Content Audit
Why Audit?
What do I need to conduct an audit?• Time• Tools• Personnel• Technical skills
Step 1. Create Content Inventory• Information to include:
Page title Browser title Page Owner Attached files (e.g. Word, Excel, images, videos etc.) Link to other webpages Date last modified Last modified by Folder the webpage belongs URL
Step 2. Check Page Title and URL • Is the page title meaningful?• How long is the URL?• Is the URL unique?
Step 3. Check Description• Does the description accurately represent
content on the webpage?• Is the description too long?• Is the description written for humans or
search engines?
Step 4. Check Content• Is content dated?• Does the content helps to answer a
question for your users?• Is the content accurate?• Is there typos or grammatical errors?• Is layout of content too crowded?
Step 5. Check Keywords• Do you put in keywords in meta or tag
field?• How many keywords did you have?• Are the keywords good?
Step 6. Check alt Tags• Each image should have alt tags and
title.• Alt tags should be descriptive.
Step 7. Check Last Updated• When is the page last updated?• While not every page requires an
updated, it does warrant a review!
Tips for a Successful Audit• Create audit inventory based on library
missions and goals• Determine achievable scope• Establish timeline based on website size• Launch audit during downtime• Provide clear and detail instruction
