Zone, the period between the start of a college year up until Thanksgiving break tends to have the highest rates of sexual assault on college campus-es, according to studies by the Jour-nal of American College Health, the Department of Justice and others.
The risks of sexual assault during the Red Zone are so high for a multi-tude of reasons.
· Students use this time to try to meet new people and participate in GLIIHUHQWDFWLYLWLHVIRUWKHÀUVWWLPH
· There is less parental super-vision and control, leading to in-creased independence and, ultimate-ly, experimenting with new things.
· Students may be in a new environment.
From 2011 to 2013, LHU’s main campus had 14 reported forcible sex-ual offences – that’s 14 cases of rape, sodomy or sexual assault. Assaults happen year-round and not every case gets reported.
That is why it’s so important for students to become educated on how to stay safe as well as protect others.
· Learn about legal consent. If you are making unwelcomed or unre-ciprocated advances, stop.
· Realize that we are humans – regardless of clothing, alcohol/drug consumption or actions. Humans are not to be made into objects. Humans do not simply exist for the pleasure of others.
· Do not be a bystander. If you see or hear someone in distress, call for help. If a friend is putting him/herself into a dangerous situation, talk to him/her about it.
· Remember the buddy system. If you have any questions about
sexual assault or if you or someone you know has suffered an assault,
please contact a professional who can help. Sexual assault continues to happen because people are afraid to talk about it.
Students should also familiar-ize themselves with public safety’s Sexual Assault Response Guarantee, which can be found at http://www.lhup.edu/students/campus_safety/sexual_assualt_response.html.

Thousands celebrated health, happiness and individ-uality last weekend at The Col-or Run on Penn State’s campus Sunday morning. Starting at nine am, waves of participants entered the course every 15 minutes. Runners and walkers were both doused with colored corn starch every kilometer throughout the 5k.
By the end, yellow, pur-ple, pink, and blue coated the athletes, volunteers and the landscape. As each participant FURVVHG WKH ÀQLVK OLQH WKH\were given their own packet of color. Some chose to keep the color packet as a souvenir, but PRVWÀQLVKHUVJHWLQDELJJURXSto throw their pigments in the air all at once.
The ‘race’ was not even slightly competitive. Sure, there were some who wanted to run, but for the most part everyone was there for the experience. El-derly women with walkers and new moms with strollers were both seen on the course, prov-ing the event can be for literal-ly anyone. As The Color Run’s website states, “Less about your 10 minute mile and more about
having the time of your life!”,QWKHÀUVWFRORU\HOORZDO-

Some were picking it up off the ground and throwing it at their teammates, others were mak-ing ‘color angels’ in the dust. People were dancing, taking photos and celebrating their ac-complishment. The after-party included music, more dancing, and plenty more color.
Events are being held un-til the end of the year all over the United States, and more locations are in the works to be added. The registration fee of $40 (or $35 if you sign up ear-ly!) includes not only your reg-istration, but also a ‘swag bag’ containing a t-shirt (this can be worn the day of the race, but many opt to bring their own white t-shirts and keep the giv-en shirt), temporary tattoos, and a bracelet. On Tuesday September 16, the Latino Student Association (LSA) invit-ed poet Joaquin Zihuatanejo to speak on campus as a representation of His-panic Heritage Month.
When asked why they chose Zihua-tanejo to perform, the LSA responded saying that they “wanted something different for Hispanic Heritage Month and that they enjoyed his passion when they watched one of his performances on HBO.”
They stated that Zihuatanejo’s sto-ry was “a prime example of what mi-norities deal with on a daily basis.”
Zihuatanejo was raised by his grandfather due to his mother’s inabil-ity and his father’s refusal to do so. Be-ing raised by his grandfather impacted him so much that Zihuatanejo invokes his grandfather’s spirit before each per-formance through a call to his muse.
His grandfather forced him to read every night and taught him valuable
life lessons that Zihuatanejo still car-ries with him to this day. For example, if you are a Spanish speaking indi-vidual living in the United States you have probably heard the phrase “this is America, speak English” at least once in your lifetime.
The idea that one must only speak English in the United States, despite the US being a melting pot of cultures and not having an established nation-al language, seems to be a popular one amongst racists. They seem to think that American English is the superior language. However, poet Joaquin Zi-huatanejo,
who performed in Ulmer on Tues-day September 16th, demonstrated through a spoken word poem how En-glish is in fact a melting pot of other languages that somehow mesh togeth-er in order to create this “superior lan-guage.”
He peacefully dedicated that par-ticular piece to a man who loudly com-mented on Zihuatanejo’s use of his na-tive tongue as he tied his daughter’s shoe when most would have lashed out in anger.
Zihuatanejo’s grandfather taught him to never react with hatred and to accept and love others despite their faults. He tries to embody the essence of his grandfather in everything that he does and says. Zihuatanejo’s grand-father is present throughout a large portion of his poetry, as are his grand-mother and parents.
Zihuatanejo talked about the im-portance of family and the connection between a parent and child, especially ZKHQ WKDW SDUHQW LV DPLVVLQJ ÀJXUH-head in the child’s life. The power of his words and the emotion that rippled through the audience was almost tangi-ble as he spoke about apples falling far from trees and crooked trunks that are sawed in half. Zihuatanejo’s words were some that everyone could relate to, not just Hispanics.
National Hispanic Heritage Month lasts until October 15th, but that doesn’t mean that one should forget about the struggles minorities have faced and continue to face to this day. The LSA hopes to host another event featuring Brazilian dancers before the end of Na-tional Hispanic Heritage month.

