Highway, Springmount - just out of Creswick) is hosting a father’s day feast (Sunday, September 7,) with a three course menu buffet lunch from 12pm – 2pm, followed by lots of afternoon fun. (Cost $34pp, children to 12 years $18.50, under 3s free.) Kids can play in the maze for free (Drag dad in for the ultimate game of hide and seek: level expert.) For the grown ups entry to the maze and mini golf is $5 each. For more information and bookings (essential) call 5345 2847 or go to tangledmaze.com.

Feeling so many feelsin arty CastlemainePUBLIC art is the best. It raises eyebrows, makes you question stuff, intrigues and amuses, annoys and uplifts, challenges and surprises. Love it or hate it, art in public places makes you FEEL SOMETHING. Which is EXACTLY what is it supposed to do. Sunday, September 7, is the launch of INTERCEPT, a temporary public art project in Castlemaine. You are invited to the launch, to take a walking tour of the works and feel something too. The project features works by Candy Stevens, Forest Keegel, Jessie Boylan and Kirsty Hulm. INTERCEPT will be launched by Anthony McInneny (Acting Program Director, MA Art in Public Space, RMIT). Meet at the front of Castlemaine Market Building (Mostyn Street) at 2pm to meet your artwork tour guide. Walking tours are conducted from 2pm-4pm. The official launch is 4pm-5pm. Spring in your stepand in your kitchen

Chop! Chop!spring chickens

SPRING is in the air… something about the blossom and daffodils and occasional hint of sunshine that makes you want to stash the slow cooker into the dark recesses of the pots-and-pans cupboard and jump into your refrigerator crisper and get a bit saladsational. An inspiring place to start a new outlook on fresh healthy food is the Absolutely Fabulous Fresh Food Festival, to be held Thursday, September 11, at Creswick Town Hall (Albert Street). From 12pm-5pm munch and mingle your way through the festival, there’s a free lunch, (who said there’s no such thing?) cooking demos, meet local growers, or take a simple health check. Melbourne Markets Fresh will be there too, with live entertainment, activities for the kids and more stuff than you can poke a celery stick at. Eat your way into a bit of inspiration for healthy living. For more info call 5345 9150. Entry is free.

RIGHT! It’s time to talk turkey. Um, sorry, chicken. Chef Annie Smithers likes talking chicken… and lucky for us she quite enjoys prepping and cooking it too. Annie Smithers’ Trentham restaurant du Fermier is one of the fave foodie haunts. Annie creates dishes inspired by French farmhouse cooking, with much of the produce originating from her very own garden. Annie generously shares her kitchen knowledge in a series of workshops held throughout the year. This month, it’s poultry prep time! Wednesdays, September 10, and 17, Annie will discuss and demonstrate the breaking down and boning of chicken, duck and quail, and share some super cheffy cooking tricks to boot. The masterclass will be held at du Fermier (42 High Street, Trentham) 10am-2:30pm and includes lunch with Annie. Cost $150. Bookings essential. Call 5424 1634. For more info go to dufermier.com.au/masterclasses

Winter is overtime to hit the trails!HERE in the Hepburn Shire one is surrounded by beautiful forest, State Parks and reserves criss-crossed with walking tracks and trails for hikers of all levels of fitness. For most of us, hitting the great outdoors is just a matter of pulling on a good pair of sturdy shoes and heading two kilometres in any direction from Vincent Street to find yourself in the bush. Lovely. Hepburn Shire has just launched a TrailRider All Terrain Wheelchair to make outdoor adventures accessible to many more people, (locals and visitors) with mobility issues. The TrailRider is suitable for low to moderate terrain and can be booked for use through the Daylesford Regional Visitor Information Centre. (98 Vincent Street). The chair is free to hire for up to seven days. It can be pulled apart to fit into a station wagon and easily reassembled for use.

To use the TrailRider you will need two people to assist (your own personal sherpas) and a helmet. With spring here the weather is improving and it’s time to hit the trails. Book the TrailRider in person at the Info Centre (and pick up a few maps of local trails while you’re there) or call 5321 6100.

from Creswick to Byron BayWeave your way

Nothing pointlessabout having a laugh

ADMIT it. At some point you’ve been at work and you’ve thought yourself, I’d rather be weaving baskets on a beach in Byron. Basket weaving is the ultimate default escape career. Instead of dealing with clients and customers you deal with the rhythmic flow of the weave, tactile natural fibres and if your chosen office happens to be Wategos or Byron Main Beach, your views are of the Pacific Ocean. SO! Interested in learning to weave? Of course you are! Sunday, September 14, Jill Taylor at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre (19-21 Victoria St) will be teaching the ancient craft in a six hour workshop. Use traditional techniques and natural fibres, explore the principles, ethics and permaculture ideals behind weaving baskets. Class notes are included, (your one way airfare to Ballina is not). Cost $80/$65 conc. For more info and bookings call 5345 2356 or go to creswicknc.org.au.

IT’S pretty pointless for us to tell you who Hughesy is. In Australia, Dave (Hughesy) Hughes is a household name, and that’s a good thing. It’s good to have a familiar face - in your face - to cheer you up when there’s so much global doom and gloom around. At the end of last year Hughesy quit his media career and he packed up his family for a roadtrip around Australia, (via the UK!) taking his brand of classic-Hughesy-stand-up-comedy on the road. Getting back to his roots, Hughesy is touring his Pointless show to big towns and small (read: London to Albany), and he’s coming to The Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine) Friday, September 12, from 7pm, to give us a laugh. Not a pointless exercise at all. Tickets are $44.90 and available from website. For more info call the theatre (5472 1196) or go to theroyalc.com.au.

