for the month of PinktoberPink up

A little bit country… and a whole lot of fun

OCTOBER is breast cancer awareness month. Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa is supporting this national month of awareness with a special event, Saturday, October 4. Head to Mineral Springs Reserve (Hepburn Springs) and show your support for those individuals and families affected by breast cancer. Wear as much pink as you can and join in a mini field of pink ladies at the reserve. Do a free yoga session at 10am with Sarah from Continental House (BYO yoga mat). From 11am enjoy a ‘pink’ Devonshire tea with pink scones at the Pavilion Tea Room. (The menu will be themed pink all day.) From midday there’ll be live music, raffles and family fun, with another pink yoga session at 3pm. Buy a pink rubber duckie at the Bathhouse for the month of October and all proceeds will be donated to breast cancer research (…and yes, you can take your duck into the pool.) More info call Hepburn Bathhouse: 5321 6000.

REMEMBER when you were a kid… when your school held a fete? They were hands-down the highlight of the school year. School was transformed into a festival of fun with games, prizes, and the gooiest, stickiest, tooth pulling toffees. (Sooo loved those toffees.) St Michael’s Primary School (29 Smith St, Daylesford) is holding their school fete Sunday, November 2. It promises to be a good ol’ country (and western) Fair. Yeehar! Have a go on the bucking bull ride, pull on your boots for a bit o’ boot scootin’, there’ll be pony rides, a petting zoo, and fete classics like potato sack races, lucky dips, jumping castle, and oodles of stalls: trash and treasure, cakes, books, a spinning wheel (with amazing prizes donated by some seriously awesome peeps) the plant stall to end all plant stalls, food, proper coffee (of course… it’s Daylesford) and more. The fete is on from 9:30am-3pm. Entry is free. More info like facebook.com/StMichaelsSchoolFete.

Chop chop…it’s time for Chopped!NEWSTEAD is a quiet little town on the Loddon River. About 500 people call Newstead home. It is a peaceful, tranquil, sweet country town. The kind of town your Nana lives in… Awww. Each year the serenity is smashed to smithereens as thousands converge on the tiny town for Chopped… The (completely awesome) annual hot rod and custom car festival. Chopped will be held this year from Friday, October 3, ‘til Sunday, October 5. Chopped is (probably??) the only festival of its kind in the world (yeah, wow go Newstead!) It’s three solid days of dirt drags, hot rods, custom cars, awesome live bands, Tiki cocktail and craft beer bar, choppers (of course) a vintage speedway, sooo much chrome and loads more rad stuff. All custom cars on display are pre-1965. The festival is like stepping into a time machine and arriving at a 1950s/60s’ American Hop Up carnivale. There will be hundreds of cars and bikes to check out… with many of their owners on display too. Think: rockers with cherry tatts and leather, petrol heads, hipsters and greasers with more polish in their hair than on their cars (ok… maybe not…) This year the band line up is nuts with Cosmic Psychos headlining Saturday Night. Expect more than 25 bands playing rockabilly, garage and rock and roll, blues, country and a bit of swingin’ surf all day and well into the night. The Tiki Bar is a total step back into a loungey 60s vibe, with cocktails, bamboo, palms and DJs playing ‘til the wee hours. Chopped will be on at Newstead Racecourse (off Daylesford-Newstead Road). Camping will be available. Tickets are available online or at the gate (prices vary, check the website for deets and cheaper pre-bookings). For more info on the event including camping details, conditions of entry, merch, band line-up and maps go to chopped.com.au.For up to the minute info join the other quarter of a million Chopped likers at facebook.com/choppedrodandcustom. (not even joking… 257,248 likers and counting!)

Comedy 4 Karmathe funnest funniest fundraiserDAYLESFORD’S Dharma School is Australia’s only Buddhist primary school, and only one of three in the world. It offers an education based on Buddhist principles and has been teaching the youngest members of our community since 2009. The Daylesford Dharma School is an independent school and is growing, with the community embracing both the school’s philosophy and the families involved with the school. DDS is a not-for-profit school and needs to raise funds to support the growth of the school, and to continue their excellent work with the kids. Saturday, October 4, Daylesford Dharma School is hosting Comedy 4 Karma, a night of laughs to raise funds for the school. Hosted by Dave O’Neil, Comedy 4 Karma will be held at the Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) from 8pm. On the bill is the very wonderful and hilarious dead-panishly- awesome Hannah Gadsby. You’ll know Hannah from Spicks & Specks, Adam Hills Tonight, and Agony Aunts, or the Edinburgh Fringe if you happened to be there… Hannah also won the national Raw Comedy title back in the day. (Very excited she’ll be here for Comedy 4 Karma. Eeep!) Sammy J and Randy will also take to the stage with a few catchy tunes and lots of cheek – (they have recently played to sold out audiences at the Sydney Opera House and closed the Montreal Just For laughs Comedy Gala - wow). Anne Edmonds is also appearing on the night – She has also played to sell out crowds with her banjo at the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals. Yay hilarities! As we go to print we are waiting on confirmation of a couple more funny peeps for the line up as well. It promises to be one of the funniest nights ever at the Daylesford Town Hall. You can buy tickets to Comedy 4 Karma from the Dharma School website (dharmaschool.com.au) or try your luck on the door on the night. Tickets are $40+booking fee. For more info go to dharmaschool.com.au or give them a buzz: 5348 3112, or like facebook.com/DaylesfordDharmaSchool.

