Still lifewith horse

THERE’S really nothing more grounding than sinking your hands into the earth and squooshing it. The amazing ceramicists and clay artists from Daylesford’s Clayspace Cooperative must feel soooo connected to the earth after spending so much of their lives teasing beauty out of clay. This month they are showcasing their latest ceramic creations at the annual All Hands ceramics exhibition; to be held at The Rex (47-53 Vincent Street Daylesford) on the Melbourne Cup long weekend - Saturday, November 1, until Monday, November 3. Clayspace includes some of Australia’s most talented and respected clay artists and they’ve been getting their hands nice and dirty to put it all together. Their works are unique and beautiful, with many pieces available to purchase. For more info facebook.com/ClayspaceDaylesfordRegionCeramicsCooperative or see what they’re up to at: instagram.com/clayspacedaylesford.

IF YOU find art a little more fascinating than fascinators and if you’ve found yourself in Daylesford for the long weekend - well you’re in luck. The Daylesford Art Show is in full swing right across the long weekend. It’s open until Monday, November 3, at the Daylesford Town Hall, Vincent Street. The Daylesford Art Show is a major annual event for the many uber-talented artists of the region. It is also your opportunity to view and purchase the works, and to be inspired by the wealth of incredibly talented artists and the exciting and diverse works they create. This annual exhibition has been running for almost 30 years and is well regarded as a showcase of some of the finest contemporary art in the state. This year the show will include the Clayspace Ceramics Exhibition, a Sculpture Exhibition and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works as well. For more info go to daylesfordartshow.com.au.

Inner sanctumsand creative sanctuariesTHIS region thrives on a culture of creativity. Artists feel at home here, the earth and sky inspires, the natural environment nurtures their souls and moves our wonderful artists to create. There is such a huge creative community here and once a year some of the artists open their studios for us mere mortals to visit and peek inside the inner sanctums of creativity! The Daylesford Macedon Ranges Open Studios runs for three weekends this month: Saturday and Sunday November 1 and 2, 8 and 9, and 15 and 16. Thirty artists will open their doors to the public across these days and you are invited to meet the artists, see where they create their pieces and perhaps even see some works in progress... oooooh!Printmakers, painters, sculptors, ceramicists, a mosaic artist, a textile artist and hand-crafted photography expert will all be welcoming guests to their studios. With so many artists’ studios open, a great place to start is at the artists’ group exhibition at St Paul’s Church (26 Yaldwyn Street, Kyneton). Each of the artists are featured here so you can get a feel for their work before you go out and visit them. The works at the exhibition are also for sale. Entry to the group exhibition is by gold coin donation. The group exhibition is open on the same dates as the Open Studios, 10am – 5pm each day. The Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Open Studios organisers have developed a great little guide book featuring a brief bio on each of the artists and where you can find them, with maps and addresses included. (Look for the pink flags out on those country roads when you’re on your studio crawl.) Small bus tours are also available - bookings on the busses are essential (phone 0418 105 954 to book.) More detailed information is available on their website at dmropenstudios.com.au or check out their page at: facebook.com/DaylesfordMacedonRangesOpenStudios. Entry to the studios is free.

Yee-har pardnerssee y’all at the fete!THE horsies are out, the roses are out, the Santas are out and the SUN is out! Hello November. WE LOVE YOU! There’s so much great stuff on this month. A classic November thing to do is to visit a school fete. Sunday, November 2, St Michael’s Primary School (29 Smith St, Daylesford) is hosting their school fete. It promises to be a good ol’ country (and western) fair; with a bucking bull ride, (you know you want to…) meet the cute furry things at the petting zoo, take a pony ride, have a go at the sack races, or try your luck at side show alley. Get in early for the most divine treats at the cake and produce stall, load up for spring planting at the huge plant stall, rummage for a bargain in the trash n’ treasure, buy books, delicious food, let the kids go nuts on the jumping castle, (before the food) pull up a hay bale with a great coffee and take it all in. For all the info like their page at: facebook.com/StMichaelsSchoolFete.

