Liturgy: The Work of the People By Tree Gorman, Director of Music and Liturgy What is Liturgy and what does is mean for us as Catholics and as Christians? The term "liturgy" literally in Greek means "work of the people," but a better translation is "public service" or "public work". We are called into community to serve one another in the act of worship through a sacrifice of prayer, thanksgiving (Eucharist), and almsgiving. We are familiar with this idea most clearly because it is the focus of so much of what we do during Lent, but what we do in Lent should simply be a larger, more intense picture of what we do the rest of the year. In this third and last article in the series I focus on the: Sacrifice of Alms and Tithes: What do we give in return for the good that God has done for us? The origin of giving back to God is as ancient as the Bible itself. Cain and Abel famously argue over who has truly brought the best of the first fruits of their gifts and talents. The book of Leviticus actually outlines the parameters of what the Jews called the First Fruits Offering. In Corinthians Christ himself is referred to in this way: But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. (1 Corinthians 15:20) Christ himself was an offering of the very best of all that God had! The First Fruits Offering was a major festival in Jerusalem and probably mirrored our own celebrations of Harvest time. At this time everyone brought sacrifices of the best they had before the Lord. Furthermore, there was a mandate that the fields be left with some food after the Harvest for the poor and the stranger: “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap all the way to the corner of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not pick your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger; I the Lord am your God. You shall not steal; you shall not deal deceitfully or falsely with one another.” (Leviticus 19:9-11) (continued on the next page) St. John Vianney Church 1650 Ygnacio Valley Road Walnut Creek, CA 94598 (925) 939-7911 ext. 0 Welcome Saint John Vianney Parish is a community of faith, hope and love. Liturgy: The Work of the People By Tree Gorman, Director of Music and Liturgy What is Liturgy and what does is mean for us as Catholics and as Christians? In this third and last article in the series I focus on the:

Sacrifice of Alms and Tithes: What do we give in return for the good that God has done for us? The origin of giving back to God is as ancient as the Bible itself. Cain and Abel famously argue over who has truly brought the best of the first fruits of their gifts and talents. The book of Leviticus actually outlines the parameters of what the Jews called the First Fruits Offering. In Corinthians Christ himself is referred to in this way:

Christ himself was an offering of the very best of all that God had! The First Fruits Offering was a major festival in Jerusalem and probably mirrored our own celebrations of Harvest time. At this time everyone brought sacrifices of the best they had before the Lord. Furthermore, there was a mandate that the fields be left with some food after the Harvest for the poor and the stranger:

So, not only are we asked to give a portion of what we are able to provide back unto God, but we are asked to also allocate a bit of what we have for the poor and the stranger in our midst. By now you may be asking how this relates to the Liturgy.

In the context of the Liturgy we ritualistically offer up bread and wine that represent fruit of the earth and the vine combined with the work of human hands at the presentation of the gifts. But remember we also offer up a collection of monetary and food tithes to be used for the service of God and for the work of the Community. I have heard ushers from almost every parish I have ever visited describe how uncomfortable it is to ‘shake people down for money’ and yet this is a very big problem of perception. If we are being ‘shaken down’ are we actually offering what we have from a full and grateful heart? Are we freely giving up and truly giving what we have received back to God? And if we feel in helping to collect this gift that we are in fact the ones being asked to ‘do the shaking’ are we in fact viewing this as simply money to keep the lights on? It is truly not about lights or even programs, but about helping others contribute in whatever way they are able towards the work of God’s Church. In this way what we offer as an act of Worship is truly the work of the people! This is Liturgy in its purest form; it is the pure potential for all of us to act in whatever way the community needs to grow and serve. How do you ritually give back with a full and grateful heart?

Blessing from the Faith Formation Team Summer Blessings

Take time to claim your strength; they are gifts of God.

Take time to have fun; it's God's way of teaching you your strengths.

Take time to grow yourself; only you can grow you.

Take time to trust yourself; God trusts you.

Take time to be self-reliant; it is better than being dependent.

Take time to share with others; they will bless you, and you will bless them.

Take time to have hope, you are a child of God.

Let's put ourselves into the hands of the Lord, and pray that God will bless us and our families during the wonderful months of summer. May we all help make our home a place of relaxation, joy, love, peace and safety. May we be generous and considerate, not thinking only about ourselves, but helping others enjoy the blessings of a summertime.

