Ancient storiesand awesome ancestryTHERE’S nothing like the sound of the Didgeridoo to conjure images of Dreamtime stories to transport you to another time. The Castlemaine Children’s Literature Festival is hosting two Didgeridoo and Indigenous Storytelling sessions at Fryerstown School (5 Camp Street) on Tuesday, October 1, at 11am and 1pm. Ron Murray will lead the storytelling with his awesome sounding Didg. Ron celebrates the cultural heritage of his ancestors through story and song. He is a cultural educator, story-teller and keen didgeridoo maker, and will be sharing music and stories with the kids in this awesome session. CAPTAIN Dyson is not just your pet name for your vacuum cleaner. Around here, Capt. Dyson is a name that conjures memories of a little monkey business… Quite literally. Back in the ‘60s, Capt. Dyson was the owner of what is now Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat. He had a few businesses in his time including operating steam launches from Princes Bridge in Melbourne and running an amusement business on the Maribyrnong. One of the attractions was ‘The Captains’ Monkeys’ and he would often bring a few monkeys back to Hepburn Springs, where they were allowed to wander freely throughout the hotel during the day. Patrons of the bar at ‘the Mineral’ (as it was known) were often hassled by cheeky monkeys, and they were wise never to order peanuts to munch on with a cold one, as they never lasted long with the monkeys around. Capt. Dyson and one of his infamous monkeys features on the lost cover this month.

Choppedhot diggety rodsIN SIX short years the Chopped Rod and Custom show has gained a huuuuge following. And it’s no wonder. This unique festival is the only one of its type in the world. Chopped is a wild celebration of hot rods, pre-1965 style custom cars, music, dirt drag racing, bikes and sweet 50/60s style. Chopped is for the custom community, the motor heads, the music lovers, the hipsters and greasers and those that just want to bask in the awesomeness of everyone else’s cool, and hope a little rubs off on them. The event is held over three days (Friday, October 4 ‘til Sunday, October 6) and this year features a crazy line up of more than 25 bands including Graveyard Train and Hard-Ons. The music genres vary from rockabilly to garage and rock, a bit of country, swamp and surf. The innocent looking country racecourse at Newstead (at the end of Racecourse Road, Newstead) will be transformed to a seething, pulsating soup of sensory overload. Chrome will be polished, hair shall be coiffed, (and almost as shiny as the afore mentioned chrome). The rods and bikes will be flaming and rumbling and the bands loud and awesome. Get your cocktail on at the Tiki Palace bar - be transported to a 60s style American island bar, think tikis, palms, bamboo and a giant Easter Island Head… which happens to blow flames up into the sky at night… Crazy. Coconuts.Camping is permitted at Chopped (kinda handy if you’ve had too many cheeky-tiki-pina-coladas… also handy as Newstead isn’t known for its extraordinary fleet of taxis to take you home). There are individual day passes, festival passes and many combos available depending on how long you want to stay. Day passes are $35, kids $25, (under 12s free) Check their website for multiple day pass/camping costs. There’s so much to-ing and fro-ing to be done in the hols, as well as the regular boring day-to-day stuff, that during this time a parent becomes a kind of uber super human, (compared to the bog standard ‘regular super human’ status parents usually hold). Wonderful words for our little wondersTHE Annual Castlemaine Children’s Literature Festival is a fun celebration of words for children and young people. Held in and around Castlemaine in the second week of the school hols (Monday, September 30 – Sunday October 6,) the program is bursting with wild and wonderful wordy wonders for children of all ages. Kids can immerse themselves in interactive workshops and talks with authors and illustrators. There are Harry Potter events, Indigenous story telling sessions, storytime for babies and pre-school kiddos, as well as songs and poems and rhymes and plays, and lots of words and drawing. The ARC, (Daylesford’s Arts, Recreation and Cultural centre, in case you were wondering) is a large multi purpose facility, regularly used for indoor sport. Even in the middle of Daylesford’s cold winter, when outdoor sport is ten times tougher, due to the natural freezingness of our great outdoors, the temps inside the ARC remain positively arctic. SO! The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre and Youth Illuminate are hosting an ARC Warming on Saturday, October 5, (6pm-8:30pm) at the ARC (39 Smith St.) to raise money for a heating system. Deliciously dishyBangladeshiBANGLADESH is a very long way from Glenlyon. In fact, Google Maps had a little meltdown when we asked it to figure out how to get from Bangladesh to Glenlyon. Computer said a resounding “No”. Too bad Google Maps, you’ll miss out on the Bangladeshi Feast planned for Saturday, October 5, at the Glenlyon Hall (Barkly Street). Join Glenlyon local, Rizwana Karim, for a fabulous Bangladeshi cooking class from 2pm at the hall. Here you’ll learn to cook a delicious four course feast, and help prepare the sumptuous menu for the evening’s shared community dinner, (6:30pm).The community feast doubles as a fundraiser for the Rahela Salahuddin Welfare Centre (a very special welfare centre and school in Bangladesh). Saving upfor Daylight Saving

