JOHOR BARU – Singapore motor-ists driving into Johor will pay nomore than RM50 (S$20), Malay-sia’s Transport Ministry has said.
The cap on the new Vehicle En-try Permit (VEP) charge for Singa-pore-registered vehicles is to en-sure that the levy does not havean adverse impact on tourist ar-rivals, Deputy Transport Minis-ter Abdul Aziz Kaprawi told theNew Straits Times on Thursday.
“The Economic Council willset an amount which is comforta-ble for Singaporeans. Singapore-ans have been enjoying coming toJohor Baru to shop and buy gro-ceries. We don’t want the VEPcharge to hinder them from com-ing to Malaysia,” he said.
Malaysia hopes to decide onthe VEP levy and implement it bythe end of the year, said DatukAbdul Aziz.
The announcement came afterMalaysia’s Sin Chew Daily report-ed on Tuesday that the levy waslikely to be not less than RM50.Mr Abdul Aziz was quoted as say-ing that a fee around that figurewould be reasonable as the Singa-pore dollar is stronger than theMalaysian ringgit.
Malaysia announced on July 16that all non-Malaysian vehiclesentering Johor would be chargedan entry fee, just over two weeksafter Singapore announced that itwould raise foreign VEP feesfrom Aug 1.
Prime Minister Najib Razaksaid the decision came after a re-quest from the state of Johor, which has two land entry points
from Singapore, in Woodlandsand Tuas. Datuk Seri Najib said aportion of the fees collectedwould be channelled to the Johorgovernment.
The VEP was reportedly intro-duced due to the high volume ofSingapore-registered vehiclestravelling to and from Malaysia, the NST reported. The chargewould be levied only on Singa-pore cars for now as Singapore-ans had benefited from the facili-ties in Malaysia over the years,Mr Abdul Aziz told the NST.
Most drivers in Singapore, however, see the levy as atit-for-tat move in response tothe Republic’s decision to raisevehicle entry fees for foreign carsfrom Aug 1. Singapore will in-
crease the fees from $20 to $35 tocurb the growing number of for-eign-registered cars on its roads.
Singapore’s decision had creat-ed an uproar, especially among Jo-hor residents who drive to the Re-public to work and among busi-nesses that regularly send goodsvehicles there.
Malaysia’s move to charge theVEP fee also caused unhappinessamong Singaporean motorists, some of whom said that theywould cut back or consolidatetheir trips to avoid having to paytoo much in entry charges.
Mr Abdul Aziz stressed in theNST report that any decision onthe levy would not be made atthe expense of the Visit MalaysiaYear campaign.