Lord God, Creator of all things, guide our steps and strengthen our hearts, during these months of summer and vacation days. Grant us refreshment of mind and body.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. (Author Unknown) Are You Searching For Something or Someone? Sometimes in our life journey we know something or someone is missing yet we cannot put our finger on what is missing. So we fill our life up with stuff. We clutter our life with things of little or no value. Yet we still feel like we are missing something or someone. If you feel this way or maybe know someone who feels a longing or yearning for more, please come join us. Whether you are a non-Catholic or know someone who is …whether you are a lapsed Catholic or know someone who has left the Church for whatever reason… Come join us. Or maybe you missed the Sacrament of Confirmation or know someone who is not confirmed. Come join us. Our Inquiry Sessions are opened to all who seek to have a deeper relationship with God. God is always there waiting for our returning. Are you ready to find God in your life?

Join us on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm in the Mullen Commons lower level Room 3. For information contact Anna at [email protected] or call 939-7911 x 107.

Register for Classes The Faith Formation office is processing registrations for 2015-2016 Faith Formation classes. Elementary classes fill quickly so early registration is important if you have a favorite day. Information about class times and choices is available either online at our parish website; sjvianney.org or paper forms are available in the Faith Formation office. “The Year of the Lord’s Favor: Justice and Jubilee in the Bible” To help prepare for a year of Jubilee in the Church, you are invited to a special event on Monday evening, June 15th at 7:00pm, to hear Dr. Zach Flanagin, chair of the Theology and Religious Studies Department at St. Mary’s College, present on the biblical concept of Jubilee entitled, “The Year of the Lord’s Favor: Justice and Jubilee in the Bible”. Zach’s talk will be shaped by these intriguing questions:

What does the Bible tell us about the character and the values of God?

What does it tell us about living as people faithful to God?

Why does our relationship with the God revealed in the story of Israel and in the person of Jesus require us to concern ourselves with economics, society, and politics?

The evening will conclude with hospitality and an opportunity to write a letter for Bread for the World, a Christian advocacy group that works to end hunger. This special event is co-sponsored by our Faith in Action group and our Scripture Study Task Force. It will take place in the Mullen Commons Vista Room which is located directly behind the church. All are welcome!

Babysitting is available upon request. Please contact Alicia Lang by June 10th to make a reservation at [email protected] or 939-7911 x108. All other questions, please contact Stephanie Baker at [email protected] or 939-7911 x107.

St. Vincent de Paul Collection This weekend will be the fifth Sunday collection for our St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Conference here at St. John Vianney. SVDP is one of the primary ways that our parish reaches out to those in need within the Walnut Creek/Concord community. Through your generosity and support we provide food, gas, rent & utility assistance, clothing and furniture to families in our area. All our funding for this important mission comes from these four special collections throughout the year, so they are critical to sustaining our work.

Please be generous in contributing so that we can carry on the work of the Lord: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Thank You!

Thank You to Our Altar Servers We at St. John Vianney treasure our Altar Servers. We would like to thank all our Altar Servers and Families for serving at the table of the Lord. Please join us for a Blessing and Commissioning this Sunday, May 31st at the 12:30pm Mass.

A potluck luncheon will follow at Mullen Commons Vista.

'Unsung heroes' help parishes do the good work The Catholic Voice asked East Bay Parishes to tell them about the "unsung heroes" who make a difference in their parishes. We wanted to acknowledge the contributions that Carmen Gilson makes not only in our parish, but in the community at large.

“Carmen Gilson “Granny” has been a catechist since 1961 when she and her late husband, Carl, went to the local priest, early in their marriage, and said they wanted to be of service. She has worked with children of all ages as well as adults since that time. Carmen spent six years working in the chancery to support catechetical ministries, but still found herself in desperate need to have her own class and connect with the kids. There is a waiting list for her fifth-grade class on the sacraments because parents know their children will not just learn what the sacraments are, but experience them and interact with them. Carmen has also supported our RCIA program here over 15 years. She and Carl began a Renew group at in 1993 that continues today as a beautiful Small Christian Community. She has grown an entire group of catechists within that group, but we all especially love it when she is the leader!"
