Significantly more U.S. homeowners are moving forward with renovation projects compared to this time last year according to a 2013 Houzz & Home survey. The same study reports three-quarters of homeowners believe that now is a good time to buy a home. Together with a recent report from the Commerce Department showing the rate of single-family home construction at its highest level in four and a half years, the results of this survey seem to point to a strengthening housing and renovation market. Let’s hope these trends play out in our own local market.

7 things you can Do With your tax refundBy Adam Faughn

1. Build your emergency fund. - A few thousand dollars can really bolster your emergency savings and provide peace of mind for those unexpected bills. Don’t let your money earn pennies in inter-est; find an online bank with a nice interest rate.

2. Start a business. - A refund check of $2,000-3,000 can go a long way in starting a small business, especially in an online venture where you have little to no overhead. Check out the site Entrepreneur.com for some great business ideas that cost less than $2,000. Some examples include: Residential Cleaning, Boat Cleaning Service, House Painting, Mobile Mechanic, Pool Cleaning Service, Web Design 3. Fund an IRA.- You can use the extra funds to increase your Roth or Traditional IRA for the year. Easy as that.

4. give some away.- Bless someone directly by providing a student with a scholarship or by sponsoring a youth group kid for a mission trip. The number of ways you can give and be generous are almost endless, so be creative.5. Increase your 401(k) contributions.- Although you may not be able to contribute to your 401(k) or 403(b) outside of your payroll deductions, you can live on the tax return and tell your employer to apply the next few paychecks to your retirement plan. This is a nice way to increase your 401(k) – though it’s often recommended to max out a Roth IRA before you contribute to your 401(k) (unless, of course, your employer has a match – then you should take advantage of that first).

6. Spend it.- You can always use the funds for something you’ve wanted to do for a while, like take a vacation. Of course, you’ll hear that it’s best to budget for things like a vacation, but it’s awfully tempting just to wait and use a tax refund to go on a trip.

7. Pay down debt.- Sure, a few thousand-dollar

tax return may not seem like it can do much to pay down a large load of student loan or credit card debt, but every bit can help. Just think, if you can even knock one school loan payment of $50 from your monthly obligations, you can apply that $50 to other loans to help pay them off even quicker. Window Safety tips For Kids

The experts at Simonton Windows recommend parents of youngsters adopt an extremely cautious attitude with children and the windows in their home.

“Children should be taught at a young age to stay away from windows for their own safety,” says gary Pember, vice president of marketing for Simonton Windows. “Parents can help safeguard children in the home by keeping furniture (including cribs) and anything else a child can climb on, away from windows. And, if your home has Double Hung windows, open only the top part of the window that children cannot reach, to allow for ventilation.”

Pember offers these tips for window safety in the home:

* Remember the primary purpose of a window screen is to keep insects outside. Never push on screens, as they will not support the weight of a child or family pet.

* Lock windows when not in use to protect against intruders and make it more difficult for curious young children to open windows.

* Do not paint or nail windows shut. Every window in the home that is designed to be opened should be operational in case of an emergency.

* Refrain from nailing or attaching decorative lights to the interior or exterior of window frames.

* Plant shrubs or grass, and place “soft landscaping” like bark or mulch, directly underneath windows to help lessen the impact should someone accidentally fall out of a window.

tips for evaluating your roofUsing either a ladder or binoculars from across the street, look for problem areas, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roofing tiles that may be “flapping” in the wind. These are all indications that a new roof may be in your future.

Check the sides of your roof. The southern exposure weathers significantly faster than the other sides of the roof, so make sure to carefully examine this area. Also, shallower pitches weather faster than steeper pitches. So again, if your roof has a shallow pitch -like a shed dormer -make certain you can clearly see it to get a true indication of the condition of your roof.

If you have a real cedar roof, consider your geographic location. Many West Coast homeowners are proactively replacing these wooden roofs with fire- and impact-resistant polymer shake roofs. Along with helping protect the home from potential wildfires, these roofs oftentimes come with a homeowner insurance discount.
