Greetings,I hope everyone had a good
Christmas and had a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing all of you in Denver, at Iowa Winter Beef Expo, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic and every sale in between.
I was out making herd visits the other day when my over sized tummy told me it needed food. I was close to Adel and just left a Hawkeye Breeders visit and was wondering who I could eat dinner with. Now, keep in mind, I’m not much of a sandwich man, but this noon sand-wich really hit the spot. I mean it was deadly!! “The Les Burger,” if you don’t just love this sandwich you just ain’t human! “The Les Burger” consists of a 1/3 lb burger; and a Cadillac burger I must say, made from ribeye tips plus ham, cheese, homemade onion rings, and special barbeque sauce. A deadly

Fancy show heifers • Powerful herd sire prospects • Bulls for leading commercial producers • Donor quality females • ShorthornPlus bulls & heifers • Flushes
A recent computer run of the Sire Search in the Angus Sire Evaluation Summary, shows that 19 bulls in the Main Sire Summary are over +.40 for Milk. Some very popular bulls make this list. There is considerable disagreement among breeders as to whether this is a problem or not. I see some ads where these high milk figures are being promoted as being a good thing. But on the other hand, I talk to breeders who are concerned that this high of a milk EPD will lead to problems, such as failure to rebreed, lack of fleshing ability, and various bad udder situations. Any of these will cause culling from the herd.
Another problem is that a breeder can make a decision based on certain EPD’s. Then that breeder mates some of his cows based on
that decision, only to find the bull he bred cows to, in this case, jumped up 11 points for milk and is now on the over +.40 milk list. Those cows will not calve for another 3 months. I’m not too happy because these cows are my cows. Oh well, just one more problem to deal with. I’ve always said when one is in the purebred cattle business, one doesn’t need to go to the casinos, you’re already gambling more than most people without driving out of your own yard.
On top of the above listed problems, there is yet another problem you probably haven’t even thought could be happening. Listen to this sentence from a report by Rick Rasby, Beef Specialist, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, “Cows bred for a high level of milk production have higher nutri-ent requirements even when not lactating.” In other words, you are not only paying for that high milking ability for the six or seven months she has a calf on her, but extra for the remaining months while she is dry. In addition, feed requirements in the feedlot were greater for the offspring of dams that had higher milk potential. If this is correct, one could expect sires of calves to contribute in the same way. There is no doubt in my mind that it worked this way with the 35 bulls I had at a feed efficiency test last winter.
If cows are asked to produce in a lush environment, then cow size and level of milk will be of less concern, but cow size will go up, to a level where they are hard to settle when feed is short. If feed resources are limited, cow weight and milk production will need to be carefully scruti-nized for impact nutrient requirements, but for also feed intake. For this very reason, many ranchers in the West run yearlings with their cow-calf herd when feed is abundant, then pull the yearlings when feed starts to get short.
So how big should your cows be and how much milk should they give? It depends, Rasby writes. Match cow size
and milk level to your feed resources.“From an economic standpoint, the greater number of cows that
can be grazed on a given forage base and meet their nutrient needs from the grazed resource base, the greater the profit potential of the enterprise,” Rasby says.n

How do the VITA HAIR™ Nourishing Vitamins work? Biotin vitamin is the first vitamin thought of when considering HAIR GROWTH. The major benefit of Biotin is its ability to strengthen both the hair follicle and
the hair shaft, where the hair is produced, which prevents hair breakage and dryness. This is a scientifically proven crucial step in the natural hair growing process. One of the chief things that slows hair growth is damaged hair. Biotin enriched hair has increased elasticity of the cortex which prevents breakage. This enableshealthy, FASTER HAIR GROWTH. Biotin also thickens the actual hair cuticle providing a fuller appearance.
Pro-Vitamin B-5 is considered the king of all HAIR CARE vitamins. Pro-Vitamin B-5 stimulates healthy scalp circulation which leads to improved hair health. It coats the hair and seals its surface, lubricating the hair shaft making the hair shine. It possesses superior long term moisturizing properties because of its uniqueability to penetrate and nourish the hair shaft.
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that stimulates circulation to the skin and supports capillary growth. The skin needs to have proper circulation in order to keep thehair follicles alive and thriving. When there are more capillaries, the circulation improves leading to increased nutrient absorption into the hair follicles, whichspeeds hair growth.
VITA HAIR™ is an advanced nutrient package that infuses the hair with proven hair vitamins for ...• Faster Hair Growth • Thicker Hair • Increased Shine • More Body & Volume • Healthier Skin • Improved Nutrient Absorption