School holidays move to a different beat

Hey theresnakey snakeyDID you know that of the top twenty most poisonous snakes on the planet… Australia is home to SEVENTEEN(!!) of them? True. Some of these venomous vipers even live around here. But don’t freak out, they’re probably still sleeping off winter. (Shhh…) As part of miniFest, kids are invited to make a wild and wonderful life sized snake (minus the deadliness) at the Make A Snake workshop to be held Wednesday, September 24, and Wednesday, October 1. This beautiful, creative workshop will be held at The ARC (Smith Street, Daylesford) and explores the patterns, colours, shapes and textures of animals. Design and make your own snake and learn about camouflage whilst indulging in a little hands-on creative crafty play. For more info and bookings grab your miniFest program or go to daylesfordarc.com.au.

miniFestmaxiFunIF YOU’RE a local and you have kids you’ll be looking skyward and doing a little (big) happy dance that the long cold winter is over. (Sorry to bang on about it folks…but the romantic fog/red wine/open-fires thing that we all love - and do sooo well around here - ain’t exactly for the kiddos.) Back in the dark days of fog and mist a couple of months ago, some ace locals organised a super school holiday festival for kids in the region called WinterFest and GUESS WHAT they’re so awesome that they’re organising another. Yippeee! miniFest is the September school holiday festival for kids aged from zero up! Monday, September 22 – Friday, October 3, The ARC (Smith Street, Daylesford) will be transformed to Festival HQ. The program is jam packed with fun stuff like Baby Disco (yes! – dance with your bubba to some ace tunes) rock climbing – on the proper rock climbing wall in the downstairs court, indoor soccer, and the massively awesome scooter grand prix (and round and around and around The ARC we go… weeeeee!)New stuff for miniFest includes Make a Snake (details page 24) a Hula Hoop workshop with Kareena… (ex Circus Oz and Guinness World Record hula hooper) – make your own hoop to take home and learn some super-duper-hooper tricks to show off as well, and the first ever carnival day!Carnival Day will be held Thursday, October 2, there will be not one… BUT TWO bouncy castles set up on the basketball court. And loads of proper carnival stuff, face painting, fairy floss, balloon critters, lucky dips, kids toys and carnie craziness and fun. There’s loads more stuff happening at miniFest, that is still being locked down as we go to print so make sure you grab your miniFest program for all the dates, times, costs and deets. The program will be distributed in school newsletters, kinder pockets, and all over the place. But if you miss your copy of the full program, all the info and booking details can be found at daylesfordarc.com.au.

Spring. (yay!) high time for high tea

Do-wop-up-dosbobby pins and pin ups WHEN you’re a kid you bust out the colouring books and experiment with colour. You go out of the lines, you smudge and scribble and play. When you hit your teens and the inspiration hits to play with makeup, the same principles do not apply. Going out of the lines and experimenting with colour ain’t such a good idea any more. MiniFest is hosting a Pin Up School Beauty Workshop, Friday, September 26, (2:30-4:30pm) at The ARC (Smith St Daylesford). Learn all the tips and tricks to the glamourous 40s/50s Hollywood screen-siren look. Bring makeup, brushes, combs, bobby pins, hairspray and a stand up mirror, and local pin-up gal Flirtatious Belle will teach you how to style up this classic look. The session is for 12-18y/os. For a full list of stuff you’ll need to bring and bookings go to daylesfordarc.com.au. (Handy tip: don’t wash your hair! It’s waaay easier to style if it’s been a few days since your last hair-wash #funfact101...)

SEPTEMBER is traditionally the fourth month of winter here in Spa Country (the fifth if you count May)… But on everyone else’s calendar in the southern hemisphere it’s spring baby! Yay! So we are embracing it with open arms, frolicking in parks, skipping through the flowers and considering baring our limbs in the not-too-distant future. If you have a little spring giddiness a great way to embrace it is to hit the Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens. (Enter via Central Springs Road.) At the top of the gardens is Wombat Hill House Café. Join them each Sunday from 2pm-4pm for high tea. Enjoy a glass of local bubbles and delicious sweet and savoury morsels of yum for just $40. Then stroll the awaking gardens, see the earliest spring blossoms and blooms, and tiniest leaf buds about to unfurl. For high tea reservations call Wombat Hill House: 4373 0099 or more info wombathillhouse.com.au

Your invitationto the annual hair cutSPARE a thought for the alpacas. They only visit the hairdresser once a year. How’s one expected to deal with that? All that regrowth… all that luscious… fine… luxurious… alpaca fleece regrowth?! One deals with it quite well actually. Creswick Woollen Mill indeed shear their alpacas once a year. It takes great skill to shear these big animals, and you’re invited to watch how it’s done, Sunday, September 28, at the Creswick Woollen Mill (Railway Parade). While you’re there browse their range of high quality contemporary pieces, knitwear, blankets, throws, scarves made from beautiful natural fibres including merino, cashmere, alpaca, cotton and bamboo. (And being the actual factory, the outlet prices are up to 70% off retail.) Creswick Woollen Mill is the only coloured woollen spinning mill of its type left in Australia, a remarkable piece of Australia’s history. To find out more call 5345 2202 or visit: creswickwool.com.au.
