We started with The Flag Ceremony on the Friday night after a pleasant BBQ provided by the Lions Club of Lakes Entrance. Our music maestro Bruce Ardley provided the National Anthems, the flags were brought in by 6 young members of the Lakes Entrance Surf Life Saving Club then presented by our past District Governors. After a formal opening we were treated to a special presentation from Adam Wake, CEO of Lions Village Licola who started with historic footage of Licola taken before it was purchased by Lions and finishing with an enthusiastic presentation about the village and the new “Wild 4” camp that will begin in December. Friday night finished with a meet and greet where we had great entertainment and there was food over when the curtain came down. Saturday began with the elections. Congratulations to DG Elect, Anilta Culpitt, 1 st VDG Elect Andrew McMahon and 2 nd VDG elect Jack Napior on their election to become our future leaders and Stratford Lions on winning the 2017 convention. After morning tea we had one of the highlights of the convention, the Junior Public Speaking District Final. Conventioneers were enthusiastic in their support for these students who spoke with compassion and conviction on the subjects we nominated. Congratulations to Charlie Macpherson- Smith from grade 3 at the Red Hill Consolidated PS and Chelsea Haines from grade 6 at Koo Wee Rup PS on winning their respective finals. After lunch we debated the various motions and then settled back to listen to Ron Iddles, the current head of the Victoria Police Association and a past member of the Homicide Squad with over 25 years service. A fascinating presentation. Saturday night found us at the local golf club entertained by an 18-piece orchestra playing music that ranged for Glenn Miller and Woody Herman to contemporary classics. Good music, good food and great company. Sunday started with the Remembrance Ceremony on the foreshore with a Surf Boat just offshore dropping rose petals to drift away on the tide as the names and history of members who had passed away in the past year was read. Towards the end of the ceremony a pod of dolphins did a swim past as if to salute our members. The Licola Parade of Cheques raised over $8,000 for the V3 Special Needs Camps, then we heard from our “Operation Friendship” visitors from Canade who provided a picture of Lions in that country that was most entertaining. The convention finished with a relaxing BBQ catered by the Lions Club of Metung and more great entertainment. Most District Governors would say their convention was something special but I can say that with conviction. Special thanks go to Cynthia Robinson and her entire committee for a job done to perfection, Ron Payne for the special wine labels, the Junior Public Speaking final, and the remembrance books, Susan Cooper for conducting the service, Patricia Forsyth as Sergeant at Arms and all the Lions from Lakes Entrance and surrounding Clubs that pitched in to ensure that all of us enjoyed an outstanding convention. You gave your District Governor something really unique I will remember for a long time. Ian Gration

small section of native bush at the east end of the
Netball Park in Moe.
This involved removing a substantial amount of non
native trees, shrubs, creepers and other weeds
which had built up over a long period turning the
area into a fire hazard and an ideal home for snakes
and other creatures in an area where a large
number of young people gather. This material was
then burnt with the assistance of the Moe South Fire
Brigade.
The help given to the Lions Club members by
Federation Training Students, Moe South Fire
Brigade and the co-operation of the Latrobe City
Council officers was very much appreciated and
made the task so much easier.
Special thanks to Lion Ken Bechaz and his crew,
Federation students, Moe South Fire Brigade

JUNIOR PUBLIC SPEAKING
A highlight of the Convention
At 10.30 on Saturday morning, the Lakes Entrance convention featured the final of the Junior Public Speaking project with 3 students in the grade 3 -4 level and 3 in the grade 5 - 6 who had won the right to compete. They had won the competition at their school then the Lions Club, the Zone then Region competitions so they were well qualified to put forward a persuasive argument at the District Convention. The support of conventioneers was genuine and enthusiastic so the competitors will remember this day for years to come. All agreed it was one of the highlights of the convention. I received this email from the parents of one competitor: Hi Ron On behalf of my daughter Isabella, I would like to say thank you to the Lions Club for running a great Public Speaking Competition. Bella has learn’t so much and really enjoyed participating. Also thank you to all the members for making us feel so welcome at the conference. She may not have won on the day but she has won a great experience that will give her much confidence in her future endeavors. Thank you Lions Bella Presti and family These comments were echoed by many of the participating families at all levels of the competition. It’s clear this project makes a major contribution to the primary students in our district. If you are considering running this project in your community next year, I will be running a series of coffee mornings early in 2016 to discuss the project with interested Lions. These mornings will happen on a Saturday, they will take no more than 2 hours and
we will conduct them in the east, centre and west of the district. I will write to your club with information.

Club Twinning When a Lions Club decides to establish a relationship with another Lions Club somewhere else in the world, they can formalise it by becoming part of the Lions Club Twinning program. Lions Clubs International strongly supports and promotes the International Club Twinning program, particularly as it is in line with our Third Purpose: “To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world” Through this program Lions and Leos alike have the opportunity to formalise their friendships with clubs in other countries, learn about different cultures and exchange experiences. While it’s not necessarily the case, Club Twinning is also a great opportunity to
directly assist with projects in less fortunate countries around the world. At the Mount Eliza Club, they have twinned with the Table View Lions Club near Capetown, South Africa. The Table View Lions Club had a project that involved a number of Lions Clubs around the world, building a creche for local children in a depressed community. The Mount Eliza Lions donated some funds to purchase educational toys for the children; recent news from Table View advised that the creche was now government accredited and receives funding to continue their work – great news and a great outcome.
Another great opportunity, with the help of social media and virtual communication tools Clubs can plan a joint activity, report results, and share photos and stories with fellow Lions. Below are some tips on how to get started.
Set up a Facebook group where members can introduce themselves, keep in contact, post photos of club activities and service projects, etc.
If possible, plan a visit to the twin club’s country and join in a service activity on-site. Or invite your twin club to join in an activity or event in your community.