3-5 hours a day. If you consider the amount of time that it takes to fit your calf and show it, and then if you have the fortunate opportunity to be asked to come back for the championship, it would be at least 4-5 hours. If your calf is not accustomed to standing this long, then com-ing to the championship class, it will be lazy and want to lay down. It’s top will be sagging and it will be hard for it to keep it’s head high enough to look it’s best.
Next, while you are working with your calf at home, set it’s feet and encourage it to stand in the set up position. Then, when you get to the show ring, it will walk into the show position and stand locked in. Practice using the show stick and walking it in to the show stance. Have someone help you determine how you need to set the feet, so your animal looks the best. Then give them the halter so you can take a look for yourself, from the judges point of view.
Always, always, always, lead your animals with their head high to get them to achieve the look you desire. Even if you are going to the wash stall or ging back to your stall.Watch someone lead your calf, with the show halter on it, to determine what speed you need your animal to walk, and this will allow you an opportunity to size the show halter and give them a feel for it. Play music in your barn so they become accustomed to the loud speakers and won’t get startled at the first show.
While at the show:As soon as you step off the trailer, people start evaluating your
calf and your program. If you have someone else set up your stall, wash, feed, clip, fit, and just generally take care of everything for you, people will know who does the work with the animal. While you are at the show you are marketing your calf. You will likely go into the ring one or two times, but there are many people in the barns that may want to buy the animal you are showing. If it is a bull, someone may want to buy semen someday, so you need to have them clipped and looking good the duration of the show.
Exercise is so important for your animal. It will keep them from getting stiff, it will help their appetite, and it will help them to be in control in the show ring. Get up early. This will give you the time you need to get your animal washed, dried, fed, and able to lay down and relax a bit before the show.
Watch a class before you enter into the show ring so that you can see how the judge is working the ring. This way you’ll know what to do when you get into the ring. Also, you will know who the judge is and who to pay attention to when you walk into the ring. First impres-sions are huge! Really, every class is showmanship, you always want to pay attention to where you are going, your calf, and the judge as much as safely possible. Make eye contact with the judge, as much as possible, and answer questions while looking the judge in the eye. Speak clearly and confidently. Be prepared to answer questions, like birthdate, breeding, how many pounds of feed is your calf eating (not how many gallons or scoops), what kind of feed are you feeding, what is the weight or rate of gain on steers.
Leave space when walking around the ring, so that your animal can move out properly, leave space when setting your calf behind or next to another. A good rule is a length of a show stick.
Dress professional and not distractive, you are there to show the calf not yourself. Act professional, after all it is only one person’s opinion in the ring, but there are hundreds watching you outside the ring. Have respect for the judge.
Show to win! If you go into the ring with the attitude that you are going to get beat, chances are you are going to. Enter into the ring with the attitude that you are going to win. That way you will try your hardest. If you have done the work and your homework, then you will have the much needed confidence it takes to be successful!
DO YOUR BEST AND LET GOD DO THE REST!Wishing you A Prosperous New Year!
See you on the show road,Chuck and Karen McCullough

ShowmanshipIf we were to sum
up in one word what showmanship is, it would be marketing. In order to market a product you need to know every possible thing there is to know about that product. You have to be willing to realize the strengths, so you can expand on them, and then you have to be aware of the weaknesses, so you can correct or reduce the problems.
showmanship - the ability to present some-thing in an attractive manner; Showmen aim to display goods with tact in order to sell an object or a show. Companies producing drama and entertainment claim that displaying fairness is necessary. the skill of making an artistic performance distinctive, effective and appealing to an audience.
We believe that showmanship begins at home. The amount of time you spend working with your animals, will pay off in the show ring. Some things that you can do at home to improve your chances of doing well at the show are:
Tie your calf with its head high in the show position for at least

I can’t even think of one semi-smart thing to say about a cow this month. After barely surviving another challenging fall season, I believe the wheels in my head may need more than just a little grease. It’s a little late to talk about ultra-sounding spring calvers. We won’t ultrasound many fall calvers for another month or so. We’re also in be-tween breeding seasons so you would think it would be a great time for a vacation to some tropical island. Well, much to my wife’s dismay, there’s still plenty to do and since she’s 7 months pregnant we really shouldn’t travel that far anyway. So, I guess we’ll just stick around
Adair and wait for our litter of vizsla puppies to be born. That’s right, we’re expecting lots of babies around the Muller household the next couple of months. And yes, both pregnancies were planned, just not very well thought out. I guess as it turns out, I’m a little better at plan-ning calving dates for cows than I am for my wife or dog.
So as most or you have your cows on stocks and auto-pilot for just a little while longer, start thinking about any carcass scanning you might need to get done for your spring sales. Of course, if you freeze brand, now is a perfect time to get that done while it’s still cold out. Oh yeah, don’t forget about that donor cow that you wanted to get flushed before calving season starts. I wasn’t going to say anything about cows, but now is a great time to get ahead or at least catch up on your cattle to-do list. I hope all of you had a great Christmas and I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year. - Toby n

