A solid foundation contributes greatly to the smooth handling characteristics of Lincoln MKX’s luxury-tuned, fully independent front and rear suspension. The MacPherson-strut front suspension, mounted to an isolated subframe, employs hydrobushings to reduce unwanted steering wheel vibration. The shock absorbers for the independent rear suspension are mounted outboard and behind the wheel center to help maximize rider comfort and increase driver control. To slow any of Lincoln MKX’s three wheel choices – including the available 20" chrome-clad aluminum wheels – a 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is standard.

Producing a lively 265 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque, the 3.5L Duratec V-6 engine in Lincoln MKX delivers excellent launch and acceleration. Along with an EPA-estimated 24 mpg1 on the highway. A 6-speed automatic transmission, which actually adapts to your driving style to tailor shifts accordingly, gets much of the credit. For more capability in all weather conditions, an available Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system makes any drive more exhilarating. This on-demand AWD system constantly monitors driver and vehicle inputs, predicts traction, and delivers the appropriate amount of torque to all four wheels. ADAPTIVE HEADLAMPS. It’s late at night. You’re visiting a city for the first time. The road twists and turns. There are no familiar landmarks to lead the way. As you navigate sweeping curves, your headlamps – your main source of light – pivot with each turn of the steering wheel to increase your down-the-road visibility. That’s exactly what will happen with the available adaptive headlamps on the 2009 Lincoln MKX.

Based on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed, motorized

halogen low-beam projector headlamps turn in the same

direction that Lincoln MKX is turning. The results are quite illuminating. When compared to conventional headlamps, this simple swivel action makes up to 36 more feet of the roadway visible around a curve.

illumination of its rear lighting panel. Flanking the prominent

Lincoln Star that centers the standard power liftgate, 16 Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) glow whenever the headlamps are turned on.

SOS POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEM. Additional peace of mind comes from the new SOS Post-Crash Alert System,1 designed to make Lincoln MKX easier to see and hear after an accident in which any airbag has deployed or safety belt pretensioner has activated. If either of these occurs, an alert automatically sounds the horn and flashes the hazard lights so you and your passengers may be more easily located.

TOP SAFETY PICK. Lincoln MKX is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick” two years in a row (2007–2008). Rigorous IIHS criteria include a 40-mph frontal offset crash test assessing structural design; a side-impact crash test simulating what it’s like to be struck by an SUV or pickup; and a rear crash-protection test focusing on whiplash prevention. In all three categories, Lincoln MKX earned the highest rating.

SIX AIRBAGS. Standard on every 2009 Lincoln MKX, an array of six airbags enhances protection for outboard passengers. Driver and front-passenger coverage includes dual-stage front airbags and front-seat side airbags, while all outboard passengers benefit from the side-curtain airbags in the Safety Canopy® System. In certain types of side impacts, they deploy from the headliner to cover both rows of seating. Additional protection comes from side-intrusion door beams, energy-absorbing door-trim panels, and bumper-to-bumper flow-through rails that help Lincoln MKX manage energy and enhance its performance in the event of various types of collisions.

ADVANCETRAC® WITH RSC.® Also standard is AdvanceTrac with class-exclusive RSC (Roll Stability ControlTM), the industry’s only electronic stability control system with two gyroscopic sensors – one of which is a unique vehicle-roll motion sensor that directly measures the roll rate 100 times every second. Working in conjunction with the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), traction control and yaw control, AdvanceTrac with RSC uses the roll rate