Feel the unity in your communityTHE teeny community of Glenlyon (just a few ks out of Daylesford) regularly does cool stuff. Not bad for a village with one shop. Sunday, November 2, they are welcoming new members of the community and celebrating all visitors and residents in a great big Glenlyon Community Day. If you live in Glenlyon, or if you want to learn more about this awesome little hamlet come along from 11am and get involved! The new Biolink Loop Walk will be officially opened and you are welcome to explore it on foot, or bring a bike, saddle up your horse, or bring your dog (and a lead) and complete the loop. Join the community shared lunch, learn a little local history, climb all over a CFA tanker, list what you’re great at on the local skill register, join one of Glenlyon’s awesome community groups (this is what community is all about people!) and give back to this great little village. For more info call Joy Durston: 5348 7542.

So much music for such a tiny townBLACKWOOD is a picturesque little village not too far from Trentham. It’s a town with no mobile coverage, no supermarket and no ATMs. And that’s a big part of what’s awesome about it. Another awesome thing about Blackwood is this month’s Blackwood Festival of Music and Culture. This is a brand new festival to be held Friday, November 7, - Sunday, November 9. It promises more than twenty bands including international acts and a great mix of Old-Time, Irish, Bluegrass, Country, Cajun, Blues and Rockabilly as well as loads of workshops and demos to take part in. This family friendly festival will be held at the Blackwood Recreation Reserve. Limited onsite camping is available. For the full line up of bands and festival activities, camping info and all ticketing go to blackwoodacademy.org. Under 18s free. For up to the minute info like Blackwood Festival of Music and Culture on Facebook.

All aboard!Railfan Day 2014WHAT is it about trains that captures our imagination and fascinates us so? Since our days of nappies and thumbsucking we have built tracks and choo-chooed around the house and waved at those mighty engines chugging/zooming/rattling past. Most people dig trains. Some are quite secretive about it, but some are out and proud train-lovin’ railfans. In Daylesford we have a little train station that used to be a part of the huge Victorian Railways network that eventually linked to Melbourne. Nowadays, Daylesford Station is manned by passionate train lovin’ volunteers. The amazing volunteers at Spa Country Railway restore, maintain and drive the trains so we can appreciate what life used to be like on our little railway, and wave at them appropriately. Each Sunday whilst the Sunday market runs they take passengers through the forest on a vintage train to the recently restored Bullarto Station.Saturday, November 8, Spa Country Railway is hosting a massive Railfan Day (for massive railfans) where they’ll show off to the train adoring crowds their great restoration work on their Diesel Locomotive Y159, DERM 63RM (FYI: DERM stands for Diesel Electric Rail Motor – oh yeah… sooo in the know) as well as Walker Rail motor 91RM and Tulloch railcar DRC40. There will be oodles of photo ops and stops for train fans with the Y159 hauling a typical VR branch goods train to Bullarto and back. The day commences at 9am, with an action packed day on the tracks assured. A BBQ lunch will be on from 12:30 for all ticket holders. The afternoon program runs until 5:30pm, with loads of trains, photo opportunities and a chance to indulge your inner train-enthusiast in a unique railfan experience and to learn more about the history of our little branch line. There are a few ticketing options available priced from $10. For all the details and tickets go to dscr.com.au or show them some love at: facebook.com/daylesfordrailway.