Fly like a buzzardsing like a bee

Sunshine and springtimeSaturday perfectionA COUPLE of months ago Glenlyon General Store had a little mishap with a little fire in the little kitchen. Oops. But they’re back baby, and they’re doing a not-so-little special event on Saturday, October 4, because... they can! From 3pm, Railroad Wrecks and the Hapless Brakeman are playing outside under the verandah (weather permitting… c’mon spring… do your sunny Saturday thing… not that tedious rainy thing… zzzz… no one likes rain on a Saturday). Then from 5pm, DJ Jenny Daggers will be playing ‘til 8. What a sweet springtime arvo The General has lined up for you… AND BEST NEWS… they’re organising transport from Daylesford = no designated drivers! Hooray drinkies in the sun (not rain) for all!! The Glenlyon General Store is at 63 Barkly Street. Like them facebook.com/GlenlyonGeneralStore for latest gigs, for more info and bus times call: 5348 7922.

QUESTION: who doesn’t love a seeing an intimate gig with friends in a backroom Lounge Bar? Answer: No one. And better still if said gig is at a fab country town hotel with a hand picked boutique wine list… and best of all if it’s an internationally renowned blues muso busting out a bit of rollicking boogie and dark hoodoo blues for $10 on the door. Sweet.Pugsley Buzzard is coming to the Lounge Bar at Daylesford Hotel, (2 Burke Sq) Saturday, October 11. Mr. Buzzard performs that kinda New Orleans deep jazz blues on his piano that will has everyone up and moving… (mostly involuntarily, you cant resist it, it starts as a toe-tap and takes over your body). Pugsley has recently returned from a European tour and will bring his unique blend of blues to the Daylesford Hotel for one night only. For more info call the hotel 5348 2335.

Be MADat 65 MainWE’RE all a bit mad. Sure, some of us appear a little more on the stark-raving-bonkers side of mad, but deep down we’re all mad. Christine Lewis is most certainly MAD. (It’s ok, we can say that… she’s very open about it.) Christine is a local lass so committed to being MAD that she is inviting others to join her in her MADness. OK… let us explain… Recently, Christine has started supporting The Hunger Project through her own venture, BE MAD. (MAD stands for Make A Difference.) Christine is encouraging everyone to be the change you want to see in the world, and to Make A Difference locally, globally and sustainably. Christine has hosted several fundraising events privately, and at her guest house 65 Main, to raise money for women’s projects in Africa through The Hunger Project.Thursday, October 9, Christine will host another soiree for BE MAD. You are invited to an evening of film and friends and the local premiere of short film: ‘A Great Man’ at 65 Main (65 Main Road, Hepburn Springs.) A Great Man is a film shot in the region by young filmmakers. It has gained much international attention and has been officially selected to screen in many international short film festivals, picking up awards along the way. The BE MAD Film, Friends, and A Great Man Premiere evening starts at 6:30pm for a 7:30pm screening. The event is BYO. (Bring a plate to share if you like.) Cost is $15 and all profits from the evening go to The Hunger Project. For bookings go to trybooking.com (search BE MAD) or call Christine: 0438 379 450.For more information on how The Hunger Project is empowering women to help their communities in some of the worlds’ poorest regions go to: thp.org.au. And to find out how you can BE MAD and become inspired to make a difference locally, globally and sustainably join Christine and like facebook.com/bemadrightnow.

