The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce needs your help! With the federal government looking to cut spending, particularly within the Department of Defense budget, it is up to our community to illustrate how Manhattan and the sur- rounding areas ensure that Fort Riley is strong and viable both today and in the future. We are asking members of the Chamber and the community to write let- ters (thousands of let- ters!) and emails in sup- port of Fort Riley using the information listed below. Your comments may be as long or short as you like, anything from a few pages to a few sentences will do, but please take a few minutes and write by August 25th, it’s important. Let’s focus on the posi- tive and unique partner- ships that are a hallmark of our community. Over and over our Military Liaison is told by our military neigh- bors and their families what a great place Manhattan is to live, work and raise a family, and how Fort Riley is the best kept secret in the Army. Let’s do all we can to keep Fort Riley open and mitigate the number of possible jobs lost. Talking Points: Fort Riley is a critical component of the region’s economy being the largest employer in the area. The region and Fort Riley have benefited by forming strong partnerships in areas such as municipal and emergency services, education (K-12, and post K-12), quality of life programs, and medical services. The region and the state have improved access to Fort Riley by making safety and volume improvements to local highways, and by developing a regional transporta- tion system that includes Fort Riley. The state and the region have protected the future of Fort Riley by putting into place statutes and systems to ensure only compatible use projects are approved near the Fort. The region has built adequate affordable housing and other facilities and infra- structure to support Fort Riley’s current requirements, and has the ability to rapidly provide additional housing and infra- structure such as parks and recreation facilities, community centers, neighborhood organizations and childcare centers. Kansas was the first state to sign the inter- state compact for military children education. The state and region continue to encourage military spouse employment and the transition- of veterans into local communities by recognizing profes- sional licenses from other states and mili tary inclusive career transition program- ming Public comments are due not later than August 25, 2014! The Big 50 winnersmust meet industry standardsof operating excellence andmust measure up to certainfinancial benchmarks. Onceselected, the finalists arepaired into one of the follow-ing categories: Business Savy,

Fine design, Industry impact,Market wise, Movers &Shakers, Niches, Sales &Marketing, and Teamwork.

Matt Carlson- “This opportu-nity has been surreal for us.Many companies awarded inthis class have been in businessfor ten or more years. So as acompany that is only four andhalf years old, it was a veryhumbling and inspiring experi-ence. This award is solelyfocused on remodeling busi-nesses so it allowed us to seehow we compare to othercompanies from around thenation. By far the mostrewarding part of the wholeconference was gaining moreknowledge about how to bet-ter serve our customers andbuild a quality company thatwill stand the test of time.”

Success is largely determined byan ability to play to yourstrengths. If you happen to beshy or introverted, don’t limityour dreams or count yourselfout just because you don’t fitthe traditional image of anentrepreneur. There is morethan one path to success.

Networking events, however, tend to be designed for a partic-ular personality -- the "workhard, play hard," never-met-a-stranger type. Rooms filled withcrowds of people -- not tomention the pressure to beinteresting and likeable -- isenough to give most introvertssweaty palms.

While visibility is a natural partof networking, that doesn’tmean you have to be the centerof attention. Rather thanapproaching networking like an

extrovert, introverts shouldrelax, plan ahead and let theirtrue personalities shine through. Here are some helpful hints.

1. Manage expectations. Ifnetworking events make younervous, don’t psych yourselfout with unrealistic expecta-tions. You may not meet 20 newcontacts or impress others withyour best joke -- and that’s okay. One quality conversation ismore beneficial than 20 superfi-cial ones.

2. Prepare. Plan ahead andprepare some icebreakers.Open-ended questions spurinteresting conversations. Mostpeople love to talk about them-selves, their work and their hob-bies. Ask questions like, “Howlong have you been a memberof the host organization?” or“What’s your favorite part ofyour job?”

3. Set a time limit. When youdecide ahead of time how longyou’ll stay at an event, it makesthe commitment finite andmuch less intimidating. At a min-imum, give yourself 20 minutesto get your nametag, grab adrink and meet at least one newperson. Often, all you need is afew minutes to adjust to theenvironment. You may be sur-prised at how often you’ll staylonger than planned.

4. Ask for an introduction. Ifthere’s a particular person you’dlike to meet, try to find a com-mon connection and request anintroduction. LinkedIn makesthis very easy -- and if thatdoesn’t work, approach theevent’s host. You’ll get much fur-ther with an introduction froma common acquaintance thanapproaching someone out of theblue.

5. Practice empathetic lis-tening. Introverts are usuallyfully-engaged and fantastic lis-teners. Because most people arebetter at talking than listening, you’ll stand out as someonewho values others.

6. Share your personal sto-ries. Challenge yourself to openup. If you ask consecutive ques-tions without sharing informa-tion about yourself, it can startto feel like an interrogation.Participating in the conversationwill help it to flow more natu-rally.

7. Practice. If you’re stillextremely nervous or unsure, challenge yourself with low- orno-risk situations. Drive to anetworking event in the nexttown over where you likelywon’t know anyone. Experimentwith new conversation-startersor stories. That way, even if youmake a complete fool of your-self, it won’t matter.

8. Take small steps.Withincreased practice, you’llbecome more comfortable insocial situations and with shar-ing your true personality. Makeit a habit to take advantage ofeveryday opportunities to net-work. At the office, take smallbreaks to walk around and casu-ally socialize with your col-leagues. Once a week, invite acolleague to join you for lunchor coffee.