Students educate other students politically in annual Constitution Day eventKyra [email protected]
LHU hosted its third annual Constitution day, which al-lowed students from two Political Science classes to create posters relating how the constitution worked in their every-day lives.
The posters, created by the Public Administrations class and Political Parties and Elections class, featured topics like the role of the ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms), the election of the Vice President and others.
“The students’ only requirement is that their topics have to be able to relate back to the Constitution,” said Stanley Berard, a political science professor. “In the past, we’ve had posters that discussed NSA and whistleblowers.”
Berard intends to continue holding the event in the fu-ture.
“It’s important that students know how the constitution relates to them,” said Berard.

Just when you think that there was an app for everything, there’s a new
one out. There are already social media sites out there that are popular, like
Facebook and Twitter, but this popular app is kicking it up a notch.
Yik Yak is an app that is an anonymous messaging board. According to
techcrunch.com, the app gained over 100,000 users just three months after its
launch in November 2013. The app has categories for campuses all over the
country.
The app is a forum for people to say whatever they want, because every-
thing is anonymous. These Yaks, as they are called, are then sent out by GPS
tracking to the closest 500 people near your location. Many students like this
type of forum.
“It is a way to let a thought out there without putting a face to it so you
have no predetermined judgement on a person for what they said,” said Zach-
ary Hartman, a freshman communication major.
Although this app is a soundboard for students to say what they want,
it has also stirred up controversy on some campuses and even in some high
schools. Two boys in the Philadelphia area were charged with felonies for post-
ing school shooting threats on Yik Yak, according to philly.com.
Yik Yak itself is trying to crack down on this type of bullying with posting

Schools are still having issues with the site and parents and even some

cyberbullying. Psychiatrist Keith Ablow stated in a May 9 interview for Fox

Meeting time and location: Big Board at 6:30 pm every Tuesday in the RHA room in Woolridge
About us:The Residence Hall Association
(RHA) wants to make your time in the Residence Halls an enjoyable and safe experience. They organize and host co-curricular activities and establish and enforce rules to help make group living easier on resi-dents, Resident Assistants (RAs) and the hall council.
The RHA meets weekly to plan
campus wide events, including Sex Squares, Carnival, and the upcoming Clash of the Classes. The students in this club are students living in the residence halls who were interested in leadership opportunities on cam-pus and sought them out.
Jarden Guilden, the RHA Execu-tive Equipment Manager said, “Don’t use the D word…DORM! Dorm gives off a negative connotation, so we en-courage students to say residence hall whenever possible.”
Danielle Miccio, a 4th year RHA member and the current RHA Execu-tive Historian said, “I joined RHA to make a difference on campus. I stayed in RHA because it’s the best group of student leaders I could work with.”
The RHA always gives out free prizes at campus wide events, includ-ing TVs, Keurig’s and gift cards. This week, the RHA also has a display in the library showcase on Ivy Lane.

