My inspiration into Renaissance Art

Through my visit the this museum I was able to learn more about Renaissance art. Things I want to

share with you.

Renaissance Art

• Renaissance is French for “rebirth” which was what people thought Renaissance art was the rebirth of antiquity in art, literature, and philosophy.

• This form of art emerged in the late 1300’s and early 1400’s till the 1700’s.

• The printing press was invented during this time.• Science and art became more important in this

period.• Music made great strides.• Perspective and natural light became more

important in art.

Renaissance Art Cont.• Leonardo Da Vinci tried to draw

the perfect man with exact proportions.

• They learned new ways to show third perspective.

• Vasari broke Renaissance art into three major parts, saying that the 14th century was a period of, the 15th century a period of adolescence, and the 16th century as a period of maturity.

Michelangelo• Born in Caprese in 1475.• Studied anatomy before

becoming an artist.• Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and

engineer.• Became famous before the

age of 30 by: David and Pieta.

• His art didn’t focus on perfection on the human body like others of this time

Sistine Chapel

• Pope Sixtus IV paid for this tremendous project which is why it bears his name.

• Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli and the Perugian Pietro Perugin wete all asked to paint the walls of the chapel in fresco which is a plaster type of painting.

• The ceiling wasnt originally painted by Michelangelo, Piero Matteo d'Amelia painted a “star spangled sky”.

• In 1508 Pope Julius 11 asked Michelangelo to repaint it.

• Michelangelo actually hated fresco paintings he thought of himself as a sculpture and disliked he upcoming job of painting the ceiling.

Sistine Chapel Cont.

• The ceiling has more than 300 different paintings to cover the ceiling.

• He worked on the ceiling from 1508 an 1512.

• This project ended up permanently hurting Michelangelo's eyes.

• Originally “The Last Judgment” wasn’t included in the ceiling he was called back when he was in his 60’s to make this creation.

• The ceiling has been restored many time each one taking several years as to not damage the work.

Pieta

• This piece has been done many times by painters and sculptures, however Michelangelo's Pieta stands out to be one of the very best.

• It took him two years to carve out Pieta from a slab of marble.

• The virgin Mary who in most scenes like this actually very young and beautiful, instead of distraught and older looking.

• There is so much detail in this work it will take hours to catalog the veins and muscle detail Michelangelo did in this piece.

Pieta Cont.• One important detail in this

piece is Michelangelo's signature. When people view this work they said it was don’t by someone else and when Michelangelo heard this he was so mad he carved his name into the sash worn by Mary.

• After this he never signed another one of his work for the guilt of defacing such a beautiful work.

• Was born in 1452 and died 1519• During his time he wasn’t as famous

for his paintings but for his contribution to science.

• Thought to be the best scientist of his time.

• Known for not finishing many of he projects whether it be paintings or his living encyclopedia .

• He was known as “ The Renaissance Man”

Mona Lisa

• Created in 1503-1519.• The paintings primary purpose was to celebrate

the birth of Lisa del Giocondo ‘s second child.• The landscape in the background is thought to

have been inspired but Chinese artists.• Chinese artists were known for the pyramid shape

in paintings. • The Mona Lisa was stolen in August 1911,

Peruggia stole it because he believe that the art needed to go back to Italy where it came from.

• Mona Lisa has had acid and rocks thrown at her over the years but she withstood it with the help of recreatores who studiouslty repainted affected areas.

• In 2003-2006 we celebrated the 500th year anniversary of the Mona Lisa.

• Recent studies with high-powered cameras show that the Mona Lisa actually did have a hair line drawn for and eyebrow.

The Last Supper

• The actual painting is 15x29 feet, which means its huge!!

• It took him 3 years to complete this work which is notable since you know how much of a procrastinator he was.

• The reason this “Last Supper” has grown to become so famous is because of the use on one point perspective. The focus being Christ's head.Discussions

• The people featured in the Last Supper are Bartholomew, James Minor, Andrew, Judas, Peter, John, Christ, Thomas, James Major , Philip, Matthew, Thaddeus and Simon.

• The thing that makes this piece so different is that Da Vinci chose to use dry plaster instead of the more common wet plaster, which is why it is peeling more worse than other works of this time.