The Swiss and Italian Festaa celebration for allBACK in the days of gold the first Europeans to arrive in this area were people of Swiss and Italian heritage. These people understood the importance and value of the precious mineral water that flows beneath our feet here and they saved many springs from mining exploits and cared for this land as if it was their own, back in the old country. Each year our community celebrates the memory and rich history of these early settlers with the Swiss and Italian Festa. The Festa is a vibrant celebration for the whole community. This year it runs from Wednesday, November 12 ‘til Sunday, November 16, with a huge program of art, music, food and wine, heritage events, exhibitions, open gardens and more. One of the most popular events on the calendar is the Grand Parade and Family Festa. Saturday, November 15, locals and visitors alike are invited to line Main Street Hepburn Springs (from Sixth St to Tenth St) from 10:30am and watch the Grand Parade. This year’s parade will feature local school kids and community groups including the Swiss Matterhorn Yodelers, Manning Imperial Horses, bands and singers and more. The parade is followed by the popular Family Festa at Hepburn’s Mineral Springs Reserve. (11am-3pm). The Family Festa is a wonderful day of delicious food and magical fun with live music, theatre, circus, dance and more. Enter the Spaghetti slurping competition or just picnic with friends under the shade of the Reserve’s wonderful old trees. The much-loved finale to the Festa is the Lantern Parade and fireworks spectacular on Sunday, November 16, from dusk. BYO lanterns and make your way from Tenth Street down through the bush to the Mineral Springs Reserve. This tradition of walking through the bush by candlelight harks back to the 1850s when the goldminers’ only light were little candle lanterns. It’s a beautiful finale to a fantastic week of festivities. The evening concludes at 9:30pm. For more info and the full Swiss and Italian Festa program, go to swissitalianfesta.com.

Stunning daysfor spring fun

I’m in a Glenlyonstate of mind…

HOW good is November? There’s so much on! This time of year there’s almost TOO much on! Really someone should organise a day between Saturday and Sunday so that we can fit it all in. I think we should call it Stunnerday… a perfectly stunning day of no work, just sunshine and happiness and friends. (We at lost are happy to roll this out for you… I think if we get enough groundswell we could do it. What do you think?) Speaking of stunning days… on Saturday, November 8, the gorgeous folk at Castlemaine Steiner School (Cnr Rilens Road and Pyrenees Hwy Muckleford) are hosting a Spring Fair. They’re promising a beautiful day of fun, food and festivity for the whole family. There’ll be amazing activities for littlies and big kids alike, delish food, plant stalls, ponies and fun. The Spring Fair is on from 10am-3pm. For more info go to castlemainesteinerschool.com.au or call the school: 5479 2000.

GLENLYON is a wee village 10 minutes out of Daylesford with one solitary shop…the (very excellent) Old Glenlyon General Store, so to leave the stage in the City That Never Sleeps and to find yourself at The Old Glenlyon General is quite a leap. Meryl Leppard is back from her latest stint in NYC (a part of Meryl’s heart is in NYC, and she performs there regularly) and now she returns to The General for a brilliantly theatrical and magical night of Cabaret, Friday, November 14. Meryl’s voice is arresting, haunting and oh-so authentic. See her perform fresh from the States with Nicolas Lyon on violin. As always Friday nights at the General are free (lucky you!) The Old Glenlyon General Store is at 63 Barkly Street. Like them on Facey for all the latest or give them a buzz for more info: 5348 7922.

Unearthing beautyin the MulchOH MY goodness a new arrival in the family is super exciting! Everyone goes a little ga-ga over the new little one and we all clamber to visit and ooh and ahh and generally go a little loopy about the new member of the family. Well… we’ve gone a little loopy over the new member of the Mulch family. Mulch is a creative living concept store in Daylesford, (12 Howe Street) run by Ty and John, and they have very recently welcomed with open arms their new baby: Mulch at 64 Piper Street, Kyneton. Both stores are housed in historic buildings which co-incidentally used to be bootmakers… which is pretty amazing and awesome.Mulch by Sabato e Domenica (or Mulch for short) are two gorgeous little stores full of boutiquey designer goodness for your home and life… including homeware, bath and body, a bit of stationery and fashion. They stock some really fab local and international stuff, including Le Creuset, luscious Aesop products, The Laundress from New York (fabulous home cleaning and garment care products) Trunk and Orderly handmade cases, BlahBlah kids’ super soft hand knitted cuddly toys, Jonathan Adler stoneware (and his super-great socks) locally made ceramics by Marina Pribaz oh and a little brand by the name of Marimekko… (you might have heard of them). Mulch stocks tableware, gifty things, kitcheny things and napery, as well as baby things by iconic Finnish brand Marimekko. The Kyneton store has a fab range of Marimekko women’s clothing and Daylesford is about to launch it too. (Yayness!) Mulch also stock Alchemy candles (hellooo beakers of heaven) and other housey, homey, gardeny goodness to make you feel like you are totally rockin your life in the country. Which of course you are. Mulch by Sabato e Domenica have also picked up a super spesh international design award for their own label, swing tags and stationery by local gal Sam at Wood Duck Press. So amazing. More info like facebook.com/SABATOeDOMENICA or call in. Daylesford is open Wed-Sun 10:30am-5:30pm and Kyneton Thurs-Mon 10:30am-5:30pm.