Run for funrun for fundsRUNNING is good for you. This is probably the genius call of the month. Of course running is good for you. It’s great for every single bit of you, your heart, mind and soul. (And your jiggly bits, don’t forget them.) But with a fun-run held seemingly each weekend, running is also good for raising a bit of dough for charity. The annual Run The Maine fun run in Castlemaine raises money for two great causes, the 11km/5km runs are for Castlemaine Health, and the 2km event is the Run for Hannah. (All money from this race goes to Cystic Fibrosis Victoria.) Legs twitching at the anticipation? Of course they are! Run the Maine is on Sunday, October 6, from 7am (for on-the-day registrations). Head to Mostyn Street (near Victory Park). Afterwards there’ll be a street party, and a family-friendly after party at Theatre Royal (Hargraves St). OKAY, SO we might’ve been a little excited about Spring starting last month… perhaps, indeed, 85% of last months’ articles in lost were about the weather… (sorry… it’s kinda a big deal around here when the sun comes out.) But one thing that is possibly even MORE exciting than getting reacquainted with natural Vitamin D, is DAYLIGHT SAVING!! Seriously, let’s pop some corks here… we are EXCITED! Sunday, October 6, is the big day, (or night, or morning, whichever way you like to look at it). At 2am EST wind your clock forward one hour and HEY PRESTO IT’S SUMMER. (We’re calling it. That’s what Daylight Saving really means… SIX MONTHS OF SUMMER BABY!) Sure, just two years ago it snowed in October, but whatevs. We get an extra hour of daylight now, and honestly, that’s all that matters. Roll on the BBQs, inflatable pool toys and mojitos! See you pool side! (We’ll be the ones in the polar fleece bikinis… brrrr.)


175 years Happy Birthday Smeaton!THIS year the town of Smeaton celebrates 175 years of settlement since Captain Hepburn. That’d make this year their Terquasquicentennial year. Oh yes. There is a word for 175th anniversary. Actually there are two… the other is Septaquintaquinquecentennial. Take your pick. 1838 was a long time ago, and there are hints throughout the tiny town of its rich and significant history. To celebrate the big birthday Smeaton is hosting a Back To Smeaton weekend, Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6. There will be open buildings, re-enactments, historic walks and talks and old records to study. On Saturday from midday head to the Smeaton Community Centre. This will be the hub for the weekend. Wander from the Centre to the School, to Anderson’s Mill, or take the hop-on hop-off bus to other venues. The Dinner Dance and formal proceedings will be held at the Community Centre from 6:30pm. Anderson’s Mill will be open all weekend. Bruce Hill will bring his Clydesdales and old wagon from Clunes and unload it at the Mill, and famous chainsaw artist Robby Bast will rev up the Stihl and carve a statue of Capt. Hepburn for the town.Smeaton House is a grand building built by Hepburn in 1849, take a tour and inspect the grounds on Saturday. An art exhibition will be held in the stables of the property, and will be opened by the Hepburn Shire Mayor at midday.On Sunday, the old Smeaton Presbyterian church will host a special 9am service, where the history of the church will be given by Robert Taylor (his grandfather was Rev Robert Grandison Taylor). All the church records will be on display to take a Captain Cook at.Smeaton’s Cumberland Hotel will be a hive of activity, watch the beer kegs being delivered on the old Coopers Brewery wagon, have a look at the old Blacksmith’s shop and pull up a bar stool as so many have before you and toast the early settlers of Smeaton. Guess what Glenlyon… It’s your turn to show us your stuff, at the Glenlyon Show and tell day. Sunday, October 6, at the Glenlyon Shire Hall, (Barkly Street) share your interests, skills, and stuff you love with your community. From 10am till 4pm it’ll be a bit of an expo, with a pop-up shop of gorgeous locally made items for sale. Locals will be showing and telling everyone about weaving, sculpture, gift making, photography, cheese-making, ballroom dancing, in fact, anything anyone cares to share on the day. Try something new, learn something old, come along and share the love. Light refreshments will be available. HATE to burst that fun spring bubble you’ve got going on, but we’re mid-season now, and that little bit o’ sunshine means fire season is on its way. Damn. No need to freak out though, because lucky for us, our community is totally into being prepared for what’s ahead. And there are loads of workshops and info around on how to prep your property for fire