New Letchworth Nature CenterTo Open in Park This Year

Construction on the Letchworth Nature Center is in full swing, with a projected opening in 2016. The project is meeting the pro-jected schedule in terms of construction and private fundraising.

To date, $2 million has been raised through private donations and grants towards a minimum $2.1 million goal. The project is also expected to meet construction timeline goals. Since the nature center project began, it has involved local builders, sup-pliers and designers to make the nature center a reality, drawing on the workforce and resources found in Rochester and Western New York.

“Good progress is being made and the building is really taking shape,” said Peter Humphrey, chair of the Letchworth Nature Center Planning Committee. “Seeing the frame and architectural features move from paper to a building we can see and enter is exciting and gratifying. We are impressed with the level of detail we are seeing and grateful to the many local and regional contractors who on site, making this building a reality.”

While the physical building is in progress, fundraising efforts are still a top priority for the committee leading the project.

“We still have naming opportunities for donors and we are selling engraved brick pavers that will be incorporated into the center,” Humphrey said. “We are grateful for the range of donations we have received in support of the Letchworth Nature Center. I am so proud of the fact we have raised $2 million for this project to leverage state funding.

“As we look to final completion of the building, we are making a push to raise an additional $100,000 to meet our goal.”

Sponsorships remain for many of the building and architectur-al components of the nature center, including an exhibit room, classroom, covered terrace and educational programming area, solar panels, exhibits and more.

Brick pavers can be purchased for $250 apiece and can be engraved with a name. To date, nearly 200 engraved brick pavers have been purchased and will be delivered to the park in mid-March for inclusion in the back patio layout of the nature center. The pavers will be engraved by Miller Brick, a Rochester supplier of brick and stone for use in indoor and outdoor construction. Pavers will continue to be sold after the nature center’s opening.

About Letchworth State Park

New Guide Highlights Letchworth Park Waterfalls

The grandeur of the three waterfalls located in the south-ern end of Letchworth State Park has drawn visitors for more than a century and now readers will have a guide to the natural beauty of the park’s features.

The guide contains directions on how to reach the best viewing area for more than 25 waterfalls. There are nine maps that show the locations of the waterfalls and the trails used to reach the viewing areas.

More than 50 black and white photographs of the water-falls are included in the guide. As well, three photographs of the Lower Falls, taken from the same area over the last 35 years, show how the appearance of the Lower Falls have changed dramatically as they have receded upstream.

The guide also contains information on Letchworth ad-ventures, area accommodations and seven other state parks that have well-known waterfalls.

Author Scott A. Ensminger, of North Tonawanda, has worked closely with Letchworth State Park naturalist Douglas K. Bassett to gather information on the waterfalls for the book.

Letchworth Portageville Entrance Closed Until 2018By Carly Vair

With construction underway on the Norfolk Southern High Bridge, the Portageville entrance of Letchworth State Park is now closed, and it is expected to remain closed until September 2018.

The park’s other entrances remain open, and the Glen Iris Inn, Upper and Middle Falls will all remain accessible during construction. Park Manager Roland Beck said he doesn’t antic-ipate any adverse effect on tourism.

“The Portageville gate is one of our lesser-used gates to begin with,” Beck said. “To accommodate this, we redid our Castile gate so that’s bigger; it’s now two lanes … so that should accom-modate any extra traffic we may get.

“There are just some trails that they won’t be able to access. It’ll have minimal effect.”

The current bridge was built in 1875 and, in 2011, was identi-fied by the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Coun-cil as one of its five-year projects to address barriers to economic growth. The new arch will cost $70 million to construct, and, given the frequency of trespassers on the old bridge, the railroad is taking precautions to prevent trespassers in the new designs. With that in mind, Beck stressed that visitors to the park need to follow detours and stay off trails that are closed.

“I just want to remind everybody, for their own safety, if they come out to the park and they want to view any of this construc-tion, please obey the closures,” Beck said. “They will still be able to view the Upper Falls and the bridge from the Upper Middle Falls area. We don’t want anybody getting hurt. It’s still going to be an active construction zone and it’s still an active railroad as well.”

Location: 35 miles south of Rochester, NY. Park Entrances are located at Mount Morris, Perry, Castile, Portageville, and the Parade Grounds from Rte. 436 (see area map). The Portageville and Parade Grounds entrances are closed in the winter months.

Vehicle Use Fee: $10.00 per car; $35.00 for non-profit, tax-ex-empt non-commercial buses and $75.00 for commercial buses. Fee is collected weekends early May to Memorial Day weekend and in the winter, daily from Memorial Day through October.

