Park Permit UpdateThe goal is to attract more park visitors. The RevenueDepartment along with the Department of Wildlife, Parksand Tourism now let residents buy annual park permits whenthey register their vehicles in 2013.

Prior to 2013, these have been separate transactions. Thenew regulations will allow for the Parks Passport to costabout $15 if bought during the vehicle registration process.Regular price is $25. Funding for state parks has decreasedin recent years- posing challenges to operations and maintenance. This effort will hopefully incursome growth in visitors to state parks.

The Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau works close-ly with neighboring Tuttle Creek State Park. Events fromsmall to large are held there, including Country Stampede, the Polar Plunge, and the I Love Manhattan Sprint Traithlon.Attendees of these events bring major revenue toManhattan, staying in our hotels and shopping in our stores, and purchasing park passes if they don’t already have them.Interested in volunteering at these events, or any others? Military UpdateJanuary 2013 Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Little Apple® Business Review Page 11

2012 has been a year of transition-both in Manhattan and on Ft. Riley. The years accomplishments andaccolades for the Military RelationsCommittee have been numerous. Wecontinue our hallmark programs- ourmonthly MRC luncheons which havehighlighted the new Irwin ArmyCommunity Hospital, the KansasState University ROTC program, community partnerships with FortRiley and its entities as well as show-casing military support organizationssuch as AUSA (The Association ofthe United States Army).

Another hallmark program, ourYellow Ribbon Socials- continue tobe a resounding success. Averaging 15spouses twice monthly, we are ableto showcase our Manhattan businessto a group of military spouses eagerfor new experiences and newfavorites and new friends while theirspouses are deployed or displaced

with the United States Army. In theyear 2012, we have reached over 300spouses and have introduced some ofour Manhattan businesses to a newaspect of military family support. Many of the businesses now look foradditional ways to support and assistour military service members andtheir families.

Elaborating on our support for mili-tary organizations, we once againmade a trip with a 16 member con-tingency to Washington D.C. for theAssociation of the United StatesArmy annual meeting. We wereimmersed in the very best of theArmy. We engaged in discussions ofsoldier mental health, of transitioningsoldier success and failures, interact-ed on how we as a community canbest support our military servicemembers and their families, withoutbuilding a dependency of the servicesand perks that we offer. We learned

about how to best support the Armyin creating successful, independentmilitary families who can and will playintegral roles in the civilian communi-ties in which they reside. We werehonored to socialize with TheSergeant Major of the US Army-CSM Raymond F. Chandler III as wellas many other top Army leaders dur-ing our time in the District ofColumbia.

AUSA continues to be a major areaof investment for our MilitaryCommunity Liaison. The organizationis the professional association for theprofessional soldier and Manhattanrepresentation as an integral part ofour local chapter is key to the suc-cess of both AUSA and theManhattan community.

We executed another successful KawValley Rodeo Association MilitaryFamily Appreciation Night. In thanks

to major sponsors, we were able toprovide 1,500 free tickets to theThursday evening performance of theKVRA rodeo during the Riley CountyFair. This opportunity sh0owcases theRiley County Fair and the rodeo cul-ture to many of our service mem-bers and their families who wouldotherwise be unaware of such anamazing opportunity. Our sponsorsallow us to now annually hold a pre-rodeo picnic which feeds over 700attendees. Gunpowder and Lead, Ft. Riley’s country band, performedand door prizes were the hits of theafternoon.

2013 will involve ever-changingatmospheres on Ft. Riley and theMCL is determined to be involved inthat change and make that changebeneficial to our military communitymembers, our Manhattan businessesand our larger community as awhole.