season. The Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre is hosting a series of Chainsaw Operation and Maintenance workshops this month, which will have you chainsawing like a pro in no time. The course covers all cross-cut techniques, operator safety, OH&S (kinda important with chainsaws), maintenance and sharpening. Friday, October 11, from 6pm tutor Eric Cahill will cover theory, then Saturday, October 12, and Sunday, October 13, 8:30am-4:30pm, you’ll get into the practical stuff. The Little Churchand a whole lotta loveOoooOoOoooh lovers… now we knoooow. Spring is definitely in the air, love is in the air, a significant amount of pollen is also in the air, but mostly, it’s all about the love. Loved-up couples are popping questions on bended knee, and donning diamonds left, right and centre, (but mostly left… fourth digit) and calling each other (giggle giggle) ‘fiancée!!’ (giggle giggle). Look, if you happen to be floating around in a love bubble custom built for two, good on you. But keep it nice, mind your PDAs and we’ll all get along just fine.Spring is unashamedly wedding season, and this region is a favourite place for couples to tie the knot. Let’s face it, it is gorgeous, the local food and wine is superb, there are amazing photo locations around every corner, hedge, heritage façade and paddock, and there are loads of accommodation options for your guests. And now, there is a new wedding destination on the map… well actually, it’s a very old wedding destination… scrubbed-up and loved-up with a new lease on life! The Little Church at Spring Hill has hosted all manner of ceremonies since it was built in 1890. This super-sweet, classic country weatherboard church is now a part of the Spring Hill Peony Farm. Nicky Thomas and Mac Barry are the new owners of The Little Church at Spring Hill, and welcome all potential brides and grooms to take a look at their lovely little church to see if it would suit their style of celebration.The Little Church and the adjacent pavilion are available to hire for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and all manner of celebrations. Choosing great wine at the bottle shop takes a little practice, and a little knowledge. The best way to pick something winetactular is to try before you buy. The Woodend Wine Store hosts one such winetastic event. A Grand Tasting. This event is a fab opportunity to taste around 200 wines, beers and ciders (bags not driving) from all over the world. This year, A Grand Tasting will be held at The Bentinck (8 Carlisle Street, Woodend) Saturday, October 12, 1pm-5pm. When Frisbeesand penny farthings collideWHAT do fishing, Frisbees, mountain bikes, foot races, photography and penny farthings have in common? If your conclusion was “umm… pretty much nothing” Well done! You are correct. However! Once a year in Creswick, this unlikely combination of activities comes together to form The Brackenbury. The Brackenbury is a weekend of dynamic race events and community activities. With the spirit of the event firmly held in the name of fun and friendly competition, The Brackenbury is a fantastic family tradition. This year it will be held on Saturday, October 19, and Sunday, October 20. On Saturday the program includes the Mountain Bike Challenge – it ain’t called a challenge for nothing - the course is full of history and beauty, but you wont notice a thing when you’re climbing those hills.The Brackenbury Duathalon will also be held on the Saturday, it’s old vs new, Penny Farthings vs Mountain Bikes! The Duathalon was a huge hit in its inaugural year (last year) so it is back for spectators and participants alike. The Frisbee demonstration will be back too, with local Ultimate Frisbee players showing their mad Frisbee skills. Ultimate combines elements of AFL, Soccer and Netball, with a Frisbee. Oh yes this is an actual thing… There are leagues of Ultimate players around the globe (we can even boast that a local Hepburnian is in the Australian Crocs team)!Sunday it’s foot race time with the Brackenbury Classic half marathon, and 5km and 10km events. Sure, running is great, but the Great Southern Penny Farthing Tournament will also be held on this day. Yes. Penny Farthing races. Whilst it seems a little odd to wear lycra and an aerodynamic helmet atop a giant ye-olde bike, they will. (No doubt there’ll be top hats and twisted moustaches too.) Sunday is also the day to try your hand at fly fishing and catch a carp at the Family Fishing Day. Registrations to participate in all competitive events close on Monday, October 14. SensationaldegustationalGOURMET is a word we use in everyday conversation around here. Everyone from the lolly pop lady to the bloke who mixes cement, to the kiddos in the playground discussing their lunch box delights are all about gourmet. So when Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine decided to host a gourmet reader dinner event, of course they chose to do it here. This exceptional one-off degustation will be held at The Argus Dining Room at Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat (124 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) on