A marathon efforton the trailBUSHWALKING is awesome around here. The Goldfields Track is 210 kilometres of beautiful forest, gold towns and history. The track meanders from Ballarat to Bendigo, up and over the Great Dividing Range just a few klicks south of Daylesford. It is a favourite mountain bike trail (one of the best in Australia we’ve heard) and can be tackled in stages, or in one almighty hike (with some restorative stopovers in cute boutiquey towns along the way.) Shane Hutton is something of a superhuman and last year completed an ultra run on the Goldfields Track, going the distance in just two days! (Yep. Holy moly.) This year he’s been at it again, this time inviting those along for the ride (um.. run) with him. He has already completed the first two stages from Bendigo to Daylesford (over two weekends in July and August) and is inviting fellow long distance trail runners to join him on the final leg of the run from Daylesford to Ballarat (Friday, October 10, to Sunday, October 12.) The distance is 72 kilometres - to cover in two days. (Friday night is a meet and greet in Ballarat and an early night to bed before Saturday’s marathon in the bush). – Literally… you’re running a marathon on Saturday... Sunday is an easy 30ks or so. (Pfft. Piece of cake). The run will have a support car on the trail at various points, you will be provided with a map, and Shane will be running the track too, but you will need to be a fully self-sufficient runner, carrying water and appropriate gear for the weather. As energising and as invigorating as it is to run in the fresh cool air in the bush… this ain’t no walk in the park baby. Fees are $315pp twin share. (There’s comfy accommodation Friday and Saturday nights, including the best hot shower you’ll have in your life on Saturday night - hearty energising breakfasts and light lunches are provided.) For more information on this run (and other adventures) go to theultralife.com.au. More info on The Goldfields Track see goldfieldstrack.com.au

Growers, Cookers and Eatersunite!BOY there are some decent humans in our region. We are surrounded by ace people who are passionate about important stuff. Many of the farmers in our ‘hood are super passionate about the produce they grow. They try to do it as sustainably, organically and gently as possible, creating the best tasting produce – much of it organic or heirloom fruit and vegies or rare breed meats - whilst treading lightly on our precious planet, creating a better food future for us all. Fair Food Week Australia is a national event happening Friday, October 10, - Sunday, October 19. This year Fair Food Week celebrates the International year of Family Farming. Many of our fab farming families will join together for Fair Food Week in Trentham, Saturday, October 11, for the Growers, Cookers and Eaters celebration of local food. This is a hugely popular (and delicious) event on the Australian Fair Food Week calendar. Savour an evening of the finest cool country produce grown by our fave local farmers and prepared by superb local chefs. Hoorah! This year those attending the event will enjoy multiple courses of shared plates and canapés, lots of scrumptious little morsels of local loveliness. Produce for the event will be supplied by Daylesford Organics, Angelica Organic Farm, Duck Puddle Farm, Jonai Farms, Sidonia Hills Beef, Milking Yard Farm, Holy Goat Cheese, Blackwood Organics and Trewhella Farms.Of course there’ll also be a bit of live music and it’ll be a completely delicious night out. The Growers, Cookers and Eaters event will be held at the Trentham Mechanics Institute Hall (66 High Street) from 6pm. Tickets are $65+booking fee (kids under 12 - $18). For more info and bookings go to trenthamfoodhub.org. For up to the minute info on who’ll be in the kitchen (sooo many great chefs… you’re in for a treat!) and what else the amazing peeps at Trentham Food Hub are up to, throw some love at: facebook.com/trenthamfoodhub.

(with apologies to team cat)Go team dog

Mia Dysonan idyllic night at the Old Hep

THERE are cat people, and there are dog people. Some like both, but most have a preference. Farmers prefer dogs. Sure the cats keep the rodent population down, but they’re no good in a paddock. Imagine having a Sheep Cat rather than a Sheep Dog? The sheep would be clutching their sides and rolling in the grass with laughter. Come and see why dogs are boss on the farm at the Castlemaine and District Agricultural Society Sheep Dog Trials, Saturday, October 18, and Sunday, October 19, at Camp Reserve, Forest Street, Castlemaine. These dogs are so clever, with a few whistles and nods we think they could pop out and do the groceries for us as well. (‘Carn Blue, ‘round the side, aisle 13… laundry powder - that’s the way’) The trials run from 8:30am-5:30pm both days. There’s a BBQ and refreshments on site and entry is just $4. (Kids free). More info at castlemaineshow.com.au.

MIA Dyson is a big fave around here. Her dusky vocals and ace lyrics strike a chord with… well, just about everyone actually. Mia’s on the road at the mo, on a national tour promoting her latest album ‘Idyllwild’ and OF COURSE she’s heading back to The Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road Hepburn Springs) to play her fave tunes for us. Yayness. Mia will take to the stage at the Old Hep from 5pm - Sunday, October 12. She has been a busy gal of late touring the US (and wowing them with her aceness) so we’re a bit chuffed she’s returning to her home town to share some tunes before she hits the Aussie summer festival circuit. Tickets are $28.60 from oztix.com.au. For more info on what Mia’s been up to lately and to buy the new album Idyllwild go to miadyson.com. For more information on the gig call the Old Hep: 5348 2207 or go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au.

