Whatever happened to Holiday Beach?
Q: While I was stationed at Point Mugu back inthe late ’80s I remember being able to access Holi-day Beach on weekends and select holidays. Thiswas a great place to be able to take my family for theday and hang out at the beach without fear of fallingoff the rocks. Unfortunately, the beach was closed offto the general public, I believe sometime in the mid-’90s, due to the discovery of a couple of endangeredbirds.I was wondering if a policy similar to the one
that they have at Vandenberg Air Force Base couldbe adopted that allows the beach to be open duringcertain times of the year and/or closely monitored toensure that no nesting areas are being harmed whilestill allowing for access to this pristine beach?
A: Thank you for your question. The closure ofHoliday Beach at Point Mugu — the beach extend-ing from the skeet range to M Street — was carriedout due to operational, security and safety concerns.
Holiday Beach is located within designated safetyarcs and live ordnance areas. These operationsrestrict access for unauthorized personnel. To en-sure safety for base personnel, Naval Base Ventu-ra County restricts access to this area and cannotreopen it because of the unnecessary risk. The closing of Holiday Beach also benefits
listed bird species located in the area and assistsNBVC in stewardship of its natural resources. This additional benefit to listed bird species isutilized by NBVC in working with the U.S. Fishand Wildlife Service as a compensation measurefor operational impacts to listed species elsewhereon Point Mugu.“Family Beach” is located adjacent to the
Beach Motel and RV Park. The area has shelteredpicnic tables and, most of the year, a sandy beach. The beach is ideal for families and is open fromdawn to dusk. There is no lifeguard on duty, soparents should be attentive to children.

Twelve years ago, Louis F. Salazar Jr.enlisted in the U.S. Navy with three goalsin mind: to travel abroad and see theworld, to grow as an adult, and to becomemore self-sufficient.Today, as a Steelworker 1st Class for
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion(NMCB) 40, he has successfully achievedhis goals. He has displayed self-sufficien-cy and adulthood in providing for his wifeand two children, and, with several deploy-ments under his belt, he has a wealth ofgeographic diversity across the world. His responsibility, dedication and com-
mitment were all contributing factors tohis selection as the 1st Naval ConstructionDivision (1NCD) Sea Sailor of the Year. This prestigious award is presented an-
nually to one outstanding Sailor who rep-resents the best of the Navy by demon-strating both professional and personaldedication. This individual is selected be-tween competing applicants from the twoSeabee Readiness Groups (SRGs) andother commands under 1NCD.During the past year, Salazar deployed
to Afghanistan and led 16 Sailors in theconstruction of a Medevac HelicopterLanding Zone, intended to shorten thetimeline needed to evacuate soldiers in-
jured in combat for medical treatment.Upon returning to homeport, he as-
sumed duties as Air Detachment andCharlie CompanyAssistant PlatoonChief, where he led 46 Seabees in technical andmilitary training and personal readiness.“I attribute my success to the leaders
and supervisors who guided me in theright direction, giving me tools to be asuccessful leader to the junior troops whowill take my place as leaders one day,” hesaid. “I would not have been selected forSailor of the Year if it wasn’t for the ded-ication and drive they display everyday.”

Military service is such a proud careerchoice. But at some point, we will face anend to military service and transition tocivilian life.As spouses, transition to civilian life can
be exciting and welcomed, or it can beaccompanied with anxiety and even fear.In this current climate of economic un-certainty and high unemployment, it canbe a concerning time to leave the predict-ability of the military.Once the decision is made to leave mil-
itary service, whether retirement or sepa-ration, your Sailor is required to attend aclass to assist the transition to civilian life:TAP, or Transition Assistance Programclass.TAP class is a weeklong class covering
topics key to a successful transition. Ser-vice members learn about all the benefitscoming to them fromVeteransAffairs, pay— whether retirement or higher tenure— resume-writing and interviewing tech-niques for the civilian world and so muchmore. You may have heard about TAP class
before this column. But, did you knowthat spouses can attend this class? That’s
right – you not only “can”attend this classbut are encouraged to attend the class withyour service member. The transition to civilian life is more
than a job change. It is a life change thatimpacts your Sailor, you and your family. As a veteran, your Sailor has many re-sources and opportunities as well as ben-efits. By now, as a military wife, you havelearned the value of understanding yourbenefits and knowing your resources. Thetransition to civilian life is no different.“The financial portion has helpedmany
make the decision to stay in the Corps,”said one career planner for the Marine
Corps. “For others, it has been a wake-upcall to get prepared early for that transi-tion.”In preparing for this column, I attended
several sessions of TAP classes at my base.Wow! The amount of valuable informa-tion presented in such a short time is over-whelming! As I sat there, I realized thattaking this class as a couple would helpyou not only learn alongside your Sailorbut help you both to catch as much infor-mation as possible to assist with a success-ful transition. So, when should you take TAP class? It
is highly recommended that all Sailors takethe class twice: as soon as the decision ismade to separate or retire from the mili-tary and a second time within three to sixmonths of the actual separation. Retiringservice members are encouraged to takethis class as early as two years before re-tirement.As spouses, we can register for and at-
tend the classes at any time. I cannot en-courage you enough to do so.