Saturday, October 19, from 7pm. The menu will be created by their own executive chef David Willcocks and the superstar creative palette of chef Andrew McConnell who (over the years), has been awarded more hats than he has double letters in his surname. SOMEWHERE in the Arctic Circle there is an Eskimo bloke named Joe. He’s probably up there now sitting on a milk crate fishing through a hole in the ice. Little does this Eskimo Joe realise, that the Australian band baring his name is currently touring the land promoting their new album Wastelands. This tour will take in much of Australia, and none of Greenland or Alaska’s outer ‘burbs, but that’s ok, because Joe’s too busy fishing to go to gigs. Every doghas his soufflé IF YOU can train a sheep dog to round up a paddock-full of wayward, dopey sheep and herd them safely through a gate with just a few whistles, then surely you can train a sheep dog to do just about anything. Crochet a granny square blanket? Drive a Formula 1 race car? Whip up a perfect soufflé for your next dinner party? Perhaps trusty ol’ Blue could renovate the bathroom one day while you’re at work? Saturday, October 19, and Sunday, October 20, the best bathroom renovating, soufflé baking sheepdogs will take it to the field in the annual sheepdog trials. On this particular weekend these exceedingly clever pooches will be displaying their awesome sheep-rounding-up skills. (They save the crochet until the Castlemaine Show next month.) JOHNNY Gibson is quite possibly Melbourne’s favourite drummer. A big call, as there are oodles of them, and they come in many shapes and sizes. From double bass drumming speed metalheads to the blokes who lead the bag pipe bands around town, Melbourne has more than its fair share of drummers. Winesdayour favourite day of the weekA BAKER’S dozen is a generous thirteen of something. For obvious reasons we think the Winemaker’s Dozen should be invented. Whilst we can’t wave our magic wand and make this happen, what we can do is proudly spruik the thirteenth annual Daylesford Wine Show. Ooh… thirteen… it’s like a baker’s dozen of wine shows, and surely that counts for something? The Daylesford Wine Show is an important show on the wine calendar. (Yes, there is such a thing as a wine calendar, and yes, Winesday does roll around often.) Local wines from the Macedon Ranges and surrounding wine regions are poured and tasted by a team of expert wine judges with finely tuned palettes and noses that can differentiate raspberry from blackberry and French oak from American. Clever indeed. Trophies (sponsored by local businesses) will be presented at the Wine Awards Dinner, to be held at Lake House: Friday, October 25. You can book a seat at this gala dinner. Canapés and a glass of the winning sparkling will be offered on arrival, followed by a three course dinner, served with the winning wines. The festival circuitjust got goatierEVERY man and his dog is running a festival these days. Mostly involving bands and tents and hipsters and uni students; (insert-‘cute-name-here’-FEST is coming to a paddock/stage/waterfall/showground near you!) Now, most city schools host fundraising fête, raising up to 100 grand in a day. Ch-ching! These uber fêtes/mini festivals have show rides and bars, and bands and schmancy things for sale, and it’s all a bit awesome and wonderful, and, well, schmancy. And good on them. But here in the country we do things a little differently… Bullarto Primary School hosts an annual Goat Festival. Yes! A GOAT FEST! And it is awesome! The school has its very own little herd of much loved goats, and once a year they celebrate their furry bleating pals with a festival held in their honour. (It’s just like Meredith but the rockstars are hairy, bearded animals… ummm hang on a minute…) The kids of Bullarto Primary are super proud of their herd and want to impart their knowledge and show off their goats Sunday, October 27. The Bullarto Primary School Goat Festival will be held at the school (131 Bullarto South Road – just 10 minutes from Daylesford). The Central Highlands Goat Club will be on hand to assist the students and help out on the day, and there will be many stalls of wonderful goat products and great stuff to try and buy. Discover all manner of goaty goodness, there’s a veritable goat supermarket on display (and for purchase). Goat soaps and body creams, fresh milk and goat cream, and other non-goaty stuff too. The Happy Goat café will be serving up delicious goaty treats, like pies and pizzas and sausages and lots more scrumptious country deliciousness. ANY AMOUNT of swing dancing can leave your cheeks flushed a little pink. Too many dancefloor twirls can make you feel a little green, which in turn leaves you red faced. However, on Saturday, October 26, from 7:30pm we’re aiming for a big, bright, healthy, pink glow. Hepburn Shire Women’s Cancer Support Group is holding a Swing Yourself Pink night at the Daylesford Town Hall. The idea of the night is to indeed swing yourself pink, and in the process raise much needed funds for the support group. The Daylesford Swing Band and