The Nichols family started in the purebred Angus business in 1953 and the Simmental business in 1968. We’ve always been the leader in new tech-nology— Performance testing (1956) - Cer-tified Meat Sires (1961) - Expected progeny differences EPDs (1977) - Ultrasound (1989) and DNA genomic profiles (2005). Nichols Bulls remain the best investment in the beef business. They sire soggy heavy calves that top the market, gain in the feedlot, and grade in the packing house. Nichols Bulls also sire durable, docile, problem free daughters that thrive on fescue pastures. Our customers range from large ranches to family farmers to producers who work in town. We appreciate and service all of them. Join us at the farm for Opening Day of the bull-buying season. Have lunch and get first chance at our yearling bulls that will improve your herd and put money in your pocket.

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things
by evan Rayl
Cattle have been blamed for a multitude of things, such as cancer, strokes, heart attacks, and the list goes on and on, but this one will shock you. A pilot was trying to land his single engine Cessna 172 at a private landing strip beside a golf course. As the pilot was making his approach for landing, he noticed two cattle standing right in the middle of the run-way. So the pilot made a low pass over the cattle to drive them away. He then circled the end of the strip and came back to land, but the plane was caught in a strong crosswind and a tailwind, and didn’t touch down until more than half way along the airstrip. Seconds later, the aircraft briefly lifted off the ground, turned left and stalled before crashing nose-first into a mound on the golf course. The pilot died from injuries in the crash. Two passengers setting in the backseat were severely injured, but survived. The two cattle left the scene of the accident long before it occurred, but it was their fault. Thanks to the New Zealand Herald for use of this infor-mation.
All great change in America begins at the dinner table.
37 GOP Senators introduced a bill that would force President Obama to approve the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to U.S. refineries within 60 days. Never mind Republicans don’t have enough votes to pass such a bill. Obama, on the other hand, doesn’t want to rule on the project until after the 2012 Presidential Election, afraid that he would offend either labor or environmental groups. The good news is that TransCanada has agreed to go around the Ogallala Aquifer (a valuable source of drinking and irrigation water), although we don’t know the exact route at this point. This route is important to farmers & ranchers. Most certainly more of the pipeline will be in South Dakota and a portion of it in Northeast Nebraska with the new route. Another option, sometimes mentioned would be a pipeline in Canada to the west coast, where the unrefined oil would surely end up in China. The U.S. hopes this does not happen.
Freedom is one of the deepest and noblest aspirations of the human spirit.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has come under criticism for its failure to support local pet shelters and local humane
societies. A recent report by HumaneWatch, a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom, determined that HSUS gives less than one percent of its annual budget to local groups---totaling $527,000 over the last three years---despite raising more that $120 million annually. In response, HSUS argues that it is unfair to hold it accountable for not supporting pet shelters, because that is not part of its mission. HSUS President Wayne Pacelle says that HSUS’s mission is to tackle “the large-scale cruelties beyond the reach of local shelters.” That is nothing but an art-ful dodge. HSUS is fully aware that 71 percent of Americans believe it is an umbrella organization representing the nation’s local pet shelters. Besides, HSUS openly exploits this misperception with advertisements and fund raising materials clearly intended to give the deceptive impres-sion that a significant portion of HSUS’s activities support the direct care of homeless pets.
I don’t believe in a government that protects us from ourselves.
U.S. Premium Beef LLC (USPB) and National Beef Packing Company LLC (National Beef) have announced that the owners of National Beef have entered into a Membership Interest Purchase Agreement with Leucadia National Corp. (Leucadia) under which Leucadia will acquire approximately 79% of the outstanding ownership interests in National Beef. The operations and management structure of National Beef will remain unchanged. “This transaction will enable us to address the liquid-ity desires of USPB’s diverse producer ownership base while maintaining our highly successful cattle supply system and a sizable investment in beef processing,” Steve Hunt, CEO of USPB, said in making the announce-ment. “Leucadia is a diversified holding company engaged in a variety of businesses; its broad and deep experience will enhance our partnership. Our goals for the future of National Beef are aligned and we look forward to a long and successful partnership.” Tim Klein, president and CEO of National Beef will continue in that role. The transaction is subject to certain conditions and will require customary regulatory approvals. The changes are expected to close by the end of calendar year 2011.
People don’t start wars, governments do.
Out in the country with cattle at historic high prices cattle rustling is very prevalent. Meanwhile, beef and Irish whiskey are at the top of the barrel in grocery stores and supermarkets for sticky fingered shop-pers looking for value, but the most stolen single product for shoplifters is cheese. Shoplifting has become so common, one in every 11 people who enter a retail store are likely to leave with one item they did not pay for. That amounts to estimated losses for retailers of $119 billion this year. Most shoplifters are adults---most have jobs. And 35 percent of losses will occur with the aid of a corrupt employee. Other popular items to steal are: electric tools, such as toothbrushes and power tools; elec-tronic gadgetry, such as smart phones, video games and laptops; shaving products; AXE deodorants and body washes; designer apparel, such as Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger; Let’s Rock Elmo, the furry red Muppet’s new product, sold at Toys”R”Us; expensive fragrances, such as Chanel No. 5; and brand name athletic shoes, such as Nike.
The best minds are not in government. If any were, businesses would hire them.