These days I am perpetually disappointed in Lock Haven Univer-sity. This sorry excuse for an institu-tion has failed me yet again. On top of all of the budget cuts, the tuition increase, the lack of student involve-ment in major changes that directly affects us, not to mention our wallets, this school has gone above and be-yond to let down their students.
Here’s the latest.I was in class browsing Tumblr
and my professor was going on about whatever assignment she was going to burden us with next. I heard her mentioning a new pamphlet that the school had distributed among stu-dents and faculty. As she said it was about how to avoid rape.
At that very moment it took every ÀEHURIP\EHLQJQRWWRLQWHUUXSWKHUoutraged. How to avoid rape? You can’t be serious. Instead of going off
like my mind told me, I simply raised my hand and asked to take a look.
As I read that trash, I was thor-oughly disgusted. I shared the blas-phemous pamphlet with my good friend and classmate Kayla Marsh. Her face illustrated utter repug-nance.
She in-stantly burst out, “ D r . S t r i n g e r , they’re giving this to students?”
Dr. Stringer, taken aback replied, “Yes.”
And this is the issue. LHU decid-ed it was a great idea to pass out rape prevention pamphlets, effectively de-ciding it was a great idea to perpetu-ate rape culture.
Listen, I understand that the school’s president is a heterosexual
white male, therefore he was born with a cheat code in life and it’s much easier for him to avoid the dangers of rape. But this decision is prepos-terous. The nerve, the audacity, the
unmitigated gall of him to approve and allow
such deleterious correspondence to be delivered to young females!
If you
don’t under-stand my anger
and frustration I need for y’all to
pick up a book or just search #RapeCulture on
Twitter or Tumblr and educate your-selves. Rape culture is nothing short of victim blaming. It’s telling girls and women to be careful about what they wear, where they socialize, what they drink, their surroundings and to never let their guards down unless they, unless we want to get sexually
assaulted. Rape culture says that oth-erwise, women are asking for it. It’s YLFWLPVKDPLQJDWLWVÀQHVW
I have no clue why this still has to be said but get your pens and paper and take notes. If a woman does not verbally, clearly and explicitly say yes to sex then she is not consenting to sex. Period.
I can walk around New York City topless or around State College wear-ing next to no clothing or lay out on the dike with my legs spread and none of that translates into me ask-ing for it. I can do whatever I want, dress however I want and go wherev-er with whomever I please without it meaning I want strange men forcibly invading my privacy in the most bar-baric of ways.
Dear Lock Haven University, why are we teaching women rape prevention and not teaching men not to stick their members where they aren’t welcome? Start holding your male students accountable instead of perpetuating rape culture.
Recently, big news arrived on the campus known as Happy Valley leading students and fans alike to crowd the streets and celebrate. The NCAA DQQRXQFHGWKHHOLPLQDWLRQRIWKHRQWKHÀHOGVDQF-tions for the Penn State football program, given to them due to the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scan-dal. These sanctions included eliminating the post-season ban and reinstating scholarships.
For Penn State football fans, this is exciting news. But is this really as good as it sounds?
I will freely admit that I am not a Penn State fan, nor a football fan. Therefore, I cannot sit here and tell you that I know much of anything about football because that would be entirely inaccu-rate (I had to look up what the sanctions actually meant—this girl needs accurate info!)
On the other hand, something I know well is
that continuing to employ a child molester is a prob-lem. I also believe in holding people accountable for their actions, something the NCAA neglected to do. Penn State knowingly kept Jerry Sandusky on staff. They harbored a child molester and enabled him to destroy more lives. Even though Jerry San-dusky will likely die in prison, he’s not the only guilty party involved.
A comment I often hear when this topic arises is “the football players did nothing wrong, they are subjected to this mess and have to deal with other peoples mistakes.” Essentially these people are saying the football players are the victims. Once a comment similar to that is made, my blood begins to boil. No, they are not victims. The real victims are the ones NCAA is forgetting about—the inno-cent children who Sandusky abused.
For the football players, consider this: Did this scandal affect their future relationships? Did it af-fect their self-esteem or did it affect their ability to trust people? In my opinion, the real victims are
the ones who feel just that. Those children didn’t get a chance at a normal life. There’s no reset but-ton for them. They weren’t privileged, they weren’t asked and they surely didn’t get a chance to pre-vent their abuse. They are forever tarnished due to the many monsters at Penn State who allowed this to go on for far too long.
Often times our interests tend to cloud our judgments, which can result in poor decisions. I truly believe the NCAA is guilty of this by neglect-ing to consider how this decision will affect San-dusky’s victims. They have no remorse or support for the victims and their families who have to live with this for the rest of their lives, which is evident through their new ruling.