Kyneton’s Sacred Heart College Show Band will be playing up a storm to get everyone up and dancing. Arrive early (7pm) for a free half hour swing dance lesson from Daylesford Dance to help you swing yourself pink across the dancefloor all night, (and to avoid the afore mentioned red faces.) What’s all this aboutthe Swiss and Italians?THE Hepburn Springs region was settled by Swiss and Italian folk in the 1850s. They came in search of gold, or arrived here after fleeing their homes due to political upheaval and persecution, and stayed because the land reminded them so much of home. Original Swiss and Italian settlers came from Northern Italy, as well as an Italian speaking region in Switzerland. These wonderful people recognised the importance of the abundant mineral springs and spas, and fought for their preservation over the lust for gold. They planted vines, made wine, built buildings still standing today, carved a rich life out of this harsh landscape and helped form the foundations of our multicultural community, and the abundant lifestyle which we still celebrate today.The annual Hepburn Springss Swiss and Italian Festa is a tribute to the early settlers of the region, and a celebration of the region’s history and culture, with a nod to our Swiss and Italian heritage. This year the Festa will be held: Wednesday, October 30, ‘til Sunday, November 3. The program is packed full of food and wine events, film screenings, heritage programs, art, concerts and parties, live music, comedy, a grand parade and family Festa and so much more. Saturday, November 2, The Grand Parade will march, skip and dance along Main Road Hepburn Springs (from the Savoia Hotel to 9th Street, winding its way to the Soundshell at the Mineral Springs Reserve.) This year the theme of the parade is Gold, so everyone involved will surely be sparkling, including the Swiss Matterhorn Yodelers, bands, local schools, kinders and community groups. Follow the parade to the Mineral Springs Reserve for a day of family fun, including spaghetti slurping comps, live music and delicious food (helloooo, you’re in safe hands with the Swiss and Italians). Portraitsof our landscapeIN A town overflowing with artists and art, here’s a little exhibition that toots our horn and floats our boat… The annual Landscape Art Prize and Exhibition is on again as part of the Swiss and Italian Festa. This exhibition and art prize is open to all, but the catch is: the work must represent a landscape somewhere within a 25km radius from the Hepburn Springs Post Office. The exhibition will be held at The Rex Gallery (upstairs at The Rex: 47-53 Vincent St, Daylesford), opening Wednesday, October 30, 7pm-10pm. Award winners will be announced on opening night, with the winner receiving $1000, second $500, and third $250. The exhibition is open to the public daily from Thursday, October 31, ‘til Sunday, November 3. (11:30am - 5:30pm) Entry is free. Made in Italy…you know it’s goodTHE Hepburn Springs Swiss and Italian Festa is our very own excuse to act and feel a little Euro deep in the Central Highlands. Does someone you know own a Vespa? Borrow it for the weekend, tie a scarf around your neck, polish up the oversized Prada sunnies, hoik on some fancy boots and zip up to The Rex Theatre (47-53 Vincent Street, Daylesford) for a screening of some superb Italian Cinema. Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, two recent Italian Films will be screened. Drifters (Gli Sfiorati) (2011) was a standout film at the London Film Festival 2012. This lighthearted drama will be screened at 8pm Saturday and 4pm Sunday. Take It Easy (Scialla!) (2011) is a comedy that has picked up a swag of awards internationally. Juggling meatballsat the sketty circusNATURALLY, great circus feats and pasta should always be combined. Add to this potentially messy mix an audience of children and what could possibly go wrong? We mean, ‘sketty, circus skillz and kiddos is a recipe for an awesome good time is it not?! Last year, the Swiss and Italian Festa hosted a brilliant evening of world class circus shenanigans and super delish pasta for kids, and it was such a crazy fun time that they’re doing it again. Friday, November 1, two of Australia’s most exciting circus performers Luke Taylor (Circus Oz) and Miss Ellaneous will be bringing their hilarious blend of slapstick, feats of super human strength and dazzling dexterity, smart wit, vivacious customer service and general all ‘round hilariousness and awesomeness to the Pavilion at Hepburn Springs. (Mineral Springs Reserve). This clever, engaging show will capture the kids’ imagination, but it’s really a show for all ages, who doesn’t love the circus? The show will be held at the super kiddo friendly time of 4pm – 5pm. (A world class circus show is possibly the best way to end the school week – is it not kids?) …and the pasta is on from 5pm ‘til 6pm. (…just to keep things clean, I mean we don’t want psketty getting tangled up in a balancing act do we?) By 6pm the kids are fed, they’ve had a great time, and you’re on your way home all ready for an early bath and bed. Nice work indeed.