but once a yearChristmas cakes

New Italianat the Old Hep.

SO WHICH crazy-organised people do you know who have already made their Christmas cakes? Nana June and Auntie Bev? Yeah, they started soaking their Christmas cake fruit in brandy in March... (well that’s what they told us about the bulk purchases from Dan Murphy’s - we’re onto you Auntie Bev.) Anyway. We figure it’s only November… there’s still PLENTY of time to whip up a wonderful traditional Christmas cake (and everyone will be soooo impressed when you tell them you made it in Spring) The chef at Garden of St Erth (Simmons Reef Road, Blackwood) is hosting a Delicious Christmas Cake workshop, Saturday, November 15, 11am. Learn how easy it is to create your own Cakealicious exotic spiced Christmas cake. Learn baking tips, decorating ideas, take home recipes and stay for tastings and samples of cake. The workshop is $35. More info and bookings call St Erth Garden Shop: 5368 6514 or go to diggers.com.au.

WITH the Swiss and Italian Festival in full swing this month we are all hoping to indulge in a little Italian food, wine and song… (ok ok… a LOT.) Friday, November 14, the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) has a very special evening planned with Kavisha Mazzella taking to the stage. Kavisha is an ARIA award winning performer. She sings in English and Italian (and other languages – yeah, wow!) with echoes of Gypsy, Celtic and Fado influences in her lyrics and musical style. The kitchen at the Old Hep will be flying the Red, White and Green for the night and cooking up an Italian storm especially for the event with an indulgent two course Italian Feast on the menu. Dinner and show is $50 (from 6pm) show only $20 (8pm). Bookings are essential. For more information go to oldhepburnhotel.com.au or give them a call: 5348 2207.

Psychic stories over a beer or twoNOT sure what it is about these parts that seems to attract those with other worldly talents. There’s clearly something in the air, or the water, or both that nurtures psychics’ sixth senses (say that five times fast) making our region a haven for readers, psychics and mediums of all talents. Tuesday, November 18, international psychic medium Alice Terry will be sharing her psychic skill in an evening of mediumship at the Old Hepburn Hotel (236 Main Road, Hepburn Springs).Alice is a medium of the highest order. She has been honing her skill since discovering it when she was seven years old. Her ability is widely known as an extraordinary gift, and she will share her knowledge and stories with everyone (including a bit of audience participation) on the 18th from 8pm. Tickets are $40 and selling fast. Call the pub for more information and bookings 5348 2207.

FUNK is a word you should enunciate correctly in front of your grandmother. Mind you, most grannies would’ve been the original funksters 40 years ago, bustin’ out moves in their hotpants and froes in discos all over town. Go Granny! (OK, relax… most grannies don’t strut around in satin hotpants any more, well, not in public anyway…) Saturday, November 15, DJ Zolly Gold is bringin’ the funk to The Lounge at the Daylesford Hotel (2 Burke Sq) for a night of wide funky tunes that’ll bounce you to the funkosphere. Yes, there’ll be Donna Summer, yes, there’ll be Born to be Alive, and some old gold Jackson Five... sweet funky times kids. Get your funk shoes on (keep it sensible you can’t dance with blisters, just ask Granny…) and head to the Daylesford Hotel from 8pm. Entry $10. For more info on what to eat, drink and do at the pub (oh that balcony on a sunny afternoon!) like Daylesford Hotel on Facey or call 5348 2335.

