Universal language for engineers - graphical means of expression of technical details without the barrier of a language.

• Diagrams/sketches/pictures – communication skills • We grasp information easily if it is illustrated with

diagrams, sketches, pictures, etc.

• It would just be impossible to communicate all necessary details about the LCA verbally or in writing – Illustration (picture/drawing) is useful.

• A picture/drawing is worth a thousand words..

• The LCA would be impossible to create without computer graphics and drawing models. Drawings are the road maps which show how to manufacture products and structures.

• Graphical representation of an object – Drawing

• Engineering drawing – A drawing of an object that contains all information - like actual shape, accurate size, manufacturing methods, etc., required for its construction.

• No construction/manufacturing of any (man -made) engineering objects is possible without engineering drawing.

• Approximately 300 Indian and foreign companies and labs participated in the design and fabrication of GSLV.

• Without proper universal technical language (drawing), it would not have been possible to share the information of hundreds of industries and labs and thus to go for the fabrication and launch of

GSLV.

• Nature does not go by any drawings for the design of beautiful natural things –Atheist

• Nature works under the control of God. God does everything as per His plan. Therefore, natural constructions do go through the process of drawings - Theist

What will you learn in this course?

You will learn - How industry communicates technical information.

• Visualization – the ability to mentally control visual information.• Graphics theory – geometry and projection techniques.• Standards – set of rules that govern how parts are made and technical

drawings are represented.• Conventions – commonly accepted practices and methods used for

technical drawings.• Tools – devices used to create technical drawings and models.• Applications – the various uses for technical drawings.

In learning the techniques of engineering drawing, you will find that something very important has happened - it has changed the very way that you think about technical images and, more facts and figures will stay with you throughout your career – keep your motivation high!

Drawing is important for all branches of engineering.

• If you are not serious in this course, you will find difficulty in properly understanding and communicating the technical information in other subjects throughout your BTechprogram and engineering career as well.

No way out. Do not ignore the course, take it very seriously!

Engineering drawing is completely different from artistic drawing, which are used to express aesthetic, philosophical, and abstract ideas.

Engineering Drawing

Manual Drawing Computer GraphicsCADD

Computer aided design and drafting (CADD) -Computer has a major impact on the methods used to design and create technical drawings.

Design and drafting on computer are cheap and less time consuming.

Why we go for manual drawing?

Dr P.S. RobiIIT Guwahati

Page 15: Lecture 1

Computer cannot replace the drafting board and equipment as a learning tool.

Once you have learned the basics of mathematics, now after class 12, you are allowed the use of calculator and computer.

If basic fundamentals are clear, better use can be made of the power of the software.

To be an expert in technical drawing, this first course on Engineering (manual) Drawing is the first step.

Two ApproachesTwo Approaches1.1. Linear engineering Linear engineering

(design process)(design process)• Traditional design process is a

sequential process that can be grouped into six major activities, beginning with the identification of the problem and ending with documentation and design. Engineering drawing/graphics are used throughout this process to document design solution.

2.2. Concurrent engineering Concurrent engineering (design process)(design process)

2.2. Concurrent engineeringConcurrent engineering• An alternate approach to the linear design process – the

new way of designing, with its integrated approach – gets everyone (technical and non-technical including the customer) involved in the design process.

With the drawing sheet placed underneath the scales of the mini-drafter, fix the drawing sheet to the drawing board with the scales of the mini-drafter aligned either with the vertical or the horizontal borderlines of the drawing sheet. Dr P S Robi