Walk into any toy store and you willfind plenty of learning opportunities forchildren of all ages.Toys are fun and encourage play, but
most toys also encourage some form oflearning. Frommotor skills to math com-prehension, science exploration to socialskills, toys and games are an excellent wayfor children to discover new knowledge. Here are some ideas:
Preschoolers• Puzzles provide an excellent opportu-
nity to build critical thinking and reason-ing skills. The extra bonus is that complet-ing a puzzle is a powerful confidenceboost.• Matching games that allow children
to match colors, shapes, numbers and pic-tures help developmath and critical think-ing skills. Look for card games like “GoFish” or memory games.• As children begin to recognize colors,
letters, textures and sounds, choices thatwill encourage this learning are magneticletters and numbers, flash cards and themany small electronic games available.• Creativity and imagination are impor-
tant to begin to build in the preschoolstage. It will lead to better reading com-prehension and writing skills. Dolls andplay figures, musical instruments, andcrayons or paint sets are only a few ex-amples of options to encourage creativi-ty.• Building blocks, Tinker Toys and Lin-
coln Logs help refine motor skills.
Elementary students• There are many options for students
interested in science. Chemistry kits, sci-
ence kits, telescopes and microscopes fos-ter an interest in science and help buildcritical thinking skills.• As elementary school-aged children
are beginning to understand and use strat-egy and probability skills, many boardgames are available. Traditional games likeConnect Four, Monopoly, Scrabble andUno encourage sportsmanship and strat-egy skills.• Project-based toys such as model air-
planes, ships and jewelry kits help improvefine motor skills, but also encourage thestudent to read and follow directions.• An interest in video games is bound
to creep up during the elementary schoolstage. Choose games wisely. Many areavailable that encouragemath and reading. Most also support fine motor skills andhand-eye coordination.
High school students• Books — yes, books — especially a
series that the student can relate to. Highschool students will be doing a lot of writ-ing, and the best way to develop writingskills and vocabulary is to read.• Sewing and knitting skills are not only
becoming a lost art, but also a lost op-portunity to build math skills. Buy a kitor sign up for a local class.• Wood shop classes and auto hobby
classes are slowly being cut in the schools. These skills do not need to be sacrificed.A few tools or a kit can encourage a valu-able interest in carpentry and mechan-ics.• Large puzzles are a great way to en-
courage critical thinking skills and familytime — both important to teens.• Video games, cell phones, laptops and
tablets will no doubt be an interest to thehigh school student. Encourage safe useand appropriate games and apps, and re-member to supervise.
Most toys and games do have an edu-cational value. It is up to the parent orwhoever is purchasing the game to decidewhat academic or life skill should be en-couraged. Purchase accordingly.

“So, what exactly do chaplains do inthe command?”It is a great question, and one that I
asked myself countless times as I spenttwo years preparing myself to enter theU.S. Navy Chaplain Corps and begin do-ing. And driving it all was a personalpassion to care for the service men andwomen who put their personal freedomsaside to defend the unique freedoms thatdefine our great nation and her way oflife.Chaplains perform four primary tasks
in any given command: provide, facilitate, care and advise. All chaplains are firstand foremost “endorsed” representativesof their specific faith group. To be “en-dorsed” basically means that we are “onloan” from our sponsoring agency. There-fore, we are not expected to compromiseour own personal religious beliefs incounseling or services. But what if a troop I serve is not of the
same faith as me? Are they just out ofluck? No. At that point we facilitate—wedo everything in our means to ensure thatall have the opportunity to practice theirpersonal faith, assuming it does not in-
terfere with the mission.Third, chaplains care for those in their
command. What does that mean? I be-lieve a better question is, “What doesn’tthat mean?”Marriage, parenting and fi-nancial counseling. Conversations aboutreligion, spirituality and philosophy.Training in communication skills. Walk-ing with a troop through PTSD, suicideideations, and other mental and emo-tional demands. Standing by a troopfacing punishment. Delivering painfulRed Cross messages. Mediating relation-
ship conflicts. Listening to the frustra-tions of fellow junior officers. Checkingin with the senior officers. Being a listen-ing and non-judgmental ear that anyonecan talk to about anything at any timeof the day. These are just some of theways that the care for my troopsmanifestsitself. Finally, chaplains serve to advise the
command on matters of religion andspirituality as well as on troop moraleand wellness. While a troop’s chain ofcommand is able to train, task and eval-uate a troop’s physical and mental stateto some measure, the chaplain is spe-cially trained and suited to offer insightinto the emotional and spiritual state ofa troop — knowledge we gain through a“ministry of presence.”These four primary tasks of the chap-
lain in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corpsmake up the heart of what we contributeto the command. Often it takes very in-tentional effort to keep up with the de-mands of these tasks. Thankfully, thosedemands drive me to rely on God to giveme the strength necessary to carry for-ward with the mission.