Picnics and Peoniesperfectly perfectTHERE’S something a little bit magical about a peony flower. There’s a romance to their soft fluffiness. Their perfect pinkness. They’re a little bit precious. They only like to grow in areas that endure a biting winter. They hide snug under frosted ground during winter and emerge in late spring with their delicate flamboyance on full display in the last few weeks of spring. There are only a couple of places in Australia where the peony will grow. One of the greatest benefits of living through a Central Highlands winter is being able to grow peonies in your garden. It’s almost like a congratulatory gift after surviving the months of cold. The Spring Hill Peony Farm supplies farmers’ markets and florists with their spectacular hand cut blooms each spring and for two very special weekends they open their peony paddocks to the public so you can come and pick your own.Saturday, November 22, and Saturday, November 29, Spring Hill Peony Farm opens its gates and welcomes you in for picnics, peony picking and a frolic in the flowers. This is such a treat to visit a working flower farm and pick your own bunches of loveliness. BYO secateurs and sun hats. And don’t forget your gumboots! (As pretty as a picnic in the peonies is... farmers don’t wear heels! It can get muddy in the flowers folks!) Fab local food and drinks will be available to buy – along with a few special treats (…as if picking your own peonies in the field wasn’t already enough of a treat!) The Spring Hill Peony Farm is tucked away on a country road at 1385 Kyneton – Springhill Road Spring Hill. (Look for the signs.) Gates are open 10am – 4pm. Friendly doggies are welcome on a lead. Cut flower sales are also available from the Shed Door throughout November and December (Monday – Sunday, 10am-4pm) Bare root stock (to grow your own) is available in May and June. Roll Up Roll UpThe Show’s coming to town!WE’RE calling it… everyone loves The Show. There’s just something so ace about showbags and huge blue-ribboned bulls and happy show-off sheep dogs, and dodgem cars and sugared-up kids that is irresistible. Small-town shows are the best. They’re a famous tradition, a gathering of people off the land to show their stuff. The Daylesford Show has been running since 1865, (how’s that for tradition!) and is one of the best country shows you’ll see. This year it will be held on Saturday, November 22, from 9am at Daylesford’s Victoria Park. (Ballan-Daylesford Road.) This year expect the usual suspects, that is: all that makes the Daylesford Show so awesome… The best livestock from the region, a renowned horse competition, prize goats, pretty sheep with fancy wool and show-offy poultry. Of course there’ll be an animal nursery, with the cutest little baby animals to meet and pat, the fluffiest little rabbits with the floppiest ears to make you go awww, and all the exquisite handmade/stitched/crocheted/embroidered/ baked and decorated things you wish your Nana taught you. Pet guinea pigs are also invited to enter the show (pedigree not required… just bring them along on the day, no entry forms required). Local schools will also proudly be displaying their colourful works, but it’s doubtful you’ll find the kids there with side show alley in full swing, with dagwood dogs, stomach churning rides, billions of showbags, and what could possibly be the stickiest fairy floss in the world. This year the show is hoping to break with the (annoying) tradition of bad weather, but regardless of rain, hail, or shine (or all three at once… it has happened…) The Show will go on! Entry is $10 Adult, $5 conc/kids, $25 families, $20 prepaid. For more information on entries for livestock and produce find the 2014 revised schedule at daylesfordshow.com. Vote 1Passing CloudsSATURDAY, November 29, is an important day on the Victorian calendar… It’s the day all of us over 18 years of age are expected to line up, take our turn and vote for who we like best… Perhaps you’ll choose the new release Graeme’s Blend, or The Fools on the Hill Pinot? The Chardonnay? The Angel? Or the new release Daylesford Sparkling Chardonnay? Whichever wine you vote as your favourite, you can be sure they’re all brilliant candidates at the annual Passing Clouds Winery Wine Release. This year marks Passing Clouds’ 40th birthday, and to celebrate, the 2014 wine release promises to be the best one yet. This year the Leith boys are releasing their FULL line up of wines on the day. (Hellooo… amazing!) Entry to the release day is free - buy a $10 glass (refundable) on entry, then head up to the cellar door and sniff, swirl and taste them all. Everything will be on the pour by the glass, and of course bottles and cases of the new stuff are all for sale. You can be assured you’ll take home some completely luscious and quaffable, drinkable and cellarable (we made that word up) wines. The Ugly Uncles will be wearing their best Hawaiian shirts and playing up some dancing tunes in the afternoon. As always you’re invited to bring a picnic, and laze away the afternoon with friends and some truly fabulous wine.Local chef Cameron McKenzie will be cooking up a storm for lunch and BBQ fires will also be provided if you feel like a steak with your red wine. The Passing Clouds Wine Release will be held from 11am – 5pm. At the winery at 30 Roddas Lane, Musk. (Less than 10 minutes from Daylesford). BYO designated driver. For more info on the winery and their range of ultra cool climate wines go to the new website: passingclouds.com.au. or facebook.com/PassingClouds.Daylesford.(Oh and… please remember to vote in the State Election too, before you drink… It’s soooo important to tick all the right boxes on the 29th.)

