Hardware Software

Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer that can be seen and touched.

Including: • Keyboard• Mouse• Network cable• Webcam• Monitor• Printers• Router• Speakers• Motherboard• DVD drive

Software is a set of instructions or programs that tells the computer what to do.

Two types: • System software• Application software

System Software

Application Software

programs that control and analyze the computer’s hardware, for example, an operating system or backup software

Programs that are designed to help users complete a specific activity or task. For example, if you wanted to search the Internet, you would open an application called a web browser.

Three Basic Computer Functions

Input Processing Output

Input is when a computer takes in data or

information through an input device.

Processing is when a computer uses input data or information to obtain a

meaningful result. This takes place in its central processing unit or CPU.

Output is when a computer sends out data or information through an

output device.

Examples:Keyboard

ScreenMouse

ScannerDigital camera

Gamepad

Examples:PrinterScreen

Speakers