Some might call it “Mission Impos-sible,” but Capt. Jim McHugh, the com-manding officer of Naval Base VenturaCounty, figured out how to capture theattention of 400 eighth-graders.On Friday, Nov. 18, he visited E.O.
Green Junior High School in Oxnardto share some advice about doing wellin school, at work and in life. But first, he had to speak their lan-
guage. So he showed them a music video.Made five years ago when McHugh
was deployed with Carrier AirborneCommand and Control Squadron 116(VAW-116), the video shows Navy per-sonnel dancing their way through anaircraft carrier to “Pump It” by theBlack Eyed Peas. The video became aYou Tube sensation, garnering 3.8 mil-lion views.McHugh himself makes a cameo ap-
pearance — something that wasn’t loston the audience.“There you are!” one youngster yelled
out, pointing to the screen.McHugh’s tactic worked. After the
video was over, they sat up and lis-tened.So McHugh offered some straight-up
advice garnered from his 26 years in theNavy and growing up as the son of aNavy officer. He told how he’d earned an ROTC
scholarship that paid for four years ofschooling, but he made it clear that toearn that scholarship, you had to workhard, concentrate, get good grades andtake part in extra-curricular activities. He encouraged them to make goals
and then to work hard to achievethem. He told them where he’d traveled —
Singapore, Hong Kong, Iraq, Afghani-stan, Australia. He told them he’d gonearound the world — literally.“You meet a lot of different people,
you learn about different cultures,” hesaid. And, he said, you can have fun.“That’s what the music video is all
about,” he said. “There is fun in themilitary and there’s fun with any jobyou do.”But the key, he said, is hard work.
“Bloom where you are planted,” hesaid. “That’s what my dad always toldme. Do the best job you can whereveryou are and you will succeed. Whetherit’s science or math or whatever jobyou’re doing, do it well.”He asked for questions, and one stu-
dent asked him if he owned “Call ofDuty,” a popular wartime video game.“No, I don’t have ‘Call of Duty,’” he
answered.“He doesn’t have it,” one student said
softly, “because he lives it.”McHugh visited E.O. Green a week
after signing a partnership agreementwith Principal Julianne Peña. Volunteersfrom the base will be visiting the schoolregularly to offer lunchtime sports andcrafts activities, and they’ll help withweekend maintenance and cleanup ac-tivities when needed.

Activity, Naples, Italy, VR-55flew 316 flight hours while trans-porting more than 315,000pounds of cargo and 369 passen-gers to destinations in the Euro-pean theater such as Germany,Greece, Albania and Sicily. One particular mission proved
unique when a request was sub-mitted from the Navy Entertain-ment Office for air transport ofDarius Rucker and his band, which was playing a free concertfor military members and theirfamilies at NSA Naples. Rucker, now a successful country singer,is known to many as the leadsinger of the rock band, Hootieand the Blowfish.Later in the detachment, VR-
55 was tasked to conduct a veryhigh-visibility mission in supportof USS Samuel B.Roberts (FFG-58) andUSSTheodore Roosevelt(CVN-71) in their counter-piracyand classified missions in the In-
dian Ocean.With their hard-charging de-
meanor, theVR-55 crewmemberswere excited to be the ones giventhemission to lead theway in aid-ing the two ships in need. Ini-
tially, the message was scheduledfor a five-day mission, but due tothe amount of support needed inthe Seychelles and Mauritius,VR-55, led by Cmdr. AlastairMacGregor, without hesitationconfirmed they would extendtheir detachment to see the mis-sion through until completion.VR-55 also had to coordinate
with a RAVEN Team, whichaided in the protection of the C-130 asset in Djibouti where partof the cargo coordination oc-curred. The support the shipsreceived would not have hap-pened without the great attitudethe crew of the C-130 displayedover the entire mission. These andmany othermissions
were accomplished with just asingle forward deployed aircraft, highlighting the tremendous ef-forts of those involved.Operating four C-130T aircraft
from Naval Base Ventura Coun-ty, Point Mugu, VR-55 providesaround-the clock support to the
fleet, including deployed U.S.Navy ships, submarines, NavySEALS, aviation detachmentsand Marine units. With its ability to take off and
land on short runways and un-prepared surfaces, VR-55’s air-craft provide the unique capabil-ity of delivering cargo todestinations not commonly ser-viced by conventional jet aircraft. Many destinations that were vis-ited during this detachment calledupon the diverse capabilities ofthe C-130T to effectively executetasking from theater command-ers.VR-55 falls underCommander,
Fleet Logistics SupportWing, theNavy’s largest wing, which is theprimary operator of logistics air-craft for theNavy. Thewing sendsdetachments to Japan, Italy andBahrain. The wing’s squadrons also fly
logistics support missions world-wide and throughout the UnitedStates.

