For Just A Little More…House hunting can be exciting, frustrating, exhilarating and exhausting. If you’re just beginning the process, prepare yourself to look at many houses before you find “the one”. Beware, though, of the “super-size” it temptation. You know the drill. You order a small (fill in the blank) and the helpful cashier reminds you that for just a few cents more, you can super-size your order.
It’s pretty common for potential buyers to lose focus somewhere in the shopping process. You start out looking for three bedrooms and two baths but once you walk through that corner house with the extra room that could be used as a spare room or den, you’re tempted to spend just a little more to get a little more. Before you know it, instead of looking at houses safely within your target price range, you’re touring homes on the high end of that budget and convincing yourself you “deserve” the extra space.
How do you combat the temptation to over-shop? Make a checklist of the things you’ve decided ahead of time are a “must have” for your future home. This might include a specific number of bed/bath rooms, location, storage space, move in condition and, of course, price point. Make a commitment to stick to your budget and “must have” list, and if you’re using a real estate agent, insist they only show you listings that meet your specific criteria. Find someone who will hold you to your list and listen when they remind you you’re straying outside your boundaries. Saving just a little more generally yields more favorable results than spending just a little more.
LifeandHomes can make your home search easier. This issue features some of the best real estate deals on the market in a wide variety of price ranges. visit www.LifeandHomes.com and use our Open Market Listing ServiceTM to view even more real estate listings including residential, commercial, waterfront, multi-family and land/lot properties. Mortgage rates are holding at record lows and the market is brimming with listings. July is shaping up to be a great month for buyers and sellers. Get your checklist together and start house hunting. You know the drill.

You can do that with vinyl siding? With the economy making a slow rebound, homeowners continue to look for cost-effective options when building or renovating their home. Natural exterior building materials are often very expensive and require both time and money to maintain. Choosing vinyl and polymeric siding is one way people are saving on building materials. Both siding options, which many considered at one time to be fake-looking or boring, have become one of the most versatile, detailed and eco-friendly home exterior products available on the market today.
Throughout the last few decades, vinyl cladding products have evolved from simple, smooth, non-engineered panels without much detail, to now include hundreds of colors including dark hues, engineered features that drastically improve on-the-wall performance, and computer digitized woodgrains from real wood to create authentic-looking accents and profiles such as shake, shingle and scallops. The ability of manufacturers to create natural-looking products that can be customized for a wide range of home styles means that homeowners in every part of the country can find a style that suits them.
For more information about the attributes of vinyl siding, visit www.plygem.com, and check out www.bsbdesign.com for ideas on personalizing your home with vinyl siding. (ARA)
colorful Home Decorating IdeasWhen you’re ready for a change, you can have a new home without changing your address. How? With paint. Homeowners looking to change up their decor have found that color trends in home design are deeply rooted in
both “then” and “now.” The idea of decorating using colors that reflect the new and the old takes shape by showcasing classic, calming neutrals with a few energizing standout colors, such as bright pinks and yellows.
The Colors of “Then”--For those looking to incorporate a more classic feel into their homes, neutrals such as deep gray-brown, muted and warm beiges and asphalt gray-blue are choices that work together to create environments that are calm and organic. Together, they allow for a merging of modern and rustic styles. Creamy whites, serene sea foam blue-green, pale butter and deep bronze-golds with metallic finishes provide a similar feeling, but can create a more refined and romantic space.
The Colors of “Now”--Homeowners interested in giving their spaces a more dramatic pop can join the trend toward incorporating bright, vibrant colors into the home. Profound pinks and rusty oranges can be found playing against off-whites and stony grays to create a space that is sensual, eclectic and worldly. Playful yellows in combination with pure white and sleek black pack a punch and are great for the home decorator who isn’t afraid to make a bold statement.
“Frivolous choices are a thing of the past,” says Dee Schlotter, paint color expert at The voice of Color, PPG Pittsburgh Paints. “Today’s color trends have staying power. You renew instead of buying new. You choose sustainable colors with an environmental and economic awareness that’s becoming second nature for us all.”
