HistoryThe PastLocated in the Piedmont –Triad region of North Carolina, the city of Greensboro is steeped in a rich and interesting history. Of-ficially chartered in 1808, Greensboro’s name is rooted in events that took place over two decades earlier. In 1781, General Nathaniel Greene led several regiments of troops in the battle at Guilford Courthouse — one of the most fierce and decisive battles of the American Revolutionary War. Although the British were ultimately successful at holding the field after the battle, the efforts of Greene and his troops resulted in the loss of over one-quarter of Britain’s regional forces — all but crippling the potential for future British campaigns in the area. The city of Greensboro was named to commemorate General Greene’s wartime contribution.

Another favorite son of Greensboro was author William Sydney Porter. Writing under the nom-de-plume O. Henry, Porter produced such notable works as The Gift of the Magi and The Ransom of Red Chief. His significance to the city of his birth is highlighted by a striking, three-piece statue in the downtown area and an exhibit in the Greensboro Historical Museum. Throughout history, Greensboro has also been the backdrop against which many key issues of racial equality have taken shape. During the period leading up to the Civil War, the city’s well-established network of railway systems were often used to help smuggle runaway slaves to freedom in the north. Greensboro is also the site of the legendary Woolworth’s lunch counter where a group of students-turned-political activists, later to become known as The Greensboro Four, launched a sit-in that triggered sociopolitical and media upheaval in segregated establishments all across America.

Though the city developed slowly, wealth generated from the cotton trade and merchandising financed the steady growth of what has now become Greensboro’s vibrant and diverse economy and community structure.

The PresentGreensboro, North Carolina currently holds the distinction of being the largest city in both Guilford County and the entire Piedmont-Triad region. With a population exceeding 240,000 residents, it also ranks as the third most populous city in the state.

Greensboro is a bastion of academia, with such notable institu-tions as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G), North Carolina A&T, Guilford College, Bennett College for Women, Greensboro College and the Elon University School of Law nestled within its limits. The city is also home to several satellite campuses of Guilford Technical Community College – a system recently applauded for its competitive, NASCAR-linked automotive technician programs.

Greensboro plays host to a number of sports organizations, including the Greensboro Grasshoppers club (South Atlan-tic League) and the Carolina Dynamo (USL Premier Devel. League). The Wyndham Championship, one of the oldest national PGA Tour golf events, is held annually at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club.

Greensboro is the location of the corporate headquarters of the Honda Aircraft Company, Lorrilard Tobacco, VF Corp., Volvo Trucks of North America, RF Micro Devices, the International Textile Group and the life insurance division of corporate power-house Lincoln Financial Group. Although traditionally associated with the textile, furniture and tobacco industries, Greensboro’s leaders are attempting to attract new business in the fields of nanotechnology, transportation and logistics.

Downtown Greensboro is currently undergoing a period of stra-tegic revitalization, counting the openings of New Bridge Bank Park, Elon Law School and numerous new nightclubs, shops and housing developments among its most visible development projects. Many of the city’s new projects are in keeping with the existing architectural styles, inspired by cities such as Charles-ton and New Orleans. One such example is Greensboro’s Southside neighborhood. Once economically depressed – it has now been redeveloped in award-winning, neo-classical style.
