Spring Rev Up:
BUMP
upyour salads
As winter slowly melts away (thankfully), it’s time to kick start your diet with the addition of great salad toppers. Food doesn’t have to be boring, and eating well doesn’t have to be a punishment. The fun comes from getting creative and experimenting. This month, I challenge you to bump up your meals and try something new. In par-ticular, the food item I’ll focus on is the dreaded salad.
Eating well is supposed to be enjoyable; however, when it comes to salads, the typical mix of lettuce, tomato, and cucumber doesn’t really make us jump out of our seats. This month, I’ll keep it simple with different ways
In the meantime, here is a great recipe to get you started: Begin with spinach, chickpeas, chunks of watermelon, cherry tomatoes, and feta. Bump it up with almond slivers and chia seeds. If that isn’t enough flavour, drizzle some raspberry vinaigrette on top. Get used to the idea of playing with flavours and combinations—spring is a time to improve and refresh your diet. Your body will thank you for ex-perimenting and trying new things. If you’ve hit a creative roadblock, explore my favourite website, Pinterest, for some great recipe ideas.

Don’t be afraid to throw fruits in there!
Add grapes, apples, or strawberries for added sweetness when you want
to cut down on dressing.
add herbs and spices
Cilantro, though often over-looked, is a great addition to any simple salad. Its fla-vour removes the need to add salt to salad variations like bean/pasta salads.
give it some crunch
Nuts, walnuts, chia seeds, hemp hearts and pumpkin seeds are quick and easy additions to add some extra omega 3s and change up tex-ture. It also doesn’t hurt they are metabolism boosters.
protein doesn’t have to mean chicken breast
Add salmon, hard boiled eggs, or even beans to your mixes so you don’t get bored.