Whether you want to stick with the classic colors of then, the current colors of now or create your own style, you’ll want a high-quality paint brand that offers a variety of color choices. For example, PPG Pittsburgh Paints has nearly 2,000 colors, unique color palettes and yearly color trends.
To learn more about the latest colors and trends and to find a nearby paint dealer, visit www.voiceofcolor.com. (NAPSI)
HUD Housing for VeteransU.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Shaun Donovan announced nearly 8,000 homeless veterans will get permanent housing assistance through a HUD rental as-sistance program that connects homeless vet-erans from local veterans Affairs Medical Centers (vAMC) with rental assistance vouch-ers provided by local public housing agen-cies. HUD’s veterans Affairs Supportive Hous-ing Program (HUD-vASH) will provide local public housing agencies with $58.6 million in funding specifically targeted to assist home-less veterans in their area.

tips And Gear To Make Travel More enjoyableGetting the right on-the-go gear is an easy and affordable way to avoid the stress of traveling and can keep everyone entertained. Here are some helpful tips to make your vacation more enjoyable:
• Bring a survival kit--Travel plans don't always go smoothly, so ensure you can keep everyone in good spirits in the unlikely event of a break-down or airport delay. Essentials such as snacks, sunscreen, bottled water, first-aid supplies and a flashlight can help you weather the unexpected. The little extras--coloring books and crayons, a favorite pillow or blanket, DvDs to watch en route and a Kindle loaded with your favorite books (available nationwide at Target)--will keep everyone comfortable and occupied.
• watch the road--Having maps handy will take the hassle out of any road trip--or even the quick drive across town. A GPS navigation system is a must-have to keep your travels headed in the right direction. Most GPS systems can guide you through unfamiliar areas; suggest an alternative route around rush hour traffic; find the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations; and perform an increasing array of infotainment functions. Printing out airport or roadside maps ahead of time lets you preplan your pit stops and make the most of every minute.
• Keep kids entertained--Keep boredom at bay by bringing along entertaining gadgets such as the RCA 10" portable Blu-ray player ($299.99 at Target) or the new big-screen Nintendo DSi XL handheld that will keep kids of all ages amused for hours, on and off the road.
• tune in or out--Take your iPhone or iPod Touch and you can use free apps such as Pan-dora Internet Radio and Shazam to turn your trip into a musical adventure. Just make sure you don't forget an iPhone/iPod car stereo
adapter-they're available for almost any car, whether you have an auxiliary input, AM/FM adapter or a tape deck connection. Also, bring along some headphones for those family mem-bers who prefer to travel to the beat of their own iPod.
• capture the moment--Don't miss a moment of the fun--capture it on video so you can share and remember your trip for years to come. With the Flip MinoHD Camcorder, it's easy to film your own videos and upload them directly to Facebook or to your computer. The Flip is a stylishly small, pocket-sized device and it's available for $199.99. (NAPSI)
Countrywide Fined $108 Million
For OverchargesTwo Countrywide mortgage servicing companies will pay $108 million to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they collected excessive fees from cash-strapped borrowers who were struggling to keep their homes. The $108 million will be used to reimburse overcharged homeowners.
According to the complaint filed by the FTC, Countrywide’s loan-servicing operation de-ceived homeowners who were behind on their mortgage payments into paying inflated fees – fees that could add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars. When homeowners fell behind on their payments and were in default on their loans, Countrywide ordered property inspections, lawn mowing, and other services meant to protect the lender’s interest in the property, according to the FTC complaint. But rather than simply hire third-party vendors to perform the services, Countrywide created subsidiaries to hire the vendors. The subsidiaries marked up the price of the services charged by the vendors –
often by 100% or more – and Countrywide then charged the homeowners the marked-up fees.
Countrywide earned substantial profits by funneling default-related services through subsidiaries that it created solely to generate revenue.
According to the FTC, under most mortgage contracts, homeowners must pay for necessary default-related services, but mortgage servicers may not mark up the cost to make a profit or charge homeowners for services that are not reasonable or appropriate to protect the mortgage holder’s interest in the property. (FTC)
59% of homeowners with a mortgage would not consider walking away from their home no matter who much their home is ‘underwater”.