Sketchy detailsand artistic flairBEING creative is a big part of life in this corner of the universe. For many of us, the urge to create is the life force that gets us out of bed in the morning. That, and coffee. (Usually both.) The region draws creative folk from all over to share in the abundant creative energy we have here. Catherine Pilgrim is one such creative person living in Castlemaine. She is a multi-award-winning artist and has exhibited for over 20 years. Catherine teaches drawing, and is offering an exclusive Drawing Retreat (called ‘Seeing’) this month in Castlemaine. The retreat is four days of immersive drawing from Tuesday, October 14, ‘til Friday, October 17, (with welcome drinks from 5pm Monday, October 13). It will be held in the creative space at the Newnorthern Hotel (359 Barker Street). The retreat is suitable for those wishing to develop and improve their observational drawing skills. The sessions will be hands on, using mostly graphite, and will encourage observational techniques, whilst discussing drawing, a little drawing history and honing your own ‘seeing’ skills. Each day you will also have the opportunity to explore galleries and artists’ studios around town. Including a private viewing of drawings not on display to the public at Castlemaine Art Gallery.Different aspects of drawing are covered daily. Workshop topics include: Line and Seeing, Drawing as an Optical Illusion (exploring negative space), Shape and Tone, Perspective, Still Life, and Texture and Line. The retreat will really help you get back to basics and help develop and fine-tune your skills as an artist. Imagine four blissful days focusing on that line on a piece of paper. Heaven! Places are strictly limited. For more info and bookings call Catherine 0412 550 100 or go to catherinepilgrim.com. Cost is $990 and includes gourmet lunches, morning and afternoon teas, and all gallery entrance fees. All drawing materials supplied. (Accommodation not included) Unlimited inspiration and encouragement is free.

A binoculared backyard birdie bonanzaYOU know when you cross the border into NSW… and suddenly the magpies have black backs instead of white and you go WOW THAT’S AWESOME?! …What do you mean you haven’t noticed that?? What do you mean the only Magpies you notice are the ones that didn’t make the finals this year? (*ahem* with apologies to the black and white army.)Listen, whether you’re a hard core twitcher, or if you just twitch a little when a bird poops on your windscreen, the reality is that birds are everywhere, and they’re actually completely awesome. This month everyone in Australia has the opportunity to take part in the biggest citizen science project, since, like… everrrr. (Birds and science… could this get better??) The Aussie Backyard Birdcount is on Monday, October 20, – Sunday, October 26. Find 20 minutes to hang out in your favourite green patch, (your backyard, a nearby park, a beach or wherever) and record all the birds you see. If you’re not that brilliant at birdie ID-ing it’s ok… BirdLife Australia has designed an app specifically for the event to help you record your local feathered friends. (The Aussie Bird Count App will be available to download this month.) The information recorded during our national week of birdwatching will be collected by BirdLife Australia and used to see how our birds are doing across the country. Once you start counting and recording birds in your ‘hood we’re pretty certain you wont be able to stop. You’ll sooooo be bragging about the Azure Kingfisher you saw on the Yarra one day when you were out walking at lunch, and the Purple Crowned Lorikeet chatting to you as you walked by its flowering gum, and the Lyrebird you startled on that rainy bushwalk in the Dandenongs, and the Pink Robin sitting on your garden tap in Daylesford… (all true folks, all true.)Unearth the binoculars, dust off the field guide and write the dates on the calendar now. For more info and to register go to: aussiebirdcount.com.au.

Raise a glassto the best in show

Get your goat onin BullartoBULLARTO is a dot of a village on the edge of the Wombat State Forest, about 10 minutes from both Daylesford and Trentham. The community is lucky enough to have a wonderful primary school that tends its very own herd of goats. These much-loved goats have a festival held in their honour each year. This year Bullarto Primary School’s Goat Festival will be held Sunday, October 26, at the school (131 Bullarto Sth Road). Join the families at the school for a day of fun and goaty goodness. There’ll be stalls of goat products, soaps, cheese and other goaty things, try a goat sausage from the BBQ, jump like a goat on the jumping castle, check out the cooking demos, wander the stalls and meet the goats that help make this great country school so unique. Help support the school and have a great family day out. Entry is $5 and includes a ticket in the raffle. Call Bullarto Primary School for more info: 5348 5559.

