Entries are now open for the 2016 Rushcliffe 10k which will take place on Sunday 6th March at Rushcliffe Country Park in Ruddington.

The maximum number of entrants is 850 and each year places are snapped up quickly so it is recommended to register now to avoid disappointment.

The 10k run is suitable for all abilities from novices to experienced runners aged 15 and over and will be chip timed. The course involves two circuits of the country park and is off-road (traffic free).

A medal is given to everyone taking part and there are prizes for the winners in various categories.

A 2km fun run is also organised on the day with participants running twice around the lake before heading over the finish line to receive a medal.

The event is organised by Rushcliffe Borough Council in partnership with Rushcliffe Athletics Club and Cerebral Palsy Sport (CP Sport).

Cerebral Palsy Sport is the official race charity and receives £1 from every entry fee.

The charity supports people with cerebral palsy to fulfil their potential through sport – especially children and young people.

Participants will receive their race packs prior to the day but anyone who has not received it a week before the race should email [email protected] or contact 0115 914 8553.

Happy New Year! This year, I’ll be collaborating with other experts,

to bring you the latest and most holistic approach to your skin’s health. I’ll be talking about the major influences on the condition of your skin, backed up by industry experts so that you can make informed choices and hopefully, maintain the momentum on your New Year resolutions.

The food you eat, rest you get, hormones and physical health all contribute to how you and your skin looks and feels, so keep checking in and we’ll help you achieve the healthy goals you set for 2016. Check out my website for my latest blog soothe-therapies.com

This month I’ve got together with Susan Hart, Nutrition Coach. We’re talking detoxification, Something on everyone’s New Year’s list!

What is a detox?A detox is a process or period of time in which one abstains from, or rids the body of, toxic substances by fasting or selective eating. When your body can’t adequately filter out toxins, the cells of the body can’t function as healthily as they should and this gives rise to illness and disease.

How can I detox? You are detoxing every minute of every day! Your body constantly filters out, breaks down and excretes toxins and waste products via the skin, liver, kidneys and gut.

The liver filters the blood, excreting toxins via the kidneys. The kidneys clean and balance the entire body’s blood supply every five minutes!

Do I need an expensive detox kit?No. Susan and I don’t believe its necessary to spend lots of money on detoxing or committing to a specific regime to do what your body does naturally.

But its always good to have a helping hand if it helps you feel that you’re achieving your goal.

How can I help my body every day?You can support your body by following these simple steps. Incorporating these changes into your every day life will soon bring about positive changes in your mood, wellbeing and skin!

Get Your Five a Day We know, it sounds boring but it really is the best boost you can give your body. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants which fight the toxins in your body and help your cells function properly.

They’re also anti-ageing! Aim for at least 5 x 80gs a day; they all contain different vitamins and phyto-chemicals required for good health, so make your plates as colourful as possible. The fibre from fruit and veg also helps the elimination process so toxins don’t sit rotting in the gut causing problems.

Limit Processed Foods If it has more than a few ingredients its processed and that means its full of preservative chemicals and hidden salt and sugar to make it tasty. Anything low fat or sugar free should be replaced with natural foods. Your body loves real food, not man made chemicals.

Consider the processed lifestyles we lead today and what we are seeing - obesity, skin problems and disease in epidemic proportions.

Cut Down on Alcohol and Stop SmokingDrinking alcohol puts your liver (your filter system) under additional strain which means that you might not be getting the best from the good stuff you’re feeding yourself. Enjoy a glass or two every now and then but don’t over do it.

Smoking causes harm to every organ of the body and put you at high risk of a long list of diseases and dangers. It also makes your skin grey in colour and causes deep wrinkles. Every time you smoke, you cause harm, which could be irreversible.

Keep HydratedDrinking water and clear fluids like herbal teas (green tea is especially good) helps the kidneys work effectively and can help keep your ski clear. Urine should be a pale straw colour.

Reduce Portion Sizes and Keep ActiveAll the food we eat at any one meal is generally unnecessary. Stop as soon as you feel comfortably full. Don’t force feed yourself. Put less on your plate and eat slowly, you’ll reduce the strain you put on your body and your waistline! Keeping active improves blood flow through out the body thus helping detoxifi-cation and will improve your overall wellbeing and mood.

When Everything Went Pear-ShapedThis placement was not pre booked. It was mums first baby and she had anticipated on coping alone with dad.

However she had a very long and difficult labour which exhausted her and dad phoned at the end of a difficult first week, asking if I was available to help. Luckily I was between placements so was able to help straight away.

