Comportamiento periódico: altamente predecible, se repite a sí mismo. Es determinístico.
Comportamiento aleatorio: nunca se repite. Aunque se puede predecir el comportamiento de un sistema utilizando estadísticas.
El CAOS tiene características de ambos comportamientos.
Parece desorganizado como el comportamiento aleatorio.
Es determinístico como un comportamiento periódico.
Sin embargo, la más pequeña diferencia en las condiciones de origen, puede hacer que haya una gran diferencia en el futuro estado del sistema.

Un sistema complejo es una red de elementos (agentes) que intercambian información de forma tal que el cambio en el contexto de uno de los elementos, cambia el contexto de todos los otros. La complejidad es el resultado de la interacción de elementos que sólo responden a la información limitada que se les presenta.

La ciencia de la complejidad se centra principalmente sobre los Sistemas Adaptativos Complejos.
Sistema: conjunto de agentes conectados (siendo cada parte independiente e influida por condiciones no controladas por un cuerpo central)
Adaptativo: tiene capacidad de aprender de la experiencia y modificar su comportamiento
Complejo: con muchas conexiones entre muchos elementos

Los sistemas complejos consisten en un gran número de elementos que interactúan.
La riqueza de conexiones de la red significa que las comunicaciones pasarán entre el sistema pero serán modificados en el camino.

Relaciones no lineales adaptativas
Raramente las relaciones existentes entre los elementos son simples o lineales.
Generalmente una pequeña causa genera una gran consecuencia, o no genera ninguna consecuencia.
Además, existen retroalimentaciones tanto positivas como negativas: los efectos de la acción de un elemento vuelven al mismo elemento y por tanto afectan a su comportamiento futuro.
Así, existen un conjunto de relaciones no lineales adaptativas evolucionando en el tiempo.

El sistema es diferente a la suma de sus partes
En términos organizativos, no son especialmente críticos los individuos sino sus relaciones.
Los elementos no conocen la totalidad, de manera que ningún elemento por sí mismo puede controlar o “saber” lo que pasa en el conjunto del sistema.
Nadie puede permanecer fuera del sistema y pretender entender y organizarlo según un futuro predeterminado, tal y como los continuos cambios organizacionales en los sistemas de salud han demostrado repetidamente.

Emergencia
El comportamiento de los sistemas complejos evoluciona desde la interacción de agentes a nivel local sin dirección externa ni presencia de control interno.
La emergencia da a los sistemas la flexibilidad de adaptarse y autoorganizarse en respuesta a un reto externo.
La emergencia es un modelo de comportamiento del sistema imposible de predecir mediante un análisis de las partes que componen dicho sistema.

Autoorganización
La evolución de todos los sistemas vivientes ha sido explicada por el principio de la auto-organización, donde un sistema reorganiza su estructura para que pueda enfrentarse a las demandas del entorno.
Un sistema que se auto organiza tratará de mantenerse en equilibrio en un punto denominado “borde del caos” donde es capaz de adaptarse con el menor esfuerzo en respuesta a una amplia variedad de retos externos.

Estilos “caninos” de liderazgo

Normalmente los nuevos líderes, cuando asumen un nuevo puesto se obsesionan con la perspectiva de hacer una revisión y cambio radical en la empresa.
Esto trae consigo una avalancha de ajetreada y constante actividad.
La desorganización constante agota a los gestores que de forma apresurada van de una reunión a otra sin tiempo para pararse a pensar.
Para cuando la organización se decide finalmente a averiguar de quién es la culpa del lío resultante, el líder se ha ido para dar al traste otra organización.
El resultado final es un eterno círculo vicioso de redesorganización.