RAISE the terroir alert to 10… the Daylesford Wine Show is nearly here (how’s the dad-wine joke? – hilare). it Wake up

it’s time to relaxBEARS have it sussed. Winter is totally made for hibernation. Clever bears. Why don’t us human types get into a bit of hibernation? We’d happily sign up for three months under the doona in a onesie. Wake us up when the sun’s back, the footy finals are on, and once the winter heating billing-cycle has passed. You know the first thing we’d do after waking from hibernation? We’d eat a sandwich. Then secondly, we’d hit the day spa. What a way to wake up; a facial, waxing, bit of a mani… and a tan (“haven’t you been hibernating?” – “what me? Nah, I’ve been in Queensland.”) No one will ever know. So, if you have been hibernating… and perhaps slept in through September (we understand, September is still cold here), EKO Skin.Care.Spa (1 Camp Street, Daylesford) has some fab October specials to make you look and feel alive – like you’ve spent three months on a Queensland beach. Wink wink. There’s a luscious range of beauty and spa treatments, all created to help you relax, indulge, and look your best as the party season nears. The EKO menu of treatments includes waxing, tanning, nails, eyelash treatments, facials, heavenly relaxation massage, remedial and deep tissue massage, and pregnancy massage, and packages with combos of all the best stuff. So wakey wakey! Time to look lively people! Call EKO on 5348 3154 or 0429 681 030. Like facebook.com/EkoSkin.Care.Spa, or for their full list of treatments go to ekospa.com.au.

Maldon Folk Festivalthat’s all folks...

Marketin your diary

MALDON is a town that likes to flaunt its history. It’s out there baby with its heritage-ness. The town is classified by the National Trust and much of the 19th century town centre stands today as it did back in the days of gold. Maldon also has a well known musical history and has hosted its own Folk Festival for over 40 years. This year’s Maldon Folk Festival runs from Friday, October 31, to Monday, November 3rd. Expect tunes and tales, musical theatre, buskers, bush dancing, poetry and spoken work events, workshops, an instrument makers’ exhibition, a market and a children’s program. This annual festival is a folk celebration with loads of quality local and international musicians and entertainers playing all weekend. There are oodles of ticket options for the weekend depending on how much folk rocks your boat. For more info, full program or tix see maldonfolkfestival.com or throw a like at facebook.com/MaldonFolkFestival.

YOU know how in August one of your friends mentioned that is was only 20 weeks ‘til Christmas and you had to be physically restrained so as not to slap them? Yeah, well that friend should be just about finished their Christmas shopping by now. (You have our permission to unfriend anyone who has finished their Christmas shopping… Especially as the best shopping is yet to come!) The Hanging Rock Craft Market only happens twice a year. On Sunday, October 26, spectacular Hanging Rock is the backdrop to hundreds of stalls with the best makers and crafty-types in the state selling their hand made items. There’s loads of amazing food to sample and indulge in, and fresh produce of the highest quality. It’s a fantastic day to find unique Christmas gifts or something spesh for yourself. Entry is $5 (parking fee). The market is open 9am – 2pm. More info at craftmarkets.com.au.

The art of enjoyinga four day weekendREALLY?? Are we there already? Is it really almost time for the Melbourne Cup again? Truly? The first weekend in November is many things… it’s frocks and fascinators, it’s horsies and hats, it’s sweeps and shenanigans… and it’s also… if you play your cards right… four glorious days off work. It’s not just the race that stops the nation… it’s the four day weekend that sends this state into party-mode-lock-down. So what are you going to do with your four day mini break huh? COME UP HERE OF COURSE! The only birdcages we have in Daylesford involve chooks, but we’re still up for a fancy hat and two bucks each way on the favourite like the rest of the universe. Something else that happens up here during the Melbourne Cup long weekend is the Daylesford Art Show. Our annual art show has been running now for 27 years and is a must see event on Victoria’s art calendar. Collectors from all over the state come to buy art from local artists, with over 2000 people through the doors last year. This year there will be hundreds of works on display in five categories, each category with a $500 prize to be won, (plus a people’s prize). Everyone is invited to view the works at Daylesford Town Hall (Vincent Street) Friday, October 31, – Sunday, November 2, 10am-5pm and Monday, November 3, ‘til 2pm. (Entry is by gold coin donation.) There are limited tickets to the Preview Opening Night: Thursday, October 30, (6pm-8:30pm). This private viewing is your first opportunity to see and purchase the works. Tix are $20 (book at daylesfordartshow.com.au). The Daylesford Art Show is not only your opportunity to buy a piece of great art, but also a chance to meet the artists, and for them to build their networks and meet potential buyers and galleries. Everyone’s a winner. For more information about the Art Show, go to their website (And artists… it’s not too late to enter!! You have until Friday, October 10, to get your works in! – Do it!) For more information about the show or to enter call Jan Pengilley 5348 2000.