On Oct. 28, Salazar was awarded theAdm. Claude V. Ricketts Award, whichrecognizes inspirational leadership andprofessional competence. It was presentedat this year’s Navy League National Con-vention in Chattanooga, Tenn.“SW1 Salazar walks the deckplate every
day, taking an active interest in every as-pect of a Sailor’s development, said Util-itiesman CommandMaster Chief (SCW)
Jamye Rainwater of NMCB 40. “Hisknowledge of people programs is far andabove that of most Sailors. NMCB 40enjoys informed, motivated, and drivenSailors because of his tremendous com-mitment to lead Sailors.”As the 1NCD Sea Sailor of the Year,
Salazar will next represent theNaval Con-struction Force while competing for theNavy Expeditionary Combat CommandSea Sailor of the Year.

her, how he was struck by her profession-alism, her efficiency, her pride in a job welldone.“She had our attention, and she had our
respect,” he said. “And with her positiveoutlook, you couldn’t help but have a goodday after you saw her.”Capt. Richard Cook, commanding of-
ficer of the Center for Seabees and Fa-

Thirteen Seabees from Naval MobileConstruction Battalion (NMCB) 3 at-tended a recent Sexual Assault Preven-tion and Response (SAPR) workshopto train in potential sexual assault vic-tim response. The four-day workshop at the Fleet
and Family Support Center at NavalBase Ventura County (NBVC) PortHueneme trained and educated juniorand senior enlisted leaders on theSAPR program’s mission and goals inhelping sexual assault victims.“The program is about teaching vol-
unteers to support victims through asexual trauma,” said Suzanne Oglesby,a Sexual Assault Response Coordinator(SARC) instructor. “I really enjoyedinstructing this group in particular.”The goals of the SAPR program are
to prevent sexual assaults, improve vic-tim accessibility to counseling and ser-vices, increase sexual assault awarenessand facilitate the proper handling andresolution of sexual assault incidents. To achieve these important goals, the
Navy requires all SARCs and Unit Vic-tim Advocates to attend extensive an-nual training. The Unit Victim Advocates serve as
NMCB 3’s company-level SAPR rep-resentatives and selflessly devote muchof their time and energy to ensuresexual assault victims receive the at-tention and support they need. Servingas a sexual assault responder can beemotionally and mentally taxing, butNMCB 3’s SARCs and Victim Advo-cates are more than capable and willingto help in any situation.“I once spent three hours just trying
to get someone situated,” said AviationElectronics 3rd Class Sara Buckner, aSARC student. “I kept my cell by theside of my bed in case they needed totalk any time of night.”Victim Advocates require 30 hours
of initial training that focuses on crisisintervention, available resources forvictims and how to properly processpotential SAPR cases. Victim Advo-cates must also attend an additional 10hours of refresher training everyyear.