Mum was shattered and finding the whole experience very frustrating and worrying, despite having read several baby books. I was able to give her both practical and emotional support, and provide guidance in baby care, enabling her to gain confidence in caring for her baby herself.

From the initial 5 days a week, we were soon able to reduce the amount of help she needed to 4, 3, and so on, so that by the time I needed to start with the next family she was feeling assured and bonded with her baby girl.

Other examples of the families I have worked with include postnatal depression, complications post c section, bereavement, and mums long-term illness. I have also worked on several occasions with families with older babies where mum has become unwell, for example post appendicectomy and during treatment for cancer.

Double TroubleMum was expecting twin daughters and had asked for my help for the first few weeks, whilst life would be very busy.

The babies were delivered 3 weeks early by section; baby 1 was a decent weight but baby 2 was only 3lbs and would need frequent small feeds in order to gain weight.

It was ‘all hands on deck’ for many weeks, particularly as baby 2 was a poor feeder who required a lot of time and attention.

Mum had a few tears of anxiety during that time; I hope I was able to be of some comfort to her, but we also had many laughs at the antics of the little ones as they got older. Instead of the 6 weeks I was initially booked for I actually ended up helping for 5 months, and still keep in touch with the family 4 years on.

C Section HelpMum knew she would have her second daughter by caesarean section before the birth and had asked me to help as she felt she would like another pair of hands to assist with 2 children.

Her own parents worked full time, and her in-laws were in poor health so no help was readily available from family. The birth went as planned, and with my help she was able to rest frequently, and so fully recover from the birth quite quickly.

She also had time to establish breastfeeding, as I was able to entertain her toddler whilst she concentrated on baby, but she was also able to spend time with her older daughter whilst I looked after baby, ensuring that she felt secure in mums love and attention.

A Helping HandDuring the 15 years I have worked as a postnatal doula I have helped many lovely ladies and their families, and had many different experiences, mostly happy but some challenging and sad. Below are some examples of the circumstances where I have been needed.

Tracy is a Postnatal Doula (TaylorMaid Doulas) who helps mums after the birth of her baby. She is also a Night Nanny, offering respite to exhausted parents, and a Sleep Consultant helping children with sleep problems.

This month we hear from Adam Rodda. If you are inspired by his story then you can donate via www.gofundme.com/95bcqxd6

Hi there!

My name is Adam Rodda, A 21 year old Law student from Nottingham Trent University.

I have been accepted on to the Volunteer Eco Students Abroad Program and will be travelling to Ecuador in June 2016 to take part in an important sustainable community development project.

I am seeking sponsorship to enable me to participate in the program and complete essential volunteer work in an Ecuadorian village.

VESA and myself will work with the villagers and the village chief in addressing the major issues faced by the village and the local schools such as a lack of fresh running water, dilapidated schools and generally poor infrastructure.

Your donation will help to facilitate the means for implementing a major community development project, which will encompass construction in addition to educating the community on matters of conservation, sustainability, health/hygiene and English proficiency.

By sponsoring me you will be directly assisting with the costs involved in participating in the program. These costs are significant and include hiring local skilled trades people to supervise and assist in the building projects, building materials and donations to local organizations.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to make a difference donating my time and energy into volunteering overseas this summer. If you are able to help, even in the smallest way it would be greatly appreciated.

If you are a local fundraiser and would like to feature in an upcoming edition please email over your details to [email protected]

LAWNS & LANDSCAPING byJOHN F. BARNES

he first faint flush of new growth during this time of year is an indication that spring is on its way. Feeding and

mulching the garden take high priority, along with completing outstanding planting.

As we spring clean our homes, most gardens also could do with the same treatment. Beds should be cleared away of debris such as leaves. Hoe in between plants giving air to compacted areas of soil.

Many shrubs should now be pruned to keep them shapely and encourage new growth. Water well after pruning.

Now is a good time for new planting as the soil should be soft and more manageable. Pots can be cleaned and greenhouses tidied.

Roses Roses, especially rose bushes could be pruned now. Dead, dying or diseased wood should be cut away and removed. Remove spindly or twiggy growth, cutting right back to the main stem. If left unpruned, it will conjest the plant, impede good air circulation and divert energy from plumper, more productive shoots.

Lawns Turfing can be done around this time as the damp, sometimes wet conditions are ideal. Lawn work programs can start now. Rake your lawn to remove leaves and surface rubbish.

Do not rake too vigorously at this stage or you will damage the grass. Use a weed/moss killer if necessary. March is a good time to begin mowing your lawn again.

