1 Dear Gateway to Hope Friends, Supporters and Patients, It is with great enthusiasm that I write my first note to all of you as executive director at Gateway to Hope. Here only a few short months so far, I am energized every day by the work happening at the organization. The legacy of Gateway to Hope is one I greatly admire and look forward to upholding: support for women who need us as they face the unimaginable challenges of breast cancer. Many of us have heard the stories, and still more have lived the stories themselves, about how a breast cancer diagnosis changes everything. There is so much to navigate, and the financial and emotional burdens that come with managing treatment can be overwhelming. Gateway to Hope is here to alleviate those burdens and help women focus on what matters most: their health, their families, their friends, their communities. Even with all of the necessary and important focus on research for a cure, there are still so many women today who need this support. With one in eight women facing a diagnosis in their lifetime, Gateway to Hope’s work will not come to an end anytime soon. In fact, the need for our support is increasing with the indisputable increasing cost of healthcare in the United States. As I’ve walked into the office every day and met many of you, I have noticed one very important thing that will be critical to our work together going forward: Gateway to Hope is more than just an organization. We are a community; a community that includes our patients, and their support networks. It includes our generous donors and volunteers, our board and staff, and includes the compassionate and expert healthcare providers also caring for our patients. This diverse and committed community is the bedrock of Gateway to Hope, and because of you, I am certain that our organization can impact many more lives in the future. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Susan Sullivan, GTH President

I’m excited to share the news that Katie Manga joined Gateway to Hope as Executive Director in January! She most recently served as Senior Vice President of Advancement and External Affairs at Wyman Center, where she was responsible for strategic initiatives to secure operating and growth capital to serve youth in need. Previously, she served in several local and national leadership roles at The Boeing Company, engaging teams in strategic community investment, outreach and government affairs. She has also held policy and constituent affairs roles within the Florida house of representatives in the U.S. Senate. In the short time since Katie’s arrival, Gateway to Hope has benefited from Katie’s expertise and leadership in many meaningful ways. We also welcome Monique Parasram as our new Operations Manager. She also brings expertise in organizational operations, accounting, insurance, payroll, and vendor management. I hope you will get to know Katie and Monique at one of our many events!

I invite you to join us July 28 for our Gateway to Hope polo event! If you haven’t experienced a polo match, the games are action-packed and competitive. You’ll be just steps away from galloping polo ponies and swinging mallets! Bring friends, wear your boots and join us for a fun afternoon, including the traditional divot-stomping at halftime. Many thanks to board member Diane Gantner for chairing!

Save October 19 for our biggest event of the year – KaleidoHope. We are breaking with tradition and launching a new, exciting and faster-paced format for KaleidoHope

PATIENT STORY

FINDING HOPE…LAUREN AND MELISSA'S STORY

For both Lauren and Melissa, it began with a self-exam. These young mothers and friends were then thrust into an unknown world when they each received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Both had to make numerous life-changing decisions in such a short period of time. Yet, they found comfort in each other, building an even stronger relationship than they had before. Both Lauren and Melissa made it through over a year of treatment with the support of family, friends, their faith, and Gateway to Hope.

In April 2016, after receiving her diagnosis, Lauren quickly realized what a full-time job her diagnosis and treatment would be. On top of home-schooling her two young children, her calendar quickly filled with countless appointments. “Your world is flipped upside down,” Lauren remembers. While she wanted to protect her children from the hard and demanding times during her treatments, they couldn’t escape the reality of what Lauren was going through. “They grew up faster than needed,” Lauren recalls, yet, watching them display “such resiliency and compassion was stunning.” She was also amazed at the support she received from friends and family.

Lauren was terrified when she received a call from Melissa asking about her breast surgeon. Melissa received her diagnosis in August 2016, just a few months after Lauren’s diagnosis. Melissa remembers her first chemotherapy

treatment was the same day as her daughter’s first day of first grade. It was important for her to create stability for her two kids even during such a difficult time for her family. Melissa was astounded to see everyone wanting to help, especially her sister, Riley, who took a semester off from college to provide full-time support for the family.

During her treatment, Melissa read an article in the local newspaper about Gateway to Hope. After her initial appointment, she thought the assistance was “too good to be true.” Melissa was quickly receiving financial assistance to help cover the cost of her health insurance premiums, mortgage and even gas cards for her treatment appointments. Knowing her family would not “face catastrophic financial ruin” was a huge “mental stress relief,” Melissa recalls. The assistance truly allowed her to focus on healing.Melissa also felt grateful that her story was being honored and that the process “didn’t require so much of me.”