Daylesford Community Fairfrom little things… big things growTHERE’S something a bit special about living in a small town. We look out for each other, pitch in and help when it’s needed, and celebrate together when we achieve something great. A few years ago Daylesford had an empty patch of land on the corner of Stanbridge and Duke Streets, with a small unloved skate park attached. The community banded together and have made the Daylesford Community Park what it is today, with a children’s playground, a community food garden, accessible toilets, a water fountain and paths. And there’s more to come – the future vision for this space includes a shelter and BBQs, a half basketball court and outdoor exercise equipment.Sunday, November 30, the first ever Daylesford Community Fair will be held at the Community Park (Skate Park) from 12pm – 3pm. Come and join the Friends of Daylesford Community Park for an afternoon of food, music, stalls, workshops and activities. There’ll be soccer workshops and a wildflower walk and loads of community groups on site to meet too. Bring a picnic and all your friends to celebrate our great community and share a fun afternoon together. The Community Fair will be held as part of Social Inclusion Week – an important week on the national calendar encouraging engagement and connection within communities. Meet up with friends and neighbours and connect with yours. This is a free event.More information about Social Inclusion Week can be found at socialinclusionweek.com.au. For more info about the Community Fair contact Fiona Robson 0419 538 920 or like/join the Friends of Daylesford Community Park on Facebook for regular updates and monthly Picnic in the Park invitations.

Kilts, tartan and bagpipesHighlanders we are!WE OF THE Central Highlands love a highland gathering. The Daylesford Highland Gathering is a huge event on the local calendar… It’s next month, but we’ll give you the heads up now so you can pop it on yours. Gather your clan Saturday, December 6, and hit Daylesford for a huge day of kilts, tartan and bagpipes commencing at 9:30am with a loud-and-proud pipes and drums parade up Vincent Street, featuring some of Victoria’s best pipers and highland bands. The event continues on at Victoria Park, and is a huge celebration of all things Celtic. Stroll the sea of tartan, watch piping competitions, highland dancing comps, bands, and try some Celtic food. This year the Rolls Royce Club will be displaying some of the latest cars as well as some stunning vintage vehicles too. For all the info go to daylesfordhighland.com.au or like Daylesford Highland Gathering at facebook.com/DaylesfordHighlandGathering.