Carry In - Carry OutLetchworth State Park is a “Carry In - Carry Out” State Park. This

means that everything daily visitors bring into the park (carry in) must be taken home (carry out). This includes picnicking trash and garbage. The park has no garbage receptacles in the picnic grounds and other day use areas.

AttractionsHiking: Hiking opportunities abound on trails ranging from one-

half to twenty miles, with difficulty from easy to moderate. About half the trails are available for winter hiking or skiing.

Swimming: Swimming is available at a pool which is located in the north end of the park in the Highbanks Recreation Area. The pool is open during the summer season when lifeguards are on duty, late June until Labor Day.

Whitewater: The Genesee River is a Class II-III whitewater river. Registration is available for canoeists and kayakers. Participants must be experienced whitewater paddlers and able swimmers. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Whitewater rafting and guided canoe trips are a concession activity that advertises in this guide. Trips originate from the Lee’s Landing area and travel about six miles over two hours. Picnic Areas: Picnic tables, grills and shelters are located throughout the park. Fuel for grill fires is not provided. Some picnic shelters are available for reservations. Remember: carry in - carry out.

Winter Sports: Winter sports in Letchworth Park include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling in designated areas, and hiking.

History: The William Pryor Letchworth Museum in the Middle Falls Area features displays about early regional settlement and Native American Artifacts. On a ridge behind the Glen Iris Inn is a restored Seneca Indian Council House, the grave of Mary Jemison, and the cabin of Nancy Jemison, all of which were preserved by Mr. Letchworth.

The FallsWithin the park, the Genesee River cascades over three falls,

including the 107-foot drop of the Middle Falls. Lights illuminate the Middle Falls after dark from May through October.

Inn and LodgeAccommodations

The Glen Iris Inn and Restaurant, located within the park near the Middle Falls, offers fine dining, country inn guest rooms and a gift shop. Open through Oct. 30th. Room reservations suggested.

Park RegulationsFor the enjoyment and safety of all visitors, a number of regu-

lations apply. Park rules and regulations are posted at all comfort stations and are available at the Visitor Center. A few frequent-ly-asked-about regulations are listed here.

Pets: Household pets are permitted if confined on a leash not exceeding six feet in length. Proof of rabies inoculation is required. Pets are prohibited in all park buildings, cabins, cabin areas, and pool areas.

Alcoholic Beverages: Permits are required for most groups bringing alcoholic beverages into the park. Permits and specific regulations are available from the Visitor Center.

Fires: Fires are permitted only in fireplaces; visitors must bring their own fuel or purchase it at the concession stand.

River/Gorge: Entry into the Genesee River within the park is prohibited, except by permit in a canoe group. Swimming is allowed only in the swimming pool. Climbing the river gorge is prohibited.

William Pryor Letchworth MuseumThe William Pryor Letchworth Museum houses a collection

relating to the Indian and pioneer history of the Genesee Valley as well as archeological and natural history displays. It is located in the Middle Falls Area of the park near the Glen Iris Inn.

The museum itself was built in 1912 and was planned by William Pryor Letchworth to expand his original Genesee Valley Museum which was built in 1898.

The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm, seven days a week, from May 1 through October. The suggested donation is $1.00/adult and $.50/child, $3 per family. The museum phone is (585) 493-2760. The History Department phone is (585) 493-3616.

The park offers a number of other historic interest points including:

Council Grounds with the Seneca Council House, Nancy Jemison cabin and the Mary Jemison statue and gravesite. Located on a bluff behind the museum.

Glen Iris Inn, former home of William Pryor Letchworth and now a country inn and restaurant with a view of the Middle Falls.

Parade Grounds, a Civil War camp and training grounds for the First New York Dragoons. Located in the east area of the park.

Portage Bridge, an iron railroad bridge which replaced the highest wooden bridge in the world, which burned in 1875. (Public not allowed on the bridge since it is still an active railroad.)

St. Helena and Gibsonville, “Ghost Towns of the Genesee,” were thriving villages now vanished from the valley.

Like the brick pavers, many of the materials used in the con-struction of the Letchworth Nature Center are locally-sourced and come from suppliers in the Western New York area. Design features — like the rock face on the exterior of the building — are natural materials collected from within Letchworth State Park.

To date, construction for the nature center is on schedule. The foundation, under slab mechanical work, and structural steel were in place by summer 2015, with timber framing and insulation panels added in October 2015. The building’s final structural components and roofing were added in December 2015 before the first snowfall.
