Date: 14th MarchGrade: 4Time: 9.20 – 10.00Topic: Appearance. Description.Suggested level: A1, Primary level.Objectives: - to present adjectives for description of appearance and personality; - to sum up adjectives learned at previous lessons; - to practice using adjectives in sentences; - to practice using has got in positive and negative sentences; - to practice reading skills

By the end of the lesson students will be able to: - describe person’s appearance and personality; - use vocabulary related to the topic ; - use has got and hasn’t got in sentences.

Equipment: course book “Messages 1”, CD player.

1. Opening 1 min 1.1 Greeting. Good morning, dear students! I’m glad to see you! Today we’ll read about a very interesting

person, speak about his appearance and personality. And, as usual, we have fun and enjoy our work.

5 min 1.2 Warming up Let’s play a ball game “Opposites”. I’ll throw you my toy-octopus and say a word. You should think and name the opposite quickly and throw the octopus back to me. Let’s start! ( big – small, happy – sad, noisy – quiet, funny – serious, new – old (young), good – bad, difficult – easy, great – awful, exiting – boring, long – short, tall- short) Well done! And now tell me, please, what is your favourite possession (TV programme, place, film, computer game, pet)? (…) What is it like? (…) Who is your favourite actor (sportsman) ?

2. Main part15 min 2.1 Presentation

T.: Open your Student’s books at page 38, please. Look at the pictures. What can you say about these men? What is Dr Jekyll like? What is Mr Hyde like? (students answer. If there are some difficulties, they can speak their native language at this stage of the lesson). Look at exercise 1, I’ll read you about them, listen and follow in your books. (read slowly and clearly the text, explain new words: scientist, poison, drink, change into, become).So, who drinks the poison? Who is Mr Hyde? What is Dr Jekyll? (Make sure students realize that Jekyll and Hyde are in fact the same person) Under the pictures you can see some sentences with numbers. Ann, read the sentence number one, please.S1: He’s got long, dark hair.T.: Can you mime the meaning of the sentence? (Ss read and mime all the sentences. Help students to show and understand unfamiliar words without translation)S2.: He’s a nice person.S3.: He’s got straight hair.S4.: He’s tall.S5.: He’s got a cruel face and his teeth are black.S6.: He’s a kind, honest man.S7.: He hasn’t got glasses.S8.: He’s got brown eyes.S9.: He hasn’t got a friendly face.S10.:He’s a dangerous person. Everyone is scared of him.S11.: He’s got curly hair.S12.: He’s got short, fair hair.T.: Now, think which sentences are about Dr Jekyll, and which ones are about Mr Hyde. Write the numbers as you can see in the example. You’ve got 2 minutes. (Ss work individually). Please, stop writing, listen to the recording and check your answers. (CD 1, track 30). I suppose everything is right in your answers. So, what is Dr Jekyll like? Read the sentences about him. ( 2, 4, 6, 11, 12). And what about Mr Hyde? Read about him. (1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10).

2.2 Exercises to practice the material2 min T.: Close your books for a while. I’ll describe you one of these men and you should say either “Dr

Jekyll” or “Mr Hyde”.(say the sentences from this exercise and elicit the answer). 4 min T.: Open your books again at page 38, please. Look at exercise 2. There are words to describe

appearance and personality. Listen to CD and repeat them. (CD 1, track 31). Now, list the adjectives under four headings. Be attentive! Some of them can be used in more than one list. You’ve got three minutes.(Write the headings on the board, Ss work individually. While checking chorally, write the adjectives.) * Hair: long, dark, black, nice, short, straight, brown, curly, fair.

Eyes: dark, black, nice, brown. Height: tall, short. Personality: cruel, nice, dangerous, friendly, honest, kind.

3 min T.: And now with closed books say about Dr Jekyll’s personality. You can see the list of words at the board. Start your sentence like this: Dr Jekyll is… (write it on the board). (Ss answer). OK, now say some sentences about Mr Hyde’s appearance. Start like this: Mr Hyde has got…(write it on the board). (Ss answer).

3 min T.: Are you tired? Let’s play a game. I’ll describe someone in our class. Can you guess who she or he is. Listen. She’s a nice and kind person. She’s got long, dark hair and her eyes are grey. (Ss guess. And if someone wants to describe his / her classmate, he / she should have this opportunity.)

3. Closing1 min 3.1 Home assignment

Your home task is to read the text in exercise 1 at page 38 in your Student’s book and to read similar descriptions in your Workbooks and guess the of boys’ names on the photos. That is exercise 1 at page 22.

2 min 3.2 Evaluation. You were great today. You worked well and got some marks.(call a student, say his/her mark and explain it). The lesson is over. See you on Thursday. Good bye!
