The facts behind the fictionabout the Manhattan AreaChamber of Commerce.1. The Chamber OnlyGives Incentives to Outof Town BusinessesWhile this may be the per-ception, it is not even closeto reality. The Chamber sup-ports giving local economicincentives to local businessesfar more frequently than out-of-town businesses.

Over the past six years, yourChamber has supported onlyone out-of-town businessthat received local incentives. All of the other six compa-nies that received localincentives were businessesthat were already here andwanted to expand their facili-ty and employment.

Local Companies Create JobsA national statistic that alsoholds true in our regionshows that 80% of all newjobs created each year comefrom local companies in ourown community.

Does that mean we won’tsupport recruiting out-of-town businesses? No. Wework hard to find and recruitgood companies to our com-munity and will continue todo so, but our priority willalways be helping local busi-nesses expand and to sup-port them in obtaining localand state economic incen-tives.

2. The Chamber RecruitsRetail BusinessesThe Manhattan AreaChamber of Commerce hashad a long-standing policy ofnot recruiting individualretailers of any size to ourarea. The Chamber willrespond to inquiries of retail-ers who ask about our mar-

ket or who want to be put intouch with local developersor realtors to help them findretail space, but theChamber does not activelyrecruit retailers.

Following Their OwnDirectives - Retailers arefairly sophisticated these daysand monitor demographics, market changes, and productdemand on a monthly orquarterly basis. They maketheir decisions to come toManhattan-based on the sizeand growth of a communityand what other competitionis in the marketplace.

As retailers will tell you, theylike to find those places thathave lots of “new roof tops.”That means the population isgrowing and there is oppor-tunity for their retail busi-ness to succeed.

Retailers are coming toManhattan – not because ofChamber recruitment effortsbut because of populationgrowth.

3. The Chamber CatersTo, and is Made Up of, BigBusinessesOn the contrary, the vastmajority of members, aresmall businesses! As the oldsaying goes, “America wasbuilt on the back of smallbusinesses.” The ManhattanArea Chamber of Commercestrives to provide a diversegroup of programs and serv-ices to meet our small busi-nesses’ needs.

Your ChamberThe Chamber’s 811 mem-bers represent 17,573employees and include alltypes and sizes of companiesthroughout the region andthe Midwest.

• 92% of our members havefewer than 50 FTE • 84% of our members havefewer than 25 FTE • 71% of our members havefewer than 10 FTE • 53% of our members havefewer than five FTE

4. The Chamber is a CityDepartment or Part ofthe City of ManhattanMany people identify theChamber as part of, or underthe control or supervisionof, the City of Manhattan,Riley, and/or PottawatomieCounties, and sometimeseven the State of Kansas.

The truth is that theManhattan Area Chamber ofCommerce, Inc. is a Kansasnot-for-profit corporationfounded in 1925. It is operat-ed by its own board of direc-tors, has a set of bylaws, andits own staff. Neither the citynor the counties have anydirect control, legal owner-ship, or management overthe Chamber.

Contractual Agreements The Chamber does have acontractual agreement withboth the City of Manhattanand Riley County to performsome specified services. Wehave a contract with the Cityof Manhattan to provideassistance in the area of eco-nomic development and con-vention and visitors recruit-ment. Though approved inadvance by the CityCommission, the city carriesno ownership or manage-ment control.

The Chamber has a similarcontract with Riley Countyto perform certain economicdevelopment functions, butagain, there is no ownershipor management control.

5. The Chamber Endorsesand/or OpposesCandidates for PublicOfficeThe Manhattan AreaChamber of CommerceBoard of Directors has had along-standing policy to nei-ther support nor oppose anylocal, state, or federal candi-dates for office. On occasion, the Chamber does supportor oppose local, state, ornational ballot issues, espe-cially if it impacts business.

Endorsements by State &National OrganizationsThe Manhattan AreaChamber of Commerce is amember of the KansasChamber of Commerce andthe U.S. Chamber of

Commerce. Both of theseentities, through their sepa-rate Political ActionCommittees (PAC), do occa-sionally endorse political can-didates. Our membershipdues to these entities, by law, cannot be used in any partby either PAC. OurChamber, is an independentKansas Corporation, gov-erned by our own set of by-laws and a board of direc-tors, and we are not boundin any way by the actions orendorsements of the KansasChamber of Commerce orthe U.S. Chamber ofCommerce and/or theirrespective PAC’s.

Light It Up!Tis’ the season to light up the town! Downtown’sBlue Earth Plaza will soon become a twinkling won-derland and proud home to the tallest Christmastree in Kansas. The 2nd Annual Festival of Lights willtake place at Blue Earth Plaza on November 28th at7:00 PM. Thousands of lights will sparkle on a tree60 feet tall, welcoming people to share in the holi-day spirit.

The Festival of Lights began with an idea by localbusiness owners. Colin Noble, longtime local busi-nessman, had a vision to bring a grand holiday treeto the downtown area. He shared this vision withBrad Everett, Gwyn Riffel, Wade Radina and WardMorgan, who also agreed with this idea. This groupof leaders joined together as Whoville, Inc. to bringthe vision to life. It is a magical event where chil-dren may sit on Santa’s lap, play games and listen tolocal groups perform holiday music. With contribu-tions from the Whoville group, this holiday kick offtradition is quickly becoming a town favorite. It’sthe founders hope that this event will encourageothers to raise money for local charities. 2014 cashdonations received on site will benefit the Manhattan Emergency Shelter.
