Hello and welcome to our ‘Christmas in Letchworth Garden City’ guide 2011. Whilst this guide is by no

means exhaustive it will give you a feel for what’s on in Letchworth over the festive period. It focuses on the Town Centre Lights switch on event, to be held on Saturday the 26th November and the following three Saturdays taking you through till our annual Christmas Carol Concert on December 17th. There are over 30 events in the town centre during this period and hopefully something for everyone to enjoy. My personal thanks must go to Di Adkins, Kim Barratt and Jon Horwood for all their efforts making Christmas 2011 in Letchworth something to remember.

The packed programme of Christmas events and activities is bought to you by the Letchworth Garden City Town Centre Partnership. Responsible for organising many of the town centre events and activities, here is a snapshot of what we’ve organised and helped to deliver over the last year.

April saw Union Jack bunting strung around the town centre in celebration of Easter, St George’s Day and of course the Royal Wedding. A town celebration, Britannia Day, held on April 23rd saw local musicians provide free entertainment in the glorious warm spring sunshine while craft stalls provided activities for all ages. The Scouts contributed to the fun raising funds with their homemade cakes, while our Easter Egg hunt and Design a Stamp competition were also popular.

The return of the Letchworth Festival saw three major events take place in the town centre as well as a fantastic and varied programme of talks, visits and concerts.

Street Fest, a bumper programme of free live music, dance and street theatre, kicked off the Letchworth Festival in style back in June. Ambitiously spread across five stages, with food concessions, fun fair rides and buskers and stall holders populating

Eastcheap and Leys Avenue. Titan the Robot was a huge hit with the crowds as were the acrobatics of the Black Eagles. With something happening on almost every street corner Street Fest got the town centre buzzing with creativity.

The Letchworth Festival gave us Proms in the Park, set in Broadway Gardens, a showpiece for many of Letchworth’s young and dedicated classical and jazz musicians. The town centre was also handed over to the Festival’s Day of Dance. Styles from around the globe, including popular Latin and Egyptian dance were showcased by local dance groups in Leys Square with braver types taking the opportunity to learn a few steps during one of the interactive sessions.

Events that help raise funds for charities or awareness about their work are traditionally well supported in the town and this year we’ve seen leg waxing organised by the Scouts as well as the LIONS annual fun day in Broadway Gardens. All proceeds raised on the day were donated to the local branch of Marie Curie. Meanwhile, the charity Groundwork brought their fun competitive games to the town centre with their Spots v Stripes challenges.

2011 - an eventful year


We’ve had zookeepers from Paradise Wildlife Park bring a selection of their small exotic animals to Leys Square, to vintage car enthusiasts bringing their pride and joys to our Classic Car Show which included a Grand Prix winning Maserati 250f. More recently Letchworth Town Centre went spook-tacular for a creepy Halloween trail.

The regular Farmers’ Market and Craft Market are both popular with local residents and visitors, while the new community trading space at the Greenhouse is attracting stallholders selling everything from vintage clothing to delicious cup cakes, and goes from strength to strength. With the London Olympics to look forward to and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to celebrate we’re hoping 2012 will be a fantastic year for our town.

Christmas Lights switch-on has been lighting up Hertfordshire and beyond for more than 25 years. Founded in 1985, the company is one of the longest established in the industry. Every year they put on more than 200 professional displays while their network of shops supplies the busy Bonfire Night market with domestic fireworks.

One of the company’s specialities is fireworks on rooftops such as the one from which Letchworth’s Christmas lights will be triggered. With an audience in closer proximity than the usual Greenfield site, Fantastic Fireworks display designers have to take extra care to use material with little or no debris. This involves a detailed knowledge of each and every firework in

the company’s inventory. The audience won’t see any rockets in this display because of the hazard posed by their sticks. Colourful items like silver fountains, red and green roman candles and colourful mines are the order of the day as they try to create a winter wonderland of Christmas cheer.

Says managing director Jon Culverhouse ‘Our aim is to surprise and delight audiences across the country. ‘We are very grateful to the management team at Letchworth for allowing us to light up the town at this festive time of year.