Shirley and I were thrilled to be in attendance at the baptism of Independence June, baby daughter of Ray “Bubba” and Maria Sorensen at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, IA on December 11, 2011. The sponsors for “Indy” were: Heidi Sorensen-Sloth and Mandi Eisbach, sisters of Bubba and Mario & Gabe Galanakis, brothers of Maria. Many relatives and friends, as well as the normal Sunday morning congrega-tion were on hand for the ceremony, as well as the regular church service, featuring four Christmas selections by the Emmanuel Handbells. Pastor Steven Broers conducted the service. Little Indy is the granddaughter of Mike and Dixie Sorensen, Greenfield, IA. Mike is the Publisher of Livestock Plus. Their son, Bubba annually paints the Freedom Rock, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iowa, located just south of Interstate 80 on Highway 25. Bubba and Maria have a studio at the Junction of Highways 25 & 92 in Greenfield. While you don’t know on just which pages, Bubba’s artwork appears several times monthly in Livestock Plus as just one of many projects he undertakes. n

Tentative Schedule
We need a logo. Our ideas include using the State of Minnesota, perhaps a banner of some
sort and would like to include a silhouette of a heifer or bull. We need to keep everything
general, nothing that specically relates to the Angus Association.
The logo should be easy to add to a variety of things.
Name for the event is:

Sale and Agribition (keep in smaller letters)
Potential color ideas
We are not sure what would bring the most attraction.
We want something that will stand out, easily reorganization and something
would be able to be used throughout the event.
Maroon and Gold Often used for MN colors of the University might confuse with U activities

Gavin Richards, 11 months old, loves standing at the pasture fence and yelling to the cows. He is pictured here with “Tori” the shorthorn
cow. Gavin is the son of Levi and Kayla Richards.
Well, it is officially winter and I am officially ready for spring! I hope everyone enjoyed friends and family throughout the holidays! I am so enjoying my nieces! I even received the honor of becoming a Godparent to one of my nieces, Indie. My other niece, Izzy, announced to her parents, “Uh huh, Aunt Heidi said so.” Is it bad how much I get a kick out of getting under my sister’s skin?
Taylor and I attended the Iowa Cattlemen’s Convention in Des Moines last month. It was a great turn out this year and I always enjoy catching up with friends! Taylor provided a little entertain-ment walking through the booths singing Christmas songs and taking random magazines to Brand X’s booth. She also enjoyed getting spoiled by fellow exhibitors and attendees. Mindy Campfield, payback…that is all I am say-ing!!! Seriously a two year old does not need two bags of M&Ms!! The Iowa Cattlemen deserve a big THANK YOU for all they do!
While we were at the convention, Tucker was at school and got picked up by Mrs. Judy Raasch. A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Raasch who is so amazing with my kids and helps me often, they love her dearly. The day of the con-vention she took him to hang out with Aunt Ria, Uncle Bubba and Indie. Ria called and told me he just sat and talked to Indie for a good hour after school, not leaving her side. When I picked Tuck up he proceeded to throw his aunt under the bus telling me about the chocolate popcorn, oreos and one sucker she let him “snack” on. I think both of my kids made out pretty well that day! Thanks again Ria!
Please remember our military men and women in your prayers! Travel safe!
You may recall, in November, that I put out the word that I was searching for some easy recipes to try. Here is one submitted by Rex and Judy McDowall that really sounds great!
Limousin Beef Stew3 lbs cut up browned round steak/stew meat etc.4-6 chopped/diced carrots1 large chopped onion1 can of mushroom and juice1 can of peas and juice1 large can of tomatoes- mashed1/4 cup of minute tapioca3-4 stalks celery2 bay leavesSalt and pepper and parsley to tasteBrown meat, mix all ingredients together, put in large roaster.