When it comes to your kitchen, details make all the difference. It’s often the most used and best-loved room in the house, so having a room that meets your needs and expresses your personality is key. If your kitchen’s design has been frustrating you by creating clutter and giving your home an out-of-date feel, it’s time to make some changes.
The good news is that, because details carry so much weight, making relatively small adjustments can have a lot of impact without being prohibitively expensive.
One of the simplest changes you can make is changing the hardware on your cabinets, but this little move can completely alter the feel of your room. Whether your cabinets are minimalist, traditional or somewhere in between, you can give them a different spin by changing the finish or style of your cabinet knobs and handles.
Right now, trends are leaning toward softer, muted finishes like oil-rubbed bronze and brushed nickel. The Aspen line from leading decorative hardware maker Top Knobs is available in wide variety of styles, whether you’re looking to change the cabinet hardware in your kitchen, bath or on your closets.
“While it used to be that rubbed bronze was used in rustic, cabin-like settings, it’s now being used in a wider variety of kitchen styles,” says David Tyler of Top Knobs. “When it’s styled in a contemporary way, it completely changes the effect and it can be used in kitchens that range from transitional to modern.”
No matter what kind of decor you have, pay attention to quality. It’s easiest to gauge this if you can feel and see the products in person. While you can go to a show room to test things out, Top Knobs also sends out free samples of its solid, hand-finished metal drawer knobs and handles. You can place a sample order through their website, www.topknobsusa.com, and in a couple of days, you’ll be able to try out new cabinet hardware right at home.
If your cabinets have started to feel dated, it might be time for a complete change. Sleek, modern cabinets with subtle details are growing in popularity, but many homeowners are choosing to combine elements of traditional style with newer developments for a look that is both clean and comfortable.
Cabinet colors are proliferating, giving you more choices. Today, if you want cherry cabinets, you can choose from an array of warm, rich tones instead of only having one option. For those looking for a fresh, light feeling in the kitchen, white cabinets are still the go-to solution.
It’s OK to get a bit more creative with the color of your walls, letting them say something about you. When making paint choices, look to color forecasts. This year, it’s all about tones found in nature, from the bold (coral, turquoise, bright yellow and red) to the soft (blush pink, muted greens and soft browns).
Again, it’s important to see how things will look in your house, so use cabinet and paint samples offered by many retailers. The light in your home could cause the color that won your heart in the store to look totally different.
Perhaps the quickest fix of all, and one that you can make today, is to clear clutter. When too many gadgets crowd your countertops or papers collect on the fridge, the space can feel chaotic. If you need to rearrange the contents of your cabinets to find storage space, make a weekend project out of it.
While you’re doing the re-arranging, look for items that you can do without and set them aside for a yard sale or donation to a charity. The ultimate luxury of having more storage space will mean more than having a gadget you use once a year. When things are all in their right places, you can tackle the next step in reviving the look of your kitchen. (ARA)

At some point, many people with retirement or employer-sponsored investment accounts will find themselves faced with the decision of what to do with rollover funds. This can happen when you change jobs and cash out a 401(k), or when you retire. In either case, it is important to think through your options. Ideally, it’s best to choose a strategy that meets your retirement needs, minimizes the impact of taxes and avoids penalties.
Please note this is a general overview, and tax laws can be tricky, so be sure to talk to an accountant and/or tax attorney before making any financial decision.
roll it over
One possible option is to directly roll your entire distribution into a new Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or an employer-sponsored 401(k). Either one would allow you to continue to defer taxes and allow you to continue building your retirement savings for the future.
leave it where it is
You may want to keep funds in your employer’s plan until you reach the plan’s retirement age, if that is an option. This may be ideal if you want to take advantage of certain investment options or managed money services available in your existing plan. Your funds will remain tax-deferred and can later be moved to a new employer’s qualified plan or an IRA.
take the taxable distribution
Depending on your situation, you may choose to withdraw the funds from your 401(k). Although you will have immediate access to your savings, there are a few things to consider when taking a lump-sum distribution. First, your money will no longer have the potential to grow tax-deferred and it will be subject to state and federal taxes. Additionally, if you are under age 59½, a 10% IRS penalty may apply.