from the summer of 1960 to July of 1965.With themwas theirmother, Evelyn,whose90th birthday had brought them togetheragain. The only onesmissing were their young-
est sibling, Kevin, who was only 6 whentheymoved away andwasn’t able to attendthe reunion, and their dad, Col. Clair Ew-ing, the Air Force liaison officer to the Pa-cificMissile Test Range. He passed away in1995.The familyworkedwithPeterFaulk, who
coordinates base housing, to arrange baseaccess and a tour of the home. The finaldecision was up to the current resident,Misty Brodsky, whose spouse, Cmdr. Aar-on Brodsky is the executive officer of Car-rier Airborne Command and ControlSquadron 112 (VAW-112) and is currentlydeployed. She eagerly agreed.“It’s fun,” she said, watching the child-
hoodmemorieswashover the faces of thesenow-seasoned adults.Karen, who lived in the house between
the ages of 7 and 12, stood in the livingroomand pointed outwhere the piano hadstood and where the couch was.“Over there iswhereweput theChristmas
tree,” she said. “We put it in a playpen inthe corner so Kevin couldn’t knock itdown.”Patty, 3 when they moved in and 8 when
theymoved out, remembered the brick fire-place.None of them had clear memories of
their bedrooms – all the fun had been in themain room of the house and outside.“We called the back yard the bullpen be-
cause it was a circle,” rememberedMike.Brodsky liked that and promised to share
it with her 8-year-old sonAndrew, whowasin school.Thehouse across the street, nowoccupied
by the commanding officer of Naval BaseVenturaCounty, was an admiral’s home 50years ago.Karen remembered hermother’s admon-
ishment the day she decorated his sidewalkwith chalk.“The admiral doesn’t approve,” she had
said.Evelyn Ewing smiled at her daughter’s
memory.They remembered thinking as youngsters
that Point Mugu was Point Magoo andwanting to know where Mr. Magoo was. They rememberedpayingadime towatch
a movie at the base theater. Brodsky told
them themovies are now free, and they sug-gested they ask for their money back. Agrinning Faulk said that was out of hishands. Some questions reflected a child’s per-
spective of Navy life: “Do they still playmusic at sundown?”Karen asked.Yes, Faulk replied. It’s Retreat.Theyweredisappointed tohear that some
of the beachside buildings were gone, vic-tims of long-ago storms. All of them remembered the drive from
Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio toPointMugu. How could they forget? It wasAugust of 1960, and they came across in a1959 Chevy with a U-Haul trailer and noair conditioning. They passed throughTexas, New Mexico, Arizona, the MojaveDesert and then ended up in Point Muguwhere it was 70 degrees in themiddle of theday.“We thoughtwe’d died and gone to heav-
en,” said Mike, who arrived when he was12 years old. “It was a beautiful place.”Mikewent toHuenemeHighSchool, and
his younger siblingswent through theOceanView School District.“It was a good place to raise children,”
Mike said. “Of course, living across thestreet from the admiral, we did have to toethe line.”They agreed that the one most affected
by five years at Point Mugu was the onewho wasn’t there: Kevin. He had alwayswanted to be a helicopter pilot, even afterwitnessing a crash on base. He ended upattending theAirForceAcademyand todayis a retired Air Force major teaching inColorado Springs, Colo. The familymoved toFlorida in 1965, but
Mike stayed behind so he could graduatefromHuenemeHigh.Henow lives inLake-port.His sister Kathy, 15 when they moved,
endedupattending threehigh schools:Hue-neme, one inFlorida andone nearVanden-bergAir Force Base, which ended up beingtheir father’s last tour. Their mother stilllives in Lompoc. Kathy, nowKathy Abra-ham, lives in Montana.Karen, now Karen Harmison, lives in
Kansas with her husband, Don.Patty, now Patty Russell, lives in Santa
Clarita, and her daughter’s wedding — aswell as theirmother’s birthday—waswhathad brought everyone to the area and trig-gered the idea of a walk down MemoryLane.Except in this case, it wasmore of a stroll,
and the street was Polaris.

Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), ex-plained that she was receiving the award, then led her in front of the SeabeeMemo-rial, where he read the document.Godbille was recognized for her work
during the past year in moving the SeabeeMuseum from two drafty old Quonsethuts at NBVC, Port Hueneme, to a brand-new building just outside the base gates, accessible to the general public. The move included transporting 12,000
artifacts and 9,000 linear feet of docu-ments.“Lara worked tirelessly, giving up her
nights and weekends, to ensure that theexhibits were in place and that everythingwas ready for the new museum opening,”stated the award, which was signed by re-tired Rear Adm. Jay DeLoach, director
of the Naval History and Heritage Com-mand. The museum opened on Friday,July 22, during Seabee Days. About 8,000people have visited since that day.Godbille said she was shocked and over-
whelmed by the award, then turned thespotlight onto her three staff members— archivist Gina Nichols, curator KimCrowell and exhibit curator Bill Shaner— the volunteers and her family.“I didn’t go out and catalog everything
andmove everything—you did!”she said.“You guys did all the work!”NBVCCommandMaster Chief Thom-
as Cyr praised the new museum.“It is a beautiful facility,” he said. “It
continues to evolve into a great historicalgathering of what the Seabees have doneand what they continue to do.“I’m very proud that we have it.”