Thanks again readers, Keep on digging!

“Don’t rush to the sales, consider all the hidden treasures in your wardrobe ”

Style Resolutions

ow is the time to make a list of all those important style specific resolutions for your new year. Some of us may be

considering a new inspiration look for 2016, so here are some tips to consider!

Wardrobe Maintaince - Take time to look carefully through your wardrobe. Clear out clothes that don’t fit you, clothes that have holes or stains and those that have been worn to death. This is a great time to donate some of them to your local charity shop.

Lingerie - Go through your underwear drawers and get rid of your white underwear that has gone grey or any lingerie that has discoloured.

Throw out bras and pants that have been worn to death. All tights and stockings that have holes or hold ups that have lost their firmness put them straight in the bin! Tidy the drawers and put into white, black, nude and coloured.

Shop Your Wardrobe - Don’t rush to buy at the sales, instead of hitting the store sale racks or online shopping yourself into debt, consider all the hidden treasures in your wardrobe.

We’ve all got items we haven’t worn in months that can be refreshed. There might even be some threads with tags still on them hiding amongst the madness.

Take a deep dive into your wardrobe and be pleasantly surprised with what you find. Remember if you are tempted to buy a bargain only invest in a staple piece of clothing that will mix and match with what you already have in your wardrobe such as a camel wool coat, a leather jacket, or a pair of jeans.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize - Use your jewellery more actively, change them to complement your outfits. Wear the pieces you received for Christmas with older ones such as earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets.

Think Before You Buy - Try and avoid frequent and impulsive purchases and serial returns. Consider independently owned shops for a different experience.

Price ranges can be vastly different but it will make you think more about what you are buying. Do I have something like this already? Will it work with my existing wardrobe? With this strategy you will own some high quality pieces and less likely to have a wardrobe full of clothes that cannot be worn together.

And for those who suffer from resolution anxiety, try for smaller more attainable goals. Dressing better in the new year, shopping less and spending wisely on investment pieces and of course planning outfits and dressing better on a day to day basis.

f your nutrition isn’t as comprehensive and full-on as your training then you will be self-sabotaging your potential results.

Note: the concept of ‘building muscle’ is relevant to the average exerciser who would usually use the term ‘tone’ and is not interested in a change in size (bulk)- as well as relevant to the body builder and professional athlete who may want increased muscle size!

So if you want to support your training and optimise your muscle recovery, growth and performance in 2016 then consider using some of the following foods:

Sunflower Seeds - A great source of protein, and packed full of muscle building nutrients as well as vitamin E - a potent antioxidant that can prevent free radical damage after heavy training.

Mackerel - The omega-3 fats in mackerel reduce protein breakdown after a workout. This is important to ensure the balance between protein storage and protein breakdown is tipped in your favour!

Pineapple - Rich in a protein-digesting enzyme called bromeiein which reduces the post- training muscle and tissue inflammation making it an ideal post-training snack!

Venison - This lean antlered meat is high in protein and vitamin B12, without which your body cannot utilise protein effectively. Effective utilisation means more muscle!

Full-Fat Organic Milk - A glass of the full-fat is rich in CLA (conjugated Linoleic Acid) which reduces fat and preserves muscle tissue, (The Journal of Nutrition).

Red Peppers - These are rich in vitamin C which acts as a powerful antioxidant and aids muscle recovery by preventing free-radical damage. The red ones contain 60% more vitamin C than their green equivalent.

Turmeric - Scientists at the University of Medicine in Alanta found that curcumin (the active ingredient in Turmeric) triggers cell growth, thus promoting muscle repair and growth making it very useful in injury and for optimising training.

Almond Butter - A great protein punch to add to food! Try it on sliced apples, rice cakes, banana, wholemeal toast or bagels...It’s rich in magnesium which aids muscle contraction.

Spinach - Greens are crucial and especially spin-ach as its a source of octacosanol, a substance which has been shown to increase muscular strength and endurance. It’s also high in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant.

Tahini - Made from sesame seeds, Tahini is loaded with zinc, which plays a significant role in cell growth, DNA and protein synthesis!

Turkey - This white meat is stacked full of glutamine, an amino acid found in muscle tissue which increases protein synthesis. More protein synthesis means more potential muscle development.

Make sure you are as disciplined with you food as you are with your training and achieve your fitness aims in 2016!

MUSCLE BOOSTINGFOODSAs opposed to the usual ‘get fit in January’ approach I decided to leave that to others and instead have listed below some food for thought...
