    FORMATION OF CROFTBY COMMUNITY GROUP

The Croftby community group (CCG) formed in September 2011 to provide a

forum for the local community to discuss potential impacts related to the

increased pressures from mining interests. A natural evolution for the group was

to use the strong community spirit to look at other ways to proactively maintain

or enhance the agricultural, environmental and scenic assets of the area.

Incorporation of the group was seen

as an important next step, and thisissue was quickly resolved by aligning

the group to the Boonah Organisation

for a Sustainable Shire (better known

as BOSS) which is part of the National

    Landcare Network. In October, Sharon

    Murakami, President, and Julie

    Jackson, Secretary of BOSS,

    welcomed the group to the

    organisation, saying that the goals

and actions of the group are strongly

supportive of the aims of BOSS.

One immediate win for the community group was the securing of funding from

both SEQ Catchments and the Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC) to

commence removal of the insidious Cats Claw creeper along the riparian creek

banks of Teviot Brook adjacent to the bridge at Croftby (image above). The

group also helped SEQ Catchments coordinate with individual landholders that

are participating in the broader SEQ Catchments Healthy Land, Healthy

Creeks: Teviot Brook - Croftby to Mt Alford project aimed at tackling weed

control, erosion and other environmental restoration issues.

The Croftby community group remains focused on representing the community

to help ensure the Croftby area can be protected from unsuitable developments, and at the same time to continue to work with SEQ Catchments and other

stakeholders to attract further funding for revegetation and weed removal

projects, as well as related community forums and training. The group has

already proven to be a powerful means of communication between current

    project.