Giving Christian Hackenberg the ball in crunch-time, with the game on the line, is probably one of the best things that could happen to Penn State’s football team during the course of a game.
Hackenberg has illustrated nu-merous times over the past two sea-sons that he has no fear of the pres-sure in big-time moments, as he has led the Nittany Lions in a couple of game-tying and game-winning drives.
Saturday night was the latest edi-tion of “The Late Show with Christian Hackenberg,” as he and the comeback kids struck again en-route to spoiling Rutgers’ Big Ten debut.
With Penn State trailing 10-6 late in the fourth quarter, Hackenberg led the Nittany Lions on a six-play, 80-yard drive in 1:49, which was capped RII E\ D ÀYH\DUG WRXFKGRZQ UXQ E\Bill Belton. Yes, “the team from Penn-sylvania,” spoiled the Scarlet Knight’s party in Piscataway by winning 13-10.
“They’re gritty; they’re hard-nosed,” Penn State coach James Franklin said of his team to Zach Schonbrun of the New York Times.
“They never stopped believing in themselves. They never stopped be-
lieving in Penn State.”Hackenberg would go onto throw
309 yards, but threw no touchdowns and only one interception. Junior wide receiver, Geno Lewis had six receptions for 109 yards, and sopho-more, DaeSean Hamilton caught eight passes for 103 yards. Both Lewis and Hamilton have been Hackenberg’s go-to receivers so far this season.
7KHSDVVJDPHKDVEHHQMXVWÀQHfor Penn State this season, however, Penn State has been unable to get the ground game working at all this sea-son.
Bill Belton carried the ball 15 times for just 36 yards. Zack Zwinak, who has been a 1,000 yard rusher in his career at Penn State, had just two carries for seven yards. Hackenberg was Penn State’s second-leading rush-er in the game, with 12 carries for 18 yards.
One problem that may be caus-ing Penn State’s running game to be non-existent is their offensive line. It is a very inexperienced and young of-fensive line, and we saw that theory proved on Saturday.
With Bill O’Brien, he would con-sistently give the ball to Zwinak or Belton or whomever 20-28 times any given game – and he was successful with it. But, O’Brien had a better of-fensive line, and now the offensive
line is depleted because of the lack of scholarships from the sanctions of the Jerry Sandusky Scandal.
+DFNHQEHUJZDVVDFNHGÀYHWLPHVin all on Saturday night, and Penn State only had 64 yards rushing.
Penn State is 120th in the nation among FBS schools in rushing yards per-game, with 75.7 yards per-game.
The announced crowd of 53,774 was the largest in the 20-year his-tory of High Point Solutions Stadium. The game was in primetime at 8 p.m., the fans had rally towels, but none of the raucous atmosphere would rattle Penn State late in the game.
Penn State (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) failed to crack into the top-25 for week four. However, the Nittany Lions did receive 51 votes in the AP Poll, and 26 votes in the USA Today Poll.
Not only could this game have re-newed a rivalry between Penn State and Rutgers, but Penn State pulled out a hard-fought win in games now that mean something. Also, Penn State climbed out to an early-lead in the East Division of the Big Ten with the win over Rutgers.
The Nittany Lions will try to make it four wins and no losses on the sea-son as they host the University of Massachusetts at 4 p.m. Saturday at Beaver Stadium. The game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