Lauren then heard about Gateway to Hope through Melissa and another friend. “Gateway to Hope is run by such kind and caring women who are genuinely concerned with my overall well-being. They provided me not just with monetary aid, but were a wealth of resources for emotional care,” Lauren recalls. Like Melissa, Lauren also received assistance with her health insurance premiums, utilities, and gas cards. “Gateway to Hope was such a steady gift during a very dark and unpredictable time,” says Lauren. Because of the assistance she received, Lauren was able to maintain a level of normalcy for her children. “It was so important to us to be able to keep some fun and normal aspects of life to keep our spirits up, when life was in such an upheaval,” Lauren states.

Both Lauren and Melissa went through months of individualized treatment plans, including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. Melissa also went through the process of reconstruction, which she just completed in December 2017. Through it all, they had each other. As Lauren describes, they provided each other with a “deeper compassion and understanding” as “someone who gets it.” Even their husbands and children connected, providing everyone with the support needed to make it through such a challenging time. For Melissa and Lauren, who first met at a bible study group, their faith also grew, giving them the extra push to keep going. Now after they have both completed their treatment, priorities have shifted in their lives. They focus on the things that truly matter and make time for the important stuff.

Lauren and Melissa

Two distinct worlds — life before breast cancer, and life after.

For Susie Knopf, Alisse Camazine, and Elizabeth Mannen, three survivors who have embraced the latter, they can make one more distinction — treatment with health insurance they could afford, and treatment without.

As chairs of Gateway to Hope’s 2018 KaleidoHope Gala, these three women know firsthand what survival means, and what was needed to survive — and now, thrive. Not just loving and supportive friends, family members and co-workers, but health insurance. Two powerful, critical words that can hold power over life and death.

Through their own arduous journeys they have joined forces to ensure all women struggling with breast cancer not only have the financial support and health insurance that is critical during treatment, but the emotional support that lets them know that they are not alone.

“There’s no doubt I would have died if I didn’t have health insurance,” says Alisse, a mother of three sons, who experienced serious complications, including a massive heart attack, during her chemotherapy treatment 27 years ago. “And it made me realize how unfair it was that I lived and some other woman, wife or mother in the same position could die because they couldn’t afford insurance. So when I found out about Gateway to Hope, I knew I had to be part of their mission. ”

For Elizabeth, it was an invite from a friend to the annual KaleidoHope Gala that opened her world to the insurance and financial dilemmas faced by other women. Mannen, who received her first diagnosis at 26, and has navigated four subsequent ovarian and breast cancer diagnoses in the 27 years since, sees GTH as a lifeline to empowerment for patients and their families — a way to relieve the fear, stress and anxiety that can be crippling at times.

Alisse and Susie couldn’t agree more.

“It’s one of the toughest battles a woman has to face — you feel like you are living through hell,” Alisse says. “You begin to make promises to yourself that if you survive you’ll do this or you’ll do that but, mostly, that you will live life to the fullest and appreciate being alive every single day. And so here I am, thrilled to be part of the process that helps women struggling with cancer to afford to remain insured throughout their treatment. So they, too, can call themselves survivors.”

Susie’s experience with breast cancer gave her life new meaning and a more defined purpose.

“All women deserve the care they need,” she says, “and making sure that happens is my reason for being on this earth.”

So together, Susie, Elizabeth and Alisse are co-chairing this year’s annual Gala. Together, they seek to raise awareness in the community about Gateway to Hope’s services. They seek to raise the funds needed to serve every woman who needs the support that Gateway to Hope provides. And together, they send a message of

MAKING A DIFFERENCE, TOGETHERFEATURE STORY

hope to women everywhere who have received a breast cancer diagnosis: you are not alone, and Gateway to Hope is here to help.

PAST EVENTS

Gateway to Hope welcomed over 300 guests to the Chase Park Plaza on Saturday, October 7, 2017 to celebrate our successes and honor those who further our important mission. Led by co-chairs Susie Knopf and Phyllis Langsdorf, the event’s festivities featured a seated dinner, open bar, interactive entertainment, silent and live auctions and fund the need program. Jasmine Huda, co-anchor on Fox 2 News 11 served as the evening’s emcee and Rene Knott, co-anchor on KSDK Channel 5 conducted the live auction and fund the need. A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Visionary Award to Tom Gunn, Steven Krause and George Roman for their efforts in developing a strategic plan that will allow Gateway to Hope to move successfully into its second decade of assisting breast cancer patients. As KaleidoHope celebrated the assistance of nearly 1,200 patients to date, it was the spirited and heartfelt sentiments of former Gateway to Hope patient and ambassador, Holly Webb, that brought the audience to their feet. Gateway to Hope thanks all who contributed to KaleidoHope’s success in helping raise over $300,000 for breast cancer patients in need